11th Annual Holiday Open House Scheduled in Mayville Region

Native Pollinators In Your Garden CCE Chautauqua announces fall L.E.A.F. Workshop

MAYVILLE – The Mayville-Chautauqua Community Chamber of Commerce and local area businesses are busy planning the 2021 Holiday Open House in time for the holiday shopping season.

This wonderful event brings local businesses together from Mayville, Chautauqua, and Dewi ville in an event that highlights supporting small, local businesses.

The Holiday Open House will take place for two weekends with many local businesses participating.

The event is scheduled for 10am-5pm each day, Friday, November 12 – Saturday, November 13, and Friday, November 19 – Saturday, November 20.

Each participating business will display a sign indicating that they are part of the Holiday Open House.

Signs will be displayed before the Open House weekend, so please take note when you see them. Inside each business the owners or employees will be eager to pass out traveling punch cards which will be valid for both weekends. Each participating business will be listed on the punch card. Shoppers can get their cards punched during the Holiday Open House weekends. Completed punch cards can be turned in at the shoppers’ last stop and will serve as a prize entry.

Fredonia symphony returns to King Concert Hall stage Saturday

FREDONIA – The College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Associate Professor David Rudge, will return to the King Concert Hall stage at the State University of New York at Fredonia with its fi rst concert of 2021-2022, featuring two Concerto Competition winners, on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m.

mance from Carriere, Miss., will play several movements of Stephen Dankner’s Concerto for EB Alto Saxophone.

Yejin Lee, a junior Music Performance major from Seoul, South Korea, will play the fi rst movement of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor.

Other works to be performed include Vaughan Williams’ Five Variants of “Dives and Lazarus” based

balance for native pollinators in your home gardens.

Learn what plants will create a positive environment, how to provide nesting sites and maintain your garden to encourage pollinators to visit.

This course is scheduled for, Thursday, October 28, 6 pm – 8 pm.

Ms. Martonis is a Chautauqua Master Gardener who has participated in a variety of projects including Seed to Supper, Educational gardens, and trainings.

The LEAF (Learn. Empower. Achieve. Farm.) Series is open to beginning farmers, established farms looking to diversify and grow, agriculture enthusiasts, homesteaders, and everyone in between!

In New York State there are over 400 bee species. These bees are essential for the pollination of fruits, vegetables and flowers. Join Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteer, Patricia Martonis to learn how to create a habitat for native pollinators to enhance growing food and flowers.

This presentation will focus on the importance of native pollinators in vegetable and flower gardens. Participants will learn how to a ract, retain, and support the natural

A POINT OF VIEW

Memories Of October Autumn

BY ROBERT L. HEICHBERGER A dairy and vegetable farm in this rural region was the se ing. A colorful autumn season was the time frame back during the Depression years of the 1930's.

The scene was a white farm house and dairy barn surrounded by cultivated farm acreage, tucked away in the picturesque rolling Boston hills of western New York. A glimpse over the hills of the western horizon would o en display the glistening sunset streaming across the clear Lake Erie waters. That was my childhood homestead.

Other farm families were our neighbors and when in need, they were always there! And I cherished the four seasons on the farm: winter, spring, summer, and fall. Each season played a unique role in life on the farm. But the fall season, October autumn ...seemed to be my favorite.

In a sense, autumn is a second spring when every colored leaf is a flower, trees take on a new look, and the animals in the meadow spring into winter preparation. And "fall" plowing gets a heads up on "spring" plowing. The fall season begins with a subtle change: the skies are a richer blue and the night time hours become starlit and chilled.

The season comes with frost, the disappearance of the migrant birds, and harvesting of the last season's crop which marks the end of another growing season. It was time for the soil to go into a winter respite. The barns were fi lled with fodder for the ca le, and the grain bins were fi lled for the winter season. The potato cellars were

fi lled, providing there was a productive harvest, and the potatoes were waiting to be sorted and packed for winter market.

October autumn carried with it many signs: the goldenrod has turned brown, the squirrels busily storing food for winter and birds emptying the bird feeders in record time anticipating what is to come. The winter storm windows were put in place and Saturday mornings was usually fi lled with stacking cords of fi re wood in the woodshed as fuel for the kitchen stove. Most of the farm tools were put away in the tool shed waiting to take on their task the following spring.

And like clock work, the winter mail order catalogs arrived and winter clothes and boots were displayed in the catalog pages. Only absolute essentials were put on the order list. I remember well trying to fit into last years winter boots into this year's foot size. So, last years' winter wear of my older brother seemed to fit me just fi ne; thus, for me, they were hand me down sort of "new" clothes.

Particularly exciting was when the mail order Christmas/holiday catalog arrived in the October mail. What an array... five whole pages of new toys and, if we were lucky, a new push truck or windup train might fi nd its way on the special order form. And maybe the order would arrive just in time as Santa made his rounds.

These are October memories. Many things have changed over the years: agricultural practices, farm tools, living styles, and the normal events of each

day. And then, on the other hand, there are those October memories which are far more than just a passing thought. These memories live on and are part of the permanent fabric of life: the brilliant sunset on the lake, the beauty of the naturalness of nature, the evolving changing of seasons, and neighbors helping neighbors. And most tender in our heart is the continuing thought of family and loved ones with whom to share my October autumn memories.

For you see, these memories live on, not for just a season but for a life time.

Wendel Helps Raise Awareness of FCC's Emergency Broadband Benefit Program

Emergency Broadband Benefit Program Provides Discounts Toward Broadband Services for Eligible Households MAYVILLE –Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel recently announced his office is working to help build consumer awareness about the Emergency Broadband Benefit, a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program. The temporary benefit will help to lower the cost of broadband service for eligible households during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

On Oct. 20, 2021, Wendel hosted a meeting with the mayors and supervisors of our local municipalities to discuss the Emergency Broadband Benefit, and how work in a collaborative fashion will help bring affordable broadband services to the residents of Chautauqua County.

The $3.2 billion Emergency Broadband Benefit program provides a discount of up to a $50 per month to-

ward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for qualifying households on qualifying Tribal lands. The benefit also provides up to a $100 per household discount toward a one-time purchase of a computer, laptop, or tablet if the household contributes more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase through a participating broadband provider.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has further exemplified the importance that broadband internet access plays in our daily lives,” said Wendel. “Whether it is used by a student to enter a virtual classroom, an employee to complete work, or someone staying in touch with their friends or loved ones, the internet plays a crucial role in our education and economy.

That is why I have made expanding broadband services a priority during my admin-

istration. It is important that residents are aware of this Emergency Broadband Benefit which will bring affordable broadband to Chautauqua County and assist them in paying for broadband services.”

A household is eligible for the Emergency Broadband Benefit program if one member of the household meets at least one of the criteria below: Has an income that is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines or participates in certain assistance programs, such as SNAP, Medicaid or the FCC’s Lifeline program; Approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision, in the 20192020, 2020-2021, or 20212022 school year; Received a Federal Pell Grant during

the current award year; Experienced a substantial loss of income through job loss or furlough since February 29, 2020 and the household had a total income in 2020 at or below $99,000 for single fi lers and $198,000 for joint fi lers; or Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating provider’s existing low-income or COVID-19 program.

Emergency Broadband Benefit enrollment opened on May 12, 2021. Eligible households can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) using an online or mail-in application.

Cybersecurity and Hacking; What You Need to Know to Defend Yourself

SALLEY, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY CLERK Hacking and Cybersecurity has been in the media a lot recently; TV programs, news reports, political interviews, it even came up during my debate. I have a Master’s Degree in Information Technology and I have been a Y2K programmer for Plantrol Systems in Westfield, telephone technical support for Time-Warner Cable (now Spectrum) in Buffalo, and a database report writer for Seneca Nation of Indians Medical Center in Irving.

When most people hear the word ‘hacking’, they picture a scene from a movie, with an unscrupulous programmer writing complex code in binary (ones and zeros) to bypass security systems, entering a commercial or government database and destroying it. If your database has been destroyed, it was done by a disgruntled former employee, and you aren’t changing your passwords o en enough. A real hacker doesn’t want to destroy your

database, he doesn’t even want you to know he’s been there. He wants to steal it, he wants to copy it, he wants to sell it. In a DMV database, he’s going to go for all the insurance information. John Smith is paying insurance on three vehicles to ABC Insurance company. The hacker can sell that information to XYZ Insurance, complete with John’s social security number, home address, email, and phone number, and XYZ Insurance can send him targeted advertising. If you’re not running regular diagnostics on a database you manage, you’re vulnerable.

So, how do real hackers get passwords and credit card information? Through processes called “social engineering”, “phishing” and “spoofi ng”. Social engineering is hackers pretending to be someone else on the phone, or via email, and in a few documented cases in person, in order to get information out of you. Perhaps they’ll pretend to be a technician from your ISP (internet service provider) questioning you about your (non-exis-

tent) faulty connection that’s blocking your neighbors, and of course, they’ll need your username and password to investigate this problem.

Phishing is a specific form of social engineering when hackers create a fake email copying an authentic company’s logos and mo os to make it look like the email is coming from that company.

This fake email usually tells you there’s a problem with your account and contains a strong motivation such as “We’re closing your account” or “Please verify this $3000 purchase” to get you answer it with critical information such as account numbers, credit card numbers or passwords that the hacker can use to directly order from the real account. If you hold your mouse over the ‘reply to’ link, your browser will show you where the link actually leads to. Never give out critical information in response to an email or phone call. Go to the company website and either log in directly there or get their phone number and call them.

Spoofi ng is when hackers grab public photos off your

social media pages, set up a fake account in your name and send friend invitations to people on your friends list This allows them to harvest information about either you or your friends. If you receive such an invitation, check to see if you’re already friends with that person and inform them. You can also report the fake account directly.

Those Facebook quizzes that ask a dozen questions including “What’s your favorite color?”, “What year did you graduate?” “What’s your pet’s name?”, those are all data-mining questions which allow hackers to collect fi les of information on you and hundreds of others like you.

You may know be er than to tell anyone your mother’s maiden name, but if you have a second cousin who’s taken up genealogy during the pandemic lockdown, he may very well have put that information on his family tree webpage. Once hackers have this information, it allows them to guess at passwords based on your social life.

spouse, your kids, the family pet, your old high school, etc.

Banks and technical support companies don’t even use those for security questions anymore because the information is so widely available on the internet.

What you need is a password that’s easy to remember but hard to crack. Try this trick. Pick a quotation from a poem or book that you like.

“In Xanadu did Kublai Khan a stately pleasure dome decree. . .” Now, take the fi rst initial of each word, IXdKKaspdd.

If there are no proper names, capitalize every other le er.

Next, replace all the vowels with numbers, using what the computer geeks call “leetspeak”. ‘A’ becomes ‘4’, ‘E’ becomes ‘3’, ‘I’ becomes ‘1’, and ‘O’ becomes ‘0’, . Our password is now “1XdKK4spdd”, something nearly impossible for a hacker to guess, but easily recreated when needed.

For pin numbers, use a similar process to create a pin that’s easy to remember and hard to crack. Don’t use significant numbers like the last four digits of your childhood phone number, or your wedding day (MM/DD) or a

family member’s birthday.

Those numbers are easily researched. Pick a sentence of four or more words. Use the fi rst four words of the sentence. “My dog has fleas” (a mnemonic musicians use to tune a ukulele). Now, count the number of le ers in each word; 2, 3, 3, 5. That’s your new pin, 2335.

In every cyber security course that I’ve ever been in, the instructors have stressed repeatedly that the weakest link in any system is seldom the code but the people in it.

Be alert, be aware, double check everything. Never give out personal or security information to a source you haven’t contacted yourself.

If you stay vigilant and avoid the hacking a empts I’ve outlined above, you’ll drastically decrease your chances of being hacked.
