One project receiving a grant is the GIS for CHQ Community Project, led

by Mr. Adam Gollwitzer at Chautauqua Lake Central School. Chautauqua Lake students, working in conjunction with SUNY Fredonia, will collect data and construct Geographic Information System Maps (GIS) of sites for the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy, The Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau, and the Chautauqua Institution.

The grant money will be used to purchase software needed to construct the maps from the students’ data. The finished maps will be publicly available in perpetuity.

THE VITAL ROLE OF A CANCER SUPPORT NETWORK The moment a person is diagnosed with cancer can elicit a variety of emotions. Fear of what’s to come is a common reaction to such a diagnosis, and some people may feel alone upon learning they have cancer. But no cancer patient should face their diagnosis and treatment alone. In fact, a strong support network can be vital to patients’ recoveries.

According to Weill Cornell Medicine, recent changes in the healthcare industry have shifted the burden of care from the hospital to the home. That underscores the importance of a strong support network. Many of the challenges cancer patients face in the months after diagnosis will be new, and patients can expect a range of emotions.

According to Breast Cancer Now, a charitable organization that funds one-third of breast cancer research in the United Kingdom, women may experience emotions such as shock, anger, disbelief, anxiety, and sadness after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Having loved ones there to help them make sense of those emotions and stay positive as they navigate their way through the treatment process is essential.

In addition to providing emotional support, loved ones of breast cancer patients may need to take on additional roles as they help their friends or family members face the challenges that lay ahead.

Because of the industry changes noted by Weill Cornell Medicine, cancer caregivers and support networks may need to prepare themselves to take on the following roles, each of which is vital to cancer patients’ survival.

- Monitor the disease: Support networks may need to keep track of how their loved ones’ disease is progressing and if there are any complications from treatment.

- Manage symptoms: Breastcancer.org notes that

treatment causes severe side effects in many women. Such side effects may include nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, pain, arm swelling, shortness of breath, and skin irritation. Thankfully, most of these side effects can be treated.

In addition, Breastcancer.org notes that most side effects ease up after treatment is completed. In the meantime, support networks may need to help patients manage those symptoms, performing a host of tasks to make their loved ones’ lives easier. For example, patients experiencing shortness of breath may be incapable of performing chores around the house. In such instances, members of a support network can tackle those chores until their loved one bounces back.

- Administer medication: Breast cancer patients may be too overwhelmed to handle their own medications, so support networks can take over this important responsibility for them.

- Assist with personal care: Some patients may experience fatigue after treatment. In such instances, support networks can help patients maintain their personal hygiene.

Support networks can be vital to helping cancer patients overcome their disease and navigate their way through successful treatment regimens.

Hunter named ACE Fellow at SUNY Fredonia FREDONIA – Dr. Jevon Hunter, who serves as chair of Social and Psychological Foundations of Education and Adult Education at SUNY Buffalo State, is an ACE Fellow at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

He is one of 52 emerging higher education leaders across the country named a Fellow for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The ACE Fellows program of the American Council on Education is a customized learning experience that enables educators to immerse themselves in the study and practice of leadership and also experience the culture, policies and decision-making processes of another educational institution. These participants are trained to move into administrative roles.

Dr. Hunter is looking forward to a different campus environment than the one he’s used to at SUNY Buffalo State. He’s interested in learning about the ways in which SUNY Fredonia builds relationships within the community as a community partner.

“I am curious about the bonds students have to the campus, the campus’ efforts in its recruitment, retention and graduation of students, especially Black, indigenous and people of color,” Hunter

commented.

Hunter, the WoodsBeal Endowed Chair for Urban Education in the School of Education, indicated his expectations are quite simple: to learn the unique ways in which President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. and his cabinet provide leadership at the university. “One interesting aspect of this is the fact that SUNY Fredonia is clearly situated in a community distinct from that of SUNY Buffalo State,” Hunter said.

Among Hunter’s goals at Fredonia is working alongside President Kolison and his cabinet to determine an issue or concern impacting the campus and leverage his expertise, background and experiences to address the issue or concern as a project.

President Katherine Conway-Turner was also ACE Fellow, and shared her experiences with him and also wrote a letter of recommendation to ACE. “I was all too excited to know that I would have a unique, yet memorable experience,” Hunter said.

While being an ACE Fellow creates tremendous opportunities, such as meeting with campus leaders, networking with peers and leaders in higher education and learning about the operations of universities in the 21st century, Hunter said he’s more interested in how he might serve Fredonia and its broader community.

Fredonia launches new B.A. degree in International Studies

Cope Foundation Held 1st Annual "WALK to REMEMBER” Saturday September 25, 2021, the Cope Foundation held its 1st annual “WALK to REMEMBER”. This year it was in memory of Justin Matteson and Elise Hupcej.

Justin is the son of William Matteson and Shelly Matteson. Elise Hupcej is the daughter of Eileen Ecker and James Louis Eisman III. The walk brought attention to the overwhelming cases of opioid overdoses.

How children survive after losing a parent to this disease or how they tolerate living in a drug household.

Our mission is to bring awareness to the overwhelming facts of drug abuse and overdoses. To focus on chil-

dren who survive the tragedy of losing a parent to this disease. And to aid in the children's progress while living in an opioid household.

Informing the children that this does not have to be their path. There is hope.

We can accomplish this mission through joint efforts by bringing hope to the children through our "circle of Lite" campaign.

Mental health stability can help the Children be more productive and conscious in everyday living. Making wise choices is a direction necessary for success. As this is the final step of the C.O.P.E. Circle

of light, it certainly is not the end. We will continue to maintain a relationship with all the children and continue to be a resource for their future.

What will be the new dialing procedure?

To complete all local calls, you will now need to dial area code + telephone number. This applies to all calls within your area code that are currently dialed with seven digits.

Who will be affected?

Anyone with a telephone number from your area code will need to make this change from 7-digit local dialing to 10-digit local dialing.

When will the change begin?

Beginning October 27, 2021, you must dial 10-digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls.

On and after this date, local calls dialed with only 7-digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.

Beginning July 16, 2022, dialing “988” will route your call to National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.

Prepare your deck for winter Homeowners often take steps to winterize the interior of their homes in the weeks before winter's arrival, but such efforts should extend to the outside of a home as well.

Decks make for great gathering places when the weather permits. Decks are where many people spend their free time and eat their meals come spring and summer, when the temperatures climb and the sun sets well into the evening. But as summer turns to fall, homeowners must take measures to protect their decks from potentially harsh winter weather.

- Inspect the deck for problems. Decks tend to be used more often in summer than any other time of year. That makes fall and early winter an ideal time to inspect for wear and tear and any additional issues that may have cropped up throughout the summer. Damaged boards

and loose handrails should be fixed before winter arrives, especially for homeowners who plan to use their decks in winter. Fixing such issues in winter and even into spring may be difficult thanks to harsh conditions, so make good use of the relatively calm autumn weather to fix any issues on the deck.

- Clear the deck of potted plants. Even homeowners who intend to use their decks in winter should remove potted plants from the deck in the fall. The home improvement experts at HGTV note that moisture can get trapped between deck boards and plastic, wood or ceramic containers in cold weather, and that can contribute to mildew, discoloration or decay.

- Store unnecessary furniture. Homeowners who like to sit on their decks in winter will no doubt want to leave some furniture out over the winter. But those

with lots of furniture for entertaining guests can likely move the majority of that furniture into a garage or shed for the winter. HGTV notes that doing so will prevent the potential formation of blemishes on the deck that can result from inconsistent weathering.

- Remove snow, but do so carefully. Prolonged contact with snow and ice can damage a deck. As a result, homeowners should clear snow from their decks when accumulation is significant.

HGTV recommends using a snow blower on the deck to avoid scarring. If a shovel must be used, push snow with the planks to reduce the risk of damaging the deck.

Homeowners who take steps to protect their decks throughout the winter months can ensure these popular areas are ready once entertaining season returns in the spring.

When you are digging out last year’s sweaters, if you find any wool or wool-blend ones that are a bit worn or no longer fit, Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) invites you to donate them to Audubon for upcycling.

Upcycling is a form of recycling where an item that would otherwise be thrown away is given a new use in life. Rather than recycle using a recycling bin, creativity is used to update and renew old items.

ACNC Volunteer Ann Thorpe will repurpose your sweaters into beautiful sweater-mittens to sell in Audubon’s Blue Heron Gift Shop, as was done last year.

Any excess sweaters not used for mittens will be

donated to charity during Audubon's winter clothing drive.

Gently loved wool and wool-blend sweaters can be dropped off at the Nature Center's reception desk during regular open hours: Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and Sundays, 1 - 4:30 p.m.

The hand-knitted mittens will be available for purchase in the Blue Heron Gift Shop from November through the holidays.

Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, one-quarter mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown, N.Y., and Warren, Pa. Anyone can enjoy the grounds, with its six miles of trails, and view Liberty, Audubon’s non-releasable Bald Eagle, dawn to dusk daily, free of charge.

Easy ways to clean up leaves Autumn is marked by colorful foliage and plummeting temperatures. Once those leaves reach peak color, they fall from the branches and collect on lawns, necessitating cleanup projects. For homeowners with big yards, such a project can be tiring and time-consuming. However, there are ways to make leaf cleanup easier.

One of the easiest ways to clean up leaves is to reach for a lawn mower rather than a rake. The mower will cut leaves down to smaller sizes, creating an effective mulch that can add nutrients back into the lawn. Davey, a lawn and landscape solutions service, says that mowed leaves also can be collected in a

mower bag and added to garden beds or compost piles.

For those who prefer manual raking, select a rake with tines that will not skewer the leaves in the process. Big rakes also can make faster work of gathering leaves into piles.

The home improvement resource The Family Handyman advocates for the use of a lawn sweeper. This is a manual device that has a rotating sweeping brush that gathers up lawn debris and leaves into an attached hopper bag. Like mowed leaves, the bag can be emptied into a compost pile or distributed where needed.
