Dahlgren opens Fredonia’s Brown Bag series with virtual talk on freedom of expression FREDONIA– “Freedom of Expression on College Campuses,” the inaugural topic in the 2021-2022 Brown Bag Lecture Series at the State University of New York at Fredonia, will be given by Professor Robert L. Dahlgren of the College of Education on Wednesday, Oct. 6, beginning at noon.

The Brown Bag event will be presented on Zoom, those planning to participate

Abbey Van Wey Awarded Casimir and Caroline Skrzyniarz Memorial Scholarship Abbey Van Wey of Dunkirk is the 2021 recipient of the Casimir and Caroline Skrzyniarz Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2015 by Casimir and Caroline's children, Emily and Robert Skrzyniarz.

Emily fondly remembers their parents as highly motivated, hardworking, kind-hearted individuals, and students considered for the scholarship possess these same qualities. Additionally, students must be of Polish descent, creative, ethical, and continuing their education at a college, university, or technical school.

Chautauqua Mall to Host Donation Drive in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

volunteerism demonstrate her kind heart. She was a member of her high school varsity swim team and was active in musical theater and dance throughout her high school career. In her essay, part of the application process for the scholarship, Abbey described recurrent injuries that kept her from participating in these activities at times and the resilience and motivation that helped her overcome them. Currently pursuing her interests in art and photography, Abbey has plans to attend Jamestown Community College next year for general studies. She aspires to become an English teacher.

J A M E S T O W N – Chautauqua Mall will host a Donation Drive beginning October 1st through October 31st from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday – Saturday and 11:00 am – 6:00 pm Sunday.

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Chautauqua Mall is collecting items for Transitions Supportive Housing Program in Jamestown. Local shoppers are asked to drop off items which are in high need such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste and facial tissues as well as clothing for women and children. A suggested donation need list can be

found at chautauquamall. com.

Shoppers may make their donations between the hours of 10:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday – Saturday and 11:00 am – 6:00 pm on Sunday through October 31st.

Donations can be dropped off at Chautauqua Mall in the designated bin just inside the main entrance between Old Navy and Planet Fitness.

An Essential Aspect Of Quality Leadership

BY ROBERT L. HEICHBERGER The recent national news headliners these past months have drawn much attention from “WE THE PEOPLE “. And the dynamics of the current national political scene is much in the mind and in the heart of the American public.

Truly, the character of national LEADERSHIP and the quality thereof is much in focus for the American public and for all the world to see.

Much of the world has seen the events leading up to the tragedy of a countless number of Americans and their allies left behind as hostages in Afghanistan . And then too, there were the extremely sad picture of thousands of human beings of all ages left strained under the bride at our southern border. Also, there is the awareness of proposed unprecedented federal government spending at a time when spiraling inflation is making an appearance. All of the above, at a time when there are those who see some of our federal decision making leaders as self-centered narcissists. Indeed, of absolute prime significance on the national scene today is the tenor of national leadership.

If you want to be effective in what you do, there is no substitute for personal commitment. And further, to be perceived as an effective leader you must be committed and trust worthy. A suggestion to a wise leader: ‘”Lead yourself with your head ,and lead others with your heart.”

In most of life’s situations, the leadership function is operative wherever there are people assembled. There are leaders and there are followers in almost any social setting. Leadership, in a group, may emerge from the young to the very oldest, men and women, experienced and inexperienced. Through the ages, leadership, in some form, has been apparent in almost all groups and cultures. We see it operative seven days a week, in business organizations, social clubs, and all levels of society. We observe it in professional and municipal organizations, national and international settings, and social circles. There are times when we may agree with the leadership style and at other times we may find it highly distressing. There is a presence of leadership in most formal and informal organizations, in communities and block groups, rural settlements and urban centers. It can be seen in teen age groups and even among younger children. It is observed in a host of government agencies, neighborhoods, and families. Most of us are aware of its presence or of its absence; we may have feelings about it and we may be most appreciative for it or not always happy with it. Most of us can see the effect of its impact in our daily lives but we may be hard-pressed to put into words just what it is that is operating.

From my perspective, leadership is an art. The effects of it can be seen and felt, described and discussed. Men and women may be appointed, elected or assigned to a leadership position, which may carry with it a title; but that is positional leadership and does not assure anyone that

true leadership will be displayed. The only advantage a title can bring to an individual is that it can buy a little time and with time, it will either increase one’s level of influence with others or erase it. The truth of the matter is leadership itself must be earned. True leadership is based on trust and trust flows from character. With the absence of trust, expert leadership is ineffectual and almost nonexistent.

For at the heart of leadership is the leader’s relationship with followers. People will entrust their hopes and dreams to another person only when they think the other is a reliable, truthful and committed individual. As the Law of Buy-in states, people buy into the leader who is truthful and dependable. People are tentative in their feelings until trust is built between them. People will tolerate honest mistakes.

But if one violates their trust with another, that individual will find it very difficult, if ever, to regain the confidence of others. That is the prime reason one needs to treat trust as one’s most important precious asset. A positional leader may have great oratorical skills and pretty words but until one sees those words in action, the words may ring seductive but empty. In those spoken words, truth and substantive positive action serves as the “glue.” In short, character builds trust and trust must be present and truth must prevail as an essential aspect of quality leadership.

Jamestown Pride to hold J-Pride Coffeehouse event at the Robert H. Jackson Center JAMESTOWN– The Jamestown Pride Committee will hold its annual J-Pride Autumn event 7:00-9:00 p.m., October 15th at the Robert H. Jackson Center.

The event will feature speakers, entertainment, coffee and snacks from the Labyrinth Press Company, and an open mic with prompts to tell your story!

There will also be door prizes with extra entries for sharing your story or donating to next year’s Pride Festival.

Held in collaboration with the Fenton Historical

Society and the Robert H. Jackson Center, this year’s event will be a J-Pride coffee house and highlight stories of coming out and being in the LGBTQIA+ community in Chautauqua County. Anyone who wishes to speak can sign up and receive a prompt to speak at the open mic.

There will be door prizes and baskets from businesses who support Pride. Door prize entries are $5 with proceeds benefiting Jamestown Pride Fest 2022. Anyone who shares their story, or fills out a survey about the 2021
