Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Host Successful Golf Tournament

The Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club hosted its first annual golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday July 14th at the Vineyards Golf Course, 4696 Berry Road, Fredonia, NY. The event was deemed a success and the second annual tournament date is set for Saturday, August 6, 2022.

The event raised just over $3400 which will be used by the Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club to support the local community through such programs as: eyeglass and hearing aid programs, durable medical equipment loan closet, scholarships for high school seniors, winter coat drive, support of local food pantries, and much more.

FREWSBURG, N.Y.: -- The Chautauqua County Workers’ Memorial Committee will be holding its 20th Annual Workers’ Memorial Day on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Chautauqua County Workers’ Memorial Site at Erlandson Overview Park on Oak Hill Road in Frewsburg, N.Y. Workers’ Memorial Day is a day of remembering all of the men and women from Chautauqua County who have lost their lives on the job, in the line of duty, or died from job related causes. This year’s ceremony will recognize over 160 individuals who have passed away on the job since the 1880s.

The event is free and open to the public. This year’s event will feature a variety of speakers including keynote speaker Peter DeJesus, President of the Western New York Area Labor Federation.

The ceremony will also include a special dedication of a bell in memory of Mary Lou Dunning, a former member of CSEA Local# 807/6300 and Buffalo-Niagara Frontier Retirees Local 903. There will also be a plaque dedication to honor deceased members of the Chautauqua County Worker’s Memorial Committee: Hobart (Hobie) Rhienhart, Mike Piazza, Helen Sischo, and Joe Sweeny.

The Chautauqua County Workers’ Memorial Site is made possible through the cooperation of Chautauqua County Government, Chautauqua County Parks Commission, local labor organizations, and by donations from supporters.

“I encourage residents to join us on September 25 as we remember our fellow workers and loved ones who have lost

their lives while carrying out their duties,” said PJ Wendel, Chautauqua County Executive and Co-Chairman of the Chautauqua County Workers’ Memorial Committee. “It is by honoring them and their memory that we are constantly reminded about the importance of creating and promoting safe work environments for employees.”

DHHS ANNOUNCES THE SEPTEMBER 10th TOWN OF POLAND RABIES IMMUNIZATION CLINIC HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO SEPTEMBER 18th MAYVILLE - The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Division of Public Health has announced that the rabies immunization clinic scheduled for Friday, September 10, 2021 at the Town of Poland Highway Department in Kennedy N.Y. must been rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances.

The new clinic date is set for Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Town of Poland Highway Department, 533 Grubb Hill Rd. in Kennedy, N.Y. Dr. Mary Fales will be the attending veterinarian.

This is a drive-in clinic and each animal must be pre-registered to receive a vaccination. Vaccinations will be provided free of charge to all dogs, cats and domesticated ferrets three months of age and older.

Rabies is a very serious disease of warm-blooded animals caused by a virus.

Raccoons, bats, skunks, and foxes are common disease carriers. The virus is transmitted to humans and animals through saliva and it can enter the body from a bite, scratch, scrape or open cut. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system and can cause brain swelling and ultimately death within days of the onset of symptoms.

NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today led a coalition of 20 state attorneys general in urging Congress to respond to the climate crisis and advance environmental justice by funding critical programs in budget reconciliation legislation. In a letter to the chairs of numerous House and Senate committees, the coalition calls on Congress to pass infrastructure legislation and to allocate funding in the upcoming reconciliation bill that addresses the rapid transition to a clean energy economy, climate change, and the environmental injustices faced by low-income communities, communities of color, and Tribal and indigenous communities. The coalition urges Congress to fund actions that will substantially cut greenhouse gases — thereby preventing more dire climate change harms — and confront longstanding environmental injustice.

“People throughout the state and the country have long faced critical threats to their health and safety from climate change, but low-income families, indigenous people, and communities of color have endured the greatest suffering,” said Attorney General James. “New York has taken great strides in combatting the threats of environmental injustice that have plagued our communities, but the federal government must now take immediate action to support Americans in every corner of the nation. Today, I urge our Congress to deliver the necessary funding to respond to the rapidly growing climate crisis, and ensure the health and safety of our most vulnerable communities.”

All Americans deserve an equal right to clean air, clean

water, and a safe and healthy environment.

However, low-income communities, communities of color, and Tribal and indigenous communities are too often denied these rights, enduring disproportionate burdens of pollution, climate change, or other serious health and environmental harms.

Those harms are only becoming more severe, as witnessed by the catastrophic storms and wildfires experienced this summer. The coalition argues that Congress should address the climate emergency by prioritizing investments in the following specific areas that — while broadly beneficial to improving the lives of all Americans — are critical steps in ending the legacy of inequity that afflicts marginalized and underserved communities: Ensure substantial additional funding to reduce climate change pollution at its source and foster climate resilience; Improve critical quality water and drinking water services, including providing adequate funding to ensure that all lead service lines are replaced; Invest in air quality monitoring in at-risk communities; Address methane pollution; Increase access to and investment in clean energy, including enacting the proposed Clean Energy Payment Program; Fund energy efficiency programs for schools and affordable housing and reduce the need for higher-polluting “peaker” power plants; Accelerate the electrification of transportation and goods movement, including increased funding for zero-emission schools and metro buses; and Support programs that advance workforce development and pollution reduc-

tion and improve the health of our communities.

Additionally, the coalition contends that in order for the Biden Administration to deliver on its Justice40 promise, Congress must ensure that 40 percent of improvements funded by the budget reconciliation bill benefit disadvantaged communities.

The climate crisis is having devastating impacts on New Yorkers. For example, the remnants of Hurricane Ida recently brought ferocious winds, dangerous tornados, and record-intensity rain and flash floods. The storm caused an estimated $50 million in damages in the state and a death toll of 45 in the New York area. In New York City, 1.3 million people are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change by virtue of living in or adjacent to flood plains, with more than half identifying as non-White and living in low-income areas.

This letter is the latest action that Attorney General James is taking to end the scourge of environmental injustice in communities of color. Attorney General James is continuing to pursue legal actions across the state of childhood lead poisoning by holding accountable landlords that allow lead paint-related hazards to proliferate in their low-income rental properties.

Joining Attorney General James in sending today’s letter are the attorneys general of California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

SUNY FREDONIA It was fifty-seven years ago and still counting...

Well over one-half century of SUNY Fredonia's history to glean; When "yours truly" first entered the halls of this College At Old Main, which was then so much a part of the University scene.

Fredonia State has always been most highly regarded As a major part of the University System of this State.

It stood for the best in all of its settings Excellence in quality is its distinguishing trait..

Today, SUNY Fredonia maintains its luster even more so Meeting the needs of students as its goal.

For the best in quality in teaching, research, and community service Which stands so proudly, as the culture of its soul.

Fifty-seven years ago, when I first came to these hallways Its wide variety of programs were rated "the very best."

There was teacher education, the arts, and liberal studies And new programs being developed with imaginative zest!

As Old Main then stood proudly on its legacy And the campus saw amazing transformations...

In my memory, SUNY Fredonia remains so very special...

Group Of Five 1966 SUNY JCC Nursing Graduates Reunite Again On Campus Everything is different now.

When this group of five women started at SUNY Jamestown Community College in 1965, the campus consisted of two buildings: Hamilton Collegiate Center and a school building across Falconer Street.

Having graduated in 1966, they were part of JCC’s second nursing class. As they toured campus together recently, they marveled at the changes.

During a reprieve from the intense afternoon heat, Sue Johnson leaned back in a padded chair inside one of the college’s sprawling residential suites. She smiled and said, “I thought they were the good old days.”

Fifty-five years later, little on the JCC campus remains the same. That was no more obvious to the five than when the tour reached the college’s immaculate nursing classrooms and labs.

When they were students, the five practiced on each other. They gave injections to oranges. They labored to crank up the two beds in their archaic nursing labs like old stubborn car windows.

“The labs were nothing like this. This is phenomenal,” said Bonnie Allenson Biondolillo after she looked over JCC’s high tech equipment, computers, and mannequins. “It was rudimentary at best when you compare it to today.”

After graduation, they were thrown into the work of caring for people who entrusted them with their lives. For better or worse, they learned on the job without a safety net.

Each of the five made their careers in nursing. Their profession and their college are the ties that have bound

them for life.

Yes, everything is different now, but one thing hasn’t changed over all these years.

It’s these five — Johnson, Biondolillo, Elaine Swanson Crossley, Patricia Boberg Forbes, and Pennie Penhollow Harvey — and their connection.

“We’ve been friends since ’65,” Johnson said. “We kept in touch afterwards. Some of us stayed local. I went to Indiana. But whenever I have time and I can come home — this is home — I call Elaine and say I’m coming in, can you set up a reunion? And she does one. And it works.”

They last got together on campus in 2016 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their JCC graduation.

During their most recent reunion in late August, they were given a full tour of campus, where they navigated a handful of buildings that didn’t exist when they were students.

They laughed as they posed for a picture behind the steel bars of an imitation jail cell used by criminal justice students. Not missing a beat, they razzed Harvey, who worked for years at Collins Correctional Facility, caring for prisoners during her daily 3-11 p.m. shift.

All five started at local hospitals and worked their way up to management and administrative positions.

Johnson and Biondolillo branched out from nursing, but they maintain their licensing. Johnson earned a doctorate degree and has authored three books on nursing, while Biondolillo earned a master’s degree and opened a private practice counseling office.

Forbes spent 30 years as an emergency room nurse at Westfield Memorial Hospital. Crossley served at

Warren General and The Resource Center. Harvey worked in the maternity ward at Tri County Hospital before moving to the correctional facility.

“It’s amazing that we all stayed in nursing,” Johnson said. “I never wanted to do anything else. Even now.”

It all started at JCC, where they wiped away sleepy eyes for 6 a.m. labs and endured tense encounters while caring for psychiatric patients inside the locked wards of Warren (Pa.) State Hospital.

“It’s definitely not like it is now,” Harvey said.

The JCC five from 1966 prevailed nonetheless. Some may need walkers or wheelchairs to get around now.

But they are here, and they are together.

As their time on campus was coming to an end, Johnson wished the next class of JCC nursing students well, while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.

When you think about how the five have stayed close, it’s no surprise that her message featured a theme of unity.

“It’s time for nurses to gain power,” she said. “I would like to see a nurse sit on every hospital board in the country as a voting member. I would like them on community boards as voting members. A staff nurse can do that, as well as a manager. I think we need to gain power, and nursing needs to unify. We’ve never been unified.

“This group is unified,” Johnson added, looking around at her old classmates.

“Most groups of nurses, you put them together, they all go different directions.

That’s unfortunate, because it’s time. You guys go cease the power. I’m too old to go cease it. It’s your duty.”

MHA/St. Luke’s Art of Recovery Exhibit is Well Received Jamestown, N.Y. – Twenty-two pieces of art were on display at the recent Art of Recovery Exhibit presented by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County (MHA).

The event was held in St. Luke’s beautiful undercroft in downtown Jamestown on Saturday evening, August 28, to raise awareness for International Overdose Awareness Day, August 31.

The local artists who shared how they celebrate their own creativity and recovery included Carriee Clark, Nicole Crawford, Roseann Crocker, Lindsey Erickson, Melita Lyon, Joanne Porterfield, and Joseph Scoma.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y.: In preparation for the development of its 2022 Work Plan, the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG) invites businesses, municipalities, non-profit economic development organizations, and community groups to submit Letters of Interest (LOI) for funding consideration and/or technical assistance for 2022 projects that seek to support economic revitalization and long-term strategic investment throughout Chautauqua County. Projects that directly align with the Partnership’s Economic Development Strategic Plan will be looked at favorably through the review process.

Purpose CCPEG supports projects that are in alignment with a recently completed county-wide Economic Development Strategic Plan.

The Strategy identifies five work groups that are designed to capitalize on the economic opportunities in Chautauqua County: 1) Business Development; 2) Workforce Readiness & Development; 3) Community Development; 4) Housing Development; and 5) Tourism/Destination Development. CCPEG offers a collaborative infrastructure and resources to advance catalytic economic development projects that align with the Strategic Plan and the work group priorities, and can provide staff and consultant

support, as well as financial support for select projects each year.

tion; and · Level of collaboration among local stakeholder organizations, including public agencies and community-based organizations.

After the LOI review, the CCPEG will have the opportunity to offer varying degrees of support for select projects identified to have transformational county-wide impacts. Support could include project development technical assistance, grant-writing support, and/or financial assistance. In 2022, a minimum of $250,000 will be made available on a competitive basis for projects leveraging state, federal, philanthropic, and local sources.

Opera House Announces Concert Cancellation FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center announced today the cancellation of An Evening with George Winston, scheduled for Nov. 19.

According to Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis, “the Opera House received the following notice from George Winston’s management team late Tuesday afternoon: ‘Due to the recent surge in COVID-19 and the Delta variant’s rapidly rising cases, and out of safety and health concerns for our audience, venue staff, our artist and touring staff, we regret to announce the cancellation of George Winston’s concert tour for the remainder of 2021.
