Glow Themed 5K in Lakewood to Benefits Local Suicide Prevention Efforts LAKEWOOD, NY— Staying active and prioritizing our mental health is vital to improving our overall wellness.

To get our bodies and minds moving, The Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County is proud to announce its annual Glow Your Mind 5K Run/Walk that will take place virtually on August 21, 2021. All of the proceeds raised by the event stay local for suicide prevention efforts in Chautauqua County. The glow run is a collaboration of the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County, Chautauqua Tapestry and Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene.

The partnership came out of the groups’ common goal to generate awareness that mental wellness and physical wellness are of equal importance in everyone’s lives.

“We know how important physical movement can be in our journey of mental well-

ness,” said Carri Raynor, Coordinator for the Alliance.

“We may not be gathering this year, but we wanted to motivate our community to get moving with this fun annual event.” Additional sponsors include Combat Addiction CHQ, Media One and Fresh Press Studios.

Superintendents were previously notified by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) that NYSED would not be providing guidance or making recommendations regarding reopening plans.

Throughout the pandemic, the District’s focus has been to have children back in school safely, in-person, every day; and that remains the goal. During the month of August, the Board of Education will continue

planning for the opening of school on September 7, 2021.

Superintendent Mansfield will be providing a report and update to the Board of Education at the next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2021. The Board of Education plans to hold workshops as necessary during the month of August to ensure that district families and district staff are fully prepared and informed regarding plans for the opening of school. 84th Annual Westfield Antique Show is August 14 and 15 WESTFIELD, NY — The Annual Westfield Antique Show, sponsored by the Chautauqua County Historical Society, is returning to the village this summer!

After being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the annual antique show returns on August 14 and 15 with a wide variety of items available for sale. This year’s Antique Show will be held Saturday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eason Hall (23 Elm St., Westfield, NY).

The event will feature antique furniture, dining sets, glassware, silver, jewelry and much more. Over 20 different dealers will be in attendance.

The Westfield Antique Show has its origin dating back to 1938, when Doc and Edis Shelkey organized the first ever event in Westfield. The two were well-known local

antique dealers during that era and the event was so well attended they decided to hold it each year.

Since then the show has become an annual tradition in Westfield and for the past several decades has been organized by the Chautauqua County Historical Society. Chautauqua County Officials provide update On Covid-19

The appearance by Special Consensus bluegrass band on Friday, October 22, 7:30 p.m., at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center will be one of the first live in-person performances presented by this UAA member since the COVID-19 pandemic.

United Arts Appeal 2021 Fund Drive Closes August 31 JAMESTOWN, NY— “Residents and businesses throughout Chautauqua County benefit from the positive impact the arts have on children’s academic success, the region’s economic well-being, and our quality of life,” said United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County (UAA) President Julie Newell.

Newell is encouraging local businesses and individuals to support the UAA’s 2021 fund drive before it closes at the end of the month.

“Our members are eagerly planning to fully resume the in-person classes, rehearsals, and performances that are so important but that couldn’t happen during the worst of the COVID pandemic,” Newell said. “We’re counting on the community to help us make all this possible.”

Contributions to the United Arts Appeal support these member organizations: Chautauqua Regional Youth Ballet, Community Music Project, 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center, Infinity Visual and Performing Arts, Lucille Ball Little Theatre of Jamestown, and Western New York Chamber Orchestra.

Member offerings range from classes and performance opportunities for all ages in music, art, dance, and theater, to presentations of concerts, plays, dance, and films, from classical to contemporary. The UAA also awards grants for arts projects to individual artists and non-profit organizations through its Projects Pool Grants Program.

OSHA Seeks Volunteers for Small Business Panel on Emergency Response On August 2, 2021, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) notified the Office of Advocacy that it plans to reinitiate and convene a small business panel on a possible OSHA Emergency Response standard on October 4, 2021. OSHA’s potential Emergency Response standard could apply to employers that designate employees to provide emergency response services that are currently covered by OSHA’s Fire Brigades standard (29 FR §1910.156) or are not specifically covered by another OSHA standard.

This could include: Emergency Service Organizations (ESO), such as firefighting, fire rescue, emergency medical service, technical rescue, vehicle/machinery rescue, water rescue/recovery, and search and rescue, but not law enforcement employers solely engaged in law enforcement/crime prevention activities.

General industry employers that have or will establish a Workplace Emergency Response Team, also known as an industrial, emergency or facility fire

brigade, industrial fire department, emergency response team, fire team, or plant emergency organization.

(This standard would not apply to employers that provide only those emergency services which are already covered in certain respects by other OSHA standards.)

General industry, construction, and maritime industry employers that expect, based on past experience, to enter into a mutual aid agreement (interagency agreement) or contract to provide skilled support personnel at an

emergency incident.

County Officials Recommend Public Wear Masks and Get Vaccinated MAYVILLE, NY — On August 11, Chautauqua County Officials provided an update on the novel Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) in Chautauqua County.

As of August 10, 2021, Chautauqua County’s statistics are: • 93 active cases of COVID-19, which includes 14 new cases with: • 8 cases in 14701 (Jamestown) • 1 case in 14048 (Dunkirk) • 1 case in 14062 (Forestville) • 1 case in 14733 (Falconer) • 1 case in 14738 (Frewsburg) • 1 case in 14775 (Ripley) • 1 case in 14781 (Sherman) • 214 cases under quarantine; and • 5 positive patients hospitalized in Chautauqua County.

To date, there have been 9,211 recovered cases, 159 deaths, and 9,463 total confirmed cases since the pandemic began.

The County is also experiencing an uptick in cases this month. Since August 1, 2021, there have been 119 cases of COVID-19 in Chautauqua County. Of those cases, 84 cases (71%) were unvaccinated individuals, 25 cases (21%) were fully vaccinated individuals, 2 cases (2%) were partially vaccinated individuals, and 8 cases (7%) had an unknown vaccination status.

“Although the uptick in cases does not indicate a particular hot spot or cluster of cases in the county, we are seeing some breakthrough cases here,” said Christine Schuyler, Chautauqua County Public Health Director.

A breakthrough case is when someone who has been vaccinated against COVID-19 still gets the virus due to strain variants as the virus evolves or mutates.

“The Delta variant has not been confirmed in Chautauqua County through genetic sequencing because local labs do not have that capability. However, the recent spike in cases, the rise in the number of breakthrough infections, and consultation with state experts leads us to believe that the Delta variant is spreading in our community,” said Schuyler.

County health officials stressed that although no vaccine is 100 percent effective at preventing illness in vaccinated people, vaccines are effective in preventing severe disease, hospitalizations and death.

City of Jamestown awarded a Preserve New York Grant JAMESTOWN,NY— The City of Jamestown is one of this year’s Preserve New York (PNY) grantees. Their grant of $10,000 will fund a Cultural Resource Survey of its westside neighborhoods to help determine the area’s National Register eligibility.

The Preservation League of NYS and their program partners at the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) are thrilled to help fund this important work.

Jamestown’s evolution from a frontier village to a thriving industrial urban center in the 19th and 20th centuries is evident in its compact design inclusive of its residential neighborhoods.

Postindustrial disinvestment produced undesirable outcomes including homes falling victim to vacancy, abandonment, and deterioration. Jamestown’s westside neighborhoods have experienced these challenges exacerbated by collective underappreciation of the City’s history and historic assets. The City has responded with ongoing efforts to improve neighborhoods’ resiliency and protect real estate values. Thanks to a $10,000 Preserve New York grant, Clinton Brown Company Architecture, PC will conduct a Cultural Resource Survey of approximately 500 structures in Jamestown’s westside neighborhoods to determine National Register eligibility. This survey will bring historic preservation to an unrepresented part of the city, an area that merits the identification and protection of its heritage while providing access to the New York State Historic Homeownership Rehabilitation Tax Credit to benefit homeowners and regenerate Jamestown from within.

Historic Preservation has increasingly become a priority in the City of Jamestown and has been playing a meaningful role in the development of the city’s future story,” said Crystal Surdyk, Director of Development for the City of Jamestown. “With the funding provided through this grant, we will be able to continue to gain a better understanding of our cultural resources and historic assets. This understanding will equip

City leadership with the tools and information required to act urgently in protecting our most vulnerable assets, and fostering a community culture that values, respects, and embraces Jamestown’s heritage story.”

At its 2021 meeting, an independent grant panel selected 32 applicants in 25 counties to receive support totaling $297,995. Each grant supports important arts and cultural initiatives, as well as economic development related to our state’s arts and cultural heritage. Many of these grants will lead to historic district designation or expansion, telling the stories of communities throughout the state and allowing property owners to take advantage of the New York State and Federal Historic Tax Credits. This is even more valuable now, with the NYS Commercial Historic Tax Credit recently expanded for small projects, granting property owners a 30% credit. With the announcement of the 2021 awards, support provided by Preserve New York since its launch in 1993 totals more than $3.3 million to 489 projects statewide.

The Preserve New York program is a regrant partnership between the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and the Preservation League, made possible with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation has generously provided additional funds to support nonprofit projects in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Since 1993, Preserve New York has been providing funds to municipalities and nonprofit organizations that need technical, professional assistance to guide a variety of preservation projects. The historic structure reports, building condition reports, cultural landscape reports, and cultural resource surveys funded through this program lead to positive outcomes across New York’s 62 counties.

Ninth Annual Raynor Memorial Golf Tournament for Suicide Awareness LAKEWOOD, NY— On Saturday, September 11, 2021 the Ninth Annual Raynor Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Maplehurst Country Club in Lakewood, N.Y. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Suicide Prevention Alliance of Chautauqua County, The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and local families who have been affected by suicide. The tournament honors the memory of Danny Raynor, who lost his life to suicide in 2007. The tournament brings friends, family, and others in the community together to not only remember Danny, but to remember other loved ones lost to suicide.

The tournament will be a four-person scramble at a cost of $75 per person or $300 for a team of four golfers.

This includes 18 holes of golf, cart, t-shirt, lunch, dinner, fun and other giveaways.

Over $118,000 has been raised since the tournament’s first year in 2012. All of the funds raised have been donated towards the fight against suicide in the Western New York Region. The tournament is organized by Carri Raynor who was Danny’s wife.

“The first years of the event were all about Danny, and then it organically became a place to meet other loss survivors and honor their loved ones, while also supporting those who also struggle with mental illness,” said Raynor. “Through the nine years I have organized this event, meeting loss survivors has fueled my passion for increasing awareness

CLCS Alumnus Heading to 2022 USA Games Chautauqua Lake Central School alumn Justin Latimer from the Class of 2019 recently learned he will be going to the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games! He will represent New York in the bocce competition that will take place in Orlando, Florida.

Justin has been active in the Special Olympics New York for several years, participating in local and international torch runs.

In addition to bocce, he plays floor hockey, golf and bowling. He also is part of a hiking club, has been involved with the Harrison Phillips' Playmakers initiative and is an honorary member of the Jamestown Police Department.

That does not mean we shouldn’t have a voice. In fact, it makes it all the more important that our voices be heard.

While we are fortunate to have some fine amenities and attractions that put us on par with many larger cities, the fact is that Chautauqua remains a largely rural county.

We still have an active agricultural economy as well as small businesses and numerous manufacturing interests. We have far more in common with our neighboring counties, and communities stretching up to the finger lakes and out to Elmira within the current district than we do with the City of Buffalo.

Let’s keep our voices strong and active in an effort to save our Congressional District.

Congressional district lines in New York State are about to be redrawn, and now is the time to make our voices heard in the process.

The New York State Independent Redistricting Commission has scheduled a series of virtual meetings by region and is accepting public testimony. The public meeting for the Western New York region – which includes Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany Counties – is set for 2pm, Thursday, August 12.

Our three-county region has a somewhat contorted history when it comes to Congressional District boundaries. We are currently part of the 23rd District represented

by Tom Reed, that covers the tier of counties all across the New York State border with Pennsylvania from Ripley to Ithaca, and also extends north through the Finger Lakes to cover that region. In years past, similar district lines comprising a sprawling Southern Tier region, were represented by both Amory Houghton, a Republican, and Stan Lundine, a Democrat.

Following the 2000 US Census, New York State lost two Congressional Districts. Despite a widespread bipartisan effort that included both Houghton and Lundine, Chautauqua County was carved out in a redistricting move that ultimately put us in a north-south district along with Buffalo and Brian Hig716-672-4050 gins represented the county for many years.
