President Biden announces SUNY Fredonia alumna Trini Ross as nominee to serve as U.S. Attorney President Joseph Biden has announced eight nominees to serve as U.S. Attorneys across the country, including State University of New York at Fredonia alumna Trini E. Ross as the U.S. Attorney nominee for the Western District of New York.

In making the announcement, the White House noted, “These individuals— many of whom are historic firsts—were chosen for their devotion to enforcing the law, their professionalism, their experience and credentials in this field, their dedication to pursuing equal justice for all, and their commitment to the independence of the Department of Justice.”

If confirmed, Ms. Ross would be the first female African American to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York.

Ms. Ross has served as the Director of Investigations, Legal Division, with the National Science Foundation’s Office of Inspector General since 2018. She has also been an adjunct professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law since 2006. From

1995 to 2018, Ms. Ross was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of New York, where she served as the Senior Litigation Counsel and the Chief of the Anti-Fraud and Corruption Section from 2012 to 2017. She also served as an Assistant Counsel with the Department of Justice’s Office of Professional Responsibility from 2007 to 2009.

Ms. Ross was previously a civil litigation associate at Hiscock & Barclay, LLC from 1994 to 1995, and served as an Appellate Court Attorney for the New York State Supreme Court from 1992 to 1994. Ms. Ross received her J.D., cum laude, from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law in 1992, her M.A. from Rutgers University in 1990, and her B.A. in Sociology from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1988.

Audubon 2021 Nature Photography Contest Entry Deadline is August 31 Jamestown, N.Y.— You have till the end of the month to take a fresh picture or choose one from your collection to enter into the 2021 Nature Photography Contest presented by Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) of Jamestown, N.Y. Tuesday, August 31, is the deadline for submitting your photograph that could win $200.

Cash prizes of $200 each will be awarded to winners in both the Youth (ages 8 to 18, or still in high school) and Adult (ages 18 or older, or out of high school) divisions in all three categories of: - Fauna – any wild animal, no photos of animals in captivity, such as pets, zoos, or rehab animals - Flora – all plants, fungi, lichens, etc.

- Landscapes/Waterscapes – mountains, forests, fields, deserts, etc.; oceans, lakes, ponds, rivers, creeks, etc.

The six winning photographs and 12 finalists -- six youth and six adults -- will be displayed indefinitely on

the contest website along with the photographer’s name and city/state/country.

ACNC will print the winning photographs to exhibit in the Nature Center, and winners will be named in a news release that is widely distributed, including to their local media, when known.

Fine art nature photographer Karen Glosser is judging this year’s competition.

Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club Announces First Annual Golf Tournament The Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club announces its first annual golf tournament to be held Saturday, August 14th at the Vineyards Golf Course in Fredonia. United Arts Appeal 2021 Fund Drive Closes August 31

JAMESTOWN, NY “Residents and businesses throughout Chautauqua County benefit from the positive impact the arts have on children’s academic success, the region’s economic well-being, and our quality of life,” said United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County (UAA) President Julie Newell.

Newell is encouraging local businesses and individuals to support the UAA’s 2021 fund drive before it closes at the end of the month.

“Our members are eagerly planning to fully resume the in-person classes, rehearsals, and performances that are so important but that couldn’t happen during the oworst of the COVID pandemic,” Newell said. “We’re lcounting on the community to help us make all this possible.”

Contributions to the lUnited Arts Appeal support nthese member organizations: Chautauqua Regional lYouth Ballet, Community Music Project, 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center, Infinity Visual land Performing Arts, Lupcille Ball Little Theatre of Jamestown, and Western New York Chamber Orchestra.

Member offerings range from classes and performance opportunities for all ages in music, art, dance, and theater, to presentations of concerts, plays, dance, and films, from classical to contemporary. The UAA also awards grants for arts projects to individual artists and non-profit organizations through its Projects Pool Grants Program.

Attorney General James Urges Facebook to Combat COVID-19 Vaccine Disinformation in Latino Communities

AG James Leads Coalition of Advocates in Highlighting Concerns Over Vaccine Discrepancies Among Latino Community NEW YORK — New York Attorney General Letitia James today continued the fight against disinformation that has been amplified on social media platforms during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Leading a coalition of advocates in the Latino community, Attorney General James today sent a letter to Facebook, urging the company to address and dispel harmful and inaccurate myths about the virus and the available vaccines, which has resulted in vaccine hesitancy among Facebook users. The Latino community, in particular, has been targeted by inaccurate information about the vaccine, which has led to vaccination rates nearly 45 percent lower than some other ethnic groups. Vaccine hesitancy is even higher among individuals who primarily speak Spanish.

“As COVID-19 continues to spread across the nation and unvaccinated communities, particularly the Latino community, see the worst of the disease, Facebook and other powerful social media companies must choose lives over profits and take real action to combat the spread of destructive lies,” said Attorney General James. “As we near the fall and more New Yorkers begin to move to indoor activities again, it is vital that we encourage those who have not yet been vaccinated to take that step. But the constant barrage of inaccurate information being shared on Facebook has led to vaccination rates in the Latino community barely surpassing 15 percent. Neither language nor ethnicity should be a barrier to receiving accurate information about life-saving medical care. We’re calling on Facebook to take responsibility for its role in allowing these dangerous lies to continue to spread, and to do more to combat this disinformation. We must encourage all, especially our most vulnerable communities, to get vaccinated.”

In today’s letter, Attorney General James leads the coalition of advocates in asserting that low vaccination rates, specifically in the Latino community, are due to misinformation circulating on social media, particularly on Facebook. They write, “Misinformation is undermining the country’s

efforts to end the pandemic and exacerbating racial disparities in COVID-19 vaccination rates. People are using social media platforms to disseminate not only misinformation but disinformation about vaccines, encouraging vaccine hesitancy among Americans. As new virus variants emerge and infection rates begin to rise again, it is critically important that social media companies take stronger action to combat misinformation and encourage vulnerable communities to get vaccinated.”

Specifically, Attorney General James and the coalition note, false information — much of which is written in Spanish — has circulated across the Latino community. This direct targeting of Latino and other Spanish-speaking communities has led to vaccination rates that remain extremely low.

A little more than 15 percent of those who identify as Latino have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, compared to nearly 60 percent of white, non-Hispanic people. A recent study found that over half of those who identify as Latino who have not yet been vaccinated are concerned about the vaccines’ safety and efficacy; among Spanish-speaking people, this number increases to 67 percent. Further, according to one study, Facebook is more likely to flag and place a warning label on false information in English than the same information in Spanish. This has helped contribute to the fact that nearly 40 percent of Latino respondents said they had been exposed to material that led them to believe the COVID-19 vaccines are neither safe nor effective.

Attorney General James and the coalition are calling on Facebook to do more to stop the spread of false and inaccurate information about COVID-19 and the available vaccines that target the Latino community. Specifically, they request that Facebook share its policies and procedures regarding misinformation targeted towards the Latino community, including what tools Facebook uses to monitor Spanish-language and Latino-targeted misinformation regarding the COVID-19 virus and vaccines across its platforms, including on

WhatsApp and Instagram.

The letter also requests information regarding any initiatives that Facebook has underway to amplify evidence-based and scientifically-accurate material to Latino users.

Luca S. Calanni Foundation Approves Additional $14,000 in 2021 Q1 Grants The Luca S. Calanni Foundation (Live Like Luca) is pleased to announce the approval of grants to local organizations this month in excess of $14,000.

“We are so pleased that so much good has come from this tragedy” said Ashley Calanni, Lucas’s mother.

“We smile at the fact that many children will be able to enjoy experiences this summer that would not have been possible without this foundation”.

Grants were made to Hilbert College Basketball Camp, Catching Dreams Charters, St. Francis High School Basketball Camp, The WNY Section PGA, The First Tee of WNY, Northern Chautauqua Catholic School Basketball Camp, and Lakeview Athletics Soccer. These grants will fund sports and camp experiences this summer and fall for over 75 children in the WNY

82nd Annual Westfield Antique Show is August 14 and 15 WESTFIELD, N.Y. - The Annual Westfield Antique Show, sponsored by the Chautauqua County Historical Society, is returning to the village this summer!

After being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the annual antique show returns on August 14 and 15 with a wide variety of items available for sale.

This year’s Antique Show will be held Saturday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eason Hall (23 Elm St., Westfield, NY).

The event will feature antique furniture, dining sets,

glassware, silver, jewelry and much more. Over 20 different dealers will be in attendance.

The Westfield Antique Show has its origin dating back to 1938, when Doc and Edis Shelkey organized the first ever event in Westfield.

The two were well-known local antique dealers during that era and the event was so well attended they decided to hold it each year. Since then the show has become an annual tradition in Westfield and for the past several decades has been organized by the Chautauqua County Historical Society.

STATEMENT FROM THE CITY OF JAMESTOWN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION ON DOW PARK INCIDENT The City of Jamestown Human Rights Commission denounces the hateful vandalism of the Catherine Harris and Silas Sherman statues in Dow Park discovered on the 4th of July in the City of Jamestown.

This racist, anti-Semitic act is a clear example of white supremacy in our city and must be renounced as loudly and powerfully as possible.

The Commission is disappointed by the repeated malicious activity that has happened in Dow Park in recent months. The looting of the Underground Railroad Tableau in May of this year was reprehensible, and this vandalism has made it clear that there is a racist narrative that is becoming more prevalent in our area.

Catherine Harris, Silas Sherman, and many other individuals from Jamestown and the surrounding county, shared an active role in the Underground Railroad.

These activists dedicated their time, money, and opened up their homes to provide aid to people trying to reach freedom.

Due to these efforts, it is estimated that about 30,000 people were able to reach Canada. The City of Jamestown has always played a significant role in the fight for justice and equality and this community will not be defined by the defacement of our statues. We refuse to allow these acts to tarnish their importance. We do not want this to be how these statues are recognized and remembered by the world.

It is our duty as a community to identify this white

supremacist behavior and work tirelessly to obstruct its expression in our neighborhoods. As a Commission, it is our responsibility to acknowledge destructive and hateful acts like those committed in Dow Park, and to ensure that these do not become distinguishing traits of our city. We strive for Jamestown to be known for its strong opposition to any prejudiced, intolerant behavior that does not align with the values of compassion and inclusivity.

Anti-Semitism is defined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/ or property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

Merriam-Webster’s definition is “hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group.” Both definitions can be directly applied to the vandalism at Dow Park.

The Commission does not hesitate to view these actions as unequivocally anti-Semitic and feel that our leaders should treat them as such.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is an organization started in 1913 with a mission “to stop the defamation of the Jewish people, and to secure justice and fair treatment to all”. Their main focus is to monitor, track, expose, and respond to antisemitism

around the county. Their Center on Extremism keeps a running list of reported anti-Semitic incidents in the United States. They use this information to compile yearly audits; comparing the number of incidents to past years, dividing them up by state, and even organizing them by certain locations such as schools, business establishments, college campuses, etc. These audits help provide a small glimpse into the hate and animosity that Jewish individuals face throughout their lives. The incident in Dow Park is now on ADL’s tracker and will be a part of their 2021 audit.

The Commission wants to emphasize that this act was a hate crime, and that we are in support of identifying the involved individual(s) and prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law. As Jamestown residents, we are tasked with the obligation to vehemently rebuke any and all expressions of racism, anti-Semitism, and bigotry. These acts do not define who we are as a community and are in direct opposition to the work we do to represent and highlight our city’s diversity at the City of Jamestown Human Rights Commission.

The Commission urges anyone who may have information regarding the vandalism or the disappearance of the statues at Dow Park to please contact the Jamestown Police Department at (716) 483-7537.

Opera House Cinema Series Presents The Truffle Hunters Fredonia – The next film in the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center Cinema Series is the documentary “The Truffle Hunters.” It will be screened this Sat., July 31, and Tues., Aug. 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes that “in accordance with State guidelines, all COVID restrictions have been lifted for the Opera House, EXCEPT that unvaccinated individuals are required to follow CDC guidance, which calls for masks to be worn at indoor events and social distance to be maintained.”

Now we need to wage the battle once more. We know that New York State will lose a Congressional seat due to last year’s census count. Because our incumbent representative has already made it known that he will not seek re-election, the 23rd District of New York may have a bit less clout in the process. Local Man Helping Children to C.O.P.E. WRITTEN BY MORGAN BONN Local business owner of the Family Martial Arts Center, Bill Matteson, has been working with children for over 23 years throughout various organizations and his business. Through this experience and his own life experience Bill identified a population in our community that is in need of support. Children who have lost a parent due to the consequences of opioid addiction.

On January 05, 2019 Bill’s family lost his son Justin Matteson in an overdose.

Justin left behind his three children, and while he considers his grandchildren one of the fortunate ones because of their support system he realized not every child has the same opportunities as his grandchildren.

With this realization in mind, Bill has set out to create a new organization in Chautauqua, Children of Opioid Parents and Empowerment, or C.O.P.E. The organization’s mission is to bring awareness to the overwhelming facts of drug abuse and overdoses. To focus on children who survive the tragedy of losing a par-

ent to an overdose. Lastly, to inform the children that repeating the cycle does not have to be their path, there is hope.

C.O.P.E has developed a multi-pronged approach to serving its members: Social Interaction, Life Coaching, Physical Healing, and Spiritual Healing. The organization will assist with referring children to its partnerships where children can begin in the process of healing through new fun experiences, talking to life coaches as well as ministries, and using resources available such as the Family Martial Arts Center to receive the physical exercise every growing child needs.

Bill’s hopes are to provide a foundation of support and healing to C.O.P.E members in Chautauqua County, and eventually expand the program outwards towards other states. 2021 CUCURBIT DOWNY MILDEW WARNING

Cornell Cooperative Extension Vegetable Program warns “Cucurbit Downey Mildew is present in neighboring counties and is expected it to be found soon in Chautauqua County and Pennsylvania.” CDM (cucurbit downy mildew) causes rectangular checkerboarding that stays within the boundaries of veins.

Given the current weather patterns, there is high risk that the disease will continue to spread moving on rainstorms. People raising cucumber, melon, pumpkin, and squashshould scout their fields twice a week. Professional growers should be implementing their downy mildew best management practices at this time. Many growers throughout the county have received updates and support for managing downy mildew by subscribing to CCE’s VegEdge Newsletter.

Suspected cases of should be put into a zip seal baggie with a big breath of air or spritz of water and left on the counter overnight to force sporulation. Once sporulating, CDM can be visually confirmed by Cornell Cooperative Extension. 4-H HOPPING AROUND HAPPY

4-H members exhibited rabbits ahead of the 4-H UnFair Dunkirk, N.Y.— The Chautauqua County 4-H Rabbit Project held their show as a part of the 4-H “UnFair” on Sunday, July 18th, 2021 at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds.

This year Paula Murdock from Sherman, NY judged the breed classes and Cale Kunick from Centerville, PA evaluated showmanship classes. The top placings in the Junior Showman class were Katie King, Everett LeBarron and Alexis Cross.

First Year project members placed as follows: Corinne Covert, Lydia Cross, Gavin LeBarron, Johnathan Coblentz, Kiley Jones, and Eddie Light.

Cloverbud participants were Ida Jones, Harrison LeBarron, Onna Warner, Violet Walker, and Madison Griswold. The Champion Senior Showman was Luisa Smith followed by Maggie King, Jack Ewing, Christopher King, Matt Brown, and Lexus Eschenbach. Receiving the honor of Best of Show was Lexus Eschenbach with her English Lop. Reserve Best of Show was Madison Griswold with her Polish.

Everett LeBarron received honorable mention.

The volunteer Rabbit Project Committee who worked to host the show should not go without recognition.

Chairperson Becky King and committee members Kim Chapman, Laura LeBarron, Shari and Alyssa Graziano, Cassie Skal, Emily DeGolier, Tessa Warner, Beth Southworth, and Jen Light planned the show, secured judges, awards, organized a basket raffle and poster contest.
