Find Blessed Biscuits Saturdays at Jamestown Public Market

JAMESTOWN— Be sure to pick up some Father Bernard’s Blessed Biscuits when you visit the Jamestown Public Market Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., on 3rd Street in downtown Jamestown.

If you don’t have a dog of your own, these locally baked, gluten-free, all-natural dog biscuits can be a special treat for your granddog or a dog friend.

Father Bernard’s Blessed Biscuits is a partnership between the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County (MHA) and Jamestown’s St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. A new social enterprise, it was created to support people in recovery as they return to work.

A grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) gave a serious boost to MHA’s OPEN – Occupational Peer Empowerment Network – program that began with funding from the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County and the Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative (ESPRI).

OPEN’s peer specialists support people in recovery

as they enter or return to the workforce. They help them overcome barriers to gaining employment and to thriving as employees. They assist participants to fi nd the resources that enable them to be work-ready and continue to provide a support network on the job.

When COVID forced OPEN to pause, the ARC grant enabled the program to continue, re-tool a bit, involve some new businesses, and take a next step. That step is the creation of Father Bernard’s Blessed Biscuits, a dynamic new social enterprise: a business created to further a social purpose in a fi nancially sustainable way.

Under the leadership of Fr. Luke Fodor, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church made strong connections with the MHA before the COVID-19 pandemic, with services like preparing meals for monthly Recovery Luncheons, sharing space for Refuge Recovery meetings, and funding modest projects.

Jamestown Cruise- In Set for August 6 The Jamestown Community Chamber of Commerce is proud to host the return of Jamestown Cruise-In Friday, August 6! Working in partnership with Der Kobblers Automobile Association, the Chamber of Commerce will host this fun annual event from 5-10pm along Third Street between Washington and Spring Streets.

Regional collectors of classic cars, hot rods and special vehicles will display their cars and trucks. The evening will also feature live music and the Babe Ruth World

JAMESTOWN– The Chamber of Commerce is proud to be partnering with a number of organizations to encourage more people to sample all of the great offerings in Downtown Jamestown – especially on Saturdays! We invite one and all to make Downtown Jamestown your destination each Saturday this summer.

We are collaborating with the Jamestown Public Market, National Comedy Center, Northwest Arena, Reg Lenna Center for the Arts, and Jamestown Renaissance Corporation on Downtown Summer Saturdays! With all that is already scheduled, our goal is to promote the multitude of programs and events as we encourage downtown shopping and dining as part of the tremendous mix of things to see and do.

The Jamestown Public Market is open on Third Street between North Main and Cherry Streets from 10am-2pm. This Saturday, July 10, the market will feature live musical entertainment from Deep Fried and Dipped in Honey starting at 11am. Also be sure to take the kids to the SPROUTs Tent to enjoy a scavenger hunt and other activities! You can also check out the ice bumper cars or public skating at

Northwest Arena from 12:30-2:30; try Yoga with the Birds from 9-10am at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute or Community Yoga at 10:30am at Comedy Center Park; the Robert H. Chautauqua County Announces formal opening of new cell at Ellery Landfill

FALCONER— Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel and Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities Director Brad Bentley announce that the new cell, named “Phase IV” at the Ellery Landfi ll is officially open for business.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued the approved permit recently to the County, which allows the County to open and operate Stage 1 of the new Phase IV cell. In total, the Phase IV new cell consists of three build out stages and is a lateral expansion of the existing landfi ll and sits on approximately 53 acres. The Phase IV Stage 1 sub-cell, which cost approximately $18 million to construct, is about 15 acres in area and is composed of three 5-acre compartments. The existing landfi ll footprint takes up approximately 83 acres. Overall, the property that the County owns at this facility is over 800 acres.

“This is a culmination of over 10 years of work, the last four of which were ded-

icated to the construction of the Phase IV fi rst stage new sub-cell,” said Bentley. “With the approved permit from the DEC, we can now utilize the fi rst stage consisting of approximately 15-acres for the benefit of residents of Chautauqua County.”

“This project has been several years in the making and I am excited to see it come to fruition,” said Wendel.

“Without this expansion capability, the Ellery Landfi ll was projected to have run out of space this year. Once all three stages of the Phase IV Landfi ll Expansion are constructed, it is anticipated to extend the life of the landfi ll for an additional 30 to 50 years for our residents.”

The Ellery Landfi ll and transfer stations are operated by the County and are open to the public to utilize their services. This includes accepting garbage from neighboring counties only to the degree that these waste streams maintain the operation of the landfi ll for the benefit of the residents and businesses of Chautau-

qua County. Therefore, the extra waste and fees that out of county haulers incur, improve the County’s operational efficiencies and help keep the tipping fees for residents of Chautauqua County affordable.

Otherwise, Chautauqua County garbage would need to be hauled to a landfi ll further away with increased costs to residents.

This is a serious disease, and any person without immunity is at risk when community transmission is high.”

Two doses of the hepatitis A vaccine received 6 months apart give the strongest protection. The vaccine is safe and effective.

The Hepatitis A vaccine has been included in the CDC’s recommended child immunization schedule since the year 2000 and is typically given at 12-24 months.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A infection can develop from 15-50 days (average of 28) following exposure. It is common for people to spread the virus when they show no symptoms. Symptoms may include: fever fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark-colored urine, clay-colored stools, joint pain, or jaundice.

If you have any symptoms contact your healthcare provider and be sure to tell them that you may have been exposed to hepatitis A. Check with your primary care provider to see if they offer the Hepatitis A vaccine.

MAYVILLE– In the wake of rising Hepatitis A infections, the Chautauqua County Health Department strongly recommends everyone who has not completed their hepatitis A vaccine series to do so as soon as possible.

Over the past year, Chautauqua County has experienced a dramatic increase in Hepatitis A cases with more than 50 cases detected, compared to 1-2 cases in prior years.

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus, but can successfully be prevented through vaccination.

The virus spreads when a person unknowingly ingests the virus from objects, food, or drinks contaminated by small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person. This can happen from eating at a restaurant as well as sharing food or drink.

People at risk for hepatitis A include: people with direct contact with someone who has a hepatitis A infection, people who use drugs, homeless individuals, and men who have sexual contact with men.

The Chautauqua County Health Department strongly advises all eligible persons to get the hepatitis A vaccine, even if they are not in a high-risk group listed above.

Audubon Seeks Monarch Festival Sponsors and Volunteers JAMESTOWN– Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) is welcoming the full return of its Monarch Bu erfly Festival.

The annual event on the last Saturday in August turns ACNC’s multipurpose room into a garden of flowers and free-flying bu erfl ies as well as nature walks, bu erfly programs, bu erfly garden plants for sale, a food truck, and more.

Both this event and the adults-only Bu erfl ies and Brews the evening before feature the hows and whys of Monarch Conservation, with tables showing their life cycle and some that can be held.

Audubon is pu ing out a call for help for this celebration that welcomes hundreds of visitors.

With programs in both Jamestown and Dunkirk, the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County is a peer recovery center offering support groups and individual coaching for people looking to improve their lives, deepen wellness, thrive in recovery, or support those on a recovery path. Peers use their personal stories to help people fi nd recovery in their own lives in their own way.

57th Annual 4-H Meat Animal Sale Set for July 24th

JAMESTOWN, NY – Chautauqua County 4-H Youth Development will hold the 57th annual Meat Animal Sale at the Warren K. Brown Show Arena on the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds Saturday, July 24th, 2021. The sale begins at 12:00pm noon.

The sale is being held as a part of the “UnFair” hosted

by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County 4-H Youth Development. The UnFair will be held July 21-25 at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds.

Youth will have the opportunity to show their animals and will have club projects on display. Except for the Meat Animal Sale on July 24th, the events are closed to the public.

top-quality animals for the annual sale. This year 57 hogs, 8 market goats, 29 pairs of market chickens, 14 lambs, and 14 steers will be available for purchase.

Market animal projects offer youth a unique experience to learn animal husbandry, feed and nutrition, cuts of meat, how to train an animal to lead, and current industry standards for their species. Not all the work is in the barn, however. Youth keep accurate medical, nutrition, and fi nancial records for every animal project.

They are also encouraged to market that animal to people in the community so that they are sure to get a fair price for their hard work on sale day.

Are you a fi rst-time buyer at the 4-H Meat Animal Sale? Don’t be shy! Arrive early and walk through the barns to see what animals you may be interested in. if a youth has approached you before the fair, be sure to stop in, say hello, and check on the animal you may be purchasing. Make sure that you get a sale book which lists in order every animal that will be sold during the sale. There are no bidder numbers—simply raise your hand and the auctioneer or a spo er will be happy to take your bid.

Once the gavel falls and you have purchased the animal, head down to the show ring for a photo. You’ll also be handed a clipboard with

your sales receipt. You will need to fi ll out your contact information as well as processor trucking information for your animal. Once you purchase an animal it stays on display at the fair until Sunday when it is shipped to the processor of your choice.

Opera House to Reopen with Cinema Series and Dream Horse

FREDONIA – The 1891 -Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center reopens eto live in-theatre audiences ,for its Cinema Series with tthe feature fi lm “Dream rHorse” on Sat., July 17, and -Tues., July 20, at 7:30 p.m.

The fi lm is based on a true story and stars Toni Colle e.

Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis notes that “in accordance with State guidelines, all COVID restrictions have been li ed for the Opera House, EXCEPT that unvaccinated individuals are required to follow CDC guidance, which calls for masks to be worn at indoor events and social distance to be maintained.”

7 reasons to shop farmers’ markets A farmers’ market is likely coming to a field or open parking lot near you — if there isn’t already one operating nearby. The United States Department of Agriculture says that, between the years of 2008 and 2013, the number of farmers’ markets doubled across the country.

Farmers’ markets will continue to thrive and expand as people increasingly realize the benefits of supporting local food providers. Buyers who are not yet familiar with farmer’s markets can examine the following seven reasons to break the ice.

1. Enjoy fresh, seasonal foods.

COVID Pandemic’s ‘Darkest Hours’ Chronicled to Help Light the Way in the Next Crisis MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel recently announced the release of a new book, Our Darkest Hours: County Leadership and the COVID Pandemic, which chronicles the county’s response through the fi rst year of the

COVID-19 pandemic. The book was commissioned by the New York State County Executives Association, through the New York State Association of Counties, to document and share the hard lessons learned by leaders across the State during this

once-in-a-century public health crisis.

“The COVID-19 Pandemic completely changed the way we look at our daily lives,” said Wendel. “We had too many family members and friends who tragically lost their lives and too many

livelihoods were disrupted as businesses closed or faced restrictions in order to contain the spread of the virus. When NYSAC fi rst approached us about its project to chronical what county executives across the state faced with COVID-19, it was not its intention to write a book. However, as our responses came in the project turned into something much bigger.”

Part I of the book comes directly from the wri en or oral histories submi ed by county executives to document what happened in their counties. These riveting fi rst-person accounts provide a glimpse into the fear, struggle, triumph, and pain that local leaders faced as they worked to protect their residents from an invisible and insidious enemy.

“The work that we did to stop the spread of the virus and get our communities vaccinated may be the most important work we ever do as county leaders,” said NYSCEA President Marcus Molinaro. “We felt that we owed it to the county leaders who come a er us to provide an accurate and unvarnished account of what happened so that when it’s their turn to step up as onsite incident commanders, they don’t have to re-learn the same hard lessons that many of us did.”

Part II of the book provides a public policy account of the fractured federal and state response to COVID-19 and explores the economic impact of New York on Pause, the unprecedented state executive powers, and the diminution of local home rule. The Appendices include material relating to congressional actions, the state’s executive orders,

and cases and COVID deaths by county by month from March 15, 2020 to March 15, 2021.

“This book is a commemoration of the struggle and the hardship and what the county leaders went through during the height of the pandemic,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen Acquario. “They were the ones on the ground working 15-hour days, seven days a week for 150 days, coordinating efforts to secure PPE, enforce mask and social distancing mandates while also encouraging residents to check on their neighbors and support struggling local businesses. These are stories that needed to be documented for posterity.

Below is an excerpt from Chapter 4 of the book, which was wri en by Wendel: I call March 15, 2020, our day of infamy in Chautauqua County. That was the day I declared a state of emergency. By then, I’d served as the county executive for less than three months. And here is what I learned: there was no book on the shelf that said, “Dust this off in case of emergency.”

Our fi rst case was eight days later. A 103-year-old woman was admi ed to the hospital for another issue.

She had no symptoms of COVID-19, but she tested positive for the virus.

She fully recovered and was discharged from the hospital. Tragically, others would not be so fortunate.

I put together a team to confront the problems I knew were on their way— the county public health director; three physicians; our emergency services director; the sheriff; and our logistical people. We worked on our approach to informing the public, making sure it was concise and easy to understand.

We sent press releases to the newspapers and posted to Facebook, on my page and the page of the county health department. That evolved into a daily video as the infection rate rose—we were tracking the clusters by zip codes—and once the numbers started to come down, we appeared on fewer occasions until another uptick sent us back to our daily presentation.

One challenge we faced was that we’re the only county in New York that borders Pennsylvania on two sides. Erie County is a dense population center, and Warren County is the opposite. Erie is a large shopping center, and Warren is home to a lot of commuters. Therefore, as Pennsylvania was opened, our economy shi ed to another state; people were even dining out because Pennsylvania’s restaurants were open before ours. So not only were we losing money that, with the pandemic and the shutdown, we couldn’t afford to lose, but COVID-19 was being carried back and forth from shoppers and commuters, complicating our ability to track the spread.

Lakeshore Humane Society will hold its 17th Annual Giant Yard Sale The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold its 17th Annual Giant Yard Sale on Saturday, August 21 from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday, August 22 from 9 am to 4 pm, in Floral Hall at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, 1089 Central Avenue in Dunkirk.

Hot dogs and drinks will be sold both days from 11 am to 3 pm. There will also be a bake sale, basket drawings, and a drawing for a special "Baker's Dream" package.

This event is LHS's biggest fundraiser of the year, as the organization works to help companion animals be safe, healthy, and fi nd permanent, loving homes.

How consumers can show their support for local businesses The road back to normalcy a er the COVID-19 pandemic fi gures to have some twists and turns. Even a er the rollout of vaccines began in late 2020, public health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization emphasized the importance of people keeping their collective guard up, as previously unseen variants of the virus were still being discovered.

A slow march toward recovery has begun, but the uphill nature of that march underscores how important it is that communities continue to come together to support each other as well as the locally owned businesses that make towns and cities so unique. Consumers who want to help the local businesses in their community

rebound and thrive in the months and years ahead can show their support in various ways.

• Take charge of your to-go order. Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed.

Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of

their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

• Continue to be loyal. A recent study from researchers at the Harvard Business School found that a customer’s eighth purchase was an average of 80 percent higher than his or her fi rst purchase. That highlights just how valuable repeat customers are to small businesses. Consumers who have had positive experiences with small businesses in their communities in the past can continue to support those companies by looking to them fi rst when they need new products or services. Doing so not only helps small businesses retain more customers, but it

increases the likelihood that consumers will again have positive buying experiences.

• Share experiences via social media. Small businesses recognize the value of social media. A 2021 survey from Visual Objects found that 74 percent of small businesses in the United States are active on their social media accounts at least once each week. Social media can become even more valuable to small businesses when their customers utilize such platforms to share positive experiences and encourage their friends and neighbors to patronize local businesses.
