Four Sherman Students Given Scholars of the Month Honor by WestfieldMayville Rotary Club

Following her high school graduation, Redlecki plans to attend SUNY Plattsburgh for nursing, where she was accepted into the Honors Program. This scholar would like to become a traveling ICU or trauma nurse.

Kayla Yokom, the May Scholar of the Month, is the daughter of Jeff and Sheila Yokom. She has earned the honor of being the SCS Class of 2021 Salutatorian. She is a member of the Sherman CSD Chapter of the National Honor Society. Yokom was a captain of her high school bowl team and president of her school’s Future Farmers Association (FFA). She is also involved in high school musicals, drama club, softball and trap club.

As a sophomore, Yokom was chosen to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar in Rochester, NY. Through FFA, she received her Empire Degree and qualified for a state competition for creed speaking. As a junior, the scholar received the RIT Computing and Medal Award, and she was named JCC College Connections Student of the Year.

Having academic scholarship, demonstrating leadership and being well rounded students describe four Sherman Central School graduating seniors who have earned the distinction of being named as the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville’s Scholars of the Month for March through June. The honorees are Derek Sears, for March; Haley Redlecki, April; Kayla Yokom, May; and Henry Meeder, June.

Each received a framed certificate of recognition.

Derek Sears, the March Scholar of the Month, is the son of Tim and Cindy Sears. He is a member of the Sherman CSD Chapter of the National Honor Society and is student council president. Sears is very involved in athletics. He was in cross country for two years, football for three years, and he played basketball and baseball for four years.

Sears is a member of the Sherman First Baptist Church, and he attends the Columbus Church Youth Group. After graduation, Sears plans to attend Geneva College to major in math secondary education. He aspires to become a math teacher and a coach.

Fredonia School of Music Wind Ensemble completing historic recording project FREDONIA­— The State University of New York at Fredonia School of Music has announced details of the final phase of a multi-year recording project by the Fredonia Wind Ensemble.

The effort was funded by The Sorel Medallion in Recording Grant and the Carnahan Jackson Foundation, both through the Fredonia College Foundation, as well as a Sigma Alpha Iota Project Grant.

The wind ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Paula Holcomb, commissioned a work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Augusta Read Thomas, featuring bassoonist Nadina Mackie Jackson, the Canadian Best Classical Album winner in 2020.

Ms. Thomas’ work will be premiered and recorded by the Fredonia Wind Ensemble in April 2022, under the direction of Dr. Holcomb, who is Fredonia’s Director

of Bands. The project is a collaboration between the students of the wind ensemble and the school’s Sound Recording Technology area under the direction of Coordinator Bernd Gottinger, a GRAMMY-nominated recording engineer.

The project, which began in 2016, has a primary goal of raising awareness about and filling the need for quality women composers and artists in the wind ensemble

genre, as well as showcasing the Fredonia Wind Ensemble and Sound Recording Technology area.

Borrello lauds Assembly passage of Nourish NY, urges gov to sign

BY JIM ECKSTROM Making a New York farm to food bank program, born out of necessity last year because of the pandemic, a permanent part of the food safety net in the state is one step closer to reality.

State Sen. George Borrello applauded the Assembly’s passage late last month of a companion bill to legislation he co-sponsored that would establish the Nourish NY initiative as a permanent state program. “(May 25’s) passage of legislation that would permanently establish Nourish NY is a victory for its Assembly champions, Catalina Cruz, Donna Lupardo and Chris Tague, and another stride forward for this invaluable relief program,” Borrello, R-Sunset Bay, said. “While Nourish NY’s roots were founded in the tremendous economic hardships that resulted from the pandemic and our state’s lockdown, it quickly became a lifeline for food insecure New Yorkers as well as struggling farmers.”

When familiar supply chains failed, Borrello said the Nourish NY program built new ones between rural farms and urban food banks, helping more than 1 million families in the process.

With the food economy on the edge of chaos because of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, farm products, including milk, were being dumped because of interruptions in processing and shipping. The state’s Nourish NY program was established to get farm products to food banks across the state — benefiting both the state’s agriculture industry and families suffering economic setbacks because of the pandemic.

“During the state’s lockdown, Nourish NY helped over 4,000 New York farms and it provided nourishing, New York-produced food to over 1.3 million households in need,” he said. “It was one

of the silver linings of this crisis and the advocacy for its continuation has come from all corners.”

Borrello and Cruz made an unlikely team in 2020 — a Republican from Western New York and a Democrat from Queens — as they advocated for making Nourish NY permanent. Cruz in particular highlighted the lack of food pantries in her district at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Nourish New York program strengthened our state’s food supply network at a time when our friends and neighbors were most in need,” Cruz said. “But hunger does not end with the pandemic. This program helps combat food insecurity in our communities, while building new markets for our state’s farm products.”

Borrello also thanked the Senate Agriculture chair, Sen. Michelle Hinchey, a Democrat from Saugerties and co-prime sponsor on the legislation in the Senate.

“Our input and voices have been united in support behind this measure, which has the potential to expand the impact of this program many times over,” Borrello said. “I urge Gov. Cuomo to sign this bill as soon as possible, so that permanent implementation can begin and all those involved can move forward with certainty.”

Monthly Scholars continued from 1 Yokom was honored with the College Board National Rural and Small School Recognition Award for her high PSAT score, and she was recognized locally for her almost perfect SAT score. Yokom is a volunteer at the Ripley Rod and Gun Club. In the fall, she will be attending Virginia Wesleyan University to major in environmental studies.

Henry Meeder, the June Scholar of the Month, is the son of Curt and Elizabeth Meeder. He has achieved the distinction of being named as the SCS Class of 2021 Valedictorian. He is a member of the SCSD Chapter of the National Honor Society. Meeder is involved in many school activities, including trap club, basketball and Future Farmers Association.

Meeder served as secretary and treasurer

of FFA, and he received many awards from the organization. He placed 1st team at a state convention, and he was a member of the silver group for overall competition at a national convention. As a junior, Meeder received Chatham University’s Rachel Carson Healthy Planet Award, the RIT Computing and Medal Award, and he is the Rensselaer Medal Award winner.

Outside of school, Meeder has volunteered with Sherman’s Saturday morning basketball club and Habitat for Humanity. In the fall, this scholar will be attending SUNY Cobleskill to enroll in the dual majors of agriculture business management and fisheries and aquaculture.

The Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville is pleased to congratulate Derek Sears, Haley Redlecki, Kayla Yokom and Henry Meeder as Sherman Central School Scholars of the Month. Revitalization, repair of Maytum/Reed/McEwen Plaza gets underway at SUNY Fredonia FREDONIA—The State University of New York at Fredonia is improving the look and accessibility of campus, while preserving the vision of campus architect I.M. Pei and Partners, by initiating a major renovation of the plaza outside Maytum Hall, McEwen Hall and Reed Library.

The Maytum/Reed/McEwen Plaza will receive a thorough renovation that will repair the concrete while increasing the safety and functionality of the area. Pavers around the outside of the second floor of Reed Library and McEwen Hall will be replaced, while the steps that lead to the area on both sides will be repaired. Additional handrails will be installed on the steps, and the concrete paving replaced along the entire ground-level portion of the plaza. The work will also repair concrete in the amphitheatre. A ramp will be added to the amphitheatre for improved stage

Lighting will be added throughout the plaza area, including on handrails. Additional electrical outlets will be installed, to allow more functions to be held in the space.

“The plaza and connected walkways are literally in the heart of SUNY Fredonia’s academic complex, and these renovations will restore the original functionality while improving the aesthetics and safety of the area and protecting I.M. Pei and Partners’ original campus design,” said Fredonia President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. “It will be exciting to see this vital intersection on our beautiful campus improved and updated.”

The project will require fencing around the area, which has been installed this week. The contractors awarded the project will then establish an access road within the quad between Maytum/Reed and Mason

halls extending from Symphony Circle to McEwen Hall. The creation of the access road will require two installed pieces of artwork in the area to be moved. SUNY Fredonia has consulted with the original artists on the appropriate handling of each piece to ensure they are protected and preserved. “Popeye,” the red circular sculpture between Maytum Hall and Rockefeller Arts Center, will be disassembled and placed in storage until the project is completed, while “Stockpiles” will be moved to another visible location on campus.

Due to the size and scope of the project, the renovation of the Maytum/Reed/ McEwen Plaza will take approximately two years to complete. The total cost of the project is $5,300,000.

This Capital Plan Project is funded through the State University Construction Fund.

JAMESTOWN— Community gardening is alive and serving the gardening public. The Chautauqua County Master Gardeners, to demonstrate support of the Jamestown Community College Community Garden, donated $150 towards materials for the reconstruction of raised gardening beds and gardens maintenance.

The original beds were constructed with the assistance of BOCES at the opening of the gardens in 2012 and are now in need of replacement.

The labor for reconstruction was donated by the Community Garden volunteers Tom Meara and Dan Zabala.

These gardens are open to the general public for the season at a nominal subscription fee. Currently all the garden beds are subscribed at JCC for the 2021 season. Also, there are other community gardens in Jamestown operated by the Jamestown Public Market in association with St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

with locations at the corner of Washington and 8th Street and the corner Lakeview and 6th Street.

The Master Gardener program will be using the JCC-Community Garden as their demonstration site beginning this year. The community demonstration garden program will offer beds tended by Master Gardener volunteers using suggested types of plantings, and gardening with proven techniques. Also, at 6:00 pm on the third Wednesday of the month, through September, the area is open to the public for an instructional session called “Evening in the Gardens”. This space is also used to support the Seed to Supper training, targeted to beginner gardeners. Please call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 644-9502 for more information. County operated Parks return to full operations FALCONER— The Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities Division of Parks and Recreation has announced that Luensman Overview Park and Erlandson Overview Park will be returning to full operations on May 28, 2021. This includes the opening of the restroom facilities at each park. Reservations are required for any gathering or organized event that wants to reserve the gazebo at either park. Brocton Student Completes Rotary Leadership Program

Connor Utegg, a Brocton Central School junior, recently completed the Rotary District 7090 Student Leadership Award Program for Students High On Training (SLAPSHOT). His attendance in this youth leadership program was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville and was coordinated by Dan Smith, Club Youth Services Chair and Rotary District 7090 Vocational Training Team Chair. Utegg was one of forty student participants in the May 2-8, 2021 virtual training. Due to the pandemic, the program was held via Zoom instead of the in-person camp experience in Ancaster, Ontario.

Utegg, who is the son of Aaron and Jennifer Utegg of Portland, was the guest program presenter during the May 25 Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville meeting at the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield. Club President Jan Berkhouse welcomed and introduced Utegg. Mr. Jason Delcamp, Brocton Central School District Superintendent, and other members of this Rotary club were present to hear Utegg’s excellent presentation and to ask a few questions.

“Thank you to the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club for this amazing experience,” Utegg said. “I learned a lot of great skills, such as critical thinking, how to

work with people in a group, and ways to challenge myself and others to take some risks. Coming from a small school, we don’t have a ton of leaders. SLAPSHOT gave me the opportunity to interact with other students, get some fresh ideas and learn how others help their communities. It was phenomenal!”

This promising young leader is president of the BCS Class of 2022, vice president of the BCS Chapter of the National Honor Society, captain of the combined varsity Chautauqua Lake, Westfield and Brocton football team, and head of the prom committee. He is a member of the BCS Interact Club, and as such he participates in various school, community and international service projects. Interact clubs, which are affiliated with Rotary International, have high school student members who are interested in volunteer service.

This year’s SLAPSHOT consisted of seven virtual “campfire” sessions, held daily and each lasting less than two hours. The theme was “LEADER,” or learn, evolve, adapt, discover, energize and Rotary. The sessions focused on critical thinking, growth mindset, mental health, skill inventory and empowerment. Skilled facilitators and engaging speakers led the sessions. Participants, who had to complete a minimum of four of the

seven sessions, learned about what it takes to be a leader and how they could apply fresh ideas to everyday challenges.

Utegg stated, “SLAPSHOT gave me the motivation to take some risks. Every day I am using so many things that I learned. I stay in touch with almost everybody in the program, and we exchange ideas for community service. This experience was phenomenal, and I loved every minute of it. I would totally recommend this program to other high school students. SLAPSHOT helps you to open up your mind, accept some new approaches and take some risks. When you change your mindset, you learn a lot more.”

Jason Delcamp, who is the BCS Superintendent, BCS Interact Club Advisor and a Westfield-Mayville Rotarian, described Utegg as being “responsible, respectful and a person who follows through with doing what he says he will do. I am looking for Connor to use his leadership skills with our Interact club this next year and come up with some new ideas for service projects.”

The Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville congratulates Connor Utegg on completing the Rotary District 7090 SLAPSHOT training. This inspiring and focused young leader certainly has a promising future!

Wind Ensemble continued from 1 internationally renowned female composers and artists who provide a diversified voice for the wind ensemble genre. The Sorel Organization’s mission is, “to expand opportunities and stretch the boundaries for women musicians in the fields of conducting, composition, film scoring, performance, arts leadership, education, and scholarship.”

“The genre of wind ensemble music needs a more diversified voice with respect to both composers and performers of quality repertoire,” added Dr. Holcomb.

“The need for the female voice is particularly glaring.”

“It is truly an honor to work with the Fredonia Wind Ensemble and Sound Recording Technology department as they rise to meet the challenges of performing and recording with these world-renowned musicians,” commented Dr. Holcomb. “They are relentless

in their zeal for excellence and passion for music. With the deepest of gratitude, we thank the [Elizabeth and Michel] Sorel Charitable Organization, Sigma Alpha Iota and Carnahan Jackson organization, who are opening doors for many young musicians at Fredonia while also supporting the development of quality, diverse wind ensemble repertoire."

In addition to the Thomas world premiere, the wind ensemble has completed recording works featuring international artists including Valerie Naranjo, a Native American composer and percussionist for “Saturday Night Live” and Broadway’s “The Lion King;” Gail Williams, former Associate Principal Horn for the Chicago Symphony and National Brass Ensemble; Dan Perantoni, tubist for Summit Brass; Jim Stephenson, a composer who has been commissioned by the Chicago Symphony, Boston Pops, and New York Pops; Sue Fancher of the Amherst, Vienna and Red Clay saxophone quartets; Mark Engebretson, a composer who has received Harvard University’s Fromm and Barlow foundation awards; Dr. Hol-

comb, who has conducted in 42 states and five continents; and Mr. Gottinger.

“To date, no wind ensemble recording exists with female artists of such renown,” said Holcomb.

“Thus, in promoting these female artists, the recording will become a ‘first of its kind.’ Furthermore, by providing young musicians with examples of music of the highest artistic order, written and/or performed by women, the recording project promises to hasten change in the band world.”

Works already recorded for the project include the Pure World West African Concerto for Marimba, Gyil and Wind Ensemble (19392007) by Jeno Kakraba Lobi/ orchestrated by Andrew Beall, including movements Tierra Pura - Valarie Naranjo, Fer Barre Kona Ba-ere Yotere, and Gmeng Sa Na E - Kakraba Lobi, with Ms. Naranjo on gyil; Concerto for Soprano Saxophone and Wind Ensemble by Mr. Engebretson, featuring Ms. Fancher on soprano saxophone; and “Vast and Curious” by Mr. Stephenson, featuring Ms. Williams on horn and Mr. Perantoni on tuba.
