Two Westfield Seniors Awarded Rotary Scholars of the Month Honor BY SUE HAMMOND Academic achievement, leadership and volunteerism are some of the traits that describe two Westfield Academy and Central School District senior students who were recently honored as Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville Scholars of the Month. The honorees were James Northrop for Mar. 2021 and McKenzie Wolfe for Apr. 2021. Each received a framed certificate as a token of recognition. James Northrop, a senior, is the son of William and Sherry Northrop. During this scholar’s high school career, he enrolled in nine Jamestown Community College courses, in addition to
his high school courses. At the end of his senior year, Northrop will have earned 30 college credits. He will graduate in June 2021 with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and with Mastery in Science. Northrop is a member of the We The People team that placed second in the state and that recently participated at the national level of competition. He earned the WACS Academic Achievement Honors Patch, as well as the Academic Achievement Academics Pin #1, Pin #2 and the Academic All-Star Pin. Throughout his high school career, Northrop earned his place on the honor roll be-
cause his grade point average was above 90%. He is a four-year member of the senior high chorus, and is a member of the Apemen, an all-male choral ensemble, and also Westwinds, a select choral group. Northrop is a member of the handbell ensemble and the drama club. He was in the cast of the school productions of The Adventures of Nickelboy, Newsies, A Christmas Carol and Camp Rock. Outside of school, Northrop volunteers with the Westfield Golden Hawks football team, and he has held employment at Sunset Sky Farms. In the fall of 2021, he will a end Clarkson University to pursue a de-
gree in Business. McKenzie Wolfe, a senior, is the daughter of Jason Wolfe and Amanda Ross. This scholar enrolled in rigorous coursework. As a participant in Jamestown Community College’s Connections Program, she enrolled in nine JCC courses. At the end of her high school career, Wolfe will have earned 26 JCC college credits. In addition to her high school courses, Wolfe is enrolled in one SUNY Fredonia course. During her junior year, she was enrolled in one SUNY College at Buffalo course. She will graduate in June 2021 with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Mastery in

Hunt held several positions on Reed’s staff, including field representative, director of constituent ser-

Borrello’s trust in my ability to lead his dedicated staff and help guide his legislative vision,” Hunt, a graduate of Penn State University, said. “In just a year and a half, he has established himself as one of the hardest-working members of the Senate and a fierce champion for his district.” Hunt is succeeding Michael Ellison as chief of staff. JAMESTOWN — Catharine M. Young, executive director of the New York State Center of Excellence for Food and Agriculture at Cornell AgriTech and a former New York state senator representing Chautauqua and Ca araugus counties, will present the keynote address during SUNY Jamestown Community College’s virtual commencement ceremony on May 14. A longtime champion of agriculture and economic development, Young was named to her current post in March 2019, and oversees a business hub that connects startups and established food, beverage and agriculture technology companies with the resources they need to succeed. Prior to her role at Cornell, Young served for 20 years in the New York State Legislature representing Western New York. A passionate voice for rural communities, she rose to a top leadership post in the state Senate and made history when she became the fi rst woman to chair the powerful Senate Finance Commi ee. Her career in public service began in 1995 when she won a seat on the Ca araugus County Legislature. Prior to elected office, Young worked in public relations and communications. She a ended SUNY Fredonia and graduated magna cum laude from St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. “It truly is an honor to celebrate these outstanding graduates who have conquered many challenges in the face of a pandemic and global crisis to earn their degrees,” said Young.
“JCC has given them the quality solid foundation they need to be successful in their careers, and each individual’s achievements are harbingers of their success as they take on the world. Their resilience and hard work will pay dividends going forward and we are proud of their accomplishments. My sincere congratulations to all of the graduates and those who helped them grow.” JCC’s virtual commencement ceremony will air on its website on Friday, May 14 at 6 p.m., during which graduates will be recognized and have the opportunity to hear from Young and other guest speakers. Great Valley native Ginna Hensel, a homeland security and psychology double-major, has been selected as the student speaker. The celebration will include more than 1,200 names of pending spring 2021 graduates, in addition to graduates who completed their degree in the summer or fall of 2019 as well as the spring, summer, or fall of 2020. The ceremony will be available on-demand following its conclusion. Those graduates will also be given the opportunity to walk across the stage at the clock tower of the college’s Ca araugus County Campus on Saturday, May 15 or pondside at its Jamestown Campus on Sunday, May 16. The outdoor ceremony will follow health and safety guidelines from public health agencies. In-person events are subject to change. New Jersey woman sentenced in Jamestownarea meth ring case BUFFALO — A 26-year-old New Jersey woman was sentenced in U.S. District Court to serve 5 years in prison for her role in a Jamestown-area methamphetamine ring. U.S. A orney James P. Kennedy Jr. announced the sentencing Monday. Hall, of Harrison, N.J., was convicted of conspiring to possess with intent to distribute and distributing 5 grams or more of methamphetamine. She was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo. Assistant U.S. A orneys Misha A. Coulson and Brendan T. Cullinane, who handled the case, said that between March 2017 and October 2018 Hall conspired with 15 other co-defendants to operate a drug trafficking organization, primarily involving the distribution of methamphetamine, in the Jamestown area. During the execution of search warrants throughout the investigation, law enforcement officers recovered 10 fi rearms and multi-
ple rounds of ammunition, more than 20 cellular telephones, drug paraphernalia and U.S. currency. All 16 defendants charged in this case have been convicted. Hall is the 7th defendant to be sentenced.

School where she takes care of all the students, staff, and coaches. Rosie is awesome and never lets anything slip through the cracks. As a school nurse caring for the wellbeing of the Falconer community throughout the pandemic she is a great nominee as a COVID-19 hero. Stephanie Kelly is an RN at Heritage Village and has gone above and beyond to make sure her residents have had the best care possible during this pandemic. Carelessly coming in early and staying late nights, never leaving her fellow coworkers stranded. Her passion and dedication to her career are admirable. Charlene Burch also works at Heritage Village in Gerry and always puts the needs of her residents fi rst. She is a team player, always pitching in when she can, and has been a great leader for her coworkers during these trying times. Brigid Wonderly is the Infection Control Nurse at UPMC Chautauqua. When the fi rst symptomatic patients started coming to the ER, Brigid was there doing the swabbing. She has worked 7-days per week since the start, and tracks all of the data the hospital sends daily to the state department of health. She does all of the internal COVID-19 tracing of patients and staff as well. Brigid ensures everyone has and is using proper PPE, and educates staff and patients alike on precautions they should take. With all of the daily pressures of her job she has never been anything but compassionate, professional and caring. UPMC Chautauqua is proud to have Brigid on their team.

From the fi rst week of the Pandemic, Tammy has worked relentlessly to keep everyone connected and active via virtual classes, and once available in-person classes. These virtual classes helped her members keep their sanity and feel connected in a new social distancing reality. Once it was approved to offer in-person classes, she knew there would be members who weren't ready to do that so she continues to connect them virtually while leading her classes in person. She keeps everyone engaged and has perfected this dual instruction. Kenneth Long II has been on the front lines daily as an RN in the Emergency Room at Brooks Memorial Hospital. Day in and day out, he is faced with taking care of patients with COVID-19 and other illnesses and ensuring their best health and treatment is achieved. He puts himself aside and always puts others fi rst. Dr. Mary Ann Spanos is the director of the Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services, and was a key leader in facilitating the vaccine waiting list for seniors. Early in the vaccine process when appointments were very limited, she recognized many seniors may have a difficult time navigating the website to schedule an appointment. By quickly coordinating with other agencies, she developed a system where seniors could call NY Connects who would then put their information on a waiting list, helping thousands of seniors to get their vaccine. MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel and the COVID-19 Response Team recently announced the twel h week of COVID-19 Hero nominations for April 26-30. Nominations are recognized in a video posted weekdays on the Chautauqua County Government Facebook page, and each nominee receives a personal note from the County Executive’s Office. “Our heroes this week continue to reflect the important theme of those caring for the wellbeing of others,” said County Executive PJ Wendel. “I want to again personally thank our week twelve nominees: the Lutheran Nursing Home staff, Tamara Racino, Kenneth Long II, Dr. Mary Ann Spanos, Rosie Digirolamo, Stephanie Kelly, Charlene Burch, and Brigid Wonderly. These individuals have risen to the challenge of helping others during a global pandemic, and are truly our COVID-19 Heroes.” The staff at the Lutheran Nursing Home have worked together to keep residents safe, and have had very few residents or staff positive for COVID-19 during the pandemic. The team works hard to provide care and activities in a safe manner. They have also done their best to keep families in contact with each other through virtual visits and window visits during this difficult time. The staff deserve recognition for ensuring the health and safety of all their residents! Tapestry Resilience Initative asks you to “Flip The Script” MAYVILLE — As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, May 2 through 8 is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week (CMHAW). Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene (CCMH) and Tapestry Resilience Initiative invite you to join in the celebration of this important week designed to raise awareness surrounding the emotional, psychological and social well-being of our communities’ youth, their families and caregivers. Mental Health Awareness month has been around since its inception in 1949, but it wasn’t until 1991 when the importance of raising mental health awareness and reducing stigma surrounding children’s mental health became an important focus, resulting in the actual celebration of awareness and advocacy in 2004 designating the fi rst full week of May annually as CMHAW. The National Federation of Families has declared the theme of this year’s recognition as “Flip the Script.” The thought behind this theme
is that community members are responsible for addressing the mental health needs of its children and youth. It is important to set an example on how to treat ourselves and take care of our mental health as well as how we treat others facing mental health challenges. “A er the past uniquely challenging year, we are hearing about our mental health more than ever,” said Tapestry Resilience Initiative Program Director Rachel Ludwig. “This is an opportunity to embrace the topic and to change the way we think about mental health. Mental health is on a continuum of wellness to illness. It is not static. Mental Health is impacted by our environment; by our supports and our connections. Over the past year, children and youth’s mental health has been impacted greatly as they do not have the perspective of a wider world view or larger sense of time. I hope this recognition month serves as a prompt to have positive and caring conversations about mental
health.” Tapestry Resilience Initiative was created through a federal system of care grant to assist Chautauqua County to work as a community of care for children and youth with emotional and behavioral challenges and their families. A System of Care is a network of programs and services that creates a framework for support that encourages and supports providers to partner to develop an accessible, responsive, appropriate and effective delivery system.
