Named in the memory of Professor Emeritus Robert Jordan, who taught at the School of Music from 1980 to 2004, the festival will feature solo and collaborative piano music written by diverse/underrepresented composers, including women, African Americans and members of the LGTBQ

All festival events will be virtual and free to the public, but online registration is required to receive Zoom links.

Nina Simone, a singer, songwriter, musical arranger and civil rights activist whose music spanned a broad range of styles – classical, jazz, folk, R&B, gospel and pop – said in a famous interview that the role of the artist is “to reflect the times we are living in,” said School of Music Assistant Professor Eliran Avni.

Schumer in Jamestown to tout Rescue Plan, aid to performing arts venues

JAMESTOWN — Standing in the National Comedy Center, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer said “help is on the way” as he detailed specifics from the American Rescue Plan passed last month.

Schumer, D-N.Y., explained that the ARP contains even more for New York’s live independent venues, which are eligible for their own federal pandemic relief thanks, he said, to a provision he championed.

The U.S. Small Business Administration recently announced that the Save Our Stages program will open to applications on April 8 after Schumer’s continued push to implement the program. SBA has also released an updated PPP application that now allows venues to apply for a PPP loan as well as a Save Our Stages grant,

$1.25 billion for independent live venues, performing arts organizations, independent movie theaters and cultural institutions and included a fix that allows venues to access a PPP loan and a Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, deducting the PPP loan amount from the grant amount.

Schumer said the additional funding and technical fix would be a lifeline for New York’s independent venues, hard-hit by the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Previously,

as Schumer intended with the fix included in the recent COVID bill.

“Independent venues, theaters, concert halls and cinemas are the beating heart of New York’s cultural life and a driving force in the Western New York economy,” Schumer said. “These local businesses were among the first to shut down at the start of the pandemic, are struggling to stay afloat, and will be among the last to fully re-

Opera House streams internationally recognized Bluegrass band FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center will present the internationally acclaimed bluegrass band Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road in concert on Saturday, April 10, at 7:30pm. The concert will be streamed live from the mountains of North Carolina, home of the band.

“We’re so excited to be presenting this streamed performance,” notes Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis. “Liam and the band were scheduled to perform live on our stage back in 2020, but rescheduled to this month, thinking that the COVID pandemic surely would be over by now. Since it is not and we are still closed, we accepted the band’s offer to stream the performance live from their home base of operations rather than ask them to drive 12 hours to play to an empty theatre.”

Rapidly rising on the bluegrass scene, Billboard-chart-

ing artists Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road perform internationally winning both industry awards and the hearts of fans who turn out to see them at some of the most iconic venues and festivals: MerleFest, Floyd Fest, Grey Fox, Wide Open Bluegrass, The Station Inn, and Silver Dollar City, just to name a few of the hundreds of places played over the past six years.

Named Momentum Band of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) in 2019, the group has been recognized as one of the fastest growing bands on the scene.

The group’s latest release, “Roots,” debuted at #6 on the Billboard Bluegrass Album charts, and was streamed more than 30,000 times within two weeks of its release.

Purcell & Cane Mill Road has performed on national TV on PBS three times, including being featured this

season on David Holt’s State of Music Show. The band’s first four albums resulted in 12 weeks total on Billboard’s Bluegrass Album chart including a #2 spot right behind Billy Strings. The band also is featured on Jim Lauderdale’s album “When Carolina Comes Home.”

Growing up just down the road from Doc Watson, Purcell leads Cane Mill Road as the group rocks the traditional bluegrass standards Purcell was raised on, yet boldly writes original music with roots in the fertile grounds of bluegrass, oldtime and Americana.

Purcell is only 18, yet the multi-instrumentalist garnered two IBMA nominations for IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year, and was one of the youngest musicians selected for the Savannah Music Festival’s Acoustic Music Seminar.

The Chautauqua Center in Dunkirk has received $1,893,750 in federal funding that is part of $397 million in emergency federal funding for 63 community health centers across New York state.

The money, part of the American Rescue Plan to help expand COVID-19 vaccination, testing and treatment for underserved populations, was announced

by New York’s U.S. senators, Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

“New York’s Community Health Centers are a cornerstone of the state’s healthcare system and have been our frontline armor in the battle against COVID-19, especially in underserved and disadvantaged communities where COVID hit the hardest,” Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader, said. “This critical federal investment, that I fought to secure in the American Rescue Plan, will help Community Health Centers maintain their vital operations, providing health care to those at high risk of contracting COVID-19, and continuing to administer vaccines to as many New Yorkers as possible.”

Distribution of funding will begin in April through the Health Resources and Services Administration.

HRSA-funded health centers are community-based and patient-directed organizations providing primary health care to high-need urban, rural and frontier communities across the country.

Mayville man, 21, dies in I-86 crash BEMUS POINT — A 21-year-old Mayville man was killed in a single-vehicle crash the afternoon of April 6 near Bemus Point.

Joseph Zatyko was the driver, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Bemus Point firefighters and sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of the crash at about 3:10 p.m. Authorities said Zatyko’s eastbound vehicle on Interstate 86 veered off the southern shoulder and struck the bridge of the Westman Road overpass.

Zatyko was pronounced dead at the scene, the deputies said.

Poet Meg Day to give virtual craft talk, poetry reading

FREDONIA– Meg Day, a poet and author of the award-winning “Last Psalm at Sea Level,” will present a craft talk on Wednesday, April 7, and a poetry reading on Thursday, April 8, both at 7 p.m., via Zoom, as part of the Mary Louise White Visiting Writers Series at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

An assistant professor of English and Creative Writing at Franklin & Marshall College, Dr. Day identifies as genderqueer and deaf, which both play into their poetry, especially in a series of self

portraits in “Last Psalm at Sea Level.”

“We are not static beings,” Day was quoted as saying in an interview. “I think of a self-portrait as trying to find the right title for yourself: what lens can I look through to be sure that I see myself right.”

Day also explores deaf identity, sometimes in poems that feature erasures or redactions. Day’s poems are powerfully image-driven, frequently focused on poetic forms, and in many cases written as both personal testimony and as advocacy,

Quarantine for domestic travel no longer be required

ALBANY– Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that domestic travelers will no longer be required to quarantine after entering New York from another U.S. State or U.S. Territory starting April 1st. While no longer required, the NYS Department of Health still recommends quarantine after domestic travel as an added precaution.

Mandatory quarantine remains in effect for international travelers.

All travelers must continue to fill out the Traveler Health Form. Individuals should continue strict adherence to all safety guidelines to stop the spread - wearing masks, socially distancing and avoiding gatherings.

“New Yorkers have shown strength and perseverance throughout this entire pandemic, and it shows through the numbers that continue to decrease every day,” Governor Cuomo said. “As we work to build our vaccination infrastructure even further and get more shots in arms, we’re making significant progress in winning the footrace between the infection rate and the vaccination rate, allowing us to open new sectors of our economy and start our transition to a new normal in a post-pandemic world. As part of that transition, quarantine for domestic travelers is no longer required, but it is still being advised as an added precaution. This is great news, but it is not an all-clear for New Yorkers to let their guard down. To beat this virus once and for all we all must continue doing what we know works to stop the spread, including wearing masks, washing our hands and practicing social distancing.”

Regardless of quarantine status, all individuals exposed to COVID-19 or returning from travel must: Continue daily symptom monitoring through Day 14; Continue strict adherence to all recommended non-pharmaceutical interventions, including hand hygiene and the use of face coverings, through Day 14 (even if fully vaccinated); Must immediately self-isolate if any symptoms develop and contact the local

Day’s work explores identity and the change inherent to it, connection to and distance from others, and interrogates the idea of “a wrong body,” both in terms of disability and gender identity, Mr. Sheehan explained.

As Day shared in another interview, “how could you have a body that is wrong? I can imagine being unhappy with your body, I’ve been there. I can imagine being afraid of your body, I’ve been there. I can imagine wanting your body to change, or be different in many ways.

But wrong is such a projection from the culture in a way that I think is so scary and damaging. It implies that others know better than you do about what your body should be.”

For both the craft talk and the reading, Day will be joined by an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, Emily Phipps, to help ensure accessibility.

Day has a Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing, with an emphasis on disability poetics, from the Univer-

sity of Utah, a M.F.A. from Mills College and a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego.

“Last Psalm at Sea Level” won the Barrow Street Press Poetry Prize and the Publishing Triangle’s 2015 Audre Lorde Award. Day is also the author of two award-winning chapbooks: “When All You Have is a Hammer” and “We Can’t Read This.”

Reg Lenna Center for The Arts reopens for movies JAMESTOWN–Reg Lenna Center for The Arts reopened to the public for movie showings Wednesday, April 7 at 2 p.m. with The Croods: A New Age. The animated family film will show again Saturday, April 10 at 2 p.m.

As classical musicians today, we have a responsibility to make more conscious choices about the repertoire we play, repertoire that reflects the fight for inclusion and basic human rights,” Dr. Avni commented.

“In doing so, we start to become part of the solution, instead of remaining part of the problem. The classical music pantheon has to evolve to include these forgotten voices. This festival is a tiny little step in that direction.” Avni said.

Special guest William Chapman Nyaho will be featured in the festival’s first session, “In and Out of Africa: Exploring Piano Music of Africa and its Diaspora,” on Monday, April 12, at 7 p.m. Dr. Nyaho, who teaches at Pacific Lutheran University, will discuss the diversity of styles of piano music, the influences of traditional musical forms, such as dance, jazz and blues, as well as Western European compositional practices on compositions in Africa and African diaspora.

School of Music Professor Fr. Sean Duggan considers Nyaho, who he knew when both were living in Louisiana, to be a wonderful pianist and musician who has been doing the musical world a great service by bringing together wonderful piano compositions by various underrepresented composers.

Fredonia students, faculty and special guests will present a piece of their own choosing by an underrepresented composer that they are passionate about, with the goal of introducing a new repertoire to a wider audience, on Saturday, April 17, at 7 p.m. All presentations will be uploaded onto the School of Music’s YouTube library so they can be shared with the public.

Members of Fredonia’s Piano Area will present the festival’s Celebration Concert, a live streamed performance featuring music by underrepresented composers, on Thursday, April 22, at 8 p.m.

The Piano Area set out this semester to explore what it considers to be a vast and inspiring body of work written by these composers and find ways to make it more widely known among pianists and audiences alike.

That exploration led to the creation through the Fredonia College Foundation of the Heid Fund, dedicated to purchasing scores and promoting performances of music by underrepresented composers and creating a special collection of these works in Fredonia’s Reed Library. A database of these works is being compiled to help students explore this repertoire.

Organizers of the festival say the past year has shown there is still much more to be done in terms of creating balance and equality in the canon of classical music.

The festival has received generous support from The Robert Jordan Piano Scholarship and Distinguished Lectureship Endowment established through the Fredonia College Foundation.

Tim Galati is Audubon Community Nature Center 2021 Scholarship Winner JAMESTOWN– Every spring since 2003 Audubon Community Nature Center (ACNC) education staff have raised scholarship funds through their Birdathon on the first Saturday in May. Participants look for as many species as possible and generous supporters pledge an amount, either per species or in total.

For the first time, this year’s birdathon extends over nine days, from May 1 to May 9. Amounts raised above the $500 for the Ryan Exline Memorial Scholarship will go toward the Pamela A. Westrom Wildlife

Habitat now under construction (AudubonCNC.org/ pawwh).

Tim Galati, a senior at Southwestern Central School, is the 2021 recipient of this scholarship that is awarded to a local resident pursuing a degree in the natural sciences. The son of Amy and Tony Galati, Tim plans to earn a Bachelor’s degree through the Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation program at Canisius College in Buffalo. His interests include playing soccer on his school team, boating, fishing, and volunteering throughout the community,

especially the SPCA foster program.

Ryan Exline was an early recipient of the scholarship now named in his memory.

The Russell, Pa., resident assisted with Audubon gardening, eagle care, live animal care, and education programs. He was pursuing a master’s degree at Duke University when he died in a car accident.

Senior Housing Residents Vaccinated MAYVILLE– The Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services (OFAS) recently partnered with Rite Aid to help senior housing residents in Jamestown, N.Y. receive COVID-19 vaccines.

“While all pharmacies have been focused on vaccinating seniors over the last few months, on-site clinics like these bring vaccines to people who need it most, where they are,” said Dr. Mary Ann Spanos, OFAS director.

“We were excited to hold a vaccine clinic for senior housing residents in Jamestown,” said Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel. “These residents are a priority, because of transportation and computer issues and shared spaces in these buildings. We were pleased to help get these seniors vaccinated as soon as possible.”

Rite Aid held an on-site vaccine clinic, March 12, 2021 at 21 West 3rd St. in Jamestown. Nearly 200 people living in downtown Jamestown, mainly at Covenant Manor, the Hotel Jamestown, and High Rise buildings, were vaccinated during the clinic. Covenant Manor Staff and Housing Authority Board members also provided support for the clinic.

Rite Aid will return to Covenant Manor Friday, April 9th, to provide residents vaccinated at the first clinic with their second dose.
