Alpine Surf Club presents donation to Ellicottville skatepark project ELLICOTTVILLE — Last ski season, a couple of avid local snowboarders banded together and created the Alpine Surf Club. Sharing a passion for the winter sport, it was a fun and informal way of getting out each week to shred the slopes of Holiday Valley with friends. Following the early 2019-20 season ender, the group, spearheaded by Mike Miller and Jason Klein, both of Ellicottville, began working on branding Alpine Surf Club with custom T-shirts, designed by Miller himself. Familiar with the efforts of a local group of skateboarders to build a skatepark in Ellicottville — and former skaters themselves — the duo decided to use their club’s tee’s to help raise money for the skatepark project. They sold Alpine Surf Club tees to fellow club members, friends and family, and donated all proceeds to the Ellicottville Skatepark fundraising campaign. Altogether, Alpine Surf Club raised $800 from the sale of the shirts, and on Aug. 25, Alpine Surf Club presented a donation check

to SK8EVL, the advocating group spearheading the skatepark project. “Growing up, skateboarding was a nice outlet for me,” said Miller. “It gave me drive, focus, and a sense of accomplishment. I’m glad we could give something back to skateboarding and support a great cause that will benefit our community.” “On behalf of the Ellicottville Skatepark Committee, we’re excited to have Alpine Surf Club be a part of the fundraising process,” said Chris Perks, SK8EVL committee member. “We’re all a bunch of local skateboarders and snowboarders, and we all have kids who will benefit from the new skatepark. Thank you Alpine Surf Club. Glad to have you a part of this!” SK8EVL, with support from the Ellicottville Village Board, is currently in fundraising mode and is working towards their goal of raising $250,000 to build a skatepark in Ellicottville’s Village Park. Thanks to a matching grant,

every dollar they raise is being doubled by the Tony Hawk Foundation/Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation. As a result, the Alpine Surf Club’s $800 donation will turn into $1,600 to apply towards the construction of the skatepark. It is the initiative taken by individuals and groups like this, that, when pieced together, will result in future success for our community as a whole. The skatepark committee has until Nov. 30 of this year to raise as much funding as possible for the match. They are currently 25% of the way to their goal. Gowanda Scarecrow Contest guidelines announced GOWANDA — In addition to the first, second and third place medals that will be awarded in the Gowanda Scarecrow Contest, the Gowanda Area Chamber of Commerce will be giving gift certificates to the top three vote-getters. While the exact dollar amount of the certificates has not yet been finalized, they will redeemable at a Gowanda business of the recipient‘s choice. Registrations for the contest are currently being accepted. The full contest guidelines are as follows: 1. Registration for the scarecrow contest will be ongoing through Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. 2. Registrations may be submitted by online at http://Gowanda-NY.com/ fallfest/2020 or on paper forms available at the Gowanda Free Library and Gabel Brothers. You may also print your own registration form using the .pdf version of the form

found on Gowanda-NY. com. Paper registrations can be turned in at the same locations in Gowanda as mentioned above during regular business hours for each location. 3. Scarecrow display tags and locations will be available Sept. 23. The Gowanda Free Library will be handling the distribution of the scarecrow tags. 4. Yes, you’ll get muddy, yes there is running, yes there are 11 obstacles but NO fire, NO barbed wire and NO electric shocks! Holiday Valley Resort is hosting the ninth annual Mudslide Obstacle Race on Saturday, September 19. This off-road run takes place on the Holiday Valley ski trails where up to 500 runners must navigate eleven obstacles along the very muddy 3.5 mile or 5.4 mile courses. The number one goal of the event is to have fun and people of all ages and varying fitness levels are encouraged to join in. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Jim Kelly’s Hunter’s Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to giving hope through education and awareness, research, and family care for Krabbe, Leukodystrophies, and Newborn Screening. The schedule of the event will be slightly different this year to comply with the COVID-19 restrictions. Packet pickup and the start of the race will occur over a period of time to prevent congregating. Racers will not have to wear masks while running, but masks will be required before and after the race. Hand sanitizing stations will be available at each obstacle.

Upon completion of the race, competitors can pick up their medals, goody bags and snacks and then will be encouraged to exit the finish area. The first racers will start at 10 a.m. at Spruce Lake at the top of Holiday Valley’s mountain. A ride to the start on the Spruce Lake chairlift is included in the entry fee. The 3.5 mile course travels across the cross country trails on the top of the mountain, then down the ski slopes to finish in front of the Mountain Sports Center. The short course elevation has a downhill drop of 600 feet. Eleven obstacles will be placed along the trail including a maze, a balance beam over a giant mud puddle, “lily pads” in Spruce Lake and the final challenge is a giant mud slide down lower Yodeler. The 5.4 mile course adds a loop that includes a challenging uphill and a few more obstacles. Medals will be awarded to all finishers. Prizes will be awarded to the overall three fastest males and females in both the short and long courses. The City Garage of Ellicottville will supply a pair of women’s and men’s Salomon trail running shoes for the top male and female runners in the long course.

What are some potential signs of ECM issues? The automotive service provider Aamco notes that a faulty or failing ECM will exhibit various symptoms. However, it’s important to note that these symptoms are not always indicative of issues with the ECM, so when they arise drivers may want to schedule appointments with their mechanics so the true culprit can be identified and the problem can be fixed. • Check engine light comes on: Many drivers have experienced the dreaded check engine light, which indicates some type of issue with the engine. That issue can be a failing engine component, or it may indicate a failing or bad ECM. A mechanic can determine why the light has come on. • Engine performance issues: Even though the ECM is a separate entity from the engine itself, a bad or failing ECM can affect engine performance. That’s because such ECMs throw off the timing and fuel settings of the engine, leading to a sudden and noticeable reduction in engine performance. Engine power may be affected, and the vehicle may experience a drop in fuel efficiency and issues with acceleration. • Vehicle will not start: A failed ECM means the vehicle won’t start, as there’s nothing controlling the engine to tell it do so. Failing ECMs may lead to struggles starting the vehicle, and whenever drivers experience these issues, they should consult their mechanics immediately so the issue does not escalate to the point where the engine won’t start at all.
