Salamanca school district welcomes new Chief Equity and Diversity Officer

The Salamanca City Central School District welcomes Justin Schapp as the Chief Equity and Diversity Officer for the district. Schapp is a citizen of the Seneca Nation and is well suited to continue the district’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives for all students. He will facilitate best equity practices focusing on four key areas of

support: access, capacity, opportunities and outcomes of educational services for students, regardless of socioeconomic, cultural, gender, ability, language, sexual orientation and racial background. Schapp is experienced navigating Indigenous issues, public policy, public administration, law and diversity. A graduate of Salamanca, he began his career working in the private sector before transitioning to governmental administration and obtaining his Masters of Law from Oklahoma University’s College of Law.

Ellicottville Golf Outing Join us in September for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing and get in 9 holes before the season ends. It’s the most fun you can ever have in a golf scramble. Join us September 10th for the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing and get in 9 holes before the season ends. It’s the most fun you can ever have in a golf scramble. Come as a group, a single or whatever, we’ll match you up in a memorable foursome. Chamber members and nonmembers are all invited. Our 9-hole outing is a fun-filled afternoon on the course as well as dinner at Holiday Valley. Golf starts with a 4 p.m. shotgun. It doesn’t matter if you are good or not so good, the key in our outing is just to have fun. All skill levels are welcome to participate.

Once you’re done with the course and scores are tabulated, dinner will be served at Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge. You’ll be well-taken care of by the great staff. During dinner, awards will be given and fun games for prizes will take place. Sign up fees include green fees, cart, dinner and two drinks compliments of Holiday Valley Food Service. Ellicottville Chamber members can participate for $50 a person and non-members for $55. Want to come for the food alone and not have fun on the course? It’s just $35. Golfing is reserved to the first 64 people.

This contest has been a featured event of Gowanda’s FallFest Weekend for many years, held the last weekend of September. Paper registration forms for the contest will be available at Gabel Brothers Furniture and the Gowanda Free Library beginning Tuesday, during regular business hours. Veggie Wheels continues service through pandemic challenges The Veggie Wheels program is entering the penultimate week of its sixth summer, having overcome the unique circumstances and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to support a healthier tomorrow for disadvantaged in Cattaraugus County. Every week, Veggie Wheels volunteers deliver fresh produce to residents at Alder, Seneca, West and Spring Courts as well as Aspen Tower and Manor in Olean and Hillview Manor and Hillview Homes in Salamanca, thus enriching the nutrition of between 120 to 150 members of our community. Veggie Wheels leaders established a fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation in 2018 to ensure the continued viability of the program. The agency also received a $1,000 grant from the WNY COVID-19 Community Response Fund to support its services in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Veggie Wheels has worked to close the gap in access to healthy foods for disadvantaged populations at locations in Cattaraugus County who face challenges in finance, transportation and more in

obtaining a healthy diet. The pandemic has posed additional challenges to that mission, said Athena Godet-Calogeras, who resumed management of the Veggie Wheels program due to Cattaraugus County Health Department employees needing to focus on duties related to COVID-19, but the program and its volunteers have overcome those challenges to lead another successful year. “Because of the pandemic, we have limited contact with the people we serve,” said Godet-Calogeras. “When we’re finished with the packaging, we welcome each recipient, make sure masks are worn and social distance is maintained, and offer each a bag of produce (sometimes with recipes) that we’ve picked up that morning from Great Valley Berry Patch, Wilson’s Farm. Springville Center for the Arts to offer fall programming Springville Center for the Arts is offering programs for school-aged children this fall to complement their virtual and in-school learning. A variety of full day and half day sessions are tailored to the interests and needs of the students. Full day sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The half day sessions will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Springville Center for the Arts’ creative team will assist students with their required virtual learning in the mornings. In the afternoons, Students will explore photography, sculpture, dance, music, theater, painting, drawing and more. Students will work on community service projects. The program is geared both for homeschool pods and parents to fulfill music, arts and physical education requirements or for families looking for extra time in the

creative areas during this challenging time. Students in the full day programs are automatically enrolled in the half day afternoon program of the same day. “We are excited to expand our offerings this Fall to include daytime programs. With modified traditional school formats challenging families’ schedules, we hope to help fill in some gaps while providing engaging and enriching arts offerings,” explains project coordinator Kingsley Kolek. The program begins on Thursday, Sept. 10. Cost is $30 per full day and $15 per half day per student. Morning programs are designed for K-5 and afternoon arts programs span grades K-8. Hinsdale Haunted Campout 2020 Join Para Expeditions for a weekend of high strangeness at the haunted Hinsdale House. They will be exploring several areas of the unexplained including ghost hunting, Bigfooting, UFOs, mysterious campfire tales and more! There will also be books, t shirts, spiritual items, etc for sale during the event. The event starts at 6pm Friday, September 4th and wraps up at 10am Sunday, September 6st. The Hinsdale House is located at 3830 McMahon Rd, Hinsdale NY. Dinner (pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and sides) along with snacks and soft drinks are included with the event. You are required to supply your own

camping gear and supplies. A restroom or porta potty will be available and water/electricity is limited to inside the house only. Saturday will be mostly at your leisure until the event starts again at 6pm. We are working on adding some daytime activities so stay tuned. Tickets for this event are limited. SEPTEMBER IS RECOVERY MONTH National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance usetreatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life. Young adulthood is a period of incredible transition marked by personal growth and a newfound sense of independence. Many young adults confront that transition while simultaneously dealing with a mental health issue or substance abuse disorder. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 had a higher prevalence of serious mental illness when compared to adults between the ages of 26 and 49 and adults age 50 and older. In addition, SAMHSA notes that more than five million young adults report having a substance use disorder. Such issues can make the transition from teenager to young adult more challenging, potentially compromising young people’s ability to live full and independent lives.

Treatment is vital when confronted by mental health or substance use disorders, and far too many young adults report receiving no treatment at all. For example, SAMHSA notes that 87 percent of young adults with substance use disorders report receiving no treatment for their conditions. Learning to recognize these common signs may compel young adults to seek treatment, while loved ones of young adults who notice any of the following signs can encourage men and women to seek treatment. · Trouble sleeping or oversleeping · Loss of interest in hobbies and friends · Feelings of anxiousness · Changes in overall energy levels · Changes in appetite and weight · Feelings of hopelessness · Difficulty in daily functioning · Extreme mood changes · Thoughts of suicide The National Institutes of Health urges anyone concerned with their mental health to bring those concerns to the attention of their primary care providers. The NIH notes that people with mental health conditions can be at risk for other medical conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. In addition, the National Institute on Drug Abuse notes that addiction can increase a person’s risk for various diseases, including cancer and HIV/AIDS. People who suspect they or a loved has a mental health or substance use disorder are urged to contact their primary care physicians. Treatment options and additional resources also are available at www.samhsa.gov.
