Sixth ancillary facility surrounding WVDP main plant demolished
WEST VALLEY — Crews recently demolished the 6,955 square foot Utility Room building (UR) at the West Valley Demonstration Project. Built in 1964, the UR was used to produce and distribute various utilities required for Main Plant processes. This recent demolition brings EM’s total number of structures removed at West Valley to 67. The UR was constructed with a steel frame, concrete block and masonry exterior. The single-story building measures 79 feet wide, 88 feet long and 23 feet
high. With a reinforced concrete slab, the building’s foundation will remain intact until the WVDP Phase 1 Decommissioning - Soil Remediation contract is awarded. DOE WVDP Director Bryan Bower commended the team for its work. “The landscape and footprint around the Main Plant has been changed forever and is a sign of the ongoing progress here.” The UR included utilities; potable, cooling and demineralized water; utility and instrumentation air; high- and low-pressure

Pfeiffer Nature Center Woods Walk at the Lillibridge Property Saturday, September 26thMonday October 12th One of the largest events that PNC hosts is the annual Woods Walk celebration. This fundraiser is instrumental to keeping Pfeiffer Nature Center open and available to the community. Since they cannot host the walk in their traditional manner, they have modified this year’s Woods Walk with COVID safety measures in mind. The Woods Walk will take place at the Lillibridge Property, 1974 Lillibridge Road, Portville, N.Y., over a two week time period beginning on Saturday, September 26th and will go through Monday, October 12th. Two walking routes will be pre-designated for you to choose from and will include an easy 30 minute walk and a moderate 45 minute walk. Or, if you prefer, you can walk any of the trails that you like for as long as you would like. The Lillibridge trails are
open from dawn til dusk. Choose a date and time of your liking and enjoy the beauty and charm of their Old Growth Forest. Please follow all COVID social distancing rules that are in place for our protection. Feel free to send them comments, photos and selfies of your participation to: naturalist@ pfeiffernaturecenter.org to be shared on their website. To participate, there is a $25 registration fee for adults and a $15 registration fee for children. A Pfeiffer Nature Center t-shirt will be given to each person who registers. Community Fund Grant applications due to CRCF October 21
CA-BOCES CTE programs receive national accreditation
ELLICOTTVILLE — The CA BOCES Career & Technical Education (CTE) division recently received national recognition and accreditation for two programs — Power Equipment Technology and Heavy Equipment Operations — through the Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation. Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) is an international trade association representing over 800 construction equipment distributors, manufacturers, and industry-service firms.
The AED Foundation focuses on growing the future workforce through professional education and accreditation of programs at both the high school and college levels. As part of the accreditation process for both programs, a thorough program analysis by an industry task force is required along with an audit of how the work in the program meets the AED Foundation’s National Technical Standards. OLEAN — Applications for the next grant funding cycle of the Community Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation are due October 21. The Community Fund at CRCF provides grants to nonprofits for deserving projects and initiatives that support efforts to meet the changing needs of the community, said CRCF Executive Director Karen Niemic Buchheit. Applicants must be 501(c) (3) organizations. The CRCF board of directors reviews applications based on the applying organization’s stability, the impact its work has on the community, the feasibility of the project proposed in the grant application and the role a grant from the Community Fund would play in the overall project, said Buchheit. Community Fund grants are disbursed in two funding cycles each year – once in November and once in May.
“Responsive grantmaking is always a focus for CRCF,” said CRCF Executive Director Karen Niemic Buchheit. “The Community Fund provides us an opportunity to support the efforts of the nonprofits in our community as they work to execute special projects and initiatives that make Cattaraugus County a better place to live, work and play. “In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that those needs are quickly changing,” she continued. “It is essential that we help position our nonprofits to respond to those changing needs.” Applications are available online at cattfoundation.org under the grant seekers tab. Project Head Start has openings for preschool and Pre-K
Cattaraugus and Wyoming Counties Project Head Start has openings for its full day five-day center-based preschool programs for children three to five years of age, along with the homebased Early Head Start program serving pregnant woman and children from birth to age 3. Project Head Start is a free federally funded, full day, child development program and the local Head Start has 17 classrooms at seven locations in Cattaraugus County, including Olean, Salamanca, Franklinville and Delevan and Wyoming (Warsaw) County. Head Start, in collaboration with school districts in Franklinville, Hinsdale, Olean and Salamanca, also has openings in its Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) classrooms for children who turn four years of age by Dec. 1. Head Start’s UPK classrooms are located at East View and Washington West Elementary schools in Olean; at the Elm Street location in Olean; at the Salamanca Center in Salamanca; and at Franklinville Elementary School in Franklinville. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, class sizes have been reduced, and children spend the day with the same group of children throughout the day as part of Head Start’s overall Safety Plan. Early Head Start’s homebased program serves Cattaraugus and Wyoming Counties, providing weekly home visits throughout the
year. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, visits are currently being held in open spaced environments or virtually through other forms of communication. Early Head Start hosts group socializations 22 times a year which are currently held virtually. Early Head Start implements the Parents as Teachers curriculum, which uses family-friendly activities and resources that engage families in children’s learning. Head Start and Early Head Start programs are child focused programs with the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children. Head Start’s mission is to empower families’ well-being while nurturing and educating children for school and life. Enrollment is open to all children of Cattaraugus or Wyoming counties regardless of race, sex, creed, color, national origin or disabling conditions, whose family income falls within the federal poverty guidelines. Provided all income eligible children are enrolled, children of non-low-income families who are experiencing various severe hardships such as disabilities may also be eligible. Children and families who are homeless, in foster care, or receive TANF or SSI are also eligible for services. Michelin Tires states that tires should be rotated around every six months, or between 6,000 and 8,000 miles. • Vehicle fluids: Your best bet is to see what the manufacturer recommends in regard to fluids such as transmission fluid, differential oil, brake fluids, coolant, etc. Some transmissions need regular maintenance, while others can go 150,000 miles between changes, according to the vehicle information site The Drive. Coolant typically can last 100,000 miles. For these types of changes, it may be best to go to a mechanic or service center familiar with your make and model rather than a quick-lube center, as knowing when to drain and refill can be more complicated. Service schedules can be designed to adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations and drivers’ personal preferences.

World’s Largest Ghost Hunt Weekend in NYS
During the weekend of the World’s Largest Ghost Hunt during National Ghost Hunting Day, we will be visiting Wildwood Sanatarium on Friday, September 25th and the Hinsdale on Saturday, September 26th. paranormal community in Bryan, Ohio for two and a half years with the Hunt the Town events held there. THE HINSDALE HOUSE Known as one of the most terrifying and violent houses in New York. The house has a history of ghostly manifestations, levitating objects, and even an exorcism. For many years the Dandy family worked with a priest from St. Bonaventure University, he was at the house more than once to perform an exorcism which worked for awhile but as time went by
the Dandy family lost the battle and ended up leaving the house for good. As the years passed by a few families have lived in the home but didn’t stay for long. Within days of moving in, the Dandy family began to experience strange paranormal activity that only continued to grow worse as time went on. Most often the phenomena would manifest in the form of mysterious phone calls and a variety of poltergeist activity. Sometimes, the family would even hear chanting emanating from the nearby woods. At one point, the family then began seeing full-body apparitions of woman in white, bizarre animal-human hybrids, even what they believed could be demonic, nonhuman entities. One of the more frightening stories is that the family would go on to tell was of a night when they noticed a group of strange faces staring in their windows. However, when Mr. Dandy ran outside to chase away the trespassers, the faces reversed and were then peering back at him from the inside of the house. It
was at this point that the hauntings began to turn violent. Objects began levitating around the house, and at one point a lamp from the living room threw itself at one of the Dandy daughters. The last straw came when Mr. Dandy experienced a state of amnesia, unable to remember some of the most frightening incidents. When Father Alphonsus came to the house, this is when things turned even more violent. Lights in the house were turning on and off, unexplainable banging filtered through the walls, and a terrible sense of an evil presence drifted through the home. Documentation on the Hinsdale House continued in 2000, when Clara MillerDandy penned the book “Echoes of a Haunting”, which detailed her family’s terrifying experiences while they lived in the home from July 1973 to October 1974. WILDWOOD SANATARIUM A sign located on the property reads; (1909) “The sanitarium and bath house is now open and for the treatment of all conditions except
infectious and contagious diseases. We have endeavored to make the conditions inside the house as pleasant as possible and will try to give each patient individual attention.” Haunted History Trail of New York State writes, “The Wildwood Sanitarium was officially opened in 1906 as a Sanitarium and Bath House. It was a holistic healing center and the only one of its kind in NYS at the time it opened. Dr. Henderson and Dr. Perry specialized in Osteopathy Therapy and also welcomed in patients seeking a cure for alcoholism, drug addiction, all conditions except infectious and contagious diseases offering each patient individual attention and had a bath house in the basement. Later, it became a Tuberculosis Clinic in 1923, then owned by several different families and later opened as apartments. Over the years it has been known to have paranormal activity including shadow figures, orbs, Electronic Voice Phenomenon and people have reported being touched or pushed.”
