Proceeds to benefit the 27-mile Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail The Station Bistro, in West Valley, will host a special Chili Lunch & Raffle for the Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail (ECRT), on Saturday, September 12 from 12 noon until 4 p.m. This fundraiser with friends event - a “friendsraiser” will increase awareness and encourage support for the future 27-mile rail trail built on a former rail line that connects Orchard Park to Ashford. The Bistro’s 12 Chili Lunch is open to the public; advance reservations or tickets are not required. Food and drink specials will be available for purchase, including homemade chili and Railroad Spike beverages, along with raffles including: a onenight stay at the Lucky Day Cabin, compliments of owner Emily Tingue a $50
gift certificate to the Station Bistro two tickets for a guided trail tour along the Foothills Trail. Proceeds from the menu items and raffles will benefit ECRT, Inc. ECRT board members will be on hand to answer questions, provide updates on trail progress and encourage community support. Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail, Inc. is a 501(c)3 volunteer organization formed to create a linear park along the former Buffalo-Pittsburgh Railroad (B&PRR) corridor extending from Orchard Park to Ashford, NY. In 2018, ECRT, Inc. and B&PRR reached a longterm federal rail banking agreement to begin construction of a 27-mile multi-use recreational trail. Today, a 1.7 mile Springville section of the trail – the Pop Warner Trail – is open with an additional 3.5 miles cleared but unfinished north to Genesee Road. Catt County sets drive-thru rabies clinic at county fairgrounds on Sept. 19
LITTLE VALLEY — The Cattaraugus County Health Department will offer a drive-thru rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets at the County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 19. The rabies clinic is free, but reservations are required. Donations will be
accepted to help defray costs. To register, go online to www.CattCo.org/rabiesclinic or call (716) 7013386. Pets need to be on a leash or in a pet carrier. Facial coverings are required by humans due to the coronavirus pandemic.

SEPTEMBER IS RECOVERY MONTH National Recovery Month (Recovery Month) is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance usetreatment and mental health services can enable those with a mental and or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life. Young adulthood is a period of incredible transition marked by personal growth and a newfound sense of independence. Many young adults confront that transition while simultaneously dealing with a mental health issue or substance abuse disorder. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 had a higher prevalence of serious mental illness when compared to adults between the ages of 26 and 49 and adults age 50 and older. In addition, SAMHSA notes that more than five million young adults report having a substance use disorder. Such issues can make the transition from teenager to young adult more challenging, potentially compromising young people’s ability to live full and independent lives.
Treatment is vital when confronted by mental health or substance use disorders, and far too many young adults report receiving no treatment at all. For example, SAMHSA notes that 87 percent of young adults with substance use disorders report receiving no treatment for their conditions. Learning to recognize these common signs may compel young adults to seek treatment, while loved ones of young adults who notice any of the following signs can encourage men and women to seek treatment. · Trouble sleeping or oversleeping · Loss of interest in hobbies and friends · Feelings of anxiousness · Changes in overall energy levels · Changes in appetite and weight · Feelings of hopelessness · Difficulty in daily functioning · Extreme mood changes · Thoughts of suicide The National Institutes of Health urges anyone concerned with their mental health to bring those concerns to the attention of their primary care providers. The NIH notes that people with mental health conditions can be at risk for other medical conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. In addition, the National Institute on Drug Abuse notes that addiction can increase a person’s risk for various diseases, including cancer and HIV/AIDS. People who suspect they or a loved has a mental health or substance use disorder are urged to contact their primary care physicians. Treatment options and additional resources also are available at www.samhsa.gov. Mental Wellness in Cattaraugus County Fund grant applications due Oct. 1 Applications for this year’s grants from the Mental Wellness in Cattaraugus County Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation will be due Oct. 1. “We know that the mental wellness of a community and its members is integral to its overall health and wellness,” said CRCF Executive Director Karen Niemic Buchheit. “We also know that the COVID-19 pandemic has put additional stress on the mental health of so many, making this fund and its purpose even more essential this year.” Grants from this fund support program services and activities that promote and support mental wellness in Cattaraugus County. Typically grants will range from $500 to $1,500, but up to $4,000 may be available
for special projects, particularly those that impact vulnerable and/or disadvantaged individuals. The grant application can be accessed at cattfoundation.org/ grant-seekers/grantopportunities/. Nonprofit agencies with questions about the grant application process are encouraged to contact CRCF at (716) 301-2723 or foundation@cattfoundation. org. Former members of the dissolved Mental Health Association of Cattaraugus County established the fund to financially support programs and activities that promote mental wellness in Cattaraugus County. The NHTSA says that removing one’s eyes from the road for a mere 5 seconds when traveling at 55 miles per hour is like driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed. Reducing distractions should be a priority for all drivers. Here are some suggestions, courtesy of Geico insurance and AAA Exchange. • Store loose gear and other items that can roll around away from the driver’s seat so you are not tempted to reach for them. • Adjust mirrors, GPS maps, climate controls, music, and more before you put the car in drive. • Use a mobile phone only for emergency purposes and only after pulling over to the side of the road. Avoid social conversations on the phone while driving. • Limit the number of passengers you allow inside your car. The more passengers, the more distractions. This is especially true for young drivers. • Eat food before getting in the car. Snacking while driving makes you less attentive to the road around you. • Secure children and pets accordingly. Both should wear harnesses and not be given free reign to roam around the car. • Try to focus only on driving while in the car. Leave the multitasking to when you’re not behind the wheel.

The weekly I LOVE NY fall foliage color reports began Wednesday, Sept, 9 and continue until the end of the foliage season, usually around the first week in November. Each Wednesday afternoon throughout the season, reports are updated on iloveny.com/foliage
to provide the latest information on color conditions in each region of the state – including a highresolution color progression map. Reports are also available by dialing, toll-free, 800-CALL-NYS (800-2255697) from anywhere in the U.S., its territories and Canada.
