It may not be ski season, but Holiday Valley is worth the trek year-round with outdoor fun like Sky High Adventure Park, now in its tenth year of operation. Located at Tannenbaum Lodge near the end of Holiday Valley Road, the resort’s Aerial Park, Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and Climbing Forest are open daily and chairlift rides to Spruce Lake are open every weekend. In order to follow safety guidelines, Holiday Valley has taken several measures to sanitize, decrease touch points and allow for proper social distancing at Sky High. The Aerial Adventure Park is the largest of its kind in New York state and third largest in the country. The park offers a series of platforms, “bridges” and zip lines built in a 4-acre section of the woods, With 13 courses with varying levels of difficulty, the
challenge is to get across from one platform to the next. At the park, everyone wears a harness with a special locking lanyard that safeguards you from falling if you slip or let go. Children must be at least 7 years old, and all guests must be able to perform certain physical tasks to participate. There is a weight limit of 265 pounds. Also at Sky High is the Climbing Forest, a 3-D version of a climbing wall and the only one of three in the country. It was designed by Franz Muller of Monkey Hardware, a German company, and Bahman Azarm of Outdoor Ventures, also the designer of Sky High Aerial Park. The Climbing Forest features nine trees outfitted with color-coded climbing holds with the difficulty ranging from very easy (yellow) to very challenging (purple). Each climber is fitted with a harness that is clipped into an
Auto Belay system. Once a climber reaches the top of the tree at up to 45 feet, they just let go and the belay system slowly lowers them to the ground. The minimum age to enjoy the Climbing Forest is 5 years old and 30 pounds. There is also a kids’ area with two trees where the youngest climbers can climb about 6 feet up and climb back down. The Climbing Forest is open daily through Sept. 11 and then weekends through Oct. 25, weather permitting. If you’re looking for thrills that don’t include climbing, check out the Mountain Coaster, a roller coaster built on a mountain. One or two riders sit in a car attached to rails that pull you up the hill, then follows a zig-zagging and spiraling path down the mountain. Riders are able to control their speed with brakes on the car. The driver must be at least 8 years old, 54 inches tall and be
able to demonstrate they understand the staff’s instructions to be a driver. Children must be at least 3 years old and over 38 inches to accompany a driver who is at least 16 year old. Riders must be able to perform certain physical tasks to participate. To finish off the afternoon in a relaxing way, enjoy a chairlift ride to Spruce Lake. You may explore Spruce Lake and walk down the trail or ride back down on the chairlift. Chairlift rides are $10 per person, children 6 and younger are free. Dogs are not allowed on the chairlift. During the COVID pandemic, masks are required to ride the chairlift and only one rider per chair except for family members who are living together. Ellicottville native to perform at “Welcome Back To Hope” concert Aug. 8 A free, social-distancing safe concert is set to take place next weekend in Jefferson Street Park The “Welcome Back to Hope” concert will take place Saturday, Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. and feature Ellicottville native Will Lowry. This concert is cosponsored by the Seneca Salamanca Chamber of Commerce and the Salamanca Industrial Development Agency. Lowry is a singersongwriter who began his career in Ellicottville. After learning the basics of folk guitar from a local art teacher, he taught himself to play in the rock and blues style and began with local bands playing in Ellicottville. Lowry moved to Boston, Mass. and studied classical guitar under a private instructor. Lowry began writing music, blending his influences of folk, rock and classical guitar and recorded his first album in 1979, “Mystery.” In 2019, Lowry recorded his fifth album,

“Colours and Lines.” He has played many venues, from college campuses to large festivals, from local gazebos to Greenwich Village. Concert attendees are asked to wear a mask. Ellicottville Rotary cancels Tuscan Moon dinner
The Rotary Club of Ellicottville’s major fundraiser, Tuscan Moon, has been canceled. The annual event was scheduled to be held at John Harvard’s Tamarack Pool Complex at Holiday Valley on Aug. 29. The popular event consists of dinner from many of Ellicottville’s fine restaurants, live music and a silent auction. Last year’s event sold out with more than 150 people attending. The proceeds from Tuscan Moon provide the bulk of revenue necessary to fund both the Ellicottville Rotary Foundation for Youth and the Family Support for Ellicottville
Youth. Local programs supported are ECS student scholarships, the Food Pantry, The Ellicottville Library, and more. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, The Rotary Foundation for Youth & Family Support worked with Ellicottville Central Schools (ECS) to supplement the ECS meal program. Ellicottville Rotary, in conjunction with local restaurants, provided over 4,000 meals to local families.
