Another structure demolished at West Valley Demonstration Project WEST VALLEY — Crews recently demolished the 7,000-square-foot utility room building at the West Valley Demonstration Project. Built in 1964, the utility room was used to produce and distribute various utilities required for Main Plant processes. This is the sixth of seven Main Plant support structures demolished, and brings EM’s total number of structures removed at West Valley to 67, said spokesman

Joseph Pillittere. The utility room was constructed with a steel frame, concrete block, and masonry exterior. The single story building measures 79 feet wide, 88 feet long and 23 feet high. Bryan Bower, Department of Energy WVDP director, commended the team for its work. “The landscape and footprint around the Main Plant has been changed forever, and is a sign of the ongoing progress here,”

Bower said. WVDP officials hope to begin open air demolition of the Main Plant this year. John Rendall, president of CH2M HILL BWXT, West Valley cleanup contractor, said employees continue to perform work safely

while adhering to COVID-19 protocols. “Our team continues to complete demolition work at the site in a safe and environmentallysound manner,” Rendall said.

CA BOCES launching scholastic esports league CattaraugusAllegany BOCES is launching a program to leverage the appeal of esports for meaningful career education connected to regional and national video game tournaments. The CA-BOCES Scholastic Esports League (CASEL) will be an affiliate of the North America Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF). The esports industry is booming, and students are excited to play in video game tournaments and to pursue related STEM careers. NASEF’s programs, curriculum and expertise are offered completely free to enable educators to tap that student excitement for meaningful

learning. Through NASEF, students learn about possible career pathways, enter Beyond the Game creative and analytic challenges, manage clubs and events and fundraising — and, yes, compete in tournaments. There is strong demand from schools to develop an official esports program, and CattaraugusAllegany leadership carefully evaluated options to provide students with a meaningful opportunity. “When our component school districts asked us to help them get involved with esports, we weren’t really sure what we were getting

be more excited about the affiliation between NASEF and (the CA BOCES league),” she says. CASEL will kick off its affiliation by sharing NASEF scholastic esports curriculum with its 22 component school districts to help the formation of esports clubs. The Student Programs team will coordinate and schedule scrimmages and regular game matches for each season, and they plan to host regional tournaments in Rocket League and League of Legends and will include “Beyond the Game” challenges as well. National Grid warns of new phone scam National Grid warns about a phone scam in which callers promise customers refunds or discounts and try to obtain their bank account information. The scam is especially problematic during the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused many people financial stress, the company said. According to the energy provider, this is how the scam works: Customers receive a call from a phone number that appears to be from a nearby town or even the neighborhood where they live. When customers answer the phone, a recorded message tells them they have been overbilled and are owed refunds or discounts on their utility bills. The customers are instructed to press 1 to learn more about the refund or discount. They are then transferred to a live

person, who claims to be working for the utility and begins probing for personal information, which may include a zip code and the customer’s utility bill account number. The imposter eventually tries to have the customer provide bank account or other personal or financial information. “Divulging this level of information can lead to identity theft or customers having their bank accounts accessed,” National Grid says. The company says scammers have become increasingly sophisticated in replicating National Grid’s recorded messaging and directions for phone prompts, making it harder to differentiate an actual National Grid phone call from an imposter’s call. Similar scams have been reported across the U.S. by

other utilities, the company says. Customers who have been victimized by the scam should contact National Grid by using the toll-free telephone numbers listed on their billing statements, the company said. National Grid offers the following advice to customers to protect against such scams: • Never give out personal or financial information to someone you cannot identify. • Never provide your account information to any caller. National Grid representatives who call you will know your account number. • Verify that you are speaking with a National Grid representative by asking the caller to provide the last five digits of your National Grid account number. • If the caller does not know your account number, hang up the phone.

for this September. Given the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainties surrounding the restrictions, organizers felt it would be irresponsible to move forward with this international event, knowing full well, by the time the tournament came around,

there was a very distinct possibility that travel bans and restrictions on gathering size would still be in place. Ryan Powell of Rhino Lacrosse and Brian McFadden of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce are looking forward to the return of this great event in 2021.

SALAMANCA — Every student in the Salamanca City Central School District will continue to receive breakfast and lunch at no cost during the 2020-21 school year. Karen Magara, assistant superintendent for Finance and Operations, announced on Aug. 11 that the district was approved for the Community

Eligibility Provision (CEP) for four more years. Salamanca students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 have received free meals the last four years thanks to CEP. The district had previously provided free meals starting in 2014 through a different program. CEP is a nonpricing meal service option for schools

in low-income areas throughout the United States. Students and families are not required to apply to receive meals. “We are thankful to again be approved for CEP for another four years,” Magara said. “It is important that students eat at least two good meals a day, and many would go without if not for this program.” Students wishing for extra meals or a la carte items will be required to pay at the time of purchase.

What are some potential signs of ECM issues? The automotive service provider Aamco notes that a faulty or failing ECM will exhibit various symptoms. However, it’s important to note that these symptoms are not always indicative of issues with the ECM, so when they arise drivers may want to schedule appointments with their mechanics so the true culprit can be identified and the problem can be fixed. • Check engine light comes on: Many drivers have experienced the dreaded check engine light, which indicates some type of issue with the engine. That issue can be a failing engine component, or it may indicate a failing or bad ECM. Failing ECMs may lead to struggles starting the vehicle, and whenever drivers experience these issues, they should consult their mechanics immediately so the issue does not escalate to the point where the engine won’t start at all.
