Sanger said because we are living in an age of transition, experiencing a radical shift in our ways of learning and communicating, the group selected captures the diversity of the shared history in New York state and the nation. “The stories embodied in the museums’ collections and the storytelling talents of their interpretive staff are the heart of the project,” she added. In this two-year project, museums will identify a program to virtually deliver to their audiences, focusing
on developing programs from stories found in their collections that reveal cultural and racial diversity in their communities. Cardinal said both she and Jim Griffith, city historian and director of the historical society, are excited to learn about and use the new technologies and hardware provided through this grant to “present interesting and diverse stories of this region to a wider audience.” The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s approximately 120,000 libraries and 35,000 museums and related organizations. The agency’s mission is to inspire libraries and museums to advance
innovation, lifelong learning and cultural and civic engagement. Its grant making, policy development and research help libraries and museums deliver valuable services that make it possible for communities and individuals to thrive. The Museum Association of New York inspires, connects and strengthens New York’s cultural community statewide by advocating, educating, collaborating and supporting professional standards and organizational development. SALAMANCA — The Museum Association of New York (MANY) has announced that 98 museums from across New York state have been selected to participate in its “Building Capacity, Creating Sustainability, Growing Accessibility” project. Among the 98 museums selected are the Salamanca Rail Museum and Salamanca Area Historical Society. “We are delighted to be partnering with the Salamanca Historical Society on this project,” said Jaré Cardinal, director of the rail museum.” This Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) CARES Act grant project is designed to help museums impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to share their collections and reach audiences who cannot physically visit their museums. About 200 staff will be trained to use new hardware

SALAMANCA — Instructional Coach Aaron Straus from the Salamanca City Central School District was recently honored with the 2020 Outstanding Leader Award from the NYCATE Conference. The award program identifies educators from across the state who have had a great impact on their students in K-12 public schools where technology integration can be transformative. Straus was one of two educators in Western New York to accept the leadership branch of the award since its inception in 2012. “I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this accolade from NYSCATE,” said Straus. “It is a testament to our district’s philosophy that educational success
can be fully realized when technology-instruction is established, cultivated and maintained.” Each year, winners in Teaching, Superintendency & Leadership are determined based on an analysis of nomination packets submitted on behalf of the nominee by colleagues, supervisors and community members. “This year’s four exceptional educators have dedicated their lives to assure that their students are successful, both in and out of the classroom,” said Dr. Amy DelCorvo, Executive Director and CEO of NYSCATE. “Their innovative technology leadership and teaching style have created a solid learning environment that will guarantee a bright future for the state of New York and its next generation
of learners.” While serving in Salamanca, Straus led a task force to start the awardwinning virtual summer school program, “STEAM Camp.” He assisted with the design of Salamanca’s state-of-the-art STEAM center, modeled after a STEM manufacturing firm. Straus also wrote several large grants to purchase cutting-edge technology equipment for students and teachers to train on in their new STEM building. NYSCATE, is a non-profit, professional organization representing more than 25,000 technology using educators and administrators in New York State. CA BOCES hosts virtual scholastic challenge
OLEAN — Twenty-one teams from area school districts recently met virtually to participate in the Virtual Scholastic Challenge, annually hosted by Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES. The regional competition that tests students’ knowledge of academic trivia and current events is typically held as a face-toface tournament. For the second year, in response to COVID-19 regulations throughout the region, the competition was held virtually. Four teams scored the highest total points after three matches and made it to the finals: • Junior (grades 6-9) Finals: Ellicottville Central School (first place) and Whitesville Central School (second). • Senior (grades 9-12) Finals: Ellicottville (first place) and Fillmore Central School (second). Thirty-four matches took place over the course of the day, with nearly 2,600 questions read aloud. Teams, made up of three or four students each, mastered using an online buzzer system that created fast-paced and exciting matches. CLV Middle School announces honor rolls
Holiday Valley sets 2020-21 winter season opening Thursday
ELLICOTTVILLE — Thanks to Mother Nature’s cold temperatures and snowmaking technology, Holiday Valley Resort’s 2020-21 winter season will start Thursday morning. Holiday Valley president and general manager Dennis Eshbaugh announced this season’s opening on Monday, after three days of snowmaking at the Ellicottville resort. Plans are to open at least four slopes, with terrain available for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers and snowboarders, Eshbaugh said. There will also be a few terrain park features set up in the Rail Park. This most recent run of snowmaking has taken place since Saturday on over 12 of Holiday Valley’s 60 slopes, with up
to 245 snowguns running simultaneously, Eshbaugh said. The snowguns made more than 144-acre-feet of snow by 11 a.m. Monday. An acre-foot of snow equals one acre covered by a foot of snow. “In order to open the slopes, the newly made snow needs to cure for a period of time, then be spread over the slope by grooming machines to make a smooth skiing surface,” Eshbaugh said. Daytime beginner and private lessons will be available for skiers and snowboarders beginning Thursday. Hot beverages and a limited menu will be available in two lodges. The resort will be open for day skiing only on Thursday, then day and night skiing starting Friday.
“Holiday Valley is in compliance with New York State’s COVID restrictions on operating the ski terrain and indoor services,” Eshbaugh said. Masks are required at all times except when skiing down the slope or while seated to eat or drink. Reduced capacity in the lodges and eating areas, as well as spacing in the lift lines and on the chairlifts, will allow for proper social distancing. Advanced purchase of lift tickets online is encouraged, especially on holidays and busy weekends. Cleaning and sanitizing practices have been stepped up in the lodges, in the foodservice areas and in the restrooms. Guests are encouraged to limit their time spent indoors.

CCLAA holiday show to livestream this weekend
SALAMANCA — Not even the coronavirus pandemic could stop Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association members from helping the community ring in the holiday spirit. The theater organization that calls the Ray Evans Seneca Theater its home annually hosts a Christmas show for the community, and this year will be no different. Although lights have been dim at the theater due to the pandemic, and its limits on large gatherings, a group of performers have been working to pre-record and livestream a show that can be viewed on Facebook. The show, being directed by Dwain Graham, is coproduced and technicallydirected by Ryan Wheeler with Gretchen Henneman as the leading host. Performers range from Olean to Jamestown and will feature a variety of performances from
dancers and musicians with a couple of interviews with CCLAA and Olean Community Theater board members. Performers include Olean Community Theater President Tim Hollamby, Austin and Sarah Schapp, Aline Wintermantel, The OCTave’s Jazz Band led by Ruth Fuller, Colin Sullivan, Maddie McClelland, Jen Conklin, Mike Staley, Andrew Truman, Maria Wheeler, Olivia Obergfell, Brendan Miller, LeighAnne Shaffer, Emma Dwaileebe, Caroline Todd and Devyn Neiman with Janette McClure as special guest. “It’s been an interesting process. The work of Wheeler is truly a blessing,” said Graham. He said the performances were pre recorded, meaning not everyone was together at once, as is usually the case when rehearsing or performing. “We are fortunate to have so many performers willing to switch gears and innovate to get the job done,” he said.
“The CCLAA trusted us to do this correctly, and we are very grateful for them.” Graham said communication is key when operating during the pandemic to assure everyone is safe and the product is of expected quality. Those watching that “quality” production that features performers from throughout the area are encouraged to donate to the theater organization. Proceeds, the usual cost of admission to a production, will help the CCLAA to keep the theater going so it can bring live theater back to the stage once it is safe to do so. Funding is needed to maintain the theater, especially with things like carpets for the foyer, heating costs, the marquee, painting and more.
