Holiday Valley photo A new $4 million high-speed chairlift will be constructed at Holiday Valley next year to replace this current chairlift at Yodeler slope.

ELLICOTTVILLE — Holiday Valley Resort recently announced plans to construct a new chairlift in 2021.

The new lift is a state of the art high speed detachable quad chairlift that will replace the fixed grip Yodeler Quad, built in 2001. The new lift will be supplied by Doppelmayr USA, based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Including installation, the cost of the new Yodeler High Speed Quad is $4 million.

As compared to the existing lift, the chairs travel uphill at a much faster rate, but they detach from the cable and go slower for loading and unloading, making it much easier for skiers to get on and off the lift. Holiday Valley currently

has three other detachable chairlifts with Mardi Gras, Tannenbaum and Morning Star.

The existing lift will be in service for the upcoming 2020-21winter season but preliminary site work has already begun. The Holiday Valley Mountain Crew has cleared the alignment of the new lift and a profile is being conducted to calculate the placement and height of the towers in relation to the grade of the slope and engineering of the top and bottom terminals.

The bulk of the lift construction will take place during the summer of 2021 and it will be operating for the 2021-22 winter season.

The new lift will have a slightly modified alignment with the top of the lift moving

west. This change will allow a lower tower height at the unloading area and make it easier for skiers and snowboarders to navigate to the various slopes at the top. The new unloading area will actually be located where the Mountaintop Warming Hut is now, and that building will be moved east toward Yodeler slope.

“We have thought long and hard about scheduling this new lift,” said Dennis Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s President and General Manager.

“It gives our customers a great improvement to look forward to, but also reassures our staff that the current COVID situation will eventually be over and we need to keep looking to the future.”

Cattaraugus County Museum displays Eber Russell collection

MACHIAS — The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research library is pleased to announce the opening of its new display featuring several previously unexhibited artifacts from the Eber Russell collection of Native American artifacts.

Eber Russell was born in 1881 in Perrysburg, and by the age of 8 was already an enthusiastic collector of Native American artifacts.

Over the years, Russell’s collection grew to several thousand specimens — largely local in origin, but also coming from as far afield as California and the Pacific Northwest.

He became a recognized authority in this field, as well as Viking history, and spoke on the topic for many area audiences.

Late in life Russell became an adopted member of the Wolf Clan of the Seneca Nation.

In 1957, Russell sold a large portion of his collection to the Cattaraugus County Museum, at that time located in Little Valley, for the sum of $1,000.

While several items from the collection have been permanently on display since that time, many more have been in storage due to lack of display space as well

as imprecise identification of a multitude of stone tools and projectile points.

In 2014, a group of archeologists and archaeology students from the University of Buffalo, led by Dr. Douglas Perrelli, director of the Archeological Survey, identified and catalogued several hundred of these previously undisplayed artifacts.

Divers used at WVDP for inspection of storage tank WEST VALLEY — The Department of Energy and its cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley, LLC (CHBWV) recently conducted underwater cleaning and inspection of the site’s fire water storage tank at the West Valley Demonstration Project.

The 40-foot-tall tank has a capacity of more than 460,000 gallons of water as an emergency supply for fire suppression.

Trained divers also performed repair work, which is being done in accordance with National

Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements. These repairs will increase the life expectancy and viability of the tank for several years, at which time the tank will no longer be needed and will be demolished.

“Our team planned extensively for this underwater work, and conducted several confined space rescue training drills to ensure the safety of everyone involved,” said CHBWV Manager Pat Douglass, Balance of Site Program Support.

“Whenever you perform high-risk work evolutions,

extensive planning, lessons learned, and practice are keys to a safe and successful outcome.”

Before starting the initial inspection, crews worked together to layout emergency rescue protocols and how best to respond given the current conditions.

Divers from BIDCO Marine Group then entered the tank to conduct their initial inspection to obtain a reference on water clarity, debris build-up, and the best course of action prior to beginning the actual scope of work.

For example, vehicles may exhibit certain signs of that indicate their transmission fluid needs replenishing. In many of the following instances, drivers may only need to top off the transmission fluid in their vehicles. However, if issues persist, schedule an appointment with a mechanic. · Overheated transmission: Smoke billowing from a car is a sight no driver wants to see. But as bad as it may look, smoke coming from a car may only indicate the transmission is overheating due to lack of fluid. Smoke also can be indicative of a host of other problems, so if transmission fluid levels are not low, consult a mechanic. Loss of power and a burning smell also may indicate low transmission fluid levels. · Erratic shifting: Drivers can notice how their vehicles shift whether the cars or trucks have automatic or manual transmissions. Transmission fluid may be low if shifts appear to be delayed or faster than normal or if the vehicle appears to be slamming into a new gear. The automotive service provider Aamco notes that shifting issues related to transmission fluid may indicate the presence of a leak. If the issue disappears after refilling transmission fluid but then reappears shortly thereafter, consult a mechanic. · Pausing when engaging gears: A two- to three-second pause when shifting into drive and reverse is another indicator that transmission fluid levels are low. The automotive experts at Firestone note that manual transmissions require fluid to keep gears lubricated, while automatic transmissions rely on fluid to create the hydraulic pressure necessary to power movement within the transmission. When fluid levels are low, shifting from park to drive or reverse can take longer than it should. · Slipping transmission: Vehicles that are not staying in gear also may be in need of transmission fluid. However, a slipping transmission also may indicate significant damage to

the transmission has already occurred, so this issue should be brought to the attention of a mechanic.

Low transmission fluid levels can contribute to various symptoms. Keeping an eye on fluid levels and recognizing low fluid symptoms can keep cars running smoothly.
