ELLICOTTVILLE — The Ellicottville Historical Society will be holding four paranormal walks on each Friday night in October. Meet at the Ellicottville Gazebo at 7:30.

Walk begins at 8 p.m.

This weekly walk includes telling the haunted tales of Ellicottville, as well as stories from the results that have been found from past

walks.

Groups will also walk to the Jefferson Street Cemetery and visit a few graves there. Attendees should bring a flashlight or use a cellphone light when walking through the cemetery.

Walks are led by John Koerner, an author, professor, historian and founder of Paranormal Walks.

Boys soccer season opens with 2-1 start for ECS

ELLICOTTVILLE — After a 1-1 start over the weekend, the Ellicottville boys soccer team improved to 2-1 on Monday in its home opener.

The Eagles shutout visiting Gowanda/Pine Valley, 3-0.

After a Mitchell Azcarate goal put Ellicottville ahead 12 minutes into the game,

Logan Grinols scored two second-half goals.

Sam Edwards assisted Ellicottville’s first goal while Jamison Caldwell made two saves in goal for the Eagles.

Owen Ward made 11 saves for G/PV/SC, which opened 0-1.

In other season-opening boys soccer action: Portville 5, Randolph 0 RANDOLPH — Nate Petryszak collected a trio of goals to key Portville to its first win of the season on Monday.

Salamanca schools outfitted with temperature scanners

SALAMANCA — As a measure to protect students and staff in schools, the Salamanca City Central School District has implemented thermal temperature cameras at building entrances prior to the start of the school year.

The cameras quickly and accurately collect body temperature without human interaction and without disrupting traffic flow.

“People do not have to stop by the camera. It scans them as they pass by,” said Rob Miller, the district’s director of technology. “We have one at the main entrance of each building and

one for people entering the bus garage.”

If an individual’s temperature is not within normal range, an alarm will sound off. They then will get a second temperature scan by the school nurse to confirm the alert or refute it.

“This system and process is far superior to using the handheld devices that some schools are using because it’s so efficient and it gets students and staff in safely without the congestion and lines that you see with other processes,” said Bill Naab of Ink Labs, the Buffalo company that produces the thermal scanners.

problem is fading headlights. Fading headlights can pose a significant threat to drivers and their passengers as well as fellow motorists. According to the National Safety Council, drivers do only one-quarter of their driving at night.

Since drivers do most of their driving during the daytime, it’s easy to overlook headlight performance.

However, it’s important that drivers learn to recognize the signs that headlights need to be replaced.

•Dimming headlights do not necessarily require replacement. In some instances dimming headlights are a byproduct of a dirty car. The buildup of dirt and grime can reduce light output even when the headlights are otherwise fine. If your car is dirty, take it to the car wash and make sure the headlights are scrubbed clean of dirt and grime. Then drive at night to see if the light output of your headlights is still dim.

If so, the headlight bulbs may need to be replaced.

•Flickering headlights can indicate anything from worn out headlight bulbs to a weak car battery to loose connections. Flickering is one of the more dangerous headlight issues, as it can lead to headlights suddenly going dark while drivers are on the road at night. If headlights are flickering, take the car to a mechanic as soon as possible to have the issue resolved.

•When one headlight goes dark, chances are the other is not far behind. Automotive experts recommend replacing headlight bulbs in pairs, even if only one

bulb has gone dark, because this ensures equal light output.

Headlight maintenance tends to be overlooked. But recognizing the signs of fading headlights can help drivers avoid accidents and vastly improve the safety of nighttime driving.
