Photo Submitted: The Nelson M. Beard Memorial Scholarship has been established in the memory of a Salamanca educator who passed away unexpectedly in 2017. Beard is shown with his dog, Roy. SALAMANCA — Nelson Beard’s love for teaching took him across the globe — to South Korea and China to Hoke County, North Carolina — but he found a home as an educator in the Salamanca school district.

Beard, who passed away unexpectedly in 2017 at the age of 35, became a steady fixture in Salamanca in just three years as a member of the technology community, the building improvement teams and instructional teams of both elementary buildings, as well as the district’s professional development cabinet.

Beard energetically taught first-, secondand sixth-grade classes.

His dedication to the school community led

the Salamanca Board of Education to vote unanimously to grant him tenure posthumously.

Beard was a lifelong learner. A native of Youngstown in Niagara County, he graduated from Ithaca College with his bachelor’s degree in English before receiving his master’s in education from Niagara University.

His family, though, remembers him as a creative problem-solver who looked outside of the box for answers.

Beard’s creative and pragmatic approach to teaching is best remembered by his quote, “I choose to teach kids everything they need regardless of what it is,

when it is, or how often they need it.”

An annual $1,000 minimum scholarship award, the Beard scholarship will be for a student from the school district who is planning to attend a two- or four-year college or trade/technical school. Second preference will be for a student from any school in Cattaraugus County who is planning to attend a two- or four-year college or trade/technical school.

The student must be in good academic standing and should demonstrate a passion for their intended area of post-secondary study in their application goal statement. The award will also be for a student who demonstrates a need for financial support to attend college.

Outside of school, Beard loved cooking, fishing and the outdoors. He applied the same passion for teaching to his hobbies, working to perfect his meat-smoking techniques by building his own smoker. He especially loved his dog, Roy. CRCF’s executive director, Karen Niemic Buchheit, commended the Beard family’s tribute through this scholarship fund.

“Educators like Mr. Beard are pillars of the school community and the community as a whole,” Buchheit said. “People like Mr. Beard set an example that students aspire to.”

NYLE RR fall train rides begin Saturday in Gowanda

Deer falling prey to insect-borne hemorrhagic disease New York deer are being felled by an insect-borne disease and, as hunting season is underway, state wildlife officials are asking hunters to report instances in which they find the dead animals in the woods.

Biologists with the state Department of Environmental Conservation wildlife pathology lab have been getting reports of dead and sick deer this fall. They are collecting carcasses to confirm the presence of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD. The illness has already been confirmed in parts of Greene and Ulster as well as Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

So far DEC has received 750 reports of dead deer in those areas, although it may have spread elsewhere.

EHD was also spotted in Albany County more than a decade ago.

The illness isn’t transmittable to humans or

other animals, but hunters are nonetheless being urged to avoid handling or eating deer that may have been infected.

The EHD virus is carried by biting midges, small bugs often called no-see-ums.

Outbreaks usually start in late summer and early fall when the midges that carry the virus are abundant.

Once infected, deer usually die within 36 hours.

Symptoms include fever, hemorrhages in the muscles or organs, and swelling of the head, neck, tongue and lips. A deer infected with EHD may appear lame or dehydrated.

DHE is not to be confused with chronic wasting disease, a contagious neurological disease affecting deer, elk and moose. It causes a characteristic spongy degeneration of the brains of infected animals resulting in emaciation, abnormal behavior, loss of bodily functions and death.

EHD are often found near streams, ponds or other water sources due to the dehydration.

The disease has been endemic in Southern states for a number of years and research suggests that drought conditions can help it spread to the north.

“Recent research in fact has been tied to drought as an indicator and predictor of EHD outbreaks,” said Matt Ross, assistant conservation director for the Quality Deer Management Association, a group that works on deer conservation.

Archery season for deer and bear started Oct. 1 in the state’s Southern Zone.

Hunters or anyone else who believes they have encountered a deer felled

by EHD can contact the DEC at https://www.dec. ny.gov/about/558.html.

Despite the outbreak, DEC experts report the state’s deer population is robust overall.

GOWANDA — The train wheels are finally turning as the New York & Lake Erie railroad is kicking off a season of train rides with a special “Birthday Train” on Saturday.

Two train rides are scheduled to depart at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Gowanda, traveling to the village of South Dayton.

The NYLE station is located at 50 Commercial St., a quarter-mile east of Route 62 in Gowanda.

The scenic train ride will be an approximately 2½hour round trip including a layover at the village of South Dayton where passengers may de-board the train.

Following coronavirus safety guidelines, the railroad will provide sanitizer and face masks for those who do not bring their own.

Guests who have been exposed to COVID-19 or have symptoms such as a fever will not be permitted to ride. Those who have underlying health conditions or are concerned

about contracting the virus should not ride.

“Routine cleaning and disinfecting will be done frequently on all nonporous surfaces at the station and rail cars on a daily basis,” the railroad wrote on its website. “The rail cars will be cleaned before and after every trip.

This includes counters, benches, handrails, door handles, bathrooms or any surface that visitors/ passengers may have touched.”

Under the social distance plan, maximum seat capacity is reduced to 77 passengers. Reservations will be the primary ticket contact in order to not exceed capacity.

Passengers may purchase tickets by booking online at nylerailroad.com.

Passengers are asked to print off their tickets and bring the day of the trip.

For in-person purchases, the ticket window is located at the train station and will be open at 10 a.m. on the day of the trip.

Fares are $19 for adults,

$17 for senior citizens 63 and older and $15 for children ages 3 to 12.

Children 2 and younger may ride free.

• Nov. 28 and 29, “Santa Express Train,” four trips departing each day at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $19 for all riders. Children 2 and younger may ride free.

The week in high school sports

A quick rundown of the week in high school sports (from Monday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 10): Cattaraugus-Little Valley Boys soccer: see Salamanca Girls soccer: Started the season with losses for Franklinville (3-2 on Tuesday), Salamanca (4-3 on Thursday) and Pine Valley (2-0 on Saturday.

In those three games, Morganne Chapman scored two goals with one assist, Lexi Mikowicz had two assists and Madison Spink and Amelie Metzger each scored once. Goalkeeper Onalee Osgood made 20 total saves over the first two games.

Ellicottville Boys soccer: After starting the season 1-1 the previous weekend in the Gator Cup, Ellicottville continued at a .500 clip to 2-2-1. The Eagles defeated Pine Valley/Gowanda 3-0 on Monday, tied Randolph 1-1 on Wednesday and lost 1-0 to North Collins on Friday.

Logan Grinols had two goals and Sam Edwards marked a goal and an assist over those three games. At 1-01 in league play, the Eagles are second to Portville (2-0) in the CCAA East after the first week.

Girls soccer: Opened the season 3-0 with wins over Portville (2-0 on Tuesday),

Goalkeeper Jenna Hadley made 19 saves in the three wins, while Mandy Hurlburt scored four of her team’s first 10 goals, and also had an assist.

Franklinville Girls soccer: The Panthers won their first two games of 2020, defeating CLV 3-2 on Tuesday and Pine Valley 1-0 on Thursday, but fell to 2-1 with a 2-0 loss to Randolph on Saturday. Emily Bigler scored twice in the seasonopener and Kaylee Brennan had two assists, while Jordyn Harasta had the other goal. Brennan scored a goal of her own in the win over Pine Valley, assisted

by Bigler. Goalie Sarah Courtney had 27 saves over the three games, including 15 against Randolph.

Cross country (with Ellicottville): The Titans’ cross country teams both lost their opening race against AlleganyLimestone on Tuesday.

Tarryn Herman led the F/E girls with a fourth-place finish against A-L, with a 3.1-mile time of 23:44.

Second wave of coronavirus is hitting Cattaraugus County A second wave of coronavirus is hitting Cattaraugus County as an 11th COVID-19 death was recorded Friday and 11 new residents tested positive, pushing the total to 300.

“We are experiencing the second wave of COVID-19,” said Dr. Kevin D. Watkins, the county’s public health director. “The first wave was pretty mild. This is penetrating our community.

It seems there are a lot (of positives) in our healthcare community.”

Two school districts, Portville and Pioneer, were closed on Friday and held all remote learning due to positive tests for COVID-19.

Both are planning to reopen on Tuesday. A staff member at Portville tested positive and two at Pioneer.

On Sunday, Olean City School District shut down in-school learning Monday through Wednesday after an employee at Washington West Elementary and a high school student tested positive for COVID-19.

Classes in the district’s schools resumed for Thursday and Friday.

More than 60 healthcare workers in the county have tested positive for COVID-19, Watkins said.

It’s difficult to say why, he said — more than one-fifth of the cononavirus cases in the county have been among healthcare workers.

Weekly testing of healthcare workers in nursing homes and assisted living facilities has found most of the cases, with many of the workers being asymptomatic. Another one tested positive on Friday.

“We can’t pinpoint one thing or cluster” responsible for the recent rise in local COVID-19 positive tests, Watkins said. “It all goes to our going back to school, houses of worship and restaurants.”

In addition, there are more people congregating without masks or social distancing, Watkins said.

This is partly responsible for the increased cases in the county.

“We are going to have to double down and go back to doing things the way we were when this first came out in March and April,” he said.

“It’s really getting quite concerning,” Watkins said, noting there have been four deaths this week alone.

There were 18 positive COVID-19 tests reported on Thursday.

“It’s not easy to pinpoint a source,” he said. “They are scattered all over. It includes whole families.”

prevent the spread of the coronavirus by always wearing a mask in public, keeping a social distance and washing hands frequently.

Watkins said the 11th county resident to succumb to COVID-19 was a 71-yearold woman who experienced respiratory failure and was unable to overcome her illness despite aggressive treatment. He expressed condolences to her family.

The 11 positive COVID-19 tests received on Friday included six women and two men from the southeast part of the county, which includes the Olean area, a husband and wife from the northwest and one woman from the northeast.

Of the 11 individuals, five women were asymptomatic and three were symptomatic. Also, two of the men had symptoms and one was asymptomatic.

The department’s active positive COVID-19 caseload is now 66 as there are 223 residents who have recovered from COVID-19.

The department has begun a thorough contact tracing investigation for those individuals that they have been in contact with and the places that they have visited.

Any resident who experiences a fever, cough, shortness of breath or whole body aches should contact their health care provider.

Gowanda’s Historic Red Cross Hollywood Theater urges blood restored facade donation during turning heads Breast Cancer Awareness Month

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month this month, the American Red Cross urges eligible blood donors to provide hope and healing to patients fighting cancer by giving blood or platelets.

Those who come to give will receive a $5 Amazon. com gift card via email.

Donors will also have the chance to win a $1,000 Amazon gift card.

Donors are asked to make appointments by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling (800) 733-2767.

Cancer patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy may require red blood cell or platelet transfusions, the Red Cross says. In fact, patients fighting cancer need more blood than those with any other disease, using nearly one-quarter of the nation’s blood supply.

The Red Cross notes that it is testing blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. The test may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed COVID-19

symptoms.

Red Cross antibody tests will be helpful to identify individuals who have COVID-19 antibodies and may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. Convalescent plasma is a type of blood donation collected from COVID-19 survivors that have antibodies that may help patients who are actively fighting the virus.

COVID-19 antibody test results will be available within one to two weeks in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

GOWANDA — Gowanda’s Historic Hollywood Theater is shining in the autumn sunshine thanks to a recent facelift.

One the theaters’ most unique and recognizable features, a Tympanum of painted brickwork above a semi-circular arch with the name “HOLLYWOOD” on it that faces North Main Street.

These outstanding features rise above the marquee and easily distinguish the Hollywood as the centerpiece of the Gowanda Village Historic District, said Deb Harris of the Hollywood.

“With the Hollywood’s iconic marquee still removed for restoration, masons and restoration specialists working on lift equipment have been busy working on the upper facade of the theater,” Harris

said. “What they found were loose and chipped bricks, layers of peeling paint and cracked and broken wooden letters spelling out the name ‘Hollywood.’”

Masons removed, secured and pointed several rows of brickwork.

After removing layers of light blue paint, Brett Swiatek of Swiatek Studios, discovered that the original color of the masonry arch was a much deeper blue.

He scraped off the layers of faded paint and repainted the arch in the original shade of cobalt blue.

Harris said, “The original wooden letters were held together in brittle pieces and could no longer be restored.

Steve Swiat, of Northwood Restoration, fabricated replicas of the original letters out of medium density urethane. The letters were gilded in 22k gold leaf and installed.”

The restoration of the facade was made possible with funds from the State Office of Historic Preservation and a 2019 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

“Cars along Main Street have been going just a little bit slower as drivers take a peek at the facade improvements,” Harris said. “When the marquee is re-installed, the Hollywood should stop traffic all together.”
