Pay it Forward continued from 1 Tree of Hope program served 108 area families this year, including 277 children who received Christmas gifts of clothes and toys. He said the majority of the gifts and food boxes were picked up by individual families. Jackson said eight volunteers donated their time to collect the gifts under the Trees of Hope at area businesses and wrapped them. The Tree of Hope program serves the Salamanca area including Little Valley, Cattaraugus, Great Valley, Kill Buck, Sawmill, Bucktooth, Napoli, Randolph, Steamburg, Limestone, Carrollton and

Vandalia. Jackson said those dedicated people were Shannon Rockwell who coordinated the program and volunteers, Pam Sturdevant, Shirley Roszyk, Kylee Johnson, Janet Schmick, Mary Pierce, Beth Callahan and Salamanca Mayor Sandy Magiera who coordinated the phone calls. “The volunteers are just the facilitators,” he said. “They package the food, put it in boxes and collect all the presents from the trees located at local businesses that people buy and bring back to the sponsors. Then, they wrap the gifts that are taken to the homes of the participants by members of the fire company, police department, Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves.” The group was assisted by firefighters from Limestone, Humphrey,

In addition to food and gifts, the program also provides people in need with important items including clothes, boots and shoes, bedding, beds and dressers. The current Tree of Hope program started 11 years ago as Secret Santa with Jackson and Mike “Smitty” Smith when radio station WGWE was launched. Jackson said most everyone knows of a family that’s down on their luck

Olean Chamber’s Lunch and Learn set for Jan. 11 OLEAN — The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its next Lunch and Learn for noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 11, with a representative from the state Department of Labor Safety and Health discussing the department’s OnSite Consultation Program. “This free, government program helps a wide variety of small businesses from construction, manufacturing, retail, to dentists, hair salons and veterinarians

Shop with a Cop provides Christmas gifts for local families BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY ALLEGANY — Each year, law enforcement officers from Salamanca, the Seneca Nation and Cattaraugus County escort a number of children through the aisles of Walmart with a mission of finding the perfect gifts for the kids’ families. This Christmas, the annual Shop with a Cop program will support nine children and their families in the Salamanca area. Since 2015, the Salamanca police, Seneca Marshals and county sheriff’s deputies have participated in Shop with a Cop in coordination with the Salamanca Youth Bureau. Now in its sixth year after skipping 2020 due to COVID-19, the program has raised about $7,500. “Both the police department and the youth bureau receive donations and use those toward this event,” said Sandi Brundage, youth bureau director. Brundage said four kids participated in the program’s first year, and that number has continued to

grow each year since. “We always have a poster up at the youth center that we update every year, and so the kids are very excited — and I’m very excited — that we can do it this year,” she said. “The poster creates a lot of buzz and a lot of questions every year. If feels wonderful.” On Dec. 23, officers team up with a child or two and a shopping cart and make their way around the store, looking for the perfect gifts for siblings, parents and other family members. They could be spotted in the toy section, sporting goods, electronics, home goods and more. Salamanca Police Officer Matt Smith has participated in the event every year and helps coordinate it. He said as it grows bigger each year, more people in the community know about it and send in more donations, which in turn allows them to support more kids. “It was tough last year with COVID. Now we have to wear a mask, but at least we can do it this year,” he

added. “It’s nice that the kids can see us in this light as everyday people and help them out.” Officer Adam Johnson, also with Salamanca, agreed with Smith about having the kids see them in a better light. He said it’s good for the kids to know they aren’t always the bad guy and are there to help. “It’s a different experience every year, especially with the kids,” he said. “This year we have Josiah who’s getting a case of pop for his dad. Everyone has a different experience.” Johnson has participated in the event several times, previously with the Marshals and now with the Salamanca police. He said it was disappointing not being able to do the event in 2020 but they’re happy they are back and following the guidelines to help keep people safe. “It’s a lot of fun and something I look forward to,” he added. “I enjoy doing it so I make sure to volunteer every year.” Brundage also said the

Seneca Nation to receive $422K for victim services program The Department of Justice announced it has awarded more than $17.5 million in grants to support the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program. Funding will support efforts across the country to address violent crime, including the gun violence that is often at its core. Among the recipients is the Seneca Nation, which has been awarded $422,695 to provide culturally appropriate victim services. local PSN projects that work in partnership with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices. The City of Jamestown has also been awarded $18,150 to purchase portable radios for the Jamestown Police Department. Grant funds will support the Crime Analysis Centers in Erie, Niagara and Monroe Counties. The funding will be used to support crime analysts who will focus on efforts to identify and reduce violent disputes. Other organizations in the Western District of New York awarded funds are: The International

Institute of Buffalo awarded $2,015,000 to combat human trafficking through collaboration between law enforcement and service providers, to provide housing assistance grants to victims of human trafficking, and to provide services for youth victims of labor trafficking. Compeer West, Inc., awarded $1,200,000 to support expansion of its multistate mentoring program. The City of Niagara Falls awarded $40,648 and the City of Buffalo has been awarded $257,047 to support criminal justice initiatives.

The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, Inc., awarded $800,000 to provide legal services to victims of human trafficking. The Office of Justice Programs provides federal leadership, grants, training, technical assistance and other resources to improve the nation’s capacity to prevent and reduce crime, advance racial equity in the administration of justice, assist victims and enhance the rule of law. AUTO CORNER 4 factors to consider to maintain winter safety

Many changes are to be expected as fall gives way to winter. Temperatures drop for much of the country, and depending on where one lives, snow, wind and ice are to be expected. As beautiful as snow-covered landscapes can be, winter presents unique hazards, notably slippery roads and surfaces. Chilly temperatures also can put people at risk if they spend prolonged periods outdoors unprotected. According to the insurance company Carsurance, more than 156,000 crashes occur annually due to icy roads. Roughly 17 percent of all vehicle crashes happen in winter conditions. Winter hazards are not exclusive to driving, however. That means winter safety involves a consideration of a host of factors. 1. Changing visibility While slippery surfaces may contribute to some accidents, visibility can quickly change with winter weather. Blowing snow can contribute to whiteout conditions. In addition, fog can be hazardous to drivers, aviators and mariners and contributes to thousands of travel accidents every year, advises the National Weather Service. It’s important to slow down, leave plenty of distance, use your low-beam headlights, and recognize when it may be safest to pull over, such as when visibility is significantly compromised.

2. Snow removal Shoveling snow or using a snowblower are common wintertime activities. Yet strenuous levels of activity in cold temperatures could put people at risk of heart attack, particularly if they are not acclimated to physical activity. Always warm up prior to shoveling snow to prepare the body for exercise. Go slowly and take frequent breaks. Avoid twisting and tossing snow over your shoulder, which can contribute to back injuries. 3. Carbon monoxide poisoning Winter weather means turning up the heat or doing more indoor cooking. Carbon monoxide is produced through the burning of fuel in various forms, including stoves, engines, gas ranges, portable generators, and grills. The National Safety Council says carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can go undetected as it builds up in enclosed spaces. Never warm up the car inside of a contained garage. Do not use portable flameless chemical heaters indoors, and have furnaces, water heaters and other fuel-burning appliances checked and serviced by a qualified technician annually. Be sure that carbon monoxide alarms are on every floor of the home, and take it seriously if the alarm goes off. 4. Black ice Black ice is a common winter foe. Black ice forms when temperatures

rise above freezing during the day, melting any snow on the ground and causing surfaces to become wet. If the temperature drops once more while the ground is wet, a thin, transparent sheet of ice can form. Black ice also may occur if moisture in the air condenses and forms dew or fog, and then the temperature drops below freezing, says the National Weather Service. Black ice gets its name because it looks black on asphalt roads. However, it also can form on sidewalks and overpasses, or spots shaded by trees or other objects. Slowing down and exercising extreme caution are essential.
