For scallops: 12 large sea scallops, rinsed and patted dry 12 slices smoked bacon For green rice: 1⁄2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, tightly packed 1 cup fresh stemmed spinach leaves, tightly packed 1 1⁄3 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1 1⁄3 cups milk 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1 tablespoon olive oil 3 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 1⁄2 cups long-grain rice 1⁄4 cup finely minced onion 1 clove of garlic, peeled and minced 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a small bowl, combine all the ingredients for the seasoning, mixing well. 3. Sprinkle each dried scallop with seasoning; set aside. 4. Arrange bacon strips on prepared baking sheet, bake for about 10 minutes, or until just beginning to brown and some of the grease is rendered. Bacon should still be soft and very pliable. Remove bacon from baking sheet and drain on paper towels to remove excess grease. Let cool for several minutes. 5. Wrap each scallop with one piece of bacon,

securing it through the center with a bamboo skewer. Place on clean baking sheet. Bake until bacon is crisp and scallops are opaque, or about 8 to 10 minutes, turning once. Serve on a bed of green rice and garnish with fresh thyme. For green rice: 1. Place cilantro, spinach, and broth in a blender and pulse until the vegetables are puréed. Add the milk and salt and blend until well combined. 2. In a medium, heavybottomed saucepan set over medium heat, heat the olive oil and butter. When the butter is melted, add the rice and sauté, stirring about every 30 seconds, until it just begins to brown, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the onion and garlic and cook 1 minute longer, stirring constantly. Add the contents of the blender, stir well, turn the heat to high, and bring to a boil. Cover the pan, turn the heat to the lowest setting, and cook for 20 minutes. Stir the rice gently, cover, and cook another 5 minutes. 3. Remove pan from heat source and let the rice steam in the covered pot for 10 minutes. Serve hot.

Pumpkinville honored as historic business with NYS designation to receive this recognition. When Borrello notified them about it and asked for some background on the business, she said the family began to go through their old files and photographs.

BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY GREAT VALLEY — What began as a small, roadside pumpkin stand in 1968 has grown into an annual fall tradition for generations of families, and New York State officials have taken notice.

“It was so cool to dig through all that history,” she said. “It’s eye-opening to see how much we’ve grown.”

Pumpkinville was officially designated a Historic Business by the state and added to the Historic Business Preservation Registry. State Senator George Borrello visited the family-owned farm Oct. 26 to present the designation to owners Diane and Dan Pawlowski.

Established through legislation enacted in 2020, the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry recognizes businesses that have operated for at least 50 years and made significant contributions to the history and character of their communities. Borrello said the registry not only honors the selected businesses but includes them in a program that aims to grow and expand them and make them more resilient.

“We’re incredibly proud of our little corner of Great Valley, and so grateful to everyone who has been part of Pumpkinville’s story over the years,” the Pawlowski family shared. “From the families who visit year after year to the wonderful employees who make it all happen, thank you for being part of our history.” Borrello nominated Pumpkinville for the designation in recognition of its nearly six decades of service to Western New York families and its longstanding contributions to the region’s agricultural and tourism heritage. “Ninety percent of businesses don’t make it five years. To make it 50

and Helen Halloran. Today, the Pawlowski family operates the 225-acre farm with three generations involved in the business. Dan Pawlowski, who is 28 years from 100, as he likes to say, said that even

though they’re open for only about 50 days during the late summer and early fall, running and managing the farm is basically a yearround job. He said the family and staff start preparing the property itself at the beginning of summer, but

after the final day of the season on Halloween, the entire farm is cleaned up and ready for winter by Veterans Day. Dan and Dianne’s daughter Lisa Pawlowski said the family is honored

“New York state can be a tough place to do business for a number of reasons,” the senator added, “so I’m always appreciative when we as a state government does something that actually helps advance business.” Voted Buffalo’s Best Pumpkin Patch by the people of Western New York, Pumpkinville closed its 58th fall season on Halloween. Seneca Nation opens skateparks in Salamanca, Irving

Two new and exciting skateparks officially opened Oct. at both the Allegany and Cattaraugus Territories of the Seneca Nation. Shown at the ribbon cutting ceremony in Salamanca at James J. Crowley Park are (from left) Courtney John-Jemison, deputy director Seneca Nation CPDD; Councilman Mike Reed, City of Salamanca Ward 4; Mayor Sandy Magiera; Seneca Nation Councilor Tina Abrams; Dr. Donielle Lovell, director Seneca Nation CPDD; Bethany Johnson, executive assistant to J.C. Seneca, president of the Seneca Nation; Josh Auman, DPW supervisor for the city; and Sarah Williams, community engag24ement coordinator Seneca Nation CPDD.

A number of local kids on bikes, skateboards and scooters took on the challenges of the skatepark in Salamanca after the official ribbon cutting ceremony. Six-year-old Loegynn Kalani of Salamanca, a junior professional snowboarder, chose to ride the concrete on her scooter.

BY DEB EVERTS SALAMANCA — The Seneca Nation officially opened two new skateparks on Oct. 24 with ribbon cutting ceremonies at both the Allegany and Cattaraugus territories. One opened in Salamanca at Crowley Park and a second, identical skatepark in front of the Cattaraugus Community Center in Irving. The event to mark the completion of The Skatepark Project was attended by Nation and City of Salamanca officials including Courtney JohnJemison, deputy director Seneca Nation Community Planning and Development Department (CPDD); Councilman Mike Reed, City of Salamanca Ward 4; Salamanca Mayor Sandy Magiera; Seneca Nation Councilor Tina Abrams; Dr. Donielle Lovell, director Seneca Nation CPDD; Bethany Johnson, executive assistant to J.C. Seneca, president of the Seneca Nation; Josh Auman, DPW supervisor for the city; and Sarah Williams, community

engagement coordinator Seneca Nation CPDD; as well as community members. “Today is a celebration of what we can accomplish when departments, partners and community members come together with a shared vision,” John-Jemison said. “Most importably, it’s a celebration of our young people and our commitment to creating spaces where they can grow, connect and thrive.” The skateparks were designed and constructed by Grindline Skateparks, based in Seattle. Landscaping at both sites was done by Joey K’s Landscaping of Irving. Work began on the skatepark project right after the groundbreaking in December 2025 and construction continued through February 2026. John-Jemison said Grindline has built a number of skateparks in the area including those in Springville, Ellicottville, the Town of Allegany and Jamestown. She said the skateparks are safe for not

only skateboards, but also for scooters, bikes and wheelchairs. They are both ADA compliant.

THE NEW concrete skateparks are the result of two distinct grant awards from the Built to Play Skatepark Grant fund. Secured by the Seneca Nation Department of Transportation in cooperation with the Nation’s CPDD, the awards provided for permanent concrete skateparks on both the Allegany and Cattaraugus territories.

grant that addressed rural communities,” she said. “We want to thank TSP and Trevor Staples, Built to Play Skatepark manager, whose funding guidance and leadership made this project possible.” Dr. Lovell said the Seneca Nation received full funding for the Cattaraugus skatepark but they didn’t receive complete funding for the Allegany skatepark, so they did some fundraising.

According to JohnJemison, the CPDD applied for funding back in 2021 for a skatepark in the Allegany Territory through The Skatepark Project (TSP), formerly known as the Tony Hawk Foundation.

“I want to recognize the Ray Evans Foundation of Western New York that helped make this skatepark possible, and I want to say thank you to every person that put money in the jugs and jars at businesses around town for years,” she said. “We also want to give a really big thank you to the Seneca Nation leadership, tribal council and executives who provided a huge part of that match to make this possible.”

“Additionally, during a site visit, the project manager for TSP was amazed to see we had two territories with a large youth population and we were awarded funding to place a skatepark on our Cattaraugus Territory through a separate TSP

Dr. Lovell said the community started talking about a skatepark years ago. She said it’s been something the kids have always brought up whenever they’ve written letters to the council, met with executives or talked with their teachers.

“It’s always been a dream for us to be able to do (that),” she said. John-Jemison said former Tribal Councilor Billy Canella had the idea for a skatepark on the Allegany Territory in 2021. She said CPDD was pleased to collaborate with the Seneca Department of Transportation and City of Salamanca for the Allegany park and the Cattaraugus Community Center for their park. “We hope to work more in the future with the city, like we did with the dog park, and now we have the skatepark,” Abrams said. “I want to thank everybody, especially our staff here, Courtney and Donielle, who were the driving force behind getting this done.”

FROM THE city’s perspective, Magiera said a new skatepark has been needed for years and it will keep youth from riding skateboards unsafely in the street. “I hope this one is used well and the kids enjoy it for a long time,” she said. “I look forward to doing more projects with the Seneca

Nation.” “Today is more than about opening the skatepark; it’s about investing in our community, creating opportunities for our youth and providing a place for people of all ages to come together, stay active, learn new skills and build connections with one another,” Johnson said. On behalf of the Seneca Nation’s president’s office and leadership, Johnson said these projects are the result of the hard work and dedication of the local skaters, bikers, community stakeholders and The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. “It’s been a journey but a pleasure to offer this to the youth in our communities,” John-Jemison said. “Outdoor recreation has really taken off since the pandemic, coupled with being able to offer more chances for people to stay active for their physical and mental health is an added bonus. We hope the communities love them as much as we do, so skate, bike, wheel and have fun.” For more information about The Skatepark Project, visit online at skatepark.org.

The impact of Movember on men’s health Who would have thought an informal idea between two friends enjoying a drink in a pub in Melbourne, Australia, back in 2003 would transform into a global health phenomenon? Movember, an event born of blending the words “mustache” and “November” together, is the brainchild of Travis Garone and Luke Slattery and encourages men to grow out their facial hair for thirty days. Fondly referred to as “Mo Bros,” the men

who participate in Movember help to spread awareness about the silent crises surrounding men’s physical and mental health in a lighthearted way, according to Texas Health Resources. Since its inception, the Movember Foundation has moved beyond the original 30 Mo’s Bros to cover 20 countries, mobilizing more than six million participants and funding upwards of 1,250 health projects

Simple ways to build your savings each day It might surprise some young adults to learn that savings accounts once yielded substantial interest earnings. But since the recession of 2008, interest rates on savings have remained well below 1 percent. By comparison, Bankrate notes that savings account interest rates hovered around 5 percent in 1980. The low interest rates on savings may help to explain why fewer adults seem to be emphasizing building their savings. The United States Bureau of Economic Analysis defines the personal saving rate as the percentage of disposable income that people save. While the 30-year average personal save rate is 5.7 percent, in April 2026 the rate was 2.6 percent, or less than half the 30-year

average. Inflation has made it harder for people to save, but there’s still value in saving disposable income even if it won’t yield much in interest. Savings accounts can help people navigate emergencies like job loss or costly vehicle repairs. Savings also can be used to finance home renovations, saving homeowners money on interest charges associated with loans or second mortgages. Indeed, there’s much to gain from building savings, and people can accomplish that goal in various ways. • Establish automatic deposits on payday. Many adults now receive their paychecks via direct deposit into their checking accounts. Those deposits are automatic and require little of account holders beyond the initial enrollment. The same hands-off approach can be applied to depositing money into a personal savings account. Account holders need only set up automatic transfers on paydays so a portion of

their weekly or biweekly paycheck is deposited directly into a savings account on payday. The automatic transfers ensure some disposable income is routinely set aside for savings and therefore not at risk of being spent on

impulse buys or other less important expenditures. • Include saving in your monthly financial budget. Financial advisors strongly advise adults to prepare monthly budgets. A budget makes it easier to accomplish short- and long-term financial goals

and decreases the chances disposable income will be spent impulsively. When tailoring a monthly budget, be sure to include money set aside for savings among the weekly and monthly expenditures. Include savings deposits among other monthly

expenditures like mortgage payments, car payments and utility bills. • Adjust your spending habits. The “couch economy” is a term used within the financial sector that refers to the increase in people shopping more and more from home. A recent study from Visa, Inc., found that online and in-app payments expanded in every market studied between 2019 and 2026. Simply put, it’s never been easier for people to spend their money, and that convenience could be coming at the cost of savings. Adults looking to build their savings can make a concerted effort to adjust their spending habits so they’re in better position to save. When faced with the temptation to pay for streaming content or order meals via delivery services or scroll through shopping apps on a smartphone, adults can pause and ask if such expenses are truly necessary. Resolving to wait five minutes before making a purchase might afford consumers time to recognize when they’re buying out of necessity and when they’re spending impulsively or out of pure convenience. This small adjustment might be enough to reduce frivolous spending and increase savings. There’s no denying adults are saving less money than people did years ago. While it’s easier than ever to spend, some simple tweaks can help people rebuild their savings and reap the rewards that such discipline can offer.
