3 area high school grads receive new CRCF scholarships Three high school graduates from Cattaraugus County recently received scholarship awards being made for the first time from newly established scholarship funds, managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community.

Gabriel Snyder, of Ellicottville Central School, and West Valley Academy and Central School’s Chloe Chai received the Elisa B. Hughey Memorial Scholarship for the Arts for $1,000 each.

This scholarship was established in 2016 by the friends and family of Elisa B. Hughey, a deep lover of the arts and education, after she lost a long battle with cancer. In 2019, the Hughey Scholarship Committee moved the fund under the management of CRCF. This fund provides two annual scholarships, one each for Ellicottville and West Valley Central high schools, for college-bound students committed to advancing their skills in any

aspect of the fine arts including sculpture, painting, drawing, watercolor, graphics, animation, architecture/design and photography.

Snyder will study Theatre at Sarah Lawrence College. Chai will attend Denison University to study studio art.

Snyder also received the inaugural Ginger D. Schroder Legislative District 3 Scholarship for $500.

Ginger D. Schroder, of Farmersville, established this scholarship through her legislative salary after being elected to the Cattaraugus County Legislature. The Ginger D. Schroder Legislative District 3 Scholarship is given to a graduating high school student residing in Cattaraugus County Legislative District 3, which covers the towns of Ellicottville, Farmersville, Franklinville, Lyndon, Machias and Mansfield, who will pursue a trade degree or 2- or 4-year college

degree.

Madison Braker, of Salamanca Central School, received the first-ever Nelson M. Beard Memorial Scholarship for $1,000.

Established and named in memory of the former Salamanca educator and dedicated member of the school community, this scholarship is for a student from the Salamanca City Central School District who is planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or technical/ trade school, with second preference going to a student from any school in Cattaraugus County planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or trade/technical school.

Braker will major in sociology and minor in psychology at St. Bonaventure University.

Amore named CEO, director of Head Start Cattaraugus & Wyoming Counties Project Head Start has named Danielle Amore as the new CEO – Head Start Director.

Amore has more than a decade of experience with Head Start programs in multiple counties in Western New York including several years as a Teacher and Site/Center Director with Cattaraugus & Wyoming Counties Project Head Start at its Salamanca Center where she began her professional career in 2010.

“This is an exciting time.

It’s great to be back where I started many years ago,” Amore said. “I welcome the opportunity to work with some amazing people and face the challenges ahead including a return to normal with the Statewide Health Emergency now lifted, and see lots of happy faces on children this fall.”

Amore has provided professional development training at local, state and national levels and has worked at Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc., the Salamanca Youth Bureau and ACCORD as Director of Curriculum as well as working with local schools’ Committee on Preschool Special Education and afterschool programming.

Andrea Aldinger, Head

Start board chair, said they are pleased to welcome Amore back to the family of Head Start after an extensive search. Aldinger said they are confident the program will maintain its high quality comprehensive preschool programming and community partnerships.

At the time of her appointment, Amore was an English as a Second Language teacher with VIPKid, working with children ages 3-16 and families in China all done in a virtual setting.

“There is no doubt that Dani is dedicated to working with all of the Head Start community to have a positive impact on children and families,” said Ira Katzenstein, outgoing CEO – Head Start Director. “She gets it.”

Amore grew up in Franklinville and graduated from Ten Broeck Academy. She completed her undergraduate degree at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelors in Health & Physical Education. She also obtained a Masters of Human Resource Management with a specialization in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University-Global Campus.

CATTARAUGUS — Three recent Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School graduates received scholarship awards from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Lexi Mikowicz and Haley Dorman received the May C. Carroll Scholarship for $1,450 each.

The May C. Carroll Scholarship is given to a graduating senior who is a resident of Cattaraugus. Recipients must demonstrate academic promise and be active in extracurricular activities and community service. The scholarship was established at CRCF through the May C. Carroll Trust.

Mikowicz plans to double major in environmental science and biology and minor in Spanish at Lander University. Dorman will attend Le Moyne College to study human resource

Are backyard chickens right for you?

Raising backyard chickens has been a growing phenomenon for several years.

Many cities have passed laws legalizing backyard chickens, encouraging many to raise chickens as a rewarding hobby.

One of the biggest benefits to raising backyard chickens is that their eggs are fresher and often tastier than store-bought varieties. Hens can lay one egg per day. Multiply that egg per hen, and breakfast is always available.

Another benefit to chickens is they produce a

natural fertilizer that can be used in gardens. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says chicken manure can be composted, aged and eventually added to the garden.

In about six months, a person will accumulate about one cubic foot of manure per chicken. Egg shells and other compostable material can be added to create an even richer formula.

Despite being seemingly independent birds, chickens need people to be active caregivers. They require feed and water daily. The chickens will need a caregiver while you vacation.

People who are frequently away from home should reconsider chickens.

Chickens also are prone to worms, parasites and lice. They need to have rear feathers trimmed to stay clean and sanitary, and they will require an area where they can “dust” and self-groom. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises not to cuddle and kiss chickens like pets because they can carry salmonella. Not every

coop is completely varmintproof, and some chickens may succumb to predators.

Squeamish or sentimental folks may find chickens aren’t the right fit.

Chickens require commitment and care that many people can provide.

DEC Buys Land continued from 1 Management Area (WMA) in the towns of Ellicottville and Mansfield in Cattaraugus County and the Genesee River WMA in the Allegany County town of Willing.

The parcels in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties will preserve natural habitats essential for wildlife populations and provide new wildlife-related public recreation opportunities such as fishing, hunting, trapping, and wildlife viewing.

“Preserving and protecting our natural resource gems is not only crucial to the future of our planet, it’s a boost to tourism, jobs and our local economy,” Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said of the new Southern Tier WMAs. “The Genesee River and Poverty Hill Wildlife Management Areas will preserve natural wildlife areas and provide yet another recreational opportunity for Western New Yorkers to explore the great outdoors.”

Poverty Hill WMA is located in the towns of Mansfield and Ellicottville in Cattaraugus County.

The broad, 950-acre landscape contains mature forest, wetlands, brushlands and open fields. Poverty Hill WMA is accessible from the north side of Cattaraugus County Route

13 and Poverty Hill Road, south of Hinman Hollow Road.

DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos thanked the landowners who partnered with DEC “to protect these lands for the public’s benefit” and welcomed everyone “to explore and appreciate the new Genesee River and Poverty Hill WMAs.” Seggos said, “DEC is committed to enhancing fish and wildlife habitat and providing quality access for wildlife recreation across New York State and these two wildlife management areas are great additions to state lands in Western New York.”

Seggos said both WMAs will support a significant variety of wildlife species including wild turkey, ruffed grouse, woodcock, white-tailed deer, black bear, beaver, muskrat, raccoon, fisher, red and gray fox, wood ducks and mallards.

Both areas will also protect natural habitats that provide critical resting and feeding areas for migratory waterfowl and songbirds, and other wildlife including rare, threatened or endangered species.

DEC purchased the properties for $2.12 million using federal funding from the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Program and the State’s Environmental Protection Fund. The state will actively manage the two WMAs to provide and protect quality wildlife habitat, foster wildlife reproduction and survival and promote wildlife-dependent public recreation.

In addition, non-wildlife-dependent recreational activities such as hiking, cross-country skiing, kayaking and canoeing will be permitted provided these activities do not impede or interfere with the primary wildlife management and public use goals of the area.

DEC expects to complete construction of parking areas for both WMAs this year. Before visiting Genesee River or Poverty Hill WMAs, visit DEC’s website for a list of permitted activities, maps and other site information.

WMAs are lands owned

by New York State under the control and management of DEC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife. These lands are acquired primarily for wildlife reproduction and survival, as well as to provide wildlife-based recreational opportunities.

WMAs provide exceptional areas for the public to interact with a wide variety of wildlife species. There are 125 WMAs across the state, comprising approximately 245,000 acres.

Genesee River and Poverty Hill WMAs will be maintained with federal funding from the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration program, set up by the Pittman-Robertson Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937, which apportions revenues generated from the excise taxes on the sale of firearms, ammunition and archery equipment to state wildlife agencies for conservation efforts and hunter education programs.

Though hundreds of millions of adults and adolescents have now been vaccinated against COVID-19, there figures to be some lingering effects of the pandemic during the upcoming school year. That could affect which school supplies families buy in the weeks to come. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends.

• A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five

years. It’s likely that school shoppers will turn to the internet for their supplies, which means local brick and mortar shops should increase their web presence and digital shopping capabilities to reach online shoppers. This includes omnichannel fulfillment, such as buy online and pickup in store (BOPIS) options.

• Reassessment of what’s essential: The pandemic may have changed which items consumers consider essential. For example, clothing became less significant as a greater number of students were enrolled in virtual learning. Backto-school shoppers may purchase less clothing and focus more on tech items, among others.

• Traditional supplies become less necessary: In 2020, Deloitte forecasted that a shift in preferences and intentions would result in parents buying fewer traditional supplies, such as notebooks and office

supplies, as they chose to invest in digital resources to supplement children’s education. That shift likely will continue into this school year.

• Support for local retailers: Community spirit grew in the early days of the pandemic and continues now.

Many people prefer to shop in locally owned stores.

Eighty percent of customers surveyed feel more or as connected to their communities, according to the business industry consultant company Accenture.

• Customers are trying new brands and products: Shoppers are trying new products out of curiosity as well as necessity.

Back-to-school shopping may include novel brands and other items that may not have been readily purchased in years past.
