How to combat glare when driving at night Driving at night differs from driving during the day for a number of reasons. Reduced visibility, which can be exacerbated by rain or other inclement weather, requires being extra diligent when scanning the roadways for potential hazards. The blinding glare from oncoming headlights, signage and street lights also can make driving at night challenging or downright uncomfortable. Drivers frustrated by bright headlights while driving at night can rest assured that they’re not alone. New data from a recent study from AAA revealed six in 10 drivers struggle with headlight glare, and nearly three-quarters of those said it has gotten worse over the last decade. Ninety-two percent of drivers said oncoming headlights, particularly on two-lane roads, cause the most issues. AAA spokesperson Mark Schieldrop said the problem stems from new headlight technologies and taller vehicle design. So what can drivers do to mitigate glare when driving at night? That can be accomplished through various strategies. • Clean glass and mirrors. Dust, oily films, streaks, and other debris on reflective surfaces scatter light. This
magnifies the “starburst” effect of headlights. Cleaning mirrors and the windshield thoroughly can remove buildup. If the problem is caused by pitted glass, which occurs when sand and debris create tiny pits in exterior glass over time, a professional polishing or replacement of the windshield may be necessary, according to Auto Glass Kings. • Adjust the mirrors. Many rearview mirrors have a flip tab or an auto-dimming feature that is reserved for nighttime driving. Drivers also can angle side mirrors to minimize the reflection of lights from cars in the rear. • Look to the right. Adjusting nighttime driving habits may help with glare. When an oncoming vehicle approaches, do not look directly at the headlights but
gaze toward the white line on the right side of the road. • Dim the dash. Interior lighting can compete with the dark road outside. Turn down the brightness of the instrument panel and any infotainment screens to help your eyes remain dilated for the dark conditions. • Get anti-reflective coatings. Sometimes problems may stem from vision issues. Cataracts or dry eyes can worsen sensitivity to light, according to Johnson Laser Eye. Regular eye exams can help people recognize problems and come up with solutions, such as anti-reflective coatings on eyeglasses. Nighttime yellowtinted lenses also may help. Various strategies can help drivers combat glare and thus feel safer when behind the wheel at night.

Randolph’s Arts and Crafts Festival is Saturday BY DEB EVERTS
RANDOLPH — Historic Main Street will be brimming with activity Saturday as festival-goers y come from far and wide o to enjoy Randolph’s 52nd annual Arts & Crafts Festival. The free, one-day event will offer entertainment for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., - rain or shine. Presented by the Randolph Area Community Development s Corporation (RACDC), the event will feature approximately 100 crafters and artisans from across the region. These talented people offer handmade wares ranging from artwork, handcrafted birdhouses, jewelry, baked goods, jellies and jams to wreaths, soaps, candles and primitive country décor. In addition to returning food vendors, there will also be some new food vendors on-site. They all will offer a tasty selection of festival favorites, including fresh-squeezed lemonade, fried dough and sugar waffles, taffy, steak sandwiches, curly fries, Italian sausage, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and more. The day will be filled with music and lively entertainment. Families are invited to participate in the new, one-hour Street
Dance Party at 12:30 p.m. DJ Dior will provide classic hits throughout the day. Since the town of Randolph is celebrating its 200th anniversary this summer, Aug. 1416, bicentennial-specific activities and historical exhibits will be featured. Director Deb Miller said RACDC will be selling Bicentennial Calendars, T-shirts and Christmas ornaments. She’s hoping to have the bicentennial timeline revealed at the festival. Tickets for the Bicentennial Summer Cash 50/50 raffle may also be purchased at the festival. Thanks to the John Edward McLaughlin Family Fund grant, RACDC will once again be providing fun activities for kids at no charge in the FunTastic KidZone on Bank Street. The activities will include airbrush tattoos, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; face painting, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Nick Mambretti’s Super Hilarious Magic Show at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.; and a balloon artist, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sponsored by Main Street Munchkins Daycare, the Munchkins Fun Zone is new this year. Located at Triangle Park on Main Street, the fun zone will provide activities for kids beginning at 10 a.m. An $8 wristband covers everything, including bounce houses, bracelet

The Baby Contest will take place in Triangle Park, with judging at 10:30 a.m. The event will give proud moms and dads the chance to win bragging rights if their child is chosen to be Prince or Princess of this year’s festival. Additional prizes will be awarded for Prettiest Eyes, Cutest Giggle, Best Hair and other categories. All babies 12 months old and younger
are invited to participate. Registration starts at 10 a.m. at the RACDC information booth in front of Community Bank. Sponsored by Julie’s Groom and Board, the popular Dog Show gets underway in Triangle Park at 2:30 p.m. The canine event allows proud owners to show off their pooch and win a prize in various categories that may include Largest, Fluffiest, Smallest, Nosiest, Best Looking,
Most Well-behaved, Most Talented, Looks Most Like Their Owner, Prettiest Eyes and Best Dressed. Entrants must register their four-legged friends at the RACDC information booth, beginning at 2 p.m. Miller reminds everyone that Main Street will be closed the day of the festival, from the intersection of Route 394 to School Street as well as Bank Street, from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. No parking will be available downtown along Main Street, Bank Street or at the former Inkley’s parking lot from 5 p.m. June 19 through 8 p.m. June 20. Cattaraugus County Museum to host WNY Fiddle Kids Saturday MACHIAS — The Cattaraugus County Museum and Research Library, located in the Stone House, 9824 Route 16, Machias, will hold special open hours on Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for its annual “Family Day at the Museum,” including a performance by a group of young local musicians. Family Day is an event that runs as part of New York State Tourism’s “Path Through History” weekend, which aims to foster special events statewide and create excitement about exploring museums, parks and natural spaces. The goal of this event is to provide an opportunity for families who, due to work or school schedules, might have trouble making it to the museum during regular operating hours. Visitors can view the museum’s exhibits
and displays, including the recently restored regimental flag of the 37th NY Volunteer Infantry as well as a new display of Olean Soap Box Derby history. At noon, there will be a performance by the WNY Fiddle Kids, a group of young local musicians led by Heather Pennington, a resident of East Concord. The performers range between about 9 and 18 years of age and play fiddles and guitars. The musical performance will take place under an event tent on the museum’s lawn, rain or shine. Some seating will be available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs if they wish. This event is free and open to the public.
