Salamanca BoE gives OK to pursue future property purchases BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY SALAMANCA — The possibility of future capital project development in the Salamanca City Central School District took one step closer Oct. 19 following action from the school board. The board unanimously approved several resolutions giving the OK for the district to pursue acquiring four residential properties on Hoy Street that border Veterans Memorial Park at its western boundary. A proposition for the district to purchase the properties located at 32-34 Hoy St., 44 Hoy St., 50 Hoy St. and 52 Hoy St. will be on the ballot for a Dec. 14 in the Salamanca High School gymnasium. “Many will ask what
we will use them for,” said Superintendent Robert Breidenstein. “That will be a topic of a future referendum, but similar to other property acquisitions, it touches an important, strategic property that the district maintains.” The property purchases would come with no tax increase to district residents, and purchasing the sites will be funded from existing, budgeted district reserves, Breidenstein said. Proposed purchases for the parcels are $160,000 for 32-34, 44 and 52 Hoy St. at an aggregate estimated maximum cost and $61,000 for 50 Hoy St. The district also proposes to enter into longterm leases with the Seneca
Nation for these four properties in conjunction with these purchases and may remove structures on the properties. Breidenstein said the parcels may be redeveloped in the future to support the district’s athletic facilities located in Vets Park. “Future site development
is being considered including parking or other amenities to the park,” he added. Because the district is not bonding for the purchases, the referendum does not need a 60% majority as many other capital project-related votes do, Breidenstein explained.

BY GIANNA HENSEL LITTLE VALLEY — Andy Wolf, or “The King of the Pumpkin Patch,” is celebrating his latest ghoulish gigantic gourd ready in time to celebrate Halloween. Wolf recently earned North American Champion at the Parks Garden Center in Canfield, Ohio, with a giant pumpkin that weighs in at 2,365 pounds. Wolf, a resident of Little Valley with his wife and kids, works at the Cattaraugus County Health Department during the day, but by night he is an avid giant pumpkin grower. Wolf said his interest
sparked back when he was a child. His parents took him to see a giant pumpkin contest in North Collins. Fast forward to his last year in high school, Wolf recalled being able to get some giant pumpkin seeds from a buddy. He later contacted other pumpkin growers on the internet and his hobby grew from there. Wolf said he first entered a giant pumpkin contest back in 2000. His first entry pumpkin weighed 291 pounds. “It is one of those things you get hooked on,” he said. “You find yourself wanting to beat your weight each
year.” Wolf ensures his large yields through yearlong work, starting in April by planting seeds. He said he uses mini-greenhouses and heating elements to ensure the safety of his planets. As for the soil, Wolf said he sends out a soil sample of his growing spots to see if there are any deficiencies in the nutrients. He adds chicken or cow manure to keep the soil fertile. “Basically, I tell people if you can grow a good garden, you can grow a good pumpkin,” he said. For those looking to get into giant pumpkin
growing, Wolf suggests using the internet to get started. “Most of us hang out at bigpumpkins.com,” he offered. “There is plenty of information out there.” For those who are locals, Wolf says he always has seeds to give out. In fact, you can buy giant pumpkin plants at the local greenhouses that sprouted from Wolf’s pumpkin seeds. Wolf’s giant gourd will be making its way back to New York after Halloween. It is currently on display at the New York Botanical Gardens in New York City.
A day to honor all veterans The month of November is a special time for the nation’s veterans. While Memorial Day honors fallen soldiers and service people, Veteran’s Day, which takes place each November, is an opportunity to commemorate the efforts of all who have been in the armed forces, with a special emphasis on living veterans. While people are encouraged to thank veterans throughout the year, Veteran’s Day is a particularly poignant time to show your appreciation for the men and women of the military. Veteran’s Day takes place on November 11 and marks an important moment in history. On November 11, 1918, World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” unofficially ended when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, took place between Germany and the Allied nations on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. World War I ended on paper when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Armistice Day became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. However, after subsequent
wars, including World Britain, Australia, and and II on or near November War II and the Korean France also commemorate 11 as Remembrance Day or War, veterans’ service or- the veterans of World War I Remembrance Sunday. ganizations lobbied for Armistice Day to be revised so it would be more inclusive of all veterans. Like the flagship store, the Randolph location is also a full-service store offering a variety of pets and the accessories needed to care for them. They carry a variety of birds including love birds, cockatiels, finches, parakeets and canaries. There are reptiles including turtles and tortoises, snakes, anoles, bearded dragons, leopard geckos and sometimes frogs. A tarantula can be found in the store as well as both saltwater and freshwater fish. For the customers who prefer furry pets, the store carries rabbits, hamsters, Guinea pigs, mice and rats. “I don’t do snakes or tarantulas,” Jason Skinner said with a chuckle. “My wife handles them.” Although the store does not sell dogs and cats, they carry toys and treats for both. Skinner said the only dogs they plan to sell at their store are the Pomeranian they bred themselves. Skinner said it seemed like a good opportunity to expand his business into the Randolph and Frewsburg areas because rent was reasonable at both places. “It’s something this area didn’t have. I’m the only pet store between Jamestown and Randolph. Money-wise, I hope it was smart to open these extra stores,” he said.
“I also want to give to the community. I don’t want to see my customers in those two areas drive all the way to my store in Jamestown.” Originally from Salamanca, Skinner now resides in Jamestown with his wife and four children. The couple previously had a restaurant in Jamestown called Skinner’s Kitchen that was doing really well until the COVID-19 pandemic closed it after five months. Skinner said they spent their life’s savings to open their restaurant and had little credit built up, so there was no financial help for them. In an effort to keep their business alive, he said they modified the business by adding a convenience store inside the restaurant. When they saw that the restaurant wasn’t going to make it, they closed it down. Since the food sales were doing well at the convenience store they rented another part of the building to expand, added some fish tanks and reopened as Skinner’s Convenience. Then they got into some reptiles that did well, but slowly outgrew their space and had to move again. Skinner said Pearl City Pets, located at 201 Cherry St. in Jamestown, has been open since November 2020. “We are expanding into Frewsburg at 15 Water St. and hope to open about the second week in November,” he said. “We secured the building about three months ago and have been redoing the inside getting it ready.” Hot Scales Pets in Randolph is open Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. Skinner plans to adjust hours of operation based on demand. Two SUNY JCC Staff Members Receive SUNY Chancellor’s Award OLEAN–Two SUNY Jamestown Community College staff members were awarded the 2021 President’s Award and State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence. Karen Fuller-Markham, director of administrative services, received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Fuller-Markham joined JCC in April 2013 as director of finance and was promoted to her current position in November 2015. Lynn Klingensmith, administrative assistant for JCC’s College Connections program, is the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service. She started as a part-time administrative assistant in 2013 and was promoted to her current position in 2015. Fuller-Markham owns an associate’s degree in business administration from JCC and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from St. Bonaventure University. Prior to coming to JCC, she worked for the accounting firm of Buffamante, Whipple, Buttafaro, P.C. Fuller-Markham led an operations team at JCC that prepared for reopening campus during the pandemic. Her work coordinating the efforts of this team ensured the college was prepared, with a well-planned strategy for staff and students to return to JCC safely. In addition to leading the operations team, she manages the college’s CARES monies, including the distribution of funds to students following regulatory guidelines. Fuller-Markham has been

In addition to her primary jobs, she has held a second job as a server in the restaurant industry. Klingensmith’s attention to detail and mastery of processes ensures that the operational aspects of the College Connections program run smoothly. November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country team up to bring attention to diabetes. This year’s focus is on prediabetes and preventing diabetes. Prediabetes is a serious health condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. According to the CDC, more than 1 in 3 U.S. adults have prediabetes—that’s 88 million people—but the majority of people don’t know they have it. The good news is that by making small healthy lifestyle changes, it is possible to prevent type 2 diabetes and even reverse your prediabetes.
Here are some tips to help manage prediabetes and prevent diabetes.
Take small steps. Making changes to your lifestyle and daily habits can be hard, but you don’t have to change everything at once. It is okay to start small. Remember that setbacks are normal and do not mean you have failed—the key is to get back on track as soon as you can. Move more. Limit time spent sitting and try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity, 5 days a week. Start slowly by breaking it up throughout the day. Choose healthier foods and drinks most of the time. Pick foods that are high in fiber and low in fat and sugar. Build a plate that includes a balance of vegetables, protein, and carbohydrates. Drink water instead of sweetened drinks. Lose weight, track it, and keep it off. You may be able to prevent or delay diabetes by losing 5 to 7 percent of your starting weight. Seek support. It is possible to reverse prediabetes. Making a plan, tracking your progress, and getting support from your health care professional and loved ones can help you make the necessary lifestyle changes. Stay up to date on vaccinations. The COVID-19 (booster shot, if eligible) and flu vaccines are especially important for people who may be more likely to get very sick from COVID-19 or the flu, such as people with diabetes.
