Gift Tree gears up for another season of generosity For 25 years, residents of Olean and the surrounding areas have opened their hearts and wallets to make sure families in need receive holiday presents through the annual Gift Tree program. The annual program, sponsored by Interfaith Caregivers and the Times Herald, coordinates area businesses, schools, organizations and residents to provide holiday gifts for families and individuals they “adopt” in Cattaraugus County. This year’s list of families and their wishes will be published in the Olean Times Herald in November after all applications are received and sorted, said Julie Hall, program coordinator. “We’re trying to hit parts of the county that typically haven’t had much of a chance to be involved, the extremely rural parts of the county,” she said. In 2020, the program adopted 108 families and served nearly 450 people through generous donations, even amid the coronavirus pandemic. New this year, families can access an application for consideration for adoption

right on the organization’s website, www.interfaithcaregiversinc.org. Hall said paper copies can be mailed directly to homes upon request by calling 372-6283. Paper applications can also be found at the Salvation Army of Olean, Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, Blount Library in Franklinville, Randolph Free Library and Ellicottville Memorial Library. “Because we’re doing things a little different this year, we’re expecting to have a little bit of foggy gray

area,” she said. “We don’t know how many applications will come in, it may be many more. We probably will have more work to do.” All applications must be completed online or returned to Interfaith Caregivers, P.O. Box 319, Olean, NY 14760 by Oct. 29. Incomplete applications will not be considered. “Then we’ll need about two weeks to sort through them and see how many we can accommodate,” she said. This year’s adoption list will be published Nov. 10, 16, 23 and 30 in the Times Herald. Each weekly edition

will have updated lists that show who has been adopted. In addition to adopting a family, program volunteers and donors can also sign up on the website. Program headquarters this year will be located at Creekside Chapel, 2523 Five Mile Road in Allegany. Drop-off dates will be made available in the coming weeks. For assistance with completing the application, contact Captain Megan Moretz at the Salvation Army in Olean at 372-6740. Any other questions regarding the Gift Tree program, call 372-6283.

WNY Land Conservancy sets virtual event to ‘Save Allegany Wildlands’

Little Valley Food Pantry has new home at former school building BY DEB EVERTS LITTLE VALLEY — The Little Valley Food Pantry recently moved from the Valley View Baptist Church outside the village to the former Li le Valley school at 207 Rock City St. Food pantry manager Mary Bailey said the new location has enabled the pantry to expand to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers of people in need of food. The former pantry operated out of the Valley View Baptist Church for about 16 years, but outgrew the space because more and more people are coming to the pantry these days. “We knew we were outgrowing our space at the church and we had no storage space to speak of,” Bailey said. “Our freezer and refrigerator was kept in a shed quite a ways behind the church. It meant we had to drive back there over a creek and back up to the shed doors to get the frozen goods and dairy products. There was no good place to turn around, so it was quite a job in the wintertime.” When the need for a bigger pantry space was evident about a year ago, Bailey and one of her main volunteers, the late Jerry Titus, discussed some options for a more suitable place. One idea was to inquire about the former Li le Valley school that now houses the offices of a number of local organizations. “We thought the school would be ideal because it’s right in the middle of town, so people could walk to the panty if they wanted to,”

she said. “When I looked the space over, I thought it was ideal. It was just what we needed.” In July, Bailey and her volunteers made the move to their new location in the back of the school building on the fi rst floor. She said they are quite happy at the school because they now have the convenience of a kitchen, cafeteria, storeroom, walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler. They also have new shelves and other conveniences to work with that they didn’t have at the church. “It’s so much easier here at the school. When we were at the church, we had to go into the storeroom and take all our food out and put it on their tables. When we were fi nished, we had to pack up the stuff and move it back into the storeroom,” she said. “Now, it stays on the shelves. It’s so much better than it was, not that we had any complaints with the church because they were good enough to let us have the pantry there. We just outgrew them.” Bailey said they are getting twice as much food to give away than what they had to offer at the church. With people losing their jobs and falling on hard times, largely due to the pandemic, there are many more people who need food now. “Ordinarily, 20 to 30 people come to the food pantry on Fridays, but 35 showed up this past week,” she said. “On Thursday, when the produce and dairy truck was here, approximately 100 cars came for food. That means we served about 200 people, including children.”

Bailey said she has managed the Li le Valley Food Pantry for two-and-a-half to three years, but has worked there for about seven. When former pantry manager Allie Emerson retired a er 15 years, Bailey took over because she was second in command. The 85-year-old Ca araugus woman and her band of a dozen volunteers dedicate their time and energy to make sure people get the necessary food they need. Some students have been volunteering with them to fulfi ll their community service requirements for school. Bailey welcomes more youth to volunteer at the pantry. Bailey said they survive on grants and donations. They got a grant for food from the Dr. Lyle F. Renodin Foundation two years ago and another grant earlier in October. She said they received another donation through the Food Bank of Western New York in

Buffalo for utensils as well as odds and ends. St. John’s Church in Ca araugus donated $2,000 for their shelving. “We’re so proud of our pantry. We still have a few more things to do, but we are ge ing them done,” she said. In addition to food from the Food Distribution Center in Buffalo, the pantry also gets food donations from Walmart and Tops Market in Springville. They also get pizzas from Li le Caesars in Salamanca. The food pantry is open every Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A truck brings produce and dairy products one Thursday a month from 10 a.m. to noon. Thanks to three generous challenge gifts, the next $120,000 in donations will be matched one to one.” Once the goal is met, the conservancy will purchase the land and keep it open as a publicly accessible nature preserve forever. To kick off the final fundraising push of the campaign, the conservancy would host a free virtual event on Oct. 27, featuring Marx, from 7 to 8 p.m. Attendees would also hear from Jajean RoseBurney, deputy executive director of the WNY Land Conservancy, about how they can save the Allegany Wildlands. The Western New York Land Conservancy was expected to host Ed Marx of the Wildlands Network for an Oct. 27 virtual event to “Save the Allegany Wildlands.” The conservancy and the Friends of the Allegany Wildlands are working to buy a 200-acre parcel it calls the Allegany Wildlands overlooking the Allegheny Reservoir in the town of South Valley. It is an unglaciated area that has similarities to parts of nearby Allegany State Park and is home to a spectacular diversity of plants and animals, WNY Land Conservancy spokesman Kyle Semmel said. Tannery Bridge continued from 1 Cattaraugus County Public Works Commissioner Kathleen Ellis told the County Legislature’s Public Works Committee on Oct. 20 that engineers are recommending placement of additional stone at the base of the foundation to further halt movement of unstable soils. Last fall the bridge contractor, Edbauer Construction Co., West Seneca placed about 400 tons of stone at the base of the foundation in a bid to halt the cracks. It did slow the rate of the expansion of the cracks, but the bridge remained closed as the studies continued. Engineers have also recommended tying the cracks together by fabricating some kind of connectors that would be bolted into the surface of the foundation. That will probably come next spring after the movement has been stopped by additional stone. Another 100 tons of stone may be added at the base of the

foundation. One legislator questioned whether that would work after 1-inch rebar in the concrete was sheared by the movement from unstable soils. “The road has been shut down for the past 16 months,” Ellis said. “We’re going to do some work this fall to get the bridge open.” The old bridge, three corrugated culverts topped by concrete, was built in 1924. The DPW had submitted several plans to replace it since 2008, but there were questions over soil stability at the site. It was on the construction list in 2020. In another development, Crystal Abers, director of the Department of Economic Development told the Development and Agriculture Committee progress is being made on plans to improve camping and other attractions at the county-operated Onoville Marina on the Allegheny Reservoir. The marina generated $647,559 in revenues in 2021, Abers told committee members. That’s up about $7,400 from last year. “The bottom line is we are up,” she said, adding that new rates for next year will require legislative approval. The camping rates and dock rental has not increased in

five years. Onoville extended its camping season by three weeks this fall until Columbus Day, Abers said. That generated another $700 in camping fees and $7,200 in dock fees. Abers said she met with officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers earlier in October at Onoville. The Corps agreed that there were things that could be done to add to the 48 seasonal campsites, but that there is almost no space to expand the dock system due to the proximity of the Seneca Nation boundary. The marina may look to expand its revenues by attracting people without boats, Abers said. A kayak launch and fishing dock are being considered. The Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism is interviewing engineering companies to prepare plans for changes in the configuration of the camping areas at the marina as well as new bathroom facilities and sewer and water lines. The companies are also being asked to submit proposals for a new camping area on property the county owns across West Perimeter Road on Sawmill Run, Abers said.

Six American chestnut trees more than 40 feet tall still survive at the Allegany Wildlands, some of which are producing seeds, Semmel said. Large oaks, a threatened lily called a White Clintonia, and rare orchids also grow here. Underneath the forest canopy, black bears and bobcats roam the ridges and ravines. The property was purchased by the Sluga family in the early 1800s. Though the Sluga family has decided to sell the land, for the next chapter of this forest’s

story, they want it protected, Semmel said. Protecting the Allegany Wildlands represents the fi rst act of the Land Conservancy’s ambitious, decades-long project it’s calling the Western New York Wildway. The Wildway will be a connected corridor of protected lands that stretches from the vast forests of northern Pennsylvania to the Great Lakes, through to the Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks, and beyond. It will form part of the Eastern Wildway which runs all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Semmel said, “The Wildway will allow plants and animals to migrate across the land as they once did, it will allow those that have disappeared from our region to return home, and it will allow those in need to move around to new homes as climate changes.” The Allegany Wildlands is already connected to 7,000 acres of protected state land, nestled between Allegany State Park and South Valley State Forest, and it is a significant link in this future Western New York Wildway, he said. fundraising goal by Dec. 31, it could be logged and developed, Semmel said. Marx will explain to participants in the free Allegany Wildlands virtual event the impact of saving forests like the Allegany Wildlands has on the larger Eastern Wildway. “The Eastern Wildway seeks to address this challenge head-on, and we’re thrilled that the Land Conservancy is joining us in our effort to create a large-scale habitat corridor running up and down the east coast,” he said. “The Allegany Wildlands is an important piece of that effort.” The Land Conservancy is looking for donations of all sizes in order to save the Allegany Wildlands.
