Cattaraugus County students among cast members for JCC fall musical JAMESTOWN — Students from Cattaraugus County are among cast members for The Jamestown Community College Uncommoners’ fall 2021 musical production of “Pump Boys and Dinettes.”

The musical, postponed from its original intended premiere in April 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19, will be presented at 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 12, 13, 19 and 20 and at 2 p.m. on Nov. 14 and 21.

Performances will be held in

the Weeks Teleconference Hall, located in the center of the Jamestown Campus’ Katherine Jackson Carnahan Center.

The cast features Skyler Schapp of Little Valley as Jim; Derek DeVlieger of Lakewood as L.M.; JoAnn Liffner of Jamestown as Prudie; Teal Weatherley of Jamestown as Rhetta; Adam Hughes of Jamestown as Jackson; and Brandon Milanowski of Salamanca

as Eddie.

The production is directed

by Adam Owens, with technical direction by Graham Riggle.

“The purpose of theater, according to Shakespeare, is to hold a mirror up to nature; to show the audience what life is like in a particular time and place — but that doesn’t mean it needs to be boring,” Owens said. “The characters in Pump Boys and Dinettes are anything

but boring. With music, dancing and lots of good laughs (and perhaps a few tears) our goal is to remember the good times and cherish those near and dear to us.”

Conceived and written by John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann, Pump Boys and Dinettes spotlights L.M., Jackson, Jim and Eddie, four men who work at a

gas station; and two waitresses, sisters Prudie and Rhetta Cupp, who work at the Double Cupp Diner, a dinette located somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, N.C. Pump Boys and Dinettes first appeared at the Colonnades Theatre in New York City on Oct. 1, 1981, and was nominated for the 1982 Tony Award for Best Musical and also received nominations for the

1982 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Lyrics and Outstanding Music.

Tickets are $6 for JCC students, $19 for senior citizens and students 18-and-under, $11 for Faculty Student Association faculty and staff and $19 for the general public. They can be purchased by calling the box office at (716) 338-1187 or at the door.

Volunteers wanted for the Cattaraugus County Youth Court program LITTLE VALLEY — The Cattaraugus County Youth Court is in need of volunteers.

Youth Court is a statesanctioned court system that is based on the philosophy of restorative justice. It is a voluntary alternative to the traditional juvenile justice system for first-time offenders ages 7-18 who have committed a non-felony crime or offense.

The goal of Youth Court is to intervene in early anti-social, delinquent or criminal behaviors. Not only are the needs of the respondent

addressed, but also those of the victim and community as a whole.

The Youth Court volunteers consist of highly trained middle and high school students ages 12-17 who fill the traditional roles of courtroom personnel including judge, defense and prosecution for the Youth Court hearing.

The Youth Court Coordinator oversees the proceedings and daily operations of the program. These volunteers gain a strong understanding of the justice system, practice public speaking, earn numerous

hours of community service and learn strong leadership skills that will greatly benefit them in the future.

Youth Court team members are required to complete the Youth Court training course and attend the training sessions; participate at Youth Court hearings as often as twice a month; abide by the Youth Court code of ethics; uphold the integrity of the Youth Court program at all times; and have written consent and support from their parents or guardian to participate.

Training will be held in November at 207 Rock City

St., Room 200, in Little Valley.

Rail Rider Jamboree festival coming to Holiday Valley ELLICOTTVILLE — The promoters of Borderland Music + Arts Festival have teamed up with Holiday Valley Resort to present the inaugural Rail Rider Jamboree.

The Rail Rider Jamboree will take place March 19, 2022, at Holiday Valley Resort and is a weekend filled with music, skiing, snowboarding competitions, brews and so much more.

Spend the day on the mountain at Holiday Valley and end it with the ultimate “apres” party at the Rail Rider Jamboree. There will be live bands all day on two stages, food vendors, craft vendors and more. The Jamboree is outdoors with music starting around 2 p.m. Fans can expect to see

regional, local and national bands performing throughout the day. The Jamboree will take place in the field on Route 219 across from the SnowPine chair.

Rail Rider Jamboree will kick off on Friday, March 18 at Holiday Valley with rail jam contests and live music, slopeside at the base of the mountain at the Rail Park.

Only two contested elections for supervisor in Cattaraugus County

COUNTY REPORTER Twenty of the 32 towns in Cattaraugus County have elections for town supervisor on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Only two of those are contested elections for supervisor: the towns of Freedom, where candidates are on opposite sides of the Alle-Catt Wind Farm controversy and Lyndon, where a Democrat incumbent is being challenged by a Republican.

Of the 15 candidates in supervisor elections, 14 are incumbents seeking re-election. A handful are running unopposed on the Democrat and Republican lines.

In the Town of Freedom supervisor race, two councilmen are seeking to succeed Supervisor Randy Lester, a Democrat and AlleCatt supporter.

They are Democrat Dustin Bliss, an Alle-Catt supporter who has several wind leases on his property and Republican Geoffrey Milks, who is opposed to the

Lyndon Supervisor Barbara Montante, who is running on the Democrat and Integrity Party lines, is being challenged by Republican Donald Hall.

Several towns have Republican candidates also running with Democratic endorsement including Coldspring, Dayton, Red House, Salamanca and South Valley.

The only candidate for supervisor in the Town of Salamanca is former Supervisor Timothy Jackson, who resigned earlier this year. His resignation was too late to replace him on the ballot with another candidate. Jackson had the Democrat and Republican lines.

Notable in the Town of Mansfield is the absence of the name of Supervisor Robert Keis Sr., who has held the office for more than 30 years. Republican Carl Calarco is unopposed to succeed Keis as supervisor.

Memory Bench continued from 1 abandoned Cattaraugus elementary school building located at South and Washington streets, classmates, friends and family members in attendance shared memories of their loved ones lost.

Class member Jonathan Willard and Erin Irons, class vice president, led the ceremony honoring the memories of three deceased classmates, Steven H. Van Splunder (Dec. 15, 1998), Michael D. Goldfus (Feb. 22,2000) and Kevin A. Thalheimer (May 16, 2019).

During the ceremony, a silver nameplate bearing the name and date of death of each person was applied to the bench by a friend or family member. As each nameplate was added, Irons and Willard shared fond memories of the gone, but not forgotten, class members.

Irons presented the first nameplate in memory of Van Splunder, who was taken from them way too early in 1998. She said it was a time when the class was

just starting their families and careers 23 years ago.

“Steve left us with many fond memories to look back on and to smile about,” she said. “He was always someone you could count on to break the monotony of school activities with his dry wit and sly smile that would always get us laughing and off-task. He made our church youth group meetings fun and exciting.

If he wasn’t there, it just wasn’t the same. Somewhere out there, we hope he hears the impact he has made and that this nameplate will preserve his memory for years to come.”

The second classmate to be remembered was Goldfus, who passed away in 2000. Willard said they lost him between their 10 and 20-year reunions.

“I always remember Mike as the kid with the million dollar smile. He always reminded me a little bit of Kiefer Sutherland,” he said.

“Mike was a polite, quiet and focused young man. He could be a little rebellious at times, as we all were. I remember playing Little League Baseball with him.

Mike is always going to be missed and we will always cherish our memories of him.”

in 2019, was when he was invited to his fifth or sixth birthday party. He said Thalheimer was always a sweet and thoughtful person growing up. He was always willing to help his teachers and his classmates.

“If we needed a name and address, Kevin was able to provide that because he always seemed to keep in contact with everybody,” he said.

Willard said the initial bench idea started when a memory bench was done for a friend of Irons’ who passed away. That’s when they really started focusing on it and Thalheimer’s passing inspired them further.

The idea was discussed at their 10-year reunion and

again at their 20-year but never developed into anything. As their 30th class reunion approached several years ago, he was struck with determination to not let their classmates be forgotten.

“We became determined to see this through after Kevin’s passing in May,” he said. “It was four months before our 30-year reunion and, as we were planning, it was really fresh in our mind. At that reunion, we collected money to have a memory bench for classmates who have gone before us and classmates to pass in the future.”

Irons said the decision on where to put the bench, ironically, came full circle.

She said they originally planned to have it at the high school where they graduated but the need was not great there, so they began a search in town trying to find a place that would benefit from a bench the most. They were redirected to the site at their old elementary school where it all began for most of them, so it’s quite fitting.

“This bench signifies unity, friendship and a place to gather,” she said.

“Our hope is that more benches will join this one as the beautification of this area continues.”

Willard said they would like to see their actions inspire other classes to start a memory bench to remember

their classmates that have passed. To encourage other classes, he has set up a matching grant through the Cattaraugus Central High School Alumni Association.

Any class that does a memory bench within the next five years, he’ll assist with 50 percent of the bench cost up to $500.

“I’ll do one a year for the next five years,” he said.

“Hopefully, it will give people a jump-start on a bench and give people motivation to raise the rest.”

It is hoped that the memory bench may help people come to terms with the loss of their classmates. In a sense, a bench is viewed as a celebration of life that can be enjoyed for years to come.
