Operation Warm Hearts establishes CRCF agency fund OLEAN–When Ann Marie Sitter Tompkins and other volunteers originally decided to run a coat drive to provide warm winter clothes to children in need in 2020, they thought it would be a one-time effort. The success of that first winter clothing distribution and the obvious need for it led to the official establishment of a new nonprofit, Operation Warm Hearts, to make the distribution of new clothing to area children a full-time effort. Recently, the agency decided to establish an agency endowment fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation to make sure their efforts will be sustainable for many years to come. The organization began when Sitter Tompkins’s mother, Mary Basnight, passed away at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Due to restrictions, Tompkins could not be with her mother or hold a formal funeral at the time, so she decided to lead an effort to provide mittens to area youth, under the name Mary’s Mittens, in her mother’s honor. “A couple of my friends had heard about that, and they had been wanting to start a project to provide winter coats called Jackie’s Jackets, so we decided to marry the two” Sitter Tompkins, now Operation Warm Hearts president, remembered. “And that is how Operation Warm Hearts began.” The efforts of Operation

The agency now buys new winter clothing and boots for children from infancy to 18 years old. Every child also now receives a book at their grade reading level as well as a toothbrush and toothpaste. WVDP experts detail Main Plant demolition safeguards WEST VALLEY — The Department of Energy and CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV), its cleanup contractor at the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP), announced the availability of two videos related to the future demolition of the Main Plant process building. The first video on environmental monitoring provides details on the site’s state-of-the-science monitoring system, which that verifies the protective measures and safeguards in place continue to be protective of employees, the public and the environment. “The removal and disposal of the Main Plant process building is the primary task we have left to do under our contract scope of work,” said CHBWV President John Rendall. “More than 98 percent of the contamination has been removed from the building, and we have monitoring controls in place to ensure safety and compliance.” The video includes subject matter experts from the Regulatory Strategy

A Circus comes to Versailles Uncle Ben’s Remedy, Ironlace And Others To Perform VERSAILLE, NY— On Saturday October 16, the Versailles Community Hall will be the venue for a fall festival with the atmosphere of a circus bazaar. Performers Rachel Galati & Iron Lace, Uncle Ben’s Remedy, and aerialist Lily LeStrange will grace the stage, and a juggler and balloon artist will entertain the crowd. Doors will open at 7 pm and $10 admission will be accepted upon entry for this all-ages show. Pizza, popcorn, beer, wine, and soda will be available for purchase. For the past 20 months, the Versailles Community Hall has laid dormant, its 80-year-old floors untouched by dancing feet, the room devoid of the festivities it had come to know and expect over the past several decades. Save for a few socially distanced chess games on Tuesday nights among a handful of community members, the flagship of the community has been

beached. On Saturday October 16, the silence will be broken. Hometown boys Uncle Ben’s Remedy will headline the show after a performance by another local favorite, Rachel Galati & Iron Lace. Acrobat Lily LeStrange will be performing an aerial hoop show between musical

acts, and during Uncle Ben’s Remedy’s show. The 21-year-old has been practicing in the circus arts for three years and is proficient in hoops (known as aerial ring or Lyra), silk acrobatics, and some trapeze. There will be juggling arts and slight-of-hand magic performed by Scott

Johnson. Local balloon artist Ruth Dieke will be on hand to share her craft with kids of any age. Pizza, popcorn, beer, wine, and soft drinks will all be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Versailles Community Association.

The Arts Council is honored to disperse over $41,000 in regrants for the following live performing arts projects: • The Cherry Creek Community Association for its Kick-off to Summer Event – Celebrating the Red, White and Blue; • the Cassadaga Lakes Association for its Labor Day of Love Labor Day parade; • to the Cattaraugus County Living Arts

Custom ice cream shop open in Conewango

BY DEB EVERTS

CONEWANGO — Colquhoun’s Custom Ice Cream sprang up this summer and has been a popular go-to destination along the Amish Trail. Owners Gene and Tammy Calhoun have been offering ice cream lovers their custom-made ice cream since mid-July when they opened their shop in the heart of Conewango. The husband and wife duo operate their entire business together including making the ice cream and serving their customers. The Calhouns have created 87 different hard ice cream flavors including white chocolate with raspberries and peanut butter Butterfinger. More are to come as people give them ideas and make requests. The ice cream is sold by the half-pint, pint and half-gallon. Soft serve vanilla and chocolate ice cream is available in cones.Tammy said they have custard every once in a while because people request it and, on some days, they have espresso, salted caramel and strawberry twist. They try to do sundaes on Sundays and milkshakes on Mondays.

Neither Tammy nor Gene had much experience making ice cream until they began making it for family and friends in their home kitchen. Gene said the push to get out of the house and into a separate building was partly because of health department regulations, but it was also getting crowded in the kitchen. Tammy said they started with 20 flavors and before they knew it there were 50, and there could be 100 soon. She said most of the flavors started as what they really wanted in ice cream as kids. Family, friends and customers have rapidly added to the list. All 87 choices of ice cream are not available everyday. Tammy said they rotate the flavors and the selections of the day are posted on a sign outside the shop. “Yes, it’s like Forrest Gump, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get,’” Gene said. “Some people are excited by that. They can’t wait to see what flavors we have each day,” Tammy added. The idea for an ice cream business came about when one of Gene’s Amish friends asked if he could store ice cream in his barn. He said

an Amish man would be over at the barn getting ice cream everyday. His Amish friend kept suggesting that he also sell ice cream but, at the time, he had too much going on to pursue it. “Last year, I watched them come in and out of the barn and I thought, ‘Man, they really like their ice cream. Maybe there’s something to this,’” he recalled. “So, I started checking into machines and brands of ice cream. I started talking to more and more people about the business and, next thing you know, I bought a machine.” The shop was built from the frame of an old camping trailer. Tammy said Gene built most of it himself with help from family and friends. She said the trailer transformation began in April, as soon as the snow melted until the day before they opened July 15. The couple is using an ancient family motto, “Si Je Puis,” which means “If I can” in French, and a coat of arms for their business. Gene said the motto comes from a story about his Scottish heritage, as does the name Colquhoun (pronounced kuhl·hoon), the original spelling of Calhoun. He said the French came into play

because England and France were fighting over Scotland back in 1424 when Sir John Colquhoun seized possession of Dumbarton Castle. The Calhouns have a short commute to work with the ice cream shop next door. There’s a nice shady area off of the parking lot where customers can sit and enjoy their ice cream. Both grew up locally, Tammy in Kennedy and Gene on John Darling Road in the town of Conewango, until sixth grade. Gene, who is also an antique dealer specializing in toys, had a booth at the Salamanca Antique Mall for a while. He said their future plans could include an antique shop in the barn and expanding the ice cream/ sub shop. Colquhoun’s Custom Ice Cream is located at 5543 Route 62 in Conewango. The ice cream shop is expected to stay open through Nov. 30. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 4-8 p.m.; Friday, 4-9 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 8 p.m. For more information, or to pre-order a custom flavor or half-gallon container, call Gene at (716) 485-8118.

Cattaraugus County eyeing Family Justice Center, DA says BY RICK MILLER LITTLE VALLEY — Cattaraugus County appears to be moving toward establishing a Family Justice Center to deal with domestic violence involving children and adults. District Attorney Lori P. Rieman told Cattaraugus County lawmakers on Oct. 6 her office had applied for a $50,000 grant to begin planning for the center. A non-profit corporation has been established with a board of directors that includes former state Sen. Catharine M. Young, former Supreme Court Judge Jeremiah J. Moriarty and Colleen Young, president of the Bank of Cattaraugus. Assemblyman Joseph Giglio has been a supporter of the county establishing such a center, which aids survivors of domestic and gender-based violence and their children.

Centers elsewhere in New York are connected to organizations that provide case management, economic empowerment, counseling and civil and criminal legal assistance. “The assemblyman thought it was doable in our county,” Rieman told the County Legislature’s Operations/Public Safety Committee. “You haven’t found a place yet?” asked Dick Klancer, R-Gowanda, the committee chairman. “That’s right,” replied Rieman. “We just incorporated last year.” The Department of Social Services has applied for a $500,000 grant to help move the program along but hasn’t heard whether the grant will be approved. This is just a beginning phase, Rieman said. The board of directors would have to settle on an executive director to run the new

program. “It’s not going to cost the county anything,” Rieman said. “I’m hoping for other grant funds.” One legislator said it seemed like the program would cost millions and he didn’t think the county was ready to take it on financially. The district attorney assured committee members that additional grants would be needed to fully implement the program. The Public Works Committee also approved

a road/bridge swap with the town of Mansfield. The county will deed 3.17 miles of Dublin Road to the town in return for two bridges on Jersey Hollow Road and Kent Road that are in need of replacement. Engineering director Bill Fox said the cost to the county to pave Dublin Road is about $1.3 million. The cost of the new bridges is about $1.1 million. The $200,000 difference will go to the Town of Mansfield to use toward fixing the road.

3-D Pumpkin Carving Class

Image provided Michael Weishan’s “Water Lily and Reeds” was a category winner of the Audubon Community Nature Center’s photo contest.

Cattaraugus man wins Audubon photo category Michael Weishan of Cattaraugus was among the winners of Audubon Community Nature Center’s 2021 nature photography contest with his stunning “Water Lilies and Reeds.” The photo took first place in the Adult Division Flora and earned Michael a $200

cash prize. Audubon Center officials say the response to the photo contest was truly international — entries came from 17 countries, representing five continents, as well as from more than 30 states. Winners came from across the country and finalists

from around the world, including Switzerland, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Australia. Top photographs submitted for the contest will be on display at the Nature Center in Jamestown. Fine art nature photographer Karen Glosser judged this year’s

competition. The Audubon Community Nature Center is located at 1600 Riverside Road, a quarter-mile east of Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren, Pa.

PORTVILLE– Famed local artist and pumpkin carver extraordinaire, Eric Jones will be hosting a pumpkin carving class at the Portville Free Library in support of Pfeiffer Nature Center! Come learn some tricks of the carving trade from the master himself! This extraordinary and fun carving class will prove to be a highlight of your fall season! All materials, including pumpkins will be supplied. The fee is $40 per person for the class Friday, October 15th from 6-8pm. Due to limited class size, registration is required and is on a first come first serve basis. The fee is non-refundable. This class is available for adults and kids ages 10 and up. For adults, we can accommodate one person per pumpkin. Kids ages 10-12 need an adult present to

supervise at their pumpkin. Parents for kids over the age of 12 can remain at the library, just not at the carving table. Reservations required by Thursday, October 14th. Reserve your space(s) by registering on the Programs Calendar on our website at www.pfeiffernaturecenter. org. Contact naturalist@ pfeiffernaturecenter.org for questions. This program will be held at the Portville Free Library, 2N. Main Street, Portville NY. COVID safety precautions must be followed. Pfeiffer Nature Center is supported by United Way funding. 3 ways to get more out of your devices on long car trips Once an uncomfortable means to a worthy end, long car trips have changed quite a bit since many of today’s adults age 30 and over were children. Parents are no doubt familiar with the familiar cry of, “Are we there yet?” emanating from the backseat. But such queries are now less frequent than they once were. And that’s thanks in large part to devices and the access to data that they

provide. Devices can help passengers stay occupied on long trips. Devices vary in terms of their capabilities, and that can affect just how useful they are on the road. But the following are three ways for travelers to get more out of their devices while on the road. 1. Download, download, download. Downloading prior to a trip allows travelers to access content offline. That means service interruptions and Wifi dead zones won’t interrupt podcasts, television shows or movies. Downloading ahead of time also saves people without unlimited data plans from having to pay data overage charges. 2. Turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot. Smartphones have direct access to high-speed mobile network connections that tablets and laptops won’t be able to access without a little handiwork. That handiwork involves converting a phone into a hotspot, which can be done easily through the settings function in most smartphones. Once the phone is established as a hotspot, other devices can typically piggyback on its network connection. 3. Accessorize your vehicle. Staring down at a smartphone or tablet for hours on end is no one’s idea of comfort. Thankfully, comfort need not be sacrificed for entertainment. A headrest mount can be attached to the headrest of a front seat and accommodate a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets. Devices are simply slipped into the mount so passengers won’t have to hold them in their hands as they watch their favorite television shows and movies. Headrest mounts may be convenient, but kids might not be able to reach

touchscreens while buckled in. In such instances, parents can replace their existing headrests with headrests with built-in monitors that come with remote controls that make it easy to adjust volume and other settings without undoing a seat belt. Access to devices can make long road trips feel less boring and more entertaining.
