Salamanca High School awarded CNC machine in national contest SALAMANCA — Salamanca High School recently won a new Tormach 770M+ CNC machine for use in the district’s STEAM program. “I am elated for the technical training opportunity this machine will bring to our school and district community,” said Superintendent Robert Breidenstein. The giveaway was part of the TITANS of CNC “BOOMBASTIC” event, which took place May 25-27. “In honor of our partnership with TITANS of CNC, we are offering this giveaway to support CNC education,” said Lori Morrison Buffalo, Tormach marketing director. As part of their applications, all of the entrants had to write an anecdotal story on why their school, makerspace or robotics team could use a Tormach CNC machine and how it would help them achieve their program’s goals. Salamanca was chosen out of hundreds of submissions. Officials said it was gratifying to know Tormach is helping to kick off the careers of the next generation of machinists. Tormach Inc. is a leading supplier of high-end hobbyist CNC machines. The 770M+ transforms a stock piece of material such as a block of plastic, metal or

wood into a finished product, typically a prototype part, utilizing a controlled material removal process. “We are thrilled to be taking delivery of the Tormach machine,” said STEAM coordinator Aaron Straus. “Machinists are in high demand not only in our region but throughout the entire country. This machine and the PathPilot software will
help us teach our students CNC machining, a skill that will help many of them secure a gainful career upon exit from our high school.” According to officials, the equipment will be incorporated into the college certificate STEM program called Project SAMI, which launches this October for Salamanca students.

Tri-County Arts Council announces grant recipients OLEAN — The Tri-County Arts Council is delighted to announce recipients of Restart NY Regrants, a special grant initiated by the governor’s office to help New York State recover from months of COVID-19 quarantine and isolation. Restart NY Regrants is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the governor and New York State Legislature and administered by TriCounty Arts Council. “The Restart NY regrant is a unique and generous opportunity to promote live performing arts in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany counties as we slowly recover from the long isolating months of COVID-19,” Mikel Wintermantel, executive director of the Tri-County Arts Council, said, adding,

“The intent was to appropriate funding for live performances in an effort to encourage people to get out and about and enjoy the wide variety of cultural organization events and groups we have in this community.” All grant recipients are non-profits from the tricounty region which work diligently with scarce funding to bring live performing arts to their communities, many of which are rural and a considerable distance from big city theaters and symphony orchestras. The Arts Council is honored to disperse over $41,000 in regrants for the following live performing arts projects: The Cherry Creek Community Association for its Kick-off to Summer Event – Celebrating the Red, White and Blue; the Cassadaga Lakes Association for its Labor Day of Love Labor Day parade; to the Cattaraugus

Community Bank donates to area nonprofits For the fourth consecutive year, Community Bank N.A. celebrated National Good Neighbor Day on Tuesday by showing support for its community with donations to local nonprofits. In total, Community Bank donated $53,750 to nonprofits across its fourstate footprint in New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Massachusetts. Locally, four branches in Cattaraugus County contributed $250 to local nonprofits of their choice: • Allegany donated to Intandem, which supports individuals with developmental disabilities in Cattaraugus and Niagara counties. • Franklinville donated to Christmas Spirit, which
provides clothes, food and gifts for families in need. • Randolph donated to the Cattaraugus County 4-H to support youth agricultural programs. • Salamanca donated to the Cattaraugus County Living Arts Association to help purchase costumes and lighting. National Good Neighbor Day was created in 1971 by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana, and proclaimed a national day by President Jimmy Carter in 1978 to raise public awareness that good neighbors help achieve human understanding and build strong, thriving communities. It is celebrated annually on Sept. 28 as a day of gratitude and community building.

Photo provided Ellicottville Skatepark Committee members and youth skaters accept a donation for a new skatepark from the Rotary Club of Ellicottville.
Skate Park continued from 1 Foundation, the Built to Play grant offers qualifying Western New York communities up to $250,000 in matching funds to apply towards the construction of outdoor, concrete skateparks. “The Rotary Club of Ellicottville is proud to support this local effort to expand outdoor recreation opportunities for our youth,”
said Doug Anderson, Rotary president. “Sk8EVL has done a tremendous job in raising funds and awareness for the skate park. Our club committed early on to making their vision a reality.” SK8EVL began advocacy efforts in 2018, with the BTP grant awarded in November 2019. Since then, advocates have hosted numerous fundraisers and donation drives, working their way towards their goal. “As soon as we got word that our BTP grant application was approved, we started fundraising efforts,” said Brenda Perks, SK8EVL lead advocate. “About three months into fundraising,
Covid hit and the world shut down. Fundraising during a pandemic is next to impossible, but we came up with creative ways to continue our efforts. Many of the businesses and organizations here, including the Rotary Club, answered the call.” With a commitment of $25,000, the Rotary Club of Ellicottville has secured the “Greenspace” sponsorship level and will have naming rights of their choice of a bench or tree that will be designed within the skatepark. “The Rotary was actually one of the first organizations to express their
support when this project began,” said Perks. “They see the value of having a skatepark and what it will do for our community and for our youth. Skateboarding provides a lot of benefits both physically and mentally, and it has a way of bringing people together. We are extremely thankful for the Rotary’s donation, and for their commitment to our community.” “We understand the importance of getting these kids outside and active, and skateboarding is a great, affordable option,” said Anderson. “This project aligns right up with the Rotary’s mission to provide
these types of opportunities for the youth of our area.” The Ellicottville Skatepark will be located inside Ellicottville’s Village Park and, when completed, will be available to the public at no charge. Construction is expected to
begin next spring. To learn more about the Ellicottville Skatepark and how you can contribute, visit sk8evl.com. To learn more about the Rotary Club of Ellicottville, visit ellicottvillerotary.com.

AUTO CORNER Mileage-based vehicle maintenance intervals
Maintenance is an essential component of responsible vehicle ownership. Routine maintenance can help discover problems before they escalate into potentially costly issues. Maintenance also keeps vehicles running smoothly, making them more enjoyable to drive and extending their life expectancy. Various factors can help to determine how often drivers should change their vehicles’ fluids and take them in for tuneups. Such

variables include how frequently a vehicle is driven, the type of driving (city or rural) drivers do and how many miles are on the car. However, drivers can still rely on this basic car maintenance schedule, courtesy of Advance Auto Parts, to serve as a guide. 3,000 miles/3 months Advance Auto Parts notes that monthly fluid checks typically are unnecessary with newer vehicles, though older vehicles should be inspected for leaks once a month. Among the fluids to check after every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first, are: · Engine oil level · Windshield washer fluid · Coolant · Brake fluid level · Transmission fluid · Power steering fluid Drivers also can use 3,000 miles or three months as a benchmark to check tire pressure, hoses and belts. Many vehicles now display tire pressure for each tire on the dashboard, and drivers should pay attention to those numbers and put air in their tires when necessary. When inspecting hoses, touch them to make sure they’re not leaking and bulging. Hoses should be a little flexible, especially when they are warm. 5,000 miles/6 months Oil and oil filters should be changed at this interval. In addition, this is a good time to rotate tires and inspect lights to make sure they’re still operating at peak capacity. Drivers also can check their cabin and engine air filters and replace them if need be. Changing these filters is a simple DIY project, and drivers can find an assortment of YouTube tutorials to help them complete these projects. Wiper blades also can be inspected around this time or whenever drivers suspect the blades aren’t operating at peak capacity. Replacing wiper blades is another simple DIY project that drivers can complete in a few minutes. 10,000 miles/12 months Advance Auto Parts notes that synthetic oil is typically used in cars made since 2010. Each manufacturer is different, and drivers
should check their manuals for recommendations. Synthetic oil and filters in vehicles that use synthetic oil is typically changed every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Once a year drivers should ask their mechanics to check the alignment on their vehicles and the condition of their brakes. Routine maintenance can keep vehicles running strong for years on end.
