Rabies Prevention: 5 tips to protect you and your dogs FAMILY FEATURES Around the world every year, an estimated 59,000 people die from rabies following a bite or scratch from an infected dog, according to the World Health Organization; almost half of them children under 15 years old. With preventive steps, including vaccination, you can protect your human and canine family members. In large areas of the world, rabies continues to be a serious health issue. Of the estimated 900 million dogs
around the world, the majority (75-85%) are not household pets. In the countries where rabies is a continued threat and outbreaks continue, both owned and un-owned dogs may be at risk if they are not receiving rabies vaccinations.Learn more about this preventable disease and how you can stop its spread with these tips from the experts at MSD Animal Health’s Afya Program. Know What Rabies Is and How It Gets Transmitted Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease (a disease that can be
passed from animals to humans) that causes fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, not only in wild animals but also domestic animals and humans. The rabies virus is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, usually through a bite or scratch. In up to 99% of cases, domestic dogs are responsible for human rabies infections. The time it takes to show symptoms of rabies depends on the distance the virus has to travel from the bite site to the brain. If someone gets
bitten on a toe, it could take weeks or even months to show symptoms, but if bitten on the face, he or she could become rabid in just a few days. Once symptoms are present, the disease is 100% fatal. Symptoms include anxiety, confusion, partial paralysis, agitation, aggression, hypersalivation, difficulty swallowing, fear of water and, eventually, paralysis, coma and death. Ensure Your Dogs are Vaccinated Through vaccination of dogs, rabies is 100% preventable. You can do your
part by ensuring your dog stays current on its rabies vaccination, which is administered by a veterinarian in either one-year or three-year doses. Get Prompt Medical Attention If someone has been bitten or scratched by a suspected rabid dog and may have been exposed to rabies, a vaccination can be part of the treatment. However, it’s important to immediately wash the wound for 15 minutes with soap and running water. This can help remove and inactivate any virus which
may have been inoculated. The post-exposure vaccination course will depend on your prior vaccination history, so you’ll need to consult your doctor or visit the emergency room for immediate medical care. Democrats' Redistricting continued from 1 neighboring districts. Cattaraugus and Allegany counties are in the 23rd, which stretches from Chautauqua County in the west to Tioga County in the east and up into the Finger Lakes region. Meanwhile, Republicans, who ultimately will have far less say in the matter, want to carve up the 19th District that runs through the Hudson Valley and into the Albany area currently held by Democratic Rep. Antonio Delgado. Public hearings on redistricting are still planned across the state, but by early next year the new map for the state’s 26 congressional districts and 150 seats in the state Legislature could be set. State Sen. George Borrello called the two maps proposed by Democrats and Republicans on the redistricting committee “concerning.” “After decades of redistricting being dominated by partisan battles and gerrymandering, this year promised to be different,” he said in a statement Wednesday. “A 2014 referendum passed by voters gave the oncea-decade responsibility for drawing legislative and congressional district maps to a new ‘Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC),’ with the goal of ensuring no region, special interest or political party gained an unfair advantage over another.” Borrello said the two maps released Wednesday “suggests the very real possibility that the process will end up being controlled, once again, by the Legislature, where Democrats can use the behind-closed-doors gerrymandering process to strengthen their one party rule.” The senator said Democrats have little incentive to compromise through the framework of the IRC. Democrats control the Senate, House and governor’s post and they want to eliminate a GOP seat as New York goes from 27 to 26 congressional seats due to small growth in the state’s population. Republicans hold eight of New York’s House seats going into the November 2022 elections, when the GOP hopes to take back control of the U.S. House. It has been widely speculated that the 23rd would be targeted by Democrats, not least because Reed, due

The Democrats’ map would chop the district up into neighboring seats in the Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse areas. Reed, whose activity has been largely curtailed and his voice greatly muted since March, made no comment on the proposed redistricting maps Wednesday. The commission members said they were unable to
agree on one set of maps, so Democrats and Republicans each issued their own versions. Commission chairman David Imamura said, “In the spirit of transparency, we wanted the public to have both plans and get comments on both maps. If communities feel they are served in one map or the other, they should say so.” Republicans, however, said Democrats are trying to skew the U.S. Census data that serve as the basis for the district lines to help Democrats capture more seats. “Unfortunately, the commissioners appointed by the legislative majorities have ignored the oath of
office they signed and provided a set of maps that violate the redistricting rules as set forth in the United States Constitution as well as the New York State Constitution,” Republicans on the commission said in a statement. The website for the bipartisan commission crashed Wednesday as it released the two maps. The New York Daily News reported users were unable to access the commission’s site or watch its deliberations for at least an hour after noon on Wednesday. Elsewhere in New York, the Democrats’ map would effectively kill the reelection chances of Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, another

The state Department of Environmental Conservation said the youth-only hunt is scheduled one week prior to the regular pheasant hunting season and enables junior hunters ages 12-15 years old to hunt pheasants with a licensed adult companion. The 2021-22 regular pheasant hunting season opens Oct. 16. “The youth-only pheasant hunting weekend helps
Youth, regular pheasant hunting season coming up in WNY acclimate junior hunters to upland game bird hunting while fewer hunters are afield,” DEC Region 9 acting director Chad Staniszewski said. “This special hunt also provides a great opportunity for experienced hunters to share safe hunting practices and values with the next generation of hunters.” Junior hunters must be accompanied by a licensed adult hunter during the youth pheasant hunt. Accompanying adults are not allowed to possess a firearm or take a pheasant during this special season. In Cattaraugus County, pheasants will be released in the Conewango Swamp Wildlife Management Area, Harwood Lake
Multiple Use Area, the Red House area in Allegany State Park (off Wolf Run and Upper Bay State roads) and the Allegheny Reservoir Wildlife Management Area off Onoville Road. Hunters wanting to hunt pheasants in Allegany State Park are reminded they must pick up a free hunting permit at the administration building near Red House Lake before hunting in the park. Small game hunting is not allowed in Allegany State Park during the regular big game season from Nov. 20-Dec. 12. In Allegany County, pheasants will be released in Keeney Swamp Wildlife Management Area of the town of Birdsall and
Hanging Bog WMA in New Hudson. DEC will release approximately 4,900 adult ringnecked pheasants from its Reynolds Game Farm on WNY lands open to public hunting. A complete statewide list of pheasant release sites is available on DEC’s website. A pheasant chick program provides pheasant hunting opportunities through a partnership between DEC, hunters, 4-H youth and landowners interested in rearing and releasing pheasants. Birds from this program are released before the season opens and disperse widely, presenting a greater challenge for experienced hunters.

The officers, Travis Radomski, Gregory Jacobs and Tage Soderlund,would normally take the course at DOE’s National Training Center (NTC) in Albuquerque, N.M. However, there was no space available for them at the center’s basic security police officer training course this year due to a large number of new recruits from across
the DOE complex requiring training. As a result, the WVDP management team — which consists of representatives from EM, its cleanup contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV), and security subcontractor Paragon Energy — developed a plan for the officers to be trained by instructors from Paragon and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office using facilities of the sheriff’s office. The training plan was approved by the NTC. “We understand the importance and benefit of having trained emergency responders working at West
Valley,” said Bryan Bower, EM WVDP director. “As trained and qualified officers, they now have increased responsibilities to protect the health and safety of our workers and the public. We appreciate their continued commitment and dedication to integrity, vigilance, and helpfulness.” The three officers who completed the course had previously worked as unarmed security officers at WVDP. The course included firearm qualifications, defensive tactics, use of force, first aid and combat casualty care, improvised explosive device and bomb training, vehicle stops, DOE tactical doctrine, physical
fitness and other required courses of study. “Partnering with the WVDP on their security police officer training was an easy decision to make,” said Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb. “We have partnered with them before and welcome future opportunities to work together to protect the site, workers and the public.” The sheriff’s office training coordinator, bomb squad technician and special response team helped conduct the training. "We recognize and celebrate this continued partnership and its successes,” said Anthony Lechanski, acting security manager at

In winter, boots may track snow and deicing solutions like salt into a vehicle’s cabin. In summer, sand from the beach or dirt from hiking trails may find its way in. When cleaning seats, drivers should be mindful of the materials those seats are made of. Cloth seats should be cleaned differently than leather and vinyl, and all seats should be vacuumed prior to cleaning. Consumer Reports notes that leather and vinyl seats are treated with a protective coating that requires gentle cleaning. Begin with a small cloth with a dab of dish or saddle soap, and then apply a leather conditioner to prevent the leather from drying out. When cleaning cloth seats, an upholstery cleaner can be applied to stains, just be sure to follow instructions carefully. Cleaning products are not all the same, and application techniques may vary. A scrub brush can be used to work cleaning solutions into the seats and any lingering moisture can then be wiped away with a microfiber cloth. · Clean the inside of your car windshield. Use an interior glass cleaner to clean the interior windshields and windows. These surfaces can accumulate a significant amount of dirt due to interior vapors and air pollution. Consumer Reports recommends using a glass cleaner that contains alcohol. Interior glass cleaners are designed to prevent streaking and film buildup, which can compromise drivers’ vision. · Take on touchscreens. Modern vehicles have touchscreens
that can quickly accumulate dust and fingerprints. Toyota recommends soaking a clean cloth in lukewarm water and lightly wiping the surface of touch screens. Avoid substances like solvents, alkaline or acidic solutions, which can contribute to staining or discoloration on the screen. Clean car interiors can make driving that much more enjoyable and even more healthy.
