Sheriff Honored

Ellicottville paranormal walks begin Sept. 24

continued from 1 Sheriff Timothy S. Whitcomb was among four GCC alumni to be so honored Sept. 16 for “forever marking their contributions to their communities and the pride they have brought to Genesee Community College.”

A graduate of GCC in 1989, he has served as Cattaraugus County sheriff since first being elected in November 2009, and his law enforcement career has spanned more than three decades.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office includes a road patrol division, the Southern Tier Drug Task Force, K-9 unit, a full Criminal Investigation Bureau, school resource officers, courtroom security and special investigation details, including sex crimes and arson.

There are marine and snowmobile divisions and a special response team, often referred to as SWAT. The Sheriff’s Office handles 911 communications for the entire county while also operating the 150-bed county jail.

Whitcomb earned a master’s degree in counseling education from St. Bonaventure University and is a certified police instructor in the areas of interview

and interrogation, the investigation of sex crimes and the Law Enforcement Response to School Violence.

He is a graduate of the 206th Session of the Federal Bureau Investigation’s National Academy and he recently was certified as a special response team fitness specialist.

Whitcomb has been an adjunct professor for both St. Bonaventure and SUNY Jamestown Community College and has served as

president of the New York State Sheriffs Association and is a past president of the State of New York Police Juvenile Officer Association.

He is also a board member and PTP director for Law Enforcement Operations

at TTMPT (Talk to Me Post Tour), an independent notfor-profit group of retired police officers and police professionals, while he actively speaks nationwide on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

ELLICOTTVILLE — The Ellicottville Historical Society will be hosting five paranormal walks in the village on Fridays beginning Sept. 24.

Participants can begin to gather at 7:30 p.m. at the Ellicottville Gazebo. The walk will begin at 8. The event will be led by John Koerner, an author, professor, historian and founder of Paranormal Walks.

Subsequent walks will be held Oct. 1, 15, 22 and 29.

National Grid warns of latest scam

Casino to present bare knuckle fighting championship SALAMANCA — After the recent rocking return of live entertainment in August, Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino has another blockbuster evening in store.

National Grid customers and law enforcement are reporting utility billing and payment scams across Upstate New York — and the company asks customers to beware and know the signs of a scam.

Imposters claiming to be from National Grid may tell customers that they have past due balances on their utility bills, even promising savings on their next bill. Customers who reported the scams said they were contacted by telephone, email and, in some cases, automated recordings.

The scammers threaten that service will be shut off immediately unless the customer purchases a prepaid debit card in a specific amount, such as a Green Dot card, and provides the caller with the card’s account number, or in the case of business customers, by way of a Western Union money transfer.

Imposters also may ask for a Social Security number and a National Grid account number.

David Bertola, a

spokesman for National Grid, says these calls are not from the company but from scammers looking to obtain personal info and payments.

The scenario can change, but the goal of the scammer remains the same: scare customers into making hasty decisions that often include large payments.

Bertola says National Grid does contact customers with past-due balances by phone to offer payment options, but never demands direct payment through the use of a prepaid debit card and never accepts payment through these cards.

He says scammers have become increasingly

sophisticated in replicating National Grid’s recorded messaging and directions for phone prompts, even spoofing the phone number on caller ID, making it more difficult to differentiate an actual National Grid call from an imposter’s call.

Similar scams have been reported across the U.S. by other utilities.

Customers who believe they have fallen victim to the scam should contact local law enforcement officials immediately. If you are provided a phone number that does not match numbers on the billing statements, it is likely that the call is a scam.

SBA Disaster Relief is Reaching Small Businesses, Homeowners, Renters, and Nonprofits Across Impacted States

WASHINGTON – Isabella Casillas Guzman, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced today that the agency has delivered more than $110 million in disaster rescue funds to small businesses, homeowners, renters, and nonprofit organizations recovering from damages caused by Hurricane Ida earlier this month.

“From the Gulf Coast to the Northeastern states, Hurricane Ida left a wide swath of damage in its wake, and SBA’s missiondriven team is working hard to help affected small businesses and residents get the help they need swiftly and efficiently,” said SBA Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman. “We’re committed to providing federal disaster loans with a customer-centric approach to help businesses,

individuals and communities recover and rebuild.”

As of Sept. 19, the SBA Office of Disaster Assistance (ODA) has approved more than 2,600 low-interest disaster loans delivering a combined $110 million in financial assistance to areas impacted by Hurricane Ida. The SBA is processing applications as quickly as possible and will continue to work to meet the needs of all those affected by this disaster.

Businesses, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations in 49 counties and parishes across Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania are eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans to help repair the physical damage caused

by Hurricane Ida. In addition, businesses and private nonprofit organizations can apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans

Hurricane Ida disaster assistance adds to a growing total this year, as the SBA has now approved more than $267 billion to help residents across all 50 states and five territories recover from COVID-19 and natural disasters, including multiple hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, all of which have been rising in frequency and severity at significant physical, human, and economic costs. According to the U.N. World Meteorological Organization, seven out of 10 of the costliest disasters in the world in the last 50 years happened in the U.S. All of them were hurricanes and include Katrina

in 2005 as well as Harvey, Irma, and Maria in 2017.

The report also found that climate-related disasters increased five times in the last 50 years.

New security cameras in place at Highland Ave. playground

BY RICK MILLER SALAMANCA — Recent security upgrades at the city’s Highland Avenue playground have been completed.

The playground was built in 2018 with funding from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation and in conjunction with KaBOOM, a national nonprofit organization that works with communities to build kiddesigned play spaces.

The citywide effort to complete the security upgrades of the Highland Avenue park finally ended Sept. 3 with the installation of eight high-definition Starlight cameras.

The cameras,

strategically placed around the playground, give a bird’s eye view of the playground from every angle. The cameras and the system, valued at nearly $4,000, were donated to the city by Aurora Electronics.

Those who helped with the installation were the city’s Department of Public Works, Salamanca Board of Public Utilities, Salamanca Youth Bureau and Jim Crosby of Crosby Construction.

A restroom and picnic area were also added to the playground with funding from the Wilson Foundation.

Now a “destination playground” with people coming from all over Western

New York to use the equipment, the new security system will add another safety feature to this widely used recreational area, said Tim Jackson of Aurora Electronics.

The playground features slides, swings and rides.

Leaving nothing to the imagination, there are even musical instruments to play, age-appropriate spaces for toddlers up through teens and adults, who can use the physical agility course.

Salamanca Mayor Sandy Magiera thanked everyone who donated their time, talent and energy to make the new security upgrades a reality.

OLEAN–The final edition of the three StrOleans is set for Friday, October 1.

StrOlean is defined as an event to be held in throughout the Olean area; event goers are able to saunter, amble, wander, walk; and able to enjoy food, music, fine arts, classic cars and fun for all ages. Hours for the StrOlean are 12 to 10 p.m.

A few events have already been scheduled for the October edition: The Out of the Darkness Cattaraugus County Walk and Tour of the Olean Fire Department Central Station. The Walk will start and end at Lincoln Park on October 1 with registration at 5 p.m., and the walk takes place between 6 and 8:30 p.m. To register or for more information, please email almann@ cattco.org.

Olean Fire Department will host its third open house with a static truck display, fire prevention handouts for adults & kids and tour of the station also on October 1st.

Food trucks and restaurants in the area but not located on North Union Street – GOACC encourages you to fill out a food vendor app and come on down to StrOlean. The Olean area is known for its fabulous cuisine and would like many food vendors to participate in StrOlean.

There is an application to fill out, but there is not charge for those existing storefronts even if they are in / out of their store.

GOACC is also encouraging many vendors to come to downtown to display and sell their artisan items, catalog/home party, farm market stands, artwork, jewelry and more as a POP UP Market – a temporary ‘store’ front in downtown Olean.

SALAMANCA — The Salamanca Department of Public Works will begin picking up leaves in the city wards on Monday, Nov. 1.

Leaf collection will be one time only on the dates listed below.

• Ward 1: Monday, Nov. 1 through Wednesday, Nov. 3.

• Ward 2: Thursday, Nov. 4 through Monday, Nov. 8.

• Ward 3: Tuesday, Nov. 9 through Friday, Nov. 12.

• Ward 4: Monday, Nov. 15 through Wednesday, Nov. 17.

• Ward 5: Thursday, Nov. 18 through Monday, Nov. 22.

City officials ask city residents in all wards to rake leaves to the curbside, not out into the road.

By keeping piles out of the roads, storm drains will not plug as quickly and young children will not be tempted to play out in the streets.

Officials also ask to not mix garbage, sticks, branches or pumpkins in with leaf piles as they clog the hose on the leaf machine and will not be picked up.

After the dates listed above, residents must put leaves inside clear yard bags or they will not be picked up.

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that distracted driving was responsible for the deaths of more than 3,100 people in the United States in 2019. The threat of distracted driving is just as significant beyond U.S. borders as well. That includes Canada, where estimates from Transport Canada’s National Collision Database indicate 21 percent of the country’s fatal collisions involved distracted drivers.

Though smartphones are not the lone distraction drivers face, they do pose a significant threat. But smartphones also can help drivers be safer behind the wheel. The following are four apps that drivers can install on their smartphones that were designed to make modern driving safer.

1. SafeDrive: The SafeDrive app can block all the textual apps in a phone, removing a major threat to drivers’ ability to concentrate behind the wheel. Drivers who utilize SafeDrive can still make phone calls, but they won’t be able to receive or send messages.

2. LifeSaver: The LifeSaver app runs silently in the background and then wakes up and locks the phone when a driver begins driving. Parents of young drivers should know that the app’s “Family View” feature can enable them to track their children’s driving and even see when kids are behind the wheel so parents won’t contact them. The app also can alert loved ones when drivers arrive at their destination.

3. TextDrive: This app sends auto response messages to people who try to call or text drivers while they’re behind the wheel. Drivers can reply to messages using voice commands as well.

4. DriveWell: Drivers who want some insight into their driving habits should consider the DriveWell app. The app is

designed to provide drivers with feedback about their driving habits. Drivers can access trip summaries, details on their maneuvers and even track their speeds.

Drivers interested in utilizing technology to become safer drivers can try various apps designed to reduce driver distractions.
