Randolph Fire Company to award scholarships
2021 Summer Youth Employment Program OLEAN–The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services is pleased to announce the completion of another successful Summer Youth Employment Program in which, a record number of youth were served. This summer, Department of Social Services staff assisted 73 area youth from communities across Cattaraugus County. The youth, between the ages of 14 and 20, found jobs in a variety of positions. For many, it was their first employment experience. Beyond gaining employment, Department of Social Services staff provided career mentoring in a variety of areas from resume writing and job interview skills
to personal hygiene and professional conduct in the work place. The Cattaraugus County Department of Social Services dedicated staff administers this federally funded program to recruit, train and place youth with participating employers. This summer, 38 employers participated in the program. The Summer Youth Employment Program has helped thousands of youth who meet eligibility requirements, find employment and sharpen job and job search skills. Nation of Indians, and organized by a group of community volunteers, this year’s festival will run Friday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 3 in Jefferson Street Park and the downtown area. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the festival was canceled in 2020 for safety concerns. Organizers of the annual tradition have been meeting throughout the summer, deciding in early July to go ahead with the festival for 2021. The organizers have discussed what they have planned for the three-day weekend, which is expected to have many things to see and do, both favorites from past years and new to attendees this year. Two exciting bands are scheduled for the two nights of the festival. On Friday night, regional favorites The Porcelain Bus Drivers will perform under the tent
at Jefferson Street Park, 5 to 9 p.m., said Kathi Sarver, one of the organizers. In addition, the carnival rides will be up and running from 4-8 p.m., she said. This is the first time the rides are available on Friday night. The rides will also be available Saturday and Sunday. Sarver said more vendors are signing up every day so they won’t know how many to expect right up until the festival. “We do know we have all our food vendors back,” she added. On Saturday night, former Salamanca-based band The Hootz will perform coming directly from their home base in Nashville, Tenn., playing in the park 5 to 8:30 p.m. “We want to let people know that it’s coming and that we got the bands that are going to be there,” Sarver said. “That’s going to be our big attraction, those two bands.” Other live entertainment in the park includes a DJ, who will play music on and off throughout Saturday and Sunday, as well as the band Happy Days, which will play Saturday afternoon, Sarver said. Also on Saturday, the usual free activities for
kids will be available including the petting zoo, a bounce house and face painting, Sarver said. And for adults, the beer tent is also returning. Sunday’s Grande Parade is shaping up nicely as well, parade organizer Donna Raahauge said, with seven musical units signed up to play. She said several old favorites are back, including the Marilla Fireman’s Band, the Northcoast Brass, 23 Skidoo and the Hitmen. New additions to the parade are the Hamburg Kingsmen Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps, Steel City Alumni Drum Corps from Pittsburgh, Pa., and the Nano Barries from Buffalo, Raahauge said. There is still room for more and organizers are in contact with some other music groups. “Everyone, business or individuals, are welcome to join the parade,” she said. “We are especially looking for some classic cars or car clubs.” Following the parade Sunday, local caricature artist Eric Jones will be back in the park doing pumpkin carving, Sarver said. Jeremy Powell was the first member of the United States military to realize Sept. 11, 2001 was not going to be an ordinary fall day. Powell was a full-time Air Guardsman assigned to the Northeast Air Defense Sector in Rome, New York. The unit's mission was to control the air defense of the northern United States east of the Mississippi. At 8:37 a.m. Powell, who was then a senior radar technician, took a call from a Federal Aviation Administration controller in Boston informing him an airliner may have been hijacked and that the FAA needed a fighter jet to get a visual on the plane. NEADs commanders called the 102nd Fighter Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard and directed them to get two F-15s airborne. At 8:46 a.m. American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. By the end of Sept. 11, 2001 4,265 members of the New York Army and Air National Guard were on state active duty to respond to the attacks. This was in addition to 2,000 Active Duty Guard Soldiers and Airmen who at

Thousands of National Guard Soldiers and Airmen went on to serve in War on Terror work that day. New York Army National Guard Soldiers did not wait for the usual phone call alerting them to report to their unit for a state emergency mission. They saw what was happening on TV, put on their uniforms, and reported to the armory. "The New York Army National Guard was magnificent," said retired Air National Guard Maj. Gen. Thomas Maguire, who was then serving as the Adjutant General. "The Soldiers went to the sound of the guns." When the sun set on Sept. 11, 2001 there were 1,500 New York Army National Guard Soldiers on duty in lower Manhattan assisting the police and fire departments and another 1,500-mostly from units of the 42nd Infantry Divisionwere on hand to assist on Sept. 12. Meanwhile, the New York Air National Guard's 174th Fighter Wing at Hancock Field Air National Guard base immediately launched two F-16 fighters to attempt to intercept United Flight 93 which eventually crashed in Pennsylvania. Majors Gregg Semmel and Tom Owens had been about to take off on a routine air-to-ground gunnery exercise at Fort Drum. They had only 20 millimeter
cannon ammunition loaded and were not sure how they would shoot down a Boeing 757 if they had to. Both men are now twostar generals, serving in key Air Force jobs. By the end of 2001, 12,817 New York National Guard Soldiers and Airmen had been part of the response to the World Trade Center attacks. At one point 6,716 Citizen Soldiers and Airmen were on duty. In the immediate aftermath of the attack, highly trained Pararescue Airmen from the 106th Rescue Wing on Long Island assisted in locating some survivors of the attack in the wreckage and in recovering the bodies of firefighters killed when the building collapsed. Soldiers from New York City units provided support to the "bucket brigades" in clearing the initial debris in the search for survivors. New York Army National Guard logisticians moved equipment and supplies and Stewart Air National Guard Base served as a hub for emergency supplies flowing in from across the country. The New York National Guard's 2nd Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team, which is equipped to detect chemical, radiological and biological hazards, monitored the air
quality at Ground Zero and provided communications support to first responders. New York Army, and eventually Air National Guardsmen, began a day-today routine of assisting in securing the site, and then providing security on New York's bridges and tunnels, train stations and subways. When residents of lower Manhattan were allowed to return to their homes, National Guard Soldiers took them into and out of their buildings. National Guard Soldiers provided fuel to emergency vehicles when asked and aided emergency workers at the site. They directed traffic and helped organize incoming supplies. New York residents said they felt safer having the military on their streets. Guard Soldiers also assisted on Staten Island, at the location where officials sifted through the wreckage of the World Trade Center looking for remains. Members of New York's two state military forces, the New York Naval Militia and the New York Guard also took part in the response. 628 New York Guard members performed administrative and logistics tasks in support of the New York National Guard and 601 members of the New York
Naval Militia also served at some point. Five members of the New York National Guard were among the 2,763 people who perished in the collapse of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. New York Army National Guard 1st Lt. Gerard Baptiste responded as a firefighter, Army National Guard Sgt. Larry Bowman was a security guard in the Twin Towers and died helping evacuate people and Army National Guard Specialist Roshan Ramesh Singh worked in the towers and did not escape. Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Andy Brunn was a firefighter responding in the north tower, while Air National Guard Staff Sgt.

If inclement weather appears unexpectedly, slow down and be sure to leave extra room between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. The automotive analytics firm J.D. Power notes that many experts recommend drivers double the cushion between their vehicles and the ones in front of them when driving in rain, snow, sleet, and other adverse weather conditions. Doing so can help to offset the slower brake time that occurs when driving in bad weather. · Debris: Road debris can include anything from materials that get blown away from roadside work sites to falling rock to tire treads to items that fall off of other vehicles. The suddenness of and the potentially serious consequences of being hit by or hitting debris is why a proactive approach is ideal. Avoid tailgating so you have ample room to maneuver should anything fall into
the road. It’s also important to leave room on the side of your vehicle so you can swerve out of the way. On especially long road trips, share driving duties so whoever is behind the wheel is fresh and alert. Alertness improves reaction time, making it much more likely drivers can avoid debris. The open road has its hazards. But drivers who plan ahead and know what to do when encountering adverse conditions can ensure road trips are memorable for all the right reasons.
