Whitcomb backs NY Sheriffs Assn. call for Cuomo to resign The New York State Sheriffs Association on Aug. 6 called for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to resign, a move supported by Cattaraugus County Sheriff Timothy S. Whitcomb.

“The shocking and credible allegations of serious, and possibly criminal, misconduct by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, as revealed in the recent report from Attorney General James, cause us great concern,” the Sheriffs Association said in a statement.

“One of our most important duties as sheriffs is to support, and seek justice for, victims of sexual harassment and assault. We know firsthand how difficult it is for such victims to come forward in a normal case.”

The association’s statement said “it is hard for us to imagine how difficult it was for Gov. Cuomo’s victims to speak out against one of the

The sheriffs also encouraged the Assembly to “put into concrete action its oftprofessed concern for victims of sexual harassment and assault.”

MEANWHILE, in a joint statement released Aug. 6, 41 county Democratic Party chairs called on Cuomo to “immediately resign.”

The Times Union of Albany reported that the statement came less than 48 hours after the party’s state chairman, Jay Jacobs, made the same call. ”We support President Biden and all our elected officials in their call for Gov. Cuomo to resign,” the statement says. “We have individually called for his res-

ignation, and now we do so with one voice. We thank him for his years of service to the great state of New York, which we all know he holds dear, but demand that he immediately step down. It’s time to move on.

Cuomo has spent the week bunkered down as the state Assembly’s Judiciary Committee has announced it will proceed to wrap up its broad impeachment inquiry and potentially proceed with a formal impeachment proceeding that could see Cuomo removed from office at least temporarily as a trial convenes in the state Senate with that chamber’s lawmakers and the judges of the state Court of Appeals sitting as jurors.

No prominent Democratic voices — in New York or around the nation — have rallied to Cuomo’s side since the release of the report.

“Gov. Cuomo hypocritically championed the rights of women to be free of sexual harassment in the workplace, while violating those very rights in the most gross manner. He loudly called for the immediate ‘canceling’ of others accused of similar acts — often less credibly accused — and yet he demands that we ‘let the process play out’ for himself.

The sheriffs association said Cuomo should “do the right thing” and resign now to spare his victims and the citizens of this state a protracted and public re-telling of the incidents.

“If the governor does not promptly resign, we call upon the Assembly to do its duty and promptly impeach him,” the association said.

Cattaraugus County Fair had record 100,000 paid attendance

BY RICK MILLER LITTLE VALLEY — The 178th Cattaraugus County Fair made up for lost time this past week.

After a year’s hiatus, the fair’s paid attendance was up by about 25% over 2019 figures to more than 100,000 for seven days, Cattaraugus County Agricultural Society Treasurer Kristina Golden said.

“Things looked uncertain for a while and we got a late start, but we pulled it off,” said John Charlesworth, County Agricultural Society president, in describing this year’s fair.

“Great weather, tremendous, record-breaking crowds and lots of happy fair visitors made for a terrific week,” Charlesworth said. “We’re

still crunching the numbers, but by late Friday afternoon, we had surpassed our paid attendance record — and we still had Saturday to go.”

Charlesworth said grandstand shows proved popular again this year, with Monday night’s demolition derby, both monster truck shows and Saturday night’s big-rig truck pull selling out more than 3,000 seats on the grandstand as well as the bleachers.

All other shows, from country music featuring Jordan Davis/Jake Hoot and Justin Moore/The Hootz on consecutive days to Broken B Rodeo and Freebird, a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, were also well-attended.

Charlesworth said livestock, dairy and horse department superintendents report

entries remain high as in previous years. Entrants came from all over Cattaraugus County, as well as neighboring counties in Western New York and northern Pennsylvania. The 4-H and Domestic departments were well represented, showcasing the talents folks have worked on since the last county fair two years ago.

The 4-H Market Animal Auction also broke records, bringing in almost $250,000 in bidding that were conducted both in person and online.

There were about 180 animals in the auction that began at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Eric Clayson, chairman of the 4-H Livestock Committee, said.

“It was our best auction ever,” he said.

According to 4-H youth

development educator Abby Luzier, “The sale was a huge success for the kids. In total we had 186 lots (24 beef steers, eight dairy steers, seven goats, 21 lambs, 35 chicken pairs, 26 turkeys and 65 hogs in the auction by Peterson Auction that brought in bids of $224,134.25.

“Peterson Auction was amazing to work with throughout the whole process and our first webcast auction — both in person and online simultaneously — was a hit,” Luzier said. “I am extremely thankful for them as well as all of our volunteers who helped pull this together for the kids.”

ders/buyers as well. You could feel the excitement and anticipation the whole time and it was really fun to be a part of — watching the kids show off their projects they’ve worked hard on over the past year or more with their steers.

Following COVID protocol, extra grounds help was hired to disinfect several times daily. All buildings, permanent food stands and most vendors were well equipped with hand sanitizer. There were 9,000 individual sanitizers, provided by the county, that were distributed.

Mask wearing was voluntary and fair officials did not ask for proof of vaccination.

Over two dozen vaccines were administered by the health department in their spot under the grandstand.

“This year continues to have its challenges, but the health and safety of our visitors has always been a top priority and this year was no different,” Charlesworth said.

Charlesworth and the fair’s board of directors thanked all those who visited, worked, volunteered, exhibited and otherwise enjoyed the fair this year.

“It’s pretty remarkable that on just 34 acres in the heart of the county, you can enjoy the best in agricultural achievements, prime music and motorsports entertainment and a broad array of family fun all in a span of seven days in early August,” Charlesworth said.

Next year’s fair is tentatively set for July 31 through Aug. 6, 2022.

An Antidote For Shyness

BY ROBERT L. HEICHBERGER You know, I think I have been shy most of my life.

As a young child, it was not easy for me to interact with older folks. In fact, it was not really easy to interact with strangers, even those of my own age. Perhaps, it had something to do with the fact that I was farm boy in rural country- side and opportunities to relate with “new comers” were few. In fact, experiences with a broad range of social activities were few, other than with family and neighboring youngsters. And thus, in my small world, interactions with neighboring folks was a comfortable setting during the days of my early youth. And so, life moved on.

It was January, and I completed eighth grade onehalf year early. This rather timid farm boy went from a small rural one-room school house to the large Central High School nearly twenty miles from my home. I entered ninth grade in the middle of the school year.

Most of the other students were “Village youngsters,” who had “always been there” as a group. Student social groups had already been well established.

When I entered in January, the students were half way through their ninth grade studies. I started the ninth grade with the hope of catching up to the others. Right there, as I saw it, made me different from the others.

You know, I saw myself as a farm kid who just did not quite belong. More or less like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. I was a quiet student, just trying

not to make any waves or maybe hoping not to be noticed. Someone has said, “It’s easy to mistake shyness for coldness, and silence for indifference.” How true that can be. The days turned into weeks, and being shy was no advantage. I so wanted to be accepted by the others.

By and by, I perceived that most of the other students were also searching for continuing acceptance by their peers. In that regard, I discovered, I really was not alone.

Through these early experiences I found that fundamentally, all of us are social creatures. Our group community may be small, but “belonging” seems to be what matters. You know, when in the company of others, our thoughts seem to construct a mental map. We construct in our thoughts, what we think other people may be thinking of us. And, by so doing, we focus... in our minds... the direct spotlight on ourselves. You know, I believe that people react to what they believe to be a reality.

I believe the fundamental cause of shyness rests on where we place our focus. If our focus is on the reactions we think we produce in others about ourselves, it can become over powering. In

fact, we risk over-analyzing every thought, word, and deed of our own doing, and thereby, we almost disable ourselves by painful selfawareness. With that being the focus, shyness takes over and can become a stifling impediment.

True, I have been a shy person most all of my life.

However, I have found, when one has a real concern for others, and we place our prime focus on others and their needs, we thus, ignore our own concern about how others may view us. We really find genuine momentum for a warm and giving relationship for and with others. I call this concern for others “compassion”.

Therefore, compassion becomes the paramount emotion about what one deeply feels. It is with that focus, that the spotlight on selfawareness becomes sharply diminished, and shyness begins to fade into oblivion.

Ah yes, it is the needs of others, that really count. I have found THIS works every time: “do unto others, what you would have others do unto you.”

Andrea was a graduate of Salamanca High School, Class of 2006, where she was the class Valedictorian.

While at Salamanca, Andrea a member of the National, Science and Spanish Honor Societies, played 5 years of Varsity Soccer, played JV and Varsity Basketball, was on the regional travel league soccer team, Varsity Track, was in the Drama Club, the Concert Band, the NYSSMA Woman’s Chorus, Jazz Band, and The American Music Abroad European Honor Choir.

Andrea performed with many local and regional theater companies, including Chautauqua Opera. Andrea was a National Anthem vocalist with her sister Brittney, for the Buffalo Bills and St. Bonaventure University Basketball Program. Andrea was a Channel 7 Student/Athlete of the Month, the Regional Exchange Club Student of the Year, and performed with Enchante Cabaret Dinner Theater.

Recently Andrea was the recipient of the Peggy R. Williams Presidential award for academic excellence and was a Dean’s List scholar. Andrea traveled with the Ithaca College department of Health Sciences and Human Performance, to Beijing, China to study physical therapy and rehabilitative services.

She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Salamanca and was a worship team leader and musician at The Vineyard Church of Ithaca.

Andrea and her teammates petitioned the BOE for the creation of the first-ever all

female Varsity SHS Soccer Team in 2001. Andrea played Varsity for SHS from grades 7 – 12. Prior to 2001, she played on the co-ed varsity team.

She was captain grades 11 and 12. Varsity MVP- grades 11 and 12, Coaches Award for leadership grades 10, 11, 12. CCIAC Division I AllStar Honorable Mention in 2003, CCIAC Division II All-Star in 2004. League Officials Sportsmanship Award Senior year- 2006. ScholarAthlete Every season. Channel 7 Scholar-Athlete of the month in 2005. Recipient of The Timothy Ross Memorial Award for Outstanding Female Soccer Athlete in 2006.

Following graduation at SHS, Andrea attended Ithaca College, where she played on the Woman’s Club travel soccer team, and participated in the IC intramural indoor soccer program in the off-season.

Soccer was Andrea’s passion.

It is with honor, that the 2021 Salamanca Girls Soccer Team holds their eighth Varsity Soccer Tournament in memory of Andrea Morton.

Dick Rivers, executive director of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County, said the tour gives legislators an opportunity to see what 4-H members are doing across the county fair.

Carrie Busekist, a 4-H educator, said that most 4-H’ers are not just showing one animal during the fair. “They are all across the fair showing different animals.”

One young exhibitor who had been showing beef cattle for the past six years, said she had four different registered Angus beef cattle for different classes — one a 1,400-pound market class steer.

Modern automobiles are more technologically advanced than ever before. That tech isn’t just making driving more comfortable and convenient, but also more safe.

In a recent analysis of motor vehicle accidents, researchers at the International Institute for Highway Safety found that vehicles with blind spot and lane departure warning systems were involved in 11 percent fewer sideswipes and head-on crashes than cars that did not feature such systems. that the number of automobile crashes in the United States could be decreased by 85,000 each year if every vehicle were outfitted with a lane departure warning system.

Driver assistance systems have made driving safer for millions of people across the globe, but one demographic may need some extra help adapting to modern vehicles, and may even need a little extra encouragement to utilize tech that can keep them safe behind the wheel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that, in 2018, the United States was home to 45 million licensed drivers aged 65 and over. That marks a 60 percent increase since 2000. Though seniors’ perceived unwillingness or inability to utilize modern technology is often overstated, some aging drivers may need a little extra help as they try to learn how to use assistance technologies in their vehicles. · Learn the tech yourself. Assistance technologies are not all one and the same. Vehicle manufacturers have their own systems and there can be a learning curve when adapting to a new one. If you aspire to teach a senior how to utilize the assistance technologies in his or her vehicle, first learn the tech on your own. If both you and your aging friend or family member own a Subaru, chances are you already know how to use the tech in your loved one’s vehicle. If you drive cars made by different manufacturers, visit the dealership where your loved one bought his or her car and ask for a quick tutorial on all the safety features in the vehicle. Salesman demonstrate these features every day, so it shouldn’t take long for them to show you the ropes. · Be patient. Each person adapts to a new technology at his or her own pace. It’s important to remain patient when teaching aging drivers how to use the tech in their vehicles. Old habits die hard, and while some drivers may quickly adapt to tech like backup cameras, others may not be so quick to abandon driving techniques they’ve been safely using for decades. Stay the course, remain patient and allow senior drivers to adapt at their own pace. · Teach one tech at a time. It can be overwhelming for drivers of all ages to adapt overnight to all the tech in their new vehicles.

When teaching senior drivers how to utilize various driver as-

sistance technologies, take it one tech at a time. When coupled with your patience, this approach can help seniors avoid being overwhelmed and increases the likelihood that they will embrace the tech in their vehicles.

Many senior drivers utilize driver assistance technologies every day. A patient and methodical approach to showing seniors how their vehicles can help them stay safe behind the wheel can be a road map to helping seniors adapt to life in modern vehicles.
