Salamanca schools launch distance learning STEM academy SALAMANCA — Officials at Salamanca High School are busy preparing for a new virtual STEM academy, anticipated to launch during the 2021-22 school year. Beginning in the fall, students will have the opportunity to enroll in Project SAMI, a comprehensive distance-learning STEM program where students may study one of eight high-impact, college majors in drone inspections, engineering technology and cybersecurity. “Corporate farming, utility work and advanced manufacturing make up some of the high-impact employers in our region,” said Aaron Straus, STEAM Coordinator. “This highlights a significant skills gap that must be addressed to meet expected industry demand.” The new distance learning initiative is designed to bridge the gap between K-12 education, college coursework and job readiness so students can be more prepared to enter jobs after high school. Straus said the district has trade students that receive career and technical education training through BOCES, but on the other side of the spectrum, they have advanced STEM track students, who are taking AP and college-credit courses at Salamanca and anticipate moving on to a university program in engineering or pre-medical science. “Somewhere, mixed or between are a group of students who may or may not go to college but need that extra-workforce training so that they may secure a gainful career upon exit from our high school,” he said. Whether students choose to take advanced courses at their base school, attend BOCES or enroll in a college program, school officials said this program will advance the district’s strategic plan to prioritize PK-12 life skills, responsibility and critical thinking. “For months, before the
pandemic and throughout the pandemic, our instructional work continued,” said district superintendent Robert Breidenstein. “We are excited to share this project with the community and even more excited to begin the work in year two of our plan.” Currently, the district uses a WozEd as the K-12 STEM pipeline curriculum, where students engage in hands-on activities during a STEM Specials class. Students take technology classes at the middle school level to learn more about different career paths, including engineering, coding, mobile development and drones. Seventh and Eighth graders have the opportunity to visit scientific research facilities or manufacturing facilities, officials said. They can also attend STEM summer school camps to gather their career interests further. However, in the wake of the pandemic, where distance learning technology became at the forefront of educational discussion, faculty and staff looked for creative ways to continue STEM instruction through remote applications. “At the time our schools began coping with the reality that remote education might be here to stay, the district decided to change its tactics on how and what students would learn. A portion of that plan involved heavy investment distance learning tools,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mark Beehler said. “The beauty of the Project SAMI
program model is that it can be implemented in a remote or conventional setting and that students have a hand in determining which competencies they want to tackle when, and how quickly they choose to do so.” The SAMI curriculum is divided into several modules that students are expected to master. Each term, students are given a set of self-paced online lesson activities, which they can work through as fast as they want. Once they complete one bunch, students will be rolled out into the next level of competencies. According to educational technologist Susan Schnaufer, what makes Project SAMI stand out from other remote learning solutions districts have used in the past, is its unique interface, tools and output focus. “A learning management system is the virtual learning environment that can administer both time-bound courses as well as self-paced learning options such as competencybased Project SAMI,” said Schnaufer. “Our program Salamanca STEM continued on .... page 4

We thank Sergeant Lockwood’s family, and hope this bridge will help ease the pain of his loss and preserve his memory for generations to come.” Upon returning home, Lockwood graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and worked as an engineer until his death in 2018, leaving behind his wife Patricia, two daughters and four grandchildren. “Naming this bridge in Sergeant Lockwood’s honor commemorates his courageous service to our country and reminds us of the immense contributions America’s veterans have made for us all,” Borrello said. “For generations to come, the Sergeant David Lockwood Memorial Bridge will stand as a testament to his heroism and commitment to our great nation. “I want to thank Assemblyman Giglio for sponsoring this legislation in the Assembly and urge Governor Cuomo to sign the bill marking this designation as soon as possible.”
CCA seeking Community Sector board members SALAMANCA — Connecting Communities in Action (CCA) helps build resilient communities by helping people achieve economic, physical and emotional security. The board of directors is looking for residents of the community to join the Community Sector of the board. The Community Sector must represent at least one-third of the board and must be community residents who are, or who represent, economically disadvantaged (low-income) and reside in Cattaraugus County. Candidates listed in Cattaraugus County primaries June 22 BY RICK MILLER Democratic and Republican primary voting will be from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., June 22 in Cattaraugus County, according to Board of Elections Commissioners Cortney Spittler and Kevin Burleson. Absentee ballots are widely available under COVID-19 protocols. There is an application form on the Cattaraugus County Board of Elections website — www.cattco.org — or on the New York State Board of Elections website. Voters can request an absentee ballot up until the day before the election. Two towns — Dayton and Freedom — have primaries for supervisor and five towns — Ashford, Dayton, East Otto, Freedom and Portville — have highway superintendent primaries. A rundown of town primaries follows: Ashford Republicans Shawn M. Lafferty and Keith R. Butcher are vying for a two year vacancy as highway superintendent. Butcher was appointed to the post after the resignation of Tim Engels in December 2020. Butcher will also appear on the Conservative line. There is no Democratic candidate. Dayton In Dayton, Supervisor Angie M. Mardino-Miller and Mark A. Smith are vying for the Republican nomination for a twoyear term as supervisor. Mardino-Miller is also running on the Conservative Party line. There is no Democratic candidate. Town Clerk Ruth V. Bennett is being challenged in a Republican primary
for a two-year term by Jacqueline M. MacDonald. There is no Democratic candidate. Three candidates are running for two councilman seats for four-year terms in the Republican primary. They are incumbent Christine M. Rupp, David J. Kohler and Donald L. Bartlett Jr. Rupp is also in the Conservative line in the November election. Highway Superintendent Thomas J. Chupa is being challenged in the Republican primary by former highway superintendent Brian J. Taber. Chupa is running on the Conservative line in November. East Otto Highway Superintendent Thomas M. Benz is being challenged in a Republican primary by Michael D. Grey for a four-year term as highway superintendent. Benz is also running on the Democratic and Conservative lines. Farmersville There are four candidates in the Republican primary for two councilmen seats with four-year terms on the Farmersville Town Board. They are: incumbent Pamela J. Tilton, Douglas M. Thompson, Dale E. Scurr and James P. Karaszewski. Tilton and Scurr are also on the Democratic line in November and Karaszewski and Thompson will be on the Conservative Party line. Freedom Two Freedom town councilmen — on opposite sides of the local wind turbine controversy — are running in the Republican primary for town supervisor to succeed Randy Lester, who did not seek re-election. It is for a four-year term. Lester is
running for a councilman’s seat in November. Councilman Dustin Bliss, who is in favor of the Alle-Catt Wind Farm project and has turbine leases on his property, is also running on the Democratic line in November, while Councilman Geoffrey Milks is also on the Conservative line. Also in Freedom, Highway Superintendent James B. Haggerty is being challenged in a Republican primary by Russell G. Rhoads for the four-year post. Haggerty is also on the Democratic line in November. Little Valley There are three candidates in the Republican primary for two seats for a four-year term on the Little Valley Town Board. The candidates are inclubent Holly R. Urbanski, Timothy J. Zimbardi and Jerry A. Titus II. Urbanski and Titus are also on the Conservative line in November. Portville Highway Superintendent Todd J. Shaw is being challenged by Ryan W. Hatch in a Republican primary for a four-year term as highway superintendent. Shaw is also listed on the independent Right To Work Party in November.

Additionally, it incorporates leveled, handson equipment shipped directly to the student’s home and unique industry-driven simulators, where students can practice the skill on a virtual equipment piece before using the real thing.” The high school structured the program as an unscheduled elective class that students can work on 40 minutes a day during study hall, lunch or after school hours, hand-in-hand with their liberal art coursework. High School Principal Christopher Siebert said project faculty will serve as a “content resource” for questions and program guidance rather than as front-end instructional facilitators. “We have specialized faculty there for academic and content support,” he offers. “If students are stuck on a question or project, they can reach out to their faculty member at any time and expect a response within 24 hours.” During their senior year, students will have the opportunity to create an individual Project SAMI capstone project relevant to the area needs and their course of study and receive a voucher for taking one or more industry-standard tests that verify their occupational and skill capacity. “The capstone experience allows seniors who exit the

What is octane and should it affect drivers’ decisions at the pump? Anyone who has ever driven their vehicles into a filling station is no doubt familiar with the word “octane.” But few drivers may know what octane refers to and how it might affect their vehicles. According to Kelley Blue Book®, octane is a colorless component that boils at high temperatures. Octane is added to fuels, including gasoline used in vehicles,

The higher the octane rating, which is a measure of a fuel’s ability to resist “knocking” or “pinging,” the less likely the fuel is going to explode unexpectedly. In fact, KBB notes that gasoline with a high octane rating can withstand more compression than gas with a low octane rating. So what does this mean for the average driver when he or she arrives at the pump and has to choose between 87, 89 or 93 octane gasoline? Likely very little. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that most gasoline vehicles are designed to run on 87 octane gasoline. However, some vehicles are still designed to run on higher octane fuel, so drivers should always consult their owners’ manuals to determine which octane is best for their vehicles. Using a lower octane fuel than the one mentioned by the vehicle manufacturer can damage the engine over time. The DOE even notes that using a fuel with an octane rating other than the one recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may actually void the warranty. That gives drivers even greater incentive to consult their owner’s manuals before filling up for the first time. Drivers may wonder if using a higher octane fuel than the one recommended by their car’s manufacturer will improve performance. And in certain instances, it might. The DOE notes that higher octane fuel may improve performance and gas mileage and reduce carbon emissions when towing or carrying heavy loads. How-
ever, there’s typically no such benefit when driving in normal conditions. Drivers encounter octane anytime they visit a filling station. Learning more about octane and what it does for vehicles can help drivers become more informed motorists.
