DEC Reminds Water Recreationists to Clean, Drain, and Dry Watercraft and Equipment As this year’s boating season officially kicks off, Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos today reminded water recreationists to do their part in protecting New York’s waters from aquatic invasive species (AIS) by remembering to clean, drain, and dry watercra and equipment. Last year, boater traffic increased by nearly 20 percent at some launches and boat stewards counted more than 390,000 boats at launches across the state, a significant increase from the 276,515 watercra counted in 2019. DEC anticipates more boaters will hit the water this season and with them an increased risk of introducing AIS to New York’s waters. Taking proactive steps such as cleaning off fi shing tackle, removing aquatic vegetation from rudders, disinfecting boat hulls and water compartments, and properly disposing of bait, significantly reduces that risk. “Aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels, spiny waterflea, hydrilla, and others can be easily transported from one waterbody to another on boats, trailers, and fishing equipment,” said Commissioner Seggos. “Protecting New York’s waters is a high priority for DEC. Our lakes and ponds are invaluable in providing wildlife habitat, sustaining our state’s fisheries and fishing industry, and offering opportunities for recreation.” Over the last few years, DEC has expanded its boat steward coverage through the Watercra Inspection Stewardship Program, reaching additional recreationists with the Clean, Drain, Dry message. Boat stewards demonstrate how
to conduct boat and trailer inspections prior to launching into a new waterbody and provide basic facts about AIS. In 2020, DEC’s boat stewards talked with more than 30,000 boaters who were unfamiliar with the boat steward program. These stewards also intercepted more than 19,000 AIS on boats and equipment, including hydrilla, which was removed from boats headed into Lake Champlain and Lake Ontario. Existing hydrilla infestations in Cayuga, Erie, Tioga, Tompkins, and Westchester counties are currently costing New Yorkers more than one million dollars a year in control and mitigation. “Last fall we opened the new boat launch at Otisco Lake. We are thrilled that this will be one of more than 200 locations participating in the New York State Watercra Inspection Steward Program,” said Ma hew Marko, DEC
Region 7 Director. “We ask that all recreationists clean, drain, and dry their watercra and equipment to help protect New York’s waters.” “The Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) is looking forward to providing education and outreach at the new Otisco Lake launch and hopes to reach more new boaters,” said Hilary Mosher, Coordinator, Finger Lakes PRISM. Ellicottville bar to host COVID-19 vaccine clinic Friday
BY RICK MILLER ELLICOTTVILLE — The Cattaraugus County Health Department will host a COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Finnerty’s Tap Room on June 11. The vaccine clinic being held is to meet the vaccine requirement for the Summer Music Festival hosted at Holiday Valley Resort July 2-4, said Dr. Kevin D. Williams, public
health director. The Johnson and Johnson vaccine being administered at this clinic requires only a single dose. It will be provided from 9 a.m. to noon. Individuals receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after administration, Watkins said. Those individuals 18 years old and older who
reside, work, or study in New York State are eligible to register for the vaccine. Leon honors the fallen on Memorial Day
LEON — The township of Leon was honored to have one of their own, Major Lyle R. Milliman, deliver the annual Memorial Day speech. A West Point graduate, Major Milliman recently assumed the role of US Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo Deputy District Commander. Along with numerous leadership courses, Major Milliman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science Degree in Engineering Management. In addition to his degrees, he also holds a professional Engineer License in the state of Missouri and certification as a Project Management Professional. Major Milliman’s operational deployments include Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2007, and Operation Enduring Freedom, 201112. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Bronze de Fleury Medal, the Combat Action Badge and the Army Air Assault

Meals on Wheels volunteers needed in Salamanca SALAMANCA — Aging officials in Cattaraugus County are urging volunteers to sign up to deliver for Meals on Wheels. The Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging’s Senior Wellness and Nutrition Program has an immediate need for volunteers to deliver meals in the Salamanca area as some of the current volunteers are taking well-deserved time off this summer.
Meals are delivered before noon Monday through Friday. Most volunteers deliver about 16 meals once a week and it takes approximately one hour to complete a route. Nutritious, well-balanced meals provided by Meals on Wheels can improve or maintain the current health status of homebound recipients, possibly even delaying or preventing nursing home placement. The

Little Valley library summer reading program to begin July 6 LITTLE VALLEY — The Memorial Library of Little Valley will begin holding its summer reading program beginning July 6. For the children’s program, ages 5 to 12, and the teen program, ages 13 to 17, it will be a “Grab and Go” concept. Each child signed up for summer reading will receive a bag with age, interest and reading-level appropriate books, a craft, coloring sheet, activity sheet and a snack. The first bag will include the reading logs and instruction on how to keep track of how many books they read and minutes read. Bags will be available Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parents pick them up while dropping off the previous weeks’ bag. Every time a bag is picked up for a child, their name is put in a drawing, and every Friday the library staff will draw and give away a prize for participation.
For the adult program, it will be a “Blind Date with a Book” concept. Each adult book will be wrapped in a brown paper bag and labeled with genre and barcode. The books will have a slip inside for comments and recommendations. Each book taken out will give the patron one entry in a weekly drawing on Friday with a prize. Also during the month of July, there will be one event each week. July 6, 1 p.m., Mager Mountain owner Sue Mager will be bringing an alpaca to the library for petting. John and Gayle Rembold will also be bringing their golden retriever Etta for show. A craft will be done and coloring pages of alpacas will be handed out. Sign-up by Friday, July 2. July 16, 2 p.m., Bicycle Rodeo with the Cattaraugus-Little Valley SRO Officer in the parking
lot. They will set up a track, inspect bicycles and helmets and give good bicycling advice. Sign-up by Monday, July 12. Kids must bring their own bicycles and helmets. July 22, 1 p.m., Fire Safety class and tour of the fire hall given by Karen Taft. Sign-up by Monday, July 19. July 30, 2 p.m., Outdoor games, Frisbee golf, hopscotch, water balloons and chalk drawings. There will be prizes given away and ice cream sundaes to celebrate the end of the summer reading program. When behind the wheel with a .05 BAC, drivers can expect reduced coordination, reduced ability to track moving objects, difficulty steering, and a reduced response to emergency driving situations. · .08: At .08, muscle coordination becomes poor, affecting balance, speech, vision, reaction time, and hearing. People with a BAC of .08 will find it hard to detect danger and their judgment, self-control, reasoning, and memory will be impaired. Driving with a .08 BAC affects concentration, impairs perception and reduces drivers’ ability to capably processs information, including detecting other drivers’ signals. Shortterm memory loss also is one of the predictable effects of driving with a .08 BAC. · .10: People experience a clear deterioration of their reaction time and control when their BAC reaches .10. Slurred speech, slowed thinking and poor coordination are some additional effects of a BAC of .10. When driving with a BAC of .10, drivers have a reduced ability to maintain lane position and brake appropriately. · .15: A .15 BAC is nearly twice the legal limit in many areas. People with such a high BAC will have considerably less muscle control than normal and a major loss of balance. Drivers
with a .15 BAC experience substantial impairment when trying to control their vehicles and will experience difficulty paying attention to the task of driving. Drivers also will struggle to process necessary visual and auditory information. Alcohol begins to impair people’s motor skills and judgment even when consumed in small amounts.
