Randolph Melioristic Theatre bringing accessible arts to youth, community BY DEB EVERTS RANDOLPH — A theater group founded by students at Randolph Central School back in 1997 is making a comeback to bring accessible arts to youth and their community. Members of the Randolph Melioristic Theatre (RMT) are inviting as many students as possible to join their group and create their own version of Shakespeare’s sonnets via ZOOM. Students age 6 to 21 from the Randolph, Salamanca, Little Valley and Cattaraugus areas are welcome. Spokesperson Brandi Remington is keeping the production organized online. Director of Communication and Engagement for United Way of Tompkins County, she said RMT was a completely student run and led drama club that lasted through a handful of generations. Remington said they were in high school and then college at the time, and no adults were ever really involved. “They were all four or five years older than me. As they got older, their siblings and ‘rag-tag’ friends kind of took over,” she said of the original members. “I was part of that second wave about 2001.” According to the RMT Facebook page, the theater group was founded by students who were looking for more theater opportunities. The local Arts and Crafts Festival had dance and music performances, but no theater. So they went to the planners, made their pitch and were given a performance slot on a stretch of street. They gathered up a cohort of eight students, some makeshift props, a pile of tights and set about rehearsing. On the morning of June 7, they hauled some platforms into the street and put on a production of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” To their surprise, some people even sat to watch it. Some actually asked when they were performing again and they figured they should do it again. They started working on a production of “Hamlet” for later that summer. Over the next 10 years, the group produced plays every summer, mostly Shakespeare. They performed anywhere that would have them and even took their shows on the road to Jamestown and Rochester. Members cycled in and out, but the spirit remained the same — a theater group run by young people and committed to bringing accessible arts to their community. MORE THAN 20 years later, members of RMT have reunited to try inspiring a new generation of young

artists to explore their passion, foster trust and creativity and build a better community. The group has created a YouTube channel, a Facebook page and is currently creating short “webisodes” of Shakespeare’s sonnets. Remington said the idea occurred fairly recently when a former member posted a picture on Facebook of their last performance from around 2006 and commented on how much fun those days were. When she saw the post, Remington said she reached out saying, “Hey, wouldn’t it be fun to do something virtual since ZOOM is a thing now and we are all using it? We could actually get together online and to try to produce something.” She didn’t think anyone would be really interested but everyone said it was a great idea. “Because we are all adults now, we don’t know how to play anymore, so it was one of those things. We needed something fun for ourselves,” she said. “A lot of us are parents now and, with coronavirus, it’s been stressful. We wanted to do something for ourselves and kind of reconnect and have some fun.” Remington said they also wanted to give back to the community where they grew up. RMT was important to their lives as kids and coming into young adulthood discovering who they were, she said. “We started thinking about how we could give back and it came down to why don’t we just try to reestablish RMT for the community, and try to bring it to life for the next generation,” she said. Remington said the group is set to launch their first set of Facebook webisodes April 23, which is Shakespeare’s birthday, to introduce people to what we are doing. She said it’s called “Sonnet Remix” because they’ve taken the sonnets and turned them into short scenes with two or three actors. “That’s what we would like to do with the students

in the next phase,” she said. “They get to choose the sonnet and break it down however they want to break it down to create their own scene from it. We will be there to support and mentor them as much as they need, but Randolph Melioristic Theatre has always been about youth just doing it without adults. If they don’t need us, they don’t need us, but we can help produce it and get it up for them for viewing.” Remington said the first wave is performed by former members of RMT, and they already have a second wave of webisodes created. They’re hoping to have new videos to share on Facebook every two to three months. She said both the rehearsals and productions will be done virtually online via ZOOM and posted on facebook.com/ RandolphMelioristic. There is no need to audition. Any student who is interested can reach out to RMT on Facebook or email them at randolphmelioristic@gmail. com. RMT also wants to provide financial support that will allow youth living in the Randolph area to actively take part in the arts. The group is accepting donations and has set up the Randolph Melioristic Theatre’s Young Artist Fund through Patreon at patreon.com/ randolphmelioristic.

Holiday Valley donates to Ellicottville area groups

Photo submitted Despite a winter season without fundraising events, Holiday Valley made substantial donations to area youth programs and the Ellicottville Alley Katz on April 7. “We felt it was important to support the summer youth programs in our area as many will be resuming this summer,” said Dennis Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley president and general manager. “And the Alley Katz help make the village of Ellicottville so welcoming to our visitors and residents with the beautiful flower planters and baskets they prepare and maintain.” Pictured (from left): Niki Klein donates to Barb Hirst of the Ellicottville Alley Katz; Dennis Eshbaugh donates to Lindsey Coburn for the Ellicottville Youth Soccer Program; Jake Swan, representing Great Valley Youth Program, accepts a check from Kate Eshbaugh; David Trathen donates a check to Little League Football to Todd Palmatier; Palmatier also accepts a check from Steve Crowley for Little League Baseball.

CA BOCES partners with RIT for animation program School districts in the Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES region will soon see world-class animations gracing their hallways, school buses, gyms and theaters. Through a new partnership with Rochester Institute of Technology’s MAGIC Spell Studios, the Information Technology Department at BOCES is preparing to offer custom animation offerings to component school districts in the region.Michael Graf, BOCES information technology director, said that the new opportunity will be a forward-looking opportunity for school districts.“While we already have a professional animator on our team, our new partnership with MAGIC Spell Studios has allowed us the opportunity to work with a professionalgrade studio team in offering animation on a broader scale to our component districts at a reasonable price through existing CoSer structures,” he said.BOCES superintendent Scott Payne said he believes the partnership will be advantageous to both the BOCES organization and component school d i s t r i c t s . “Cu s t o m i ze d

animation options like this will allow our educators, both in BOCES classrooms and in our component districts, to use even more creativity when working to engage students,” he added. “I am excited to see this program offered in our region.”MAGIC Spell Studios, LLC, is the entrepreneurial and commercial heart of MAGIC at RIT. Encompassing a fully functional film sound stage, sound mix and color correction post-production studios, a 4K Dolby Atmos theater and several working media laboratories, MAGIC Spell Studios and their student and faculty talent is ready and available to work on animation and media projects through this new partnership with BOCES.BOCES is currently running pilots with two regional school districts to finalize programming and will soon announce program details to all component school districts. Potential projects include animated avatars of administrators and mascots, character education animated story lines and 2D/3D creations for use in sensory rooms and hallways.Graf said that he is also excited for what this type of programming can

do to boost this career field in the region.“Aside from providing this high-level of affordable programming to our districts to help engage students, we have partnered with a world class university and production team to blend together our current technology offerings and support with animation and whatever new technology is around the corner,” he said. “The hope beyond this is to interest students in video, animation and create a strong presence in our region for this field that might typically land in an urban setting.”Graf also mentioned that he is impressed by the caliber of programming and support at RIT. “The team at MAGIC has been extremely helpful and engaged in creating programming that benefits their students professionally and also creates good learning experiences and engagement for youth in our region – it is a win-win.”MAGIC director David Long said Spell Studios is also excited to contribute the expertise and talents of RIT’s animation students to this fun and exciting project with the BOCES team.“Putting positive themes into school buildings

with living animated characters, school mascots and even cartoon teachers and administrators is a perfect way to make these messages engaging and exciting for everyone,” he added. Programming is projected to begin in early fall 2021.

Cattaraugus County schools share in nearly $212M in NY budget; $60M from U.S BY RICK MILLER Cattaraugus County school districts will receive $211.9 million in state aid under the 2021-22 state budget approved April 7. That is an increase from $196.9 million received by the county’s 12 school districts in the 2020-21 year just ended. Total school aid was up $15 million. The state budget, passed earlier in April, includes $29.5 billion for schools, an increase of $3 billion, or 11.3%. It includes a 7% increase in foundation aid, which is more flexible for school districts. There’s also $13 billion in federal COVID-19 related funding for schools. In addition, county schools will receive an additional $45.3 million from the American Rescue Plan and $14.5 million in earlier federal COVID-19 relief aid from the Economic Relief Plan. County school districts received $140 million in foundation aid in the state budget, an increase of $5.9

million over last year. New York State, which had pre-empted schools’ COVID-19 aid from the federal government last year, were barred from doing that this time. Last year’s “pandemic adjustment” amounted to $4.5 million the school districts did not receive. The Salamanca City Central School District will receive a 4.4% increase in total state aid to $23.5 million. That includes a 4% increase in foundation aid to $16 million. The district will also receive more than $7.2 million in federal funds

— $1.6 million from the Economic Relief Plan and $5.6 million from the American Rescue Plan. Other county school districts’ state aid totals and federal COVID-19 funding follow: • Cattaraugus-Little Valley — Total state aid $20 million, up 7.7%; foundation aid $11.3 million, up 3%. Federal COVID-19 funding (combined) $4.4 million. • Ellicottville — Total state aid $4.2 million, up 9.3%; foundation aid $2.9 million, up 4.4%. Federal COVID-19 funding $933,000. • Franklinville — Total state aid $15.6 million, up

past two years to improve the quality of library service to users.State librarian Lauren Moore announced that the Nyack Library was selected as the winner for its Black American Culture & Arts Series: The Legacy of Toni Morrison.“This year’s pool of candidates presented the Committee with a difficult challenge — how to pick from an array of quality projects,” she said. “While we are pleased to honor Nyack Library with this award, we felt we must recognize two other participants with Honorable Mentions.”Under extremely challenging operating conditions, the Cattaraugus Free Library’s new director, along with board and staff, increased book and DVD circulation and patron usage of the library by 100%, Moore said.A date for the “Libraries Transforming

Communities” meeting has been set for 3 p.m. Friday, May 7 at the Roberts Memorial Methodist Church outdoor pavilion. Library Director Lori Antholzner said guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Light refreshments will be provided.Community members are invited to join in the discussion of what can be done to revitalize the village of Cattaraugus, including what the village’s top priority should be. Antholzner said she has been researching various options and will provide information at the event. In this 60-minute discussion, library staff and local and state officials, including George Borrello, will be present to listen to ideas. This event is offered as part of Libraries Transforming Communities: Focus on Small and Rural Libraries, an initiative of the American Library Association in collaboration with the Association for Rural & Small Libraries.

to be killed in road traffic crashes as female drivers under 25. The WHO acknowledges that various factors can increase drivers’ risk of being involved in road traffic crashes, and distracted driving may be one of the biggest threats facing today’s young drivers. The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute notes that, in 2017, 40 percent of high school students reported texting or emailing while driving in the 30 days prior to being surveyed. Parents also may unknowingly contribute to teens’ distracted driving, as the CHPRI notes that teen drivers receive more calls from their parents while driving than any other group of motorists. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the number of licensed drivers who are 70 and older increased by 65 percent between 1997 and 2018. Older drivers are often considered less safe than their fellow motorists, but statistics fro the IIHS indicate that might be a misconception. While the number of drivers age 70 and older has increased considerably in recent decades, older drivers are now involved in fewer fatal collisions than they were in the past. Collision-related fatalities among drivers ages 70 and older declined by 15 percent between 1997 and 2018. Though such statistics are encouraging, it’s vital that aging drivers recognize that certain physical, cognitive and visual abilities may decline with advancing age,

and that such impairment has been linked to an increased risk of being involved in a crash. As a result, it’s important that older drivers self-police themselves and pay particular attention to any changes in their abilities that may compromise their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
