Submissions open for Downtown Springville Art Crawl SPRINGVILLE — Springville Center for the Arts is accepting artwork submissions for the juried annual Downtown Springville Art Crawl. The deadline to submit is Saturday, May 1. This one-night art event places artwork in small businesses along Springville’s East Main Historic District and visitors stroll from location to location during the free event. The art crawl takes place Saturday, June 5 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. In addition to fine art work, this year’s event is looking for
musicians and performers to play interspersed with the artwork, arts installation proposals, arts demonstrations and fine crafters looking to table in a sales area. A small “pop-up shop” marketplace will feature small business owners that do not yet have a storefront space. Community organizations interested in setting up a table to promote their activities are also sought. To submit artwork, artists are asked to email images of their submissions and an entry form to SCAArtSubmissions@ gmail.com. Five original
pieces of any medium may be accepted. There is no restriction on size or age. If accepted by the jury, artists will be notified and work must be delivered ready to display by May 29. A submission form and details are available at crawl. springvillearts.org. Performers, community organizations and others interested in participating should call the center at (716) 592-9038 or email SCAArtSubmissions@ gmail.com. The event will follow all current COVID-19 safety guidelines and is therefore subject to change. The art jury this year includes Gerald Mead, Cindi

SK8 EVL raffling Holiday Valley season pass, other prizes ELLICOTTVILLE — SK8EVL, a local group of skateboarding advocates, is selling raffle tickets, with one prize being a free season pass at Holiday Valley, to raise money for the Ellicottville Skatepark Fund. Tickets are $20 apiece or three for $50, with the drawing to be held April 1. Also being raffled off is a $200 gift card to Mud, Sweat n’ Gears, and an 8x12 poster of Tony Hawk, signed by the legend himself, donated by PandaGoat Media. Every dollar raised will be matched by The Skatepark
Project/Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation and will go toward constructing a permanent concrete skatepark in Ellicottville. Tickets for the upcoming raffle can be purchased at Mud, Sweat n’ Gears’ Ellicottville location, Venmo (@EllicottvilleSkatepark), PayPal (e l l i c o ttv i l l e s k ate p a r k @ gmail.com) or from any SK8EVL committee member. “We are so grateful for the generous donations from Holiday Valley, Mud, Sweat n’ Gears and PandaGoat Media,” said Brenda Perks,

SK8EVL’s lead advocate. “They’ve provided us with three amazing prizes that will help us get closer to our goal of building a skatepark.” To date, SK8EVL has raised $104,000 toward its $250,000 goal. SK8EVL has until Nov. 30 to raise as much funding as possible for the match. Fundraising efforts are being conducted as a result of a grant that Ellicottville was awarded by The Skatepark Project’s “Built to Play” program, which assists communities throughout Western New York in building free, public
skateparks. The mission: get kids outdoors and active. SK8EVL established the Ellicottville Skatepark Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation to support the group’s fundraising efforts at the beginning of the Ellicottville skatepark project. Tax deductible donations may also be made to the Ellicottville Skate Park Fund at CRCF anytime at 301 N. Union St., Suite 203, Olean, N.Y., 14760, or online at cattfoundation.org.
ELLICOTTVILLE — Students from the CA BOCES CTE Center at Ellicottville Power Equipment Technology program recently received a day of advanced heavy equipment electrical training. Sponsored by SUNY Cobleskill’s Workforce Development Outreach Project, the students participated in handson training to reinforce electrical fundamentals. Some of the training included using telematics to transmit machine data, laptop computer machine diagnostics, basic electrical component testing and module/controller interfacing. Industry representatives from LandPro Equipment, Five Star Equipment and SUNY Cobleskill conducted the training. LandPro Equipment also donated the use of a new state-of-the-art agricultural
tractor for the day. This tractor was “bugged” with faults, which the students had to correctly troubleshoot and identify. The main goal of the SUNY Cobleskill Workforce Development Outreach Project is to foster and build connections between students, educators and industry. The driving force behind this project is to educate and encourage young adults to enter the agricultural/construction equipment repair fields, as a shortage currently exists and is projected to increase in the near future. As the regional leader in education services, CA BOCES offers state-of-theart programs for learners of all ages and abilities as well as cost-effective shared services for 22 component school districts. Verbal abuse can make a child feel unloved, unwanted, insecure and unworthy, often leading to behavioral problems, depression and anxiety. The next time you’re about to lose your temper, stop, take a deep breath and think about what is really upsetting you. SBA Announces Veterans Business Outreach Center Funding Opportunity
Photos provided Cornell Cooperative Extension and Penn State Extension will present “Pips to Peeps: Virtual Hatchery School” in April.
Program to help farms develop small-scale hatching program Raising poultry on a small scale has become more and more popular and Cornell Cooperative Extension is teaming with the Penn State Extension in offering a program in April to help farmers get their best results. CCE’s Southwest New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Program (SWNYDLFC) and Penn State Extension will present “Pips to Peeps: Virtual Hatchery School.” The program will be presented by Amy Barkley, CCE livestock and beginning farm specialist, and Emily Shoop, a Penn State Extension poultry specialist. Through the program, participants will learn how to develop a small-scale breeding and hatching program. The program includes three lectures and virtual, interactive laboratories on topics including the basics of breeding flocks, incubation and insight into hatch rates and resulting chick quality. Classes will be held three consecutive Saturdays, starting April 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Class dates and topics are: April 10 — Basics of Breeding Flocks The lecture will be on selecting birds for a breeding program, appropriate male-female
ratios, biosecurity, national poultry improvement plan, choosing sound eggs for incubation, egg storage and culling eggs. The lab will focus on selecting quality birds and eggs. April 17 — Introduction to Incubation The lecture will touch on choosing the right incubator, setting up an incubation room, incubator and egg management, hatchers and their management, biosecurity, cleaning and disinfection and preparing a brooder. The lab will be a walk through an incubation room and incubator setup, as well as a candling demonstration. April 24 — Hatch Rates and Chick Quality The lecture will be on how to differentiate good and poor chick quality and determine how breeder flock and hatchery management affect this. Participants will learn the different reasons for “failure to hatch” and
what hatchery residue can reveal about the incubation process. The lab will focus on hatchery residue and chick quality. Registration for the series will be ongoing through the day of the last class, with recordings and notes of past classes available for interested participants to review on their own. There is a $25 class registration fee, which covers, in addition to all three live classes, access to the lecture and lab recordings as well as PDFs of the class notes. Register at https://extension.psu. edu/from-pips-to -peepshatchery-school. Printed copies of the notes and CD recordings of the lectures will be made available upon request. For more information about the series, contact Barkley, at amb544@ cornell.edu or (716) 6400844.

What to do in the immediate aftermath of a car accident
Car accidents happen every day. Though the World Health Organization reports that approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes, many more people walk away from such accidents relatively unscathed. In such instances, knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath of an accident can help drivers and passengers stay safe and start on their road to physical and financial recovery. No two car accidents are the same, but the Insurance Information Institute recommends anyone involved in a car accident take the following steps to make the most informed decisions in what is often a

difficult situation. · Assess your physical condition. The III recommends people involved in accidents check themselves for injuries in the immediate aftermath of an accident. Call 911 if you are hurt. If you’re seriously injured, try to remain still and only move with the assistance of emergency response personnel. · Assess passengers’ physical condition. Drivers who are not too hurt to move can check on their passengers after assessing their own condition. Before moving a passenger who is injured, speak with an emergency response professional. This person can assess the situation and determine if it’s safe to move an injured passenger or if it’s best to wait for first responders to arrive on the scene. · Get to a safe place. If possible, move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. If it’s safe to move a vehicle and the vehicle is in a hazardous position, such as in the middle of the road, pull it to the side of the road. If the vehicle won’t start of you suspect it could be dangerous to move it, leave the car where it is and get yourself and any passengers who can move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. · Call 911. If you have not already done so, call 911 once you have gotten to a safe place. The III notes that no accident is too minor to involve the police, and some local laws even mandate that all traffic accidents be immediately reported. Be sure to fill out an accident report, which can be vital for drivers who intend to file claims with their insurance providers. · Turn the vehicle off. If the vehicle is still running, turn it off. Turn on the vehicle’s hazard lights and, if you can physically do so and it’s safe to do so, place road flares around the car to warn fellow motorists. · Exchange information. Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver once everyone has determined that they are not injured. The III recommends exchanging full names and contact information. Specific information like insurance companies and policy numbers, driver’s license numbers and license plate numbers, the exact location of the accident, and the type, color and model of the other driver’s vehicle also should be exchanged and noted. · Avoid discussing fault with the other driver. Drivers will not determine who’s at fault. Such decisions are made by insurance adjusters. Discussing fault with the other driver in the immediate aftermath of an accident can lead to difficult, potentially heated exchanges. · Document the accident. The III recommends motorists involved in accidents identify the responding police officers and ask them how to
obtain copies of the official accident report. Take pictures and speak with any witnesses, jotting down their names and contact information if possible. · Notify your insurance provider. Notify your insurance provider as soon as possible. You can even do so from the scene of the accident if you’re capable of doing so. This can jump-start the claims process. Knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath of a car accident can calm drivers’ nerves and get them on the road to recovery that much sooner.
