Quigley Rock City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram is at 520 Rock City St., Little Valley. Rock City renews status as Certified Agriculture Dealer to better serve area farmers LITTLE VALLEY — Rock City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (CDJR) of Little Valley has renewed its commitment to their area farm community by retaining their designation as an official Certified Agriculture Dealership. “Trucks are a critical tool on the farm and ranch,” said Kristian Smith, commercial sales specialist at Rock City. “The work of the farm often depends on reliable equipment and we’re happy to focus on this important essential segment of our community.” The Certified Agriculture Dealership designation enables Rock City to be able to offer a specialized package of discounts and rebates called AgPack® to farmers that provides a first ever return on their truck investment. AgPack® partner offerings are worth thousands of dollars to farm customers. Being a Certified Agriculture Dealership lets the nearly 33,400 farm families in New York know that the dealership understands the uniqueness of agriculture. Farmers and growers who

purchase a new qualified truck from Rock City can then access AgPack®. Those who purchase or lease a new qualifying Ram or Jeep from Rock City have free access to AgPack®. This truck and SUV industry exclusive AgPack® package includes: • Special financing from AgDirect®, powered by Farm Credit®, offering flexible payment terms to match a farm’s income stream. • Exclusive rebates on Michelin & BF Goodrich® tires – from tractors to trucks to toys, savings worth over $5,000 • 25% off MSRP on Rhino Ag™ Products plus a gift card valued between $100200 • Certified Agriculture Dealer exclusive 5-10% Minimum Advertised Pricing (MAP) direct from Dixie Chopper® on their entire line of commercial mowers • 1-year subscription to AgriEdge®, valued at $5,000 • $2,000 credit towards AgroLiquid® Crop Nutrition • $1,000 toward a new Reinke® Irrigation system and $500 towards parts on any existing Reinke system • 25% exclusive rebates on many Gallagher® Livestock scales and

To learn more about this exclusive offer only available through a Certified Agriculture Dealership go to: https:// www.certifiedeagdealer. com/ To retain this elite dealer group designation as a Certified Agriculture Dealership, Rock City is required to maintain a

minimum of three team members who have successfully completed an agricultural training program, created by farmers and ranchers, that has been peer reviewed for agricultural and educational correctness and carries several industry endorsements. Rock City also continues to participate in continuing education that extends its knowledge of everything important to New York agriculture, as it happens in real time. Ongoing education, combined with what the ag specialists learned through the Ag Awareness curriculum, will help the dealership to be an educated partner with area agriculture by pro-actively anticipating and meeting the changing demands of its farm customers. Did You Know?

Debris from home improvement projects can often be recycled. According to Waste Management, the largest residential recycler and renewable energy provider in North America, common construction materials such as concrete, porcelain, tile, lumber, metals, masonry, plastic, carpet, and insulation can potentially be recycled. When recycled, debris from construction projects may ultimately be used in various ways to benefit the planet. For example, such

debris may used as inerts that become road base, while clear wood may be transformed into mulch or biomass fuel. Crushed concrete can go on to live a second life as gravel or become dry aggregate for new concrete. Homeowners who want to recycle as much of their home improvement project debris as possible can work with Waste Management and/or their contractors to ensure the materials they no longer need continue to be put to good use.

WVDP promotes safety through the eyes of children WEST VALLEY — EM and CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV), its cleanup contractor at the West Valley Demonstration Project, produced its annual site calendar in a creative way to increase safety awareness for workers and their families. It is called the Family Fun Safety Calendar and features drawings created by WVDP employees’ children, ages 12 and under, that depict general safety practices. “At the West Valley Demonstration Project, it is understood that safety must be something that is not just remembered but put into practice every

day and in everything we do,” said Jennifer Dundas, DOE-WVDP Safety and Site Programs leader. “Safety does not start and stop at the work site. The Family Fun Safety Calendar is designed to engage employees as well as their families and provide a constant reminder on safety awareness.” The Family Fun Safety Calendar was created inhouse by the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) team with assistance from Human Resources and Administrative Support Services. Calendars include monthly safety topics

that are used for Safety Shares at pre-job briefings, along with federal holidays and company BeyondTargetZero Safety Meetings. Calendars are also distributed to subcontractors and key stakeholders. “This approach creates safety awareness across the site in a unique way,” said Ken Whitham, CHBWV Vice President of Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality. “The calendar allowed us to promote safety on site as well as at home; and the children’s drawings make them a ‘got-to-have’ item.”

Third round of WNY Fund microgrants supports 36 grants, $45,000 in COVID-19 relief For the third time since the beginning of the pandemic, philanthropic leaders in Cattaraugus County helped facilitate the distribution of microgrants from the WNY COVID-19 Community Fund Response Fund. The fund supported organizations working on the front lines to provide relief to those most impacted by the ongoing pandemic, culminating in 36 grants totaling $45,000. The WNY COVID-19 Community Response Fund was created by the philanthropic community to support nonprofits addressing immediate needs in response to the COVID-19 crisis in the eight counties of WNY. In the prior rounds of grantmaking, the WNY Fund’s microgrant program issued $34,000 in relief funding to the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, which acted as the fiscal agent to distribute grants to organizations providing needed services to vulnerable and impacted populations. Representatives from the Cattaraugus County Department of Health, Cattaraugus Community Action, Healthy Community Alliance, United Way of Cattaraugus County and Dr. Lyle F. Renodin Foundation worked to identify grant recipients in all three phases of funding Some recipients of the third round of microgrants include: • Cattaraugus County Department of Aging (Meals on Wheels of Cattaraugus County) — $3,000 for food, PPE (personal protective equipment) and hygiene supplies

• Connecting Communities in Action, Inc. — $3,500 for food and hygiene supplies for the CCA food pantry • Connecting Communities in Action, Inc. — $2,500 for clothing, PPE, transition supplies at Kinley Hill Shelter • Great Valley Food Pantry — $1,500 for food and hygiene supplies • Healthy Community Alliance — $600 for fresh food and produce for Community Place country store • Love INC Gowanda — $2,000 for food and hygiene supplies for the Gowanda Food Pantry, $1,500 for utilities/rent assistance, transportation, food • Love INC Springville — $900 for utilities/rent assistance, transportation and food for residents of northern Cattaraugus County • Saving Grace Outreach — $ 2,000 for food and hygiene supplies for Cattaraugus Food Pantry • Seneca Nation Food Pantry — $1,600 for food and hygiene supplies • South Dayton Food Pantry — $1,200 for food and hygiene supplies • United Church of Ellicottville Food Pantry — $1,300 for food and hygiene supplies • Valley View Baptist Church Food Pantry — $800 for food and hygiene supplies The WNY COVID-19 Community Response Fund has worked with CRCF and other community agencies to coordinate over $200,000 in grants to nonprofits in Cattaraugus County since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

St. Bonaventure, JCC offer new dualdegree nursing program

ST. BONAVENTURE — St. Bonaventure University and Jamestown Community College’s Cattaraugus County campus will offer a unique dual-degree program in nursing beginning this fall. The program is the second nursing program SBU has added in the last two years in response to a New York state bill that now requires future nurses graduating from associate degree or diploma nursing programs to obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing within 10 years of initial licensure. The university added an RN to B.S. in Nursing program in 2019. “This is a unique opportunity for students to have access to two dedicated groups of nursing faculty,” said Dr. Connie Perkins, director of nursing programs at St. Bonaventure. “This program allows students to gain a registered nursing license and begin practicing in our community while they finish their four-year

baccalaureate degree.” Students in the new nursing program will reside at St. Bonaventure while enrolled, but take classes at both campuses. All but two classes freshman year will be taken at SBU. In years two and three, all but one class each year will be taken at JCC. All classes in the senior year are at St. Bonaventure. Studies in the first, second and third year of the program will prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) while taking liberal arts and sciences through a blended-campus approach. “JCC is very pleased to build on the strength of our associate’s degree in nursing program by partnering with St. Bonaventure to create an exciting opportunity for students,” said professor Kathy Taydus, director of nursing education at JCC. “Our health care agencies and our communities will benefit from the

contributions of these new nursing professionals who will serve regional health care needs.” Upon finishing their third year, students earn an associate’s degree in Applied Science Nursing from JCC and can take the NCLEX-RN to become registered nurses and to allow them to begin entrylevel practice. In their final year, students will complete their bachelor’s nursing courses with special focus on emotional intelligence, i n t e r p ro f e s s i o n a l i s m , leadership and quality care. Since the last year of the program is presented in a hybrid format, students have the freedom to begin working as registered nurses if they choose to gain experience while finishing their bachelor’s degrees at St. Bonaventure. “This agreement represents a publicprivate partnership that will ultimately enhance the health care outcomes of Cattaraugus and surrounding counties by increasing the availability of

bachelor’s-trained nurses, who are so critical to the public health,” said Dr. Doug Pisano, founding dean and professor in SBU’s School of Health Professions. Prospective high school seniors will apply for admission to St. Bonaventure University, and then, provided they meet academic standards in their first semester, register for JCC’s Associate of Applied Science program by Feb. 1 of their second semester at SBU. Students applying to St. Bonaventure must indicate dual-degree nursing as their major. High school students with no college experience must have earned a 90% or above in high school courses, with a passing grade in high school or college chemistry. A strong, science-based high school curriculum is highly recommended. For more information on the program, contact Perkins at cperkins@sbu. edu.

Snow and ice dominate winter landscapes in cold climates. To ensure that sidewalks, entryways and outdoor areas are safe, people who live in cold climates must emphasize snow and ice removal. While few may give thought to the environmental impact that snow and ice removal can have, some might be surprised to learn that certain methods are far more eco-friendly than others. The application of salt is one of the most common methods to remove ice

and snow. But excess salt can build up in the soil and prevent plants from absorbing moisture and nutrients. Salt also may leach heavy metals that can end up in water supplies. Those looking for more eco-friendly ways to remove ice and snow can consider the following methods. • Shovel promptly. Minimize the buildup of snow and ice by shoveling snow as soon as it stops falling. A manual shovel is the most eco-friendly shoveling tool, but electric

snowblowers are effective as well. • Add grip. Apply sand or seeds to create traction on slippery areas. While these techniques will not melt snow and ice, they can provide more supportive footing until the ice and snow have melted. • Try a mat. Snow mats or

runners can make stairs and walkways safer to traverse. Lay mats or runners down over snow or ice to make walking safer. • Invest in an wired driveway. Electric coils can be placed beneath cement to heat up driveways and melt snow.

How to clear a clogged drain

Home plumbing systems are designed to handle heavy usage. When everything is working as t should, toilets flush, showers drain properly, and sink basins empty of water n a snap. But when a clog is present in a system, water can quickly back up. There are various echniques to clear clogged drains. Minor clogs may be cleared without the help of a plumber or even any tools. More significant blockages will require more elbow grease. The first step to clearing a clog is to locate the problem.

Drainage issues that affect a particular sink or toilet may be isolated to that fixture. Clogs that are present throughout the house may be indicative of a larger problem in the plumbing that is directing waste away from the house and into the sewer system. Sometimes a clog can be freed by pouring boiling hot water or a combination of baking soda and vinegar down the drain. If that doesn’t help, move on to a plunger, advise the experts at This Old House. By creating pressure within the pipes, a plunger

can dislodge whatever is causing the backup. If the clog seems to be further down the drain, hair or grime may have become trapped. An auger, often referred to as a “plumber’s snake,” can be inserted into the drain to remove the grime and free up the water flow. Homeowners without access to an auger can try to fish the clog out of the drain with a wire hanger. If clogs cannot be alleviated, drain traps may need to be accessed. Those who do not know their way around pipes and wrenches should hire a professional.

Air quality and heart health

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, studies have shown that air pollution can trigger heart attacks and strokes. The threat posed by air pollution is greater among people who have or have had coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, bypass surgery or an angioplasty, heart failure, stroke or transient ischemic attack, or blockages in the arteries of the neck or legs. People who have internal cardiac defibrillators also may be at greater risk of heart attack or stroke due to air pollution. While it’s common to assume that air pollution is only a problem for people who live in large cities, the American Heart Association warns against making such assumptions, noting that air pollution can be traced to a host of sources, including wildfires and cooking with wood stoves, that can be found outside of major cities.

AUTO CORNER Why is tire rotation so important?

Vehicle owners need to keep maintenance on the mind to ensure their cars and trucks are operating at peak capacity. Various components should be checked and serviced at key intervals. Oil changes and fluid top-offs are part of routine maintenance, but it can be easy to forget about other important parts of the vehicle, including tires.

Rotating tires is vital to their upkeep. Bridgestone Tires advises that tire rotation involves routinely repositioning a vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back and side to side. According to Big O Tires, the front tires tend to wear on the outside edges because the tire leans over when a driver turns a corner. The rear tires just follow the front ones, so they usually wear more evenly. By leaving tires in place, the outside edges on the front tires will wear down much faster than the rest and those tires will need to be replaced sooner. Rotation may be required by tire warranties. Rotation also keeps the tires working properly. Experts generally advise tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, even if they do not show any signs of wear. It is challenging to determine if weather treads are uneven or how much wear has been sustained just by looking at them. Rotating tires can prolong the life of tires and decrease how frequently they need to be replaced. Rotating tires keeps the tread depth uniform and helps maintain traction and consistent handling across all four tires. Bridgestone says the tire rotation pattern that is best for a particular vehicle depends on the type of tire being used. Patterns are recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, called The Tire and Rim Association, Inc. Individuals can consult with professional mechanics about the proper way to rotate tires. Many tire manufacturers or automotive stores that have sold customers tires also will do tire rotations - some free of charge. In addition to proper traction, minimizing uneven tire treads causes the vehicle to be more balanced, advises Wrench, a mobile auto repair and maintenance company. This enables the driver to have more control even when roads are slippery. Many auto service centers will then align and balance

tires after they have been rotated. At this time the mechanic will likely check brakes as well, since it is easy to see and reach them when the tires are off. Tire rotation is an important component of vehicle maintenance. Check with a qualified automotive professional to see if it’s time to have your vehicle’s tires rotated.
