Grant applications available to women in Cattaraugus County In 2017, Melissa Jusianiec and several other like-minded women decided to combat poverty in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties by creating a foundation to help women improve their lives. The end result is the Allegany-CattaraugusChautauqua Fund for Women which has financially assisted area women with everything from college tuition to art endeavors and training. The organization’s foundation is a component fund of the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Olean. Donations to the Fund for Women are tax deductible. Jusianiec, a resident of Alfred Station, announced this week that the open period for individual grant

applications are now available to women from the tri-county area through March 15. A thorough review of applications will precede award notifications on or around April 30. Jusianiec said grants are awarded based on demonstration of need and the applicant’s explanation on how the money will be used toward continued betterment. The amount awarded may vary from year to year, based on the number of applications and funds available, but will not be less than $200 per grant. “This past year, we provided five grants to women in the tri-county area,” Jusianiec said. “There are a variety of ways the grants were used. In 2020, the majority of the grants were used toward some type of higher

education — whether it was for purchasing books, helping to pay for tuition or for supplies such as for a computer or laptop.” Jusianiec, who works virtually for an advertising agency in Rochester, said the organization expects to award six $500 grants to women this year. She said women of various age groups and backgrounds have received the grants in the past. “Every year, our grants are used for different types of things,” she continued. “Last year, the majority was for education, other years we’ve had different activities or different projects.” Kirk Windus of the Cattaraugus Region Community Fund praised the work of Jusianiec and all others with the organization who support

“women in the tri-county area by providing financial support for education, professional development opportunities and more. “Their mission to provide self-sufficiency and empowerment for women is such an important one,” Windus said. “The intent of this fund is really amazing in my opinion.” Grant applications are accepted online at https:// www.accffw.org/grants or by emailing info@accffw. org to request an alternative application method such as a paper application or an individual interview. Techniques to revitalize a lawn after a long winter Pristine, snow-covered landscapes can be wonders to behold. While that blanket of white is idyllic, a lawn’s delicate blades may be paying a hefty price beneath the cold, heavy piles of snow. Snow plows push salt and sand up on the grass while subterranean animals like mice and moles dig burrows beneath piles of snow as they try to find food and stay warm. Such conditions are not favorable for thriving landscapes. When the spring thaw arrives, lawns may be in dire need of some TLC. The following techniques can mitigate winter-related lawn damage. • Clear out debris. Remove any scattered leaves, branches and other debris that has been strewn across the property due to storms or snow-laden trees. This will give you a clean canvas to work on. • Dry out snow mold. The Family Handyman says snow mold is a cold-season fungus that causes graycolored circles or patches

on the lawn where there has been snow. To alleviate snow mold, rake the lawn to loosen matted grass and facilitate the drying-out process. • De-thatch the lawn. Heavy snow can compress the grass and cause some of it to die off. De-thatching helps to remove dead grass blades and separate any matting. This enables water, nutrients and air to reach the lawn’s roots more effectively. Thinning out old organic matter also helps encourage new growth. • Aerate the soil. Coupled with dethatching, aeration involves loosening the soil or poking holes to allow nutrients to move freely to the roots. • Kill weeds before they spread. Weeds may be the first to start growing when the weather begins to warm. Address them promptly by manually pulling them or applying an herbicide. • Overseed the lawn. Chances are there are some bare spots that have formed over the winter. Overseeding can help to

fill in the lawn. Make sure that frosts are largely a thing of the past and soil temperature is around 50 F to 60 F before seeding. Water daily until grass fills in. • Apply nutrients. Fertilizer and compost can restore nutrients to the lawn that may have been used up

CA BOCES launches CTE Career Exploration program, website Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES (CA BOCES) has announced a new program, with an accompanying website, to help middle and high school students explore career options in technical fields — CTE Career Exploration. The new program and website provide a comprehensive look at career exploration and, with support of their home school guidance counselor, will allow students to take an interest assessment, explore career clusters and view a variety of videos pertaining to program options at CA BOCES CTE Centers in Belmont, Ellicottville and Olean. CA BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE)

Outreach Coordinator, Thomasine Graf, said that the program idea was a direct result of closures due to COVID-19. “In a normal year, students are able to visit our centers, speak to our instructors, and get a good feel for what each of our CTE programs looks like – COVID-19 changed that,” she said. “CTE Career Exploration allows students to explore career options and confidently decide if they want to embark on a CTE education as a part of their high school experience without physically entering a center or classroom.” In addition to the career exploration assessments, students will also have access to a professional

Gowanda Sports Report By Bill Peglowski It was quite an interesting week in Gowanda high school sports. There were three competitions involving Gowanda students: a virtual swim meet plus season opening home and away bowling matches. The Eden-Gowanda boys swimming team opened the week on Feb. 1 with a virtual swim meet against Depew. While no final score or official win/lose report on the meet has been made, the results and scoring for the individual events have been posted. Adding up those points shows a total of 94 for Eden-Gowanda and 66 for Depew. EdenGowanda swimmers took all but four events. Earning 1st place finishes for Depew were Nick Karnyski (100Y Freestyle) and Benjamin Wypij (100Y Breaststroke) along with the Depew 200Y Freestyle and 400Y Freestyle Relay teams. The Eden-Gowanda boys swept the 500Y Freestyle with Cody Gemza, Hayden Kaus and Logan Gemza finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Cody Gemza also won the 200Y Freestyle event [2:19.53]. Christian Merrill took 1st place in two events: the 200Y Individual Medley [2:38.81] and the 100Y Backstroke [1:15.24]. Additional 1st place finishes for Eden-Gowanda were: Austin Timblin (50Y Freestyle) [25.11] and Paul Winiecki (100Y Butterfly) [1:14.90]. The Gowanda boys and girls Bowling teams both opened their season at home hosting Ellicottville on Feb. 3 and both teams came away with 4-0 wins. Leading the way for the Gowanda boys was Cameron Wight with a 224 high game and 588 series. Johnny Smuda was right behind with a 586 series and a 178 high game. For the Gowanda girls, Paige Szalay had a 154 high game and 428 series to head up the Lady Panthers’ effort. Sierra Twoguns contributed a 414 series and a personal best high game of 191. The Gowanda teams headed to also unbeaten Hinsdale on Feb. 5 with both the boys and the girls teams suffering a 4-0 loss. For the boys, Daniel Marrocco had a personal best high game of 237 on the way to a 572 series for the Panthers. Drew Shull had a 487 series and a 160 high game. BUFFALO — The Western New York COVID-19 Community Response Fund is moving forward with an initiative to improve food security in Western New York. Regionally coordinated planning is underway, with Food Future WNY including more than 100 partners representing the entire spectrum of the food system in the region. SCALE Inc., led by Anthony Flaccavento, has been named to lead the nine-county effort stretching from Chautauqua County to Monroe County. Southern Tier West Development Foundation has taken on the role of fiscal sponsor and project co-lead.

“The ultimate goal of this new effort is to tackle entrenched challenges in new ways and to emerge from COVID-19 with a regional food system that is more effective, efficient and resilient,” said Kimberly LaMendola, regional development coordinator for the Southern Tier West Regional Planning & Development Board. “Farmers, producers and processors will be more independent and less reliant on large, centralized hubs,” she said. “Families will have easier access to healthy and affordable groceries and we will create new food-related jobs that contribute to the economic development of the region.” Flaccavento, president

New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Statewide winners can earn up to $1,500 towards their future education. The applicant or their family must: • Be a New York Farm Bureau member • The student must live and/or work on a farm in the state.

• The student must complete the application, which includes writing an essay addressing an issue facing agriculture in their county, and how Farm Bureau may support its members in addressing it. • Return the completed application packet by mail to pdugan@nyfb.org or mail to New York Farm Bureau, in Albany, with a postmark no later than March 1, 2021. Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a

personal interview. Each district winner will receive $100 and then compete for one of three state scholarships, worth $1,500, $1,200 and $1,000, based on their submitted applications.
