Red Cross teams with NFL to urge blood donation

The American Red Cross in Western New York and the National Football League are teaming up in January — National Blood Donor Month — to urge criticallyneeded donations.

Borrello named ranking member on 3 NY Senate committees

ALBANY — State Sen. George Borrello has been appointed as the ranking member of three Senate committees — Agriculture, Banks and the newlycreated Procurement and Contracts.

He was enthusiastic about his expanded responsibilities and affirmed his commitment to effect positive policy changes.

“New York state is at a critical juncture as both employers and residents grapple with the economic fallout of the pandemic,” Borrello, R-Chautauqua County, said in a press statement.

“My role as ranking member on these three very different but critically important committees will give me the opportunity to work on and advocate for policies that will help revitalize our agriculture and financial services sectors as well as improve the accountability of our state contracts at this time of limited resources,” he said.

Borrello was also named as a member of several additional committees, receiving new appointments to the Finance and Aging committees and reappointments to the Local Government and Internet and Technology committees.

The senator said the state budget “is a thread” that connects to virtually every policy area, with a direct impact on the state’s tax burden and overall economic climate.

“With New York being one of the costliest states in the nation in which to live and work, it is clear our budget needs more scrutiny and more voices advocating for tax relief and fiscal restraint,” he said, noting he’s gratified to serve on the Finance Committee.

Cattaraugus man attempts jail escape

LITTLE VALLEY — A Cattaraugus man is facing several felony charges after he allegedly made an unsuccessful attempt to escape the Cattaraugus County Jail in the village of

Little Valley.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office reported in a press release Jan. 9 that an investigation discovered that John C. Pasinski, 38, of Cattaraugus, “had caused

significant damage to a window in his cell in an attempt to escape.”

Pasinski was charged Dec.28, 2020 with first— degree possession of prison contraband and

attempted escape, both class D felonies, and third— degree criminal mischief, a class E felony.

Pasinski was arraigned and due to appear in court at a later date.

New life for old rifle cartridges

Wade Robertson photo New all-copper bullets can bring older, often neglected calibers back to life. Using these tough, deep-penetrating but lighter bullets at substantially higher velocities creates flatter trajectories, more energy and knockdown power without increasing recoil.

By WADE ROBERTSON Today the hunting and shooting worlds are filled with new, exciting cartridges.

Modern technology, the AR platform and objective looks at existing calibers have brought about more efficient case design, faster velocities and increased performance.

AR case length is fixed, but stubbier, larger capacity/caliber cases are constantly being developed, outperforming the .223 in many ways.

The .264 cartridges were largely ignored in the U.S. for generations, though widely used in Europe.

Inexplicably, hunters and shooters in North America shied away from arguably the best bullet diameter existing. Today however, the 6.5 Creedmoor, using .264 diameter bullets, has finally been recognized for the truly outstanding blend it possesses of bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, low recoil, flat trajectory and excellent killing power. The new 26 Nosler, a long-range magnum if there ever was one, also takes advantage of the .264’s potential with awesome ballistics.

Why we, here in the Americas, took so long to catch on is puzzling.

But, this article examines how new bullet technology invigorates our older calibers, some of which may be a favorite of yours, Dad’s

or Grandad’s. They’ve sat in the gun cabinet far too long; let’s reload and take them hunting.

Reloading is a fascinating hobby and allows you to build customized loads for any caliber you own, especially those a little long in the tooth, such as the .257 Roberts, 7x57 Mauser, 300 Savage or a host of older cartridges from those long-distant days of yore.

They worked back then and now, but you can safely increase their velocities with today’s revolutionary new bullets, notably the all-copper Hornady GMX or Barnes TTSX bullets.

Here, careful handloading can bring Dad’s rifle back into the stand, reborn and deadlier than before.

I have a soft spot for the .257 Roberts, not surprising since I bagged my very first buck with that caliber.

The venerable .257 was introduced in 1934 and its versatility as a varmint gun

using 60-, 75- or 87-grain bullets, and as a deer rifle using 117- or 120-grain projectiles at 2,700 to 2,800 feet per second (fps) made it very popular. The round was accurate, flat-shooting and a pleasure to shoot.

Interesting, but what is it about today’s new bullets that will allow the handloader to invigorate his older rifle? Let’s see.

My two favorite are GMX and TTSX bullets. What makes them different?

Both are copper hollow points, not lead. On impact the front half of the bullet violently expands into four petals, producing devastating shock. The rear of the bullet remains solid, the bullet’s penetration guaranteed. Since these bullets can’t break up like lead bullets, the reloader can drop a bullet weight, allowing your old rifle to shoot faster and flatter with enhanced performance. Ah, the magic of handloading.

Using a 100-grain TTSX bullet in the .257 allows me to gain 200 fps over the 120 without any increase in recoil. My favorite powders all deliver good accuracy with 100-grain bullets. The Hornady manual shows 39.2 grains of IMR 4064 delivers 3,000 fps, as do 43.6 of IMR 4350 and 48.3 grains of IMR 4831. Start lower than maximum loads, of course, and work your way up.

I have not tried the 80-grain TTSX, which can be loaded up to 3,300 fps (Wow!) in the .257, but you can bet the farm that copper bullet will not break up on a shoulder and, most likely, exit the far side of a deer hit in the rib cage. That’s not the tame rifle from the 1930s by any stretch of the imagination. Feeling the urge to handload?

Another favorite caliber is the 7x57 Mauser, developed in 1895. The older rifles have soft-steel actions, but modern-

actioned 7x57s can be loaded substantially higher.

In either case dropping a bullet weight will give you more zip. In my rifle with a modern action and 22-inch barrel a 140-grain Nosler partition at a modest 2,650 fps took a literal pile of deer over the years, many oneshot kills. Today, I’d load the 120-grain coppers with around 42 grains of IMR 4064 and expect 2,800 fps with less recoil.

The 7mm-08 is just a 7x57 reborn in a short action, a .308 case necked down to .284, but loaded to higher pressures. Unfortunately, many rifles sold in this caliber were in Model 7 Remingtons with 18-inch barrels. Hunters quickly discovered the short barrel didn’t allow 140-grain bullets to gain enough velocity to reliably open up on deer. Here, reloading the 120-grain coppers are a big plus or even a 100-grain if you place a perfect shot in neck or rib cage. Use a faster-burning powder in short barrels — RL-15 or Winchester 760 work well.

The 300 Savage was very popular, but most sit home nowadays. A 150-grain bullet at 2,700 fps was a good round and killed countless deer, but today it’s an antique. The TTSX 110-grain can be pushed to 3,000 fps with IMR 3031 or 4320, a devastating round for sure.

Your older rifle, of any caliber, may have found the fountain of youth in modern bullet technology and handloading can rejuvenate them once again. If you don’t handload, start, it’s a fascinating hobby with real purpose, as you can easily see.

Cattaraugus man recognized for Cattaraugus Creek cleanup efforts

CATTARAUGUS — Don Shelters of Cattaraugus was recognized Saturday by members of the Zoar Valley Paddling Club for organizing cleanups for 30 years on the Cattaraugus Creek watershed.

Club members gathered Saturday at Shelter’s home for the socially-distanced presentation that was held outdoors. Members hiked or took a kayak trip on Cattaraugus Creek prior to the presentation Shelters, a former Zoar Valley Paddling Club president, is the longeststanding member of the whitewater paddling club that calls the Cattaraugus creek their home. He currently serves as the club’s conservation officer.

“He enjoys the outdoors and being on the river in canoes, kayaks and rafts,” said Steve de Boer, a longtime club members and officer. “He has taken

countless numbers of people on trips on the Cattaraugus and on many rivers throughout the eastern United States.”

Shelter’s “love for the environment of the Cattaraugus Creek is evident in his 28 consecutive years of organizing four river cleanup days each year,” said de Boer.

One river cleanup is typically associated with the paddling club, community members and recently the Nature Sanctuary Society of Western New York. The other cleanup is held in conjunction with the Seneca Nation of Indians and their water walkers group during an earth day event.

De Boer urged anyone interested in volunteering for cleanup days on Cattaraugus Creek or those interested in learning more about whitewater boating visit the Zoar Valley Paddling Club Facebook page.

Gowanda Mural Project beautifying village one wall at a time

A mural planned for an outside wall of the Palm Gardens building in Gowanda.

GOWANDA — From early in 2020, a group of community volunteers formed the Gowanda Community Clean Up Group.

Eventually numbering more than 100, members of the group were often seen cleaning up the Gowanda downtown area and local parks. It was not long before their attention turned to the Aldrich Street bridge.

The bridge is one of the primary spans crossing the Cattaraugus Creek in Gowanda. At the south end of the bridge there is an access road that has made it a favorite place for the fishermen.

The area has also had a long history as a “party spot.” For decades the concrete bridge support at that end of the bridge has been a site for an abundance of inappropriate graffiti. At least once in the past, the writing has been blotted over with spots of white paint.

When the Gowanda Community Clean Up Group set their sights on the problem, the solution got an upgrade. With such a large group, it was inevitable that there would be a number of artistic individuals there.

They moved beyond just writing out the markings.

They covered them over with a large painting of a steelhead trout dubbed Francine.

One of the artists involved in that work was Gowanda High School art teacher Heather Rydzik. That initial artwork sparked the idea of beautifying other spots in the village with murals. On June 10, Rydzik from the Gowanda Mural Project in a Facebook group.

Together with Krissy Bartholomew Smith and Amelia Dye Jarzynski, the group would bring together other local artists of various skill levels to paint murals at selected sites in Gowanda.

Before the painting projects got underway, there was an initial chalk art display done on the sidewalk in

front of Jesse’s Gifts and More, which is in-part run by Jarzynski.

The first mural to be done was started on June 20 on the east exterior wall of a hair salon run

by Alison Connolly. The building, being right on the main square in downtown Gowanda, provides a great view of the simple floral design to traffic entering the Business District from the bridge in the center of Gowanda.

A Community Paint Project event on July 25 invited individuals to sign up for time slots to work on a mural planned for an outside wall of the Palm Gardens building. A second phase of the paint project took place Aug. 8. In the end, a floral scene with giant butterflies and a large hummingbird was completed Aug. 19.

That was followed up with the Gowanda Mural Project Kids Edition beginning the next day. Attention was turned to the jersey barriers separating the back of the Shop’N Save parking lot from the Cattaraugus Creek.

For the first phase of this project solid colors were painted. Eventually, some hills and stick figures would be added with many of the design ideas coming from local children. The project was completed in midOctober.

On July 30, Erin Tyler began organizing the project where artists could sign up to do a mural on one of eight sections of alley wall ranging from 4 foot square to 12 feet by 8 feet. Each artist would design their own creation, which resulted in a diverse collection of works.

“Living in California now, I rarely get to bring my own son home to visit,” she said.

Leann and her family stayed with one of the mural project group members during her stay in town.

Her design is a large monochromatic piece in the shape of New York state and the Gowanda school colors of blue and white. It includes many of the images the artist remembered from growing up in Gowanda and her school experience.

The Gowanda Mural Project gained a great deal of popularity as it progressed and many building owners have come forward hoping to be included.

“Our mural line-up for the mural project is full for 2021, we already have about a dozen locations on our what’s next list,” Rydzik said to one owner. “We’re happy to add your building to our list, just know that we probably won’t get to it for, it’s crazy to say but 4 or 5 years”.
