Leadership Cattaraugus accepting 2022 scholarship applications

Mammoth Exhibit continued from 1 discovery. They unearthed what was later identified as the skull and tusks of a Columbian mammoth, a particularly rare find for the region. In the days that followed, much excitement was generated in the area as thousands of locals flocked to the dig site to witness the unearthing. Dr. C.A. Hartnagel, the assistant state paleontologist sent to Randolph to oversee the excavation, said at the time that it was the first find of its kind in the state and of great scientific importance. Soon, however, the Randolph Mammoth was crated and shipped to Albany, where it would spend several decades on display at the State Museum. The Randolph Mammoth is one of the most complete mammoth specimens ever found in New York state. Most other mammoth material is fragmentary, often consisting of just a tooth. It is believed to be a Columbian mammoth, considerably rarer in this region than the wooly mammoth.

Both tusks together weigh about 150 pounds, while the skull weighs about 200 pounds. When living, the mammoth probably stood about 14 feet high at the shoulder. In 2011, the State Museum began loaning the original tusks and a cast of the skull to museums around the state to display. It finally returned to Cattaraugus County in 2016, where it remained on exhibit at the County Museum for nearly two years. Now, the museum plays host to the mammoth once again, as it opens a new fossil exhibit that features specimens representing

eras spanning from the Paleozoic to the Pleistocene. Several items in the new display appear courtesy of generous loans from the State Museum and the Buffalo Museum of Science. The Cattaraugus County Museum is located in the

Stone House, 9824 Route 16, in Machias. The museum’s hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit www. cattco.org/museum

Scholarship applications are available for Leadership Cattaraugus’ class of 2022 applicants through the organization’s scholarship fund, managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation. The Leadership Cattaraugus board of directors established the scholarship to support worthy future leaders in the community by making program tuition more affordable. The application is available at cattfoundation.org/ scholarships. Applicants must email their completed application to foundation@cattfoundation.org by Dec. 31 to be eligible. The CRCF Scholarship Committee will review the applications and recommend the awardees. Scholarship applicants must also apply for admission to the 2022 Leadership Cattaraugus class at www. leadershipcattaraugus.org. The 2022 program begins in March 2022 and runs through December 2022. The fund provides scholarships to cover the lesser of 25% of the cost of tuition or $400. Applicants must live in and/or work in Cattaraugus

Ellicottville’s Christmas Stroll postponed to Saturday ELLICOTTVILLE — Ellicottville’s annual Christmas Stroll, originally scheduled for Dec. 4, has been moved to Saturday to allow for additional planning. The Christmas Stroll welcomes all to a day of friendship as locals and visitors come together to remember the season and the story behind this special time of year. “Ellicottville is a great place to come out and experience a relaxed pace and to take

the time to enjoy a nice representation of the reason we celebrate during the holiday season,” said Gwen Bush, organizer of the event. “Come out and remind yourself what Christmas is all about.” Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic Church, located on the corner of Jefferson and Martha Streets, will have their display of Nativity and angels for all to see. The sidewalks of downtown will be filled with the sounds of the season as festive music

permeates the air, coupled with the soft voices of sauntering carolers. Local businesses have been busy decorating their storefronts, showcasing beautiful holiday themes for your enjoyment as you window shop throughout the afternoon. Santa is expected to make an appearance at Villaggio at 4 pm. At 4:30 p.m., dogs dressed in their holiday best will march alongside their owners

down Washington Street to the gazebo. Those interested in participating in the Reindog Parade should meet at the post office parking lot at 4:30 pm. At 6 p.m., a Living Nativity featuring local children will be at the gazebo.

Little Valley church relaunched as Bridge of Hope BY DEB EVERTS LITTLE VALLEY — The Little Valley First United Methodist Church, located at 109 Court St., is now known as Bridge of Hope. The congregation welcomed the public to share in the relaunch activities, beginning with a worship service Nov. 28 followed by a time of celebration and fellowship. Church member Glenda Campbell said the name change won’t be official until their paperwork is accepted. She said some research also has to be done to be sure another church isn’t already using the name “Bridge of Hope.” According to Campbell, the Methodist conference closed the church for seven months due to COVID-19 restrictions but it has been allowed to reopen. She said 20 to 25 members were attending services on a weekly basis. A declining attendance prompted a relaunch, as directed by district superintendent Suzanne Block. Campbell said the active church members needed to regroup and search for God’s guidance on where the church was headed.

“Some decisions had to be made. We asked ourselves if we should continue to remain open or should we close the church, so we went through a relaunch,” she said. “It took us seven months and, during that time period, eight of the members participated in a conference program called Launchpad.” The purpose of the program was to assist the congregation. Campbell said the group met weekly, via Zoom, and the program guided them into discovering God’s plan through ministry and how to put that vision into place. “At the same time, we were having a Wednesday night Bible study that was being taught by the district superintendent,” she said. “The lessons were from the books of Acts and Ephesians, with the focus being on Christ’s church, and it was open to everyone.” In spite of the declining numbers in membership, some members have remained active behind the scenes since the beginning of May. Campbell said they’ve been meeting every Thursday night as a group discussing reopening,

revisioning, renaming the church and starting over. She said they have spent many hours in Bible study and prayer putting a lot of effort into this plan. It’s been a huge commitment for everyone involved. Part of the relaunch includes new programs. Campbell said they are currently doing a Faith Circle on the first and third Monday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Memorial Library of Little Valley. She said the program is being held at the library, rather than the church, because people sometimes don’t want to come into the church but are willing to go somewhere else. “Over the summer, we did some community based activities to try to get a feel for what the community wanted from a church and how we can meet the needs of the community,” she said. “We had some success and some failures, but we learned a lot. We learned that the younger generation doesn’t feel the church is relevant today, so we have to find a way to make church relevant and appealing to them and all ages.” Campbell said the whole
