Red Cross of WNY marks Red Cross Month BUFFALO — The American Red Cross of Western New York is honoring volunteers this month, which is Red Cross Month. “When emergencies strike, our community rallies together to help families and individuals when it matters most,” said Nicholas Bond, regional CEO of the Red Cross in WNY. “We honor this dedication during our Red Cross Month celebration, and we invite everyone to turn their compassion into action by donating, volunteering, giving blood or taking a lifesaving skills course.” Recognize Red Cross Month by visiting redcross. org to make a financial donation, give blood, become a volunteer or take a class in lifesaving skills, such as first aid and CPR. Community Blood Bank urges donations at Great Valley event GREAT VALLEY — Community Blood Bank is rallying people throughout the region to roll up their sleeves in March. The blood shortage that spans the nation has affected the blood bank for two years now, Joanne Griebel, hospital services coordinator, said. Community Blood Bank is the exclusive blood supplier to 19 hospitals and seven medEvac stations in northwest Pennsylvania and Western New York. “Building a healthy blood supply is always our goal,” Griebel said. “That’s where donors come in. We need you to build up the supply so we can fill up the hospitals.” All donors will be entered to win one of four $300 gift cards to either Lowes or Home Depot. JCC nursing ranked among better programs in NY

WVDP converts office building to demolition support complex WEST VALLEY — EM and its prime contractor CH2M HILL BWXT West Valley (CHBWV) completed the conversion of an onsite office building to a demolition support complex. This reconfigured facility will support cleanup activities during the demolition of the Main Plant Process Building, an EM priority for 2022. “The reconfiguration of this former office building will provide support for our dedicated workers who will be directly involved in

the demolition of the Main Plant,” said WVDP Director Bryan Bower. “From showers to personal protective equipment, this facility will become an integral part in helping EM continue its mission of reducing legacy risks and life-cycle costs.” WVDP’s new demolition support complex boasts new locker rooms and showers for men and women, personal protective equipment, respirator issuance room, radiation monitoring control room, radiation control personnel and a large area for

pre-job briefi ngs, meetings and lunch. When demolition starts, workers will be able to pickup and suit-up in the necessary protective clothing before entering the Main Plant demolition work area. Upon exiting the demolition work area, workers will use a designated egress to enter the building, remove their protective clothing and use the asbestos decontamination showers. From there, they will exit into a “clean” area and get dressed in the locker room.

The building is designed to protect employees and the environment by controlling radiological and industrial hazards at their source. This former building, also known as the “10-Plex,” was built using 10 double-wide office trailers. It housed several employees from different departments, which included Facility Disposition, Quality Assurance, Environmental Safety Health and Quality, Engineering, Radiation Protection, Regulatory Strategy and Project Management.

Olean General Hospital seeks volunteers OLEAN — Olean General Hospital is seeking new volunteers to help in a variety of ways at the hospital.Volunteers, ages 14 and older, can offer as little or as much time as they’d like in a variety of

ways, including as greeters, gift shop workers, patient liaisons, art cart helpers, compassionate companions, mailroom helpers, runners and general office helpers, said Audrea Sirianni, volunteer services coordinator

at OGH.“We are so grateful to be able to utilize our volunteers again after the pandemic caused us to put our volunteer program on hold. We value each and every one of our volunteers who

OLEAN — SUNY Jamestown Community College’s nursing program was ranked among the better associate degree offerings in New York state in 2021, according to the Nursing Schools Almanac annual rankings. JCC’s nursing degree came in at No. 25 of 68 programs evaluated. Rankings are determined by student performance on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. The Nursing Schools Almanac uses 10 years of data to calculate the pass rate among first-time test-takers at each institution. JCC nursing students have historically done well on their licensure examination, which aspiring nurses must pass to practice nursing in the United States. According to NSA, JCC students taking their first licensure exam passed at an 88.8% rate from 2011-20. In overcoming COVID-19 challenges, May 2020 JCC graduates achieved an 86% pass rate — 2% better than the New York state average. The national pass rate for all nursing programs in 2020 was close to 87%. JCC graduates in 2018-19 passed at rates of 95% and 94%, respectively. “Our nursing program is challenging and demanding of students,” said Heather Burrell, JCC’s director of nursing. “It is built that way to prepare our graduates to pass the licensure examination and

be successful registered nurses.” JCC graduates are prepared for nursing careers and to pursue further education. JCC has transfer agreements with nine regional colleges for those interested in earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing, as well as a dual enrollment program with St. Bonaventure University. To learn more about JCC’s nursing program, open house events are set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 26 on the Jamestown Campus and 10 a.m. to noon April 2 on the Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean. The college is also hosting a virtual open house at 7 p.m. March 23. The in-person events give students opportunities to complete their admissions application, learn about scholarships and financial aid, tour campus, learn about support services, and talk with current students, faculty, and staff. Online attendees can also converse with faculty and staff. Additionally, JCC extended its fall 2022 nursing program application due to COVID-19 circumstances. The extension helps students who missed mandatory information sessions between November and January and those who did not meet program eligibility requirements by the original Feb. 1 deadline. Gowanda Sports Report vThe sixth seeded Silver Creek Varsity Basketball team made their way into the semifinals by beating the No. 11 Maple Grove team. For the quarterfinals, Silver Creek traveled to No. 3 Frewsburg and came away with a 67-59 victory. In the semifinals at Jamestown Community College, the Silver Creek boys faced off against No. 2 Holland. Holland jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead. An Aidan Jamison 3-pointer brought Silver Creek back to within five only to be countered with a 3-point score from Holland. Very even play for the rest of the first quarter left the score at 17-9. Silver Creek came out hard in a second quarter that saw them outscore Holland 15-5. That run included two 3-point scores for Jamison and was capped with a 3-point score by Ray Cortez. The Cortez score put Silver Creek in front 24-22 at halftime. In the beginning of the third quarter, the Silver Creek offense stalled allowing Holland to surge back into a 37-28 advantage. A 7-3 Silver Creek spurt as the quarter ended moved the score to 40-35. Holland scored the first nine points in the final period taking the score to 49-35. From that point, Holland was able to hold on for a 64-49 win. Cortez was dominant for Silver Creek with 11 points in the fourth quarter and a game total of 25. Aidan Jamison added another eight points. The sixth seeded Silver Creek Varsity girls basketball team also made it to the semifinals with a 70-28 win over Buffalo’s MST (Math, Science, & Technology Preparatory School), a No. 3 seed. In the semifinals at JCC, Portville took an early 6-2 advantage over Silver Creek. That lead grew to 15-6 as the first quarter ended. The deficit grew to 19-6 before back-toback Abby Rice 3-pointers started a Silver Creek comeback that closed the score to 25-19 by halftime. An offensive collapse in the third

quarter by Silver Creek gave way to a 22-7 surge by Holland. An 8-point fourth quarter from Jade Bouvier helped Silver Creek build a 19-6 rally. That still saw Silver Creek fall short 5345 in the game. Leading the scoring for Silver Creek was Rice with 16 points. Jade Bouvier added nine points and Malani Eldridge had six points. Gowanda placed 5th in the D2 Large Varsity division of the Section 6 Cheerleader Championships held Feb. 12. Competing against larger schools including Starpoint and Newfane, Gowanda performed a solid routine with only 1 point deducted. “We are looking forward to next season,” Gowanda coach Michelle Merrill said.

Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights. Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets. However, a study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88 percent of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare, with more than 30 percent saying the glare is “disturbing.” While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” spectrum make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’ s eyes harder, especially at night. In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes will take to adjust to changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough blindness to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take certain steps to make it safer to drive at night.

· Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out. · Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly. · Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes also impair vision. Visit with a primary care physician as well as an eye doctor to diagnose conditions that can make night vision worse. · Change your line of sight. Do not look directly into oncoming headlights. Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you’re not focusing on the beams. · Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with anti-glare coating. This will significantly reduce the amount of glare. VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8 percent of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12 percent of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5 percent of

available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase specific antiglare glasses to wear in high-glare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens. · Flip the rearview mirror to “night” mode. This will make it appear as though lights coming from behind are dimmer. These are some of the steps to take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night. Taking breaks also can help eyes recover.
