Nominating petitions available for Salamanca BoE election SALAMANCA — The Salamanca City Central School District has announced nominating petitions are available for this year’s school board election May 17.

The one candidate receiving the highest number of votes will be assigned the fiveyear term seat beginning on July 1 and expiring June 30, 2027. The one candidate receiving the second most votes will be assigned the unexpired term beginning May 18 and expiring on June 30, 2023.

To qualify as a candidate, one must be a qualified voter and a district resident for one year immediately prior to May 17. Each candidate must also file with the district

Mothers of the Nation successfully call for tribal legislation that halts payments IRVING,NY — The Mothers of the Nation, a group of Seneca women organized under the Seneca Constitution, are commending the Seneca Nation Council for passing a resolution that requires a review and final determination by the National Indian Gaming Commission as to whether additional revenue sharing payments to New York State are lawful under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The Seneca Nation Council met today in a Regular Session on the Cattaraugus territory.

During the session, several members of the Mothers of the Nation called upon the Council to halt over $800 million in disputed payments to the state. The meeting followed a month of disruption in the Seneca Nation caused by a settlement agreement signed by President Matthew Pagels and New York Governor Kathy Hochul on January 12, 2022, to end the five-year Class III gaming compact payment dispute.

Odie Brant Porter, a resident of the Allegany

territory, and a founding member of the Mothers of the Nation, proposed on the floor of Council, that the resolution to make more than $540 million in payments to the state be amended to require that any future payments be subject to federal review and determination.

In September 2021, the National Indian Gaming Commission announced that it had opened an investigation into the matter, which is on-going.

Council then recessed and entered into executive session, ultimately adopting the amended resolution, by unanimous consent, to halt all payments until the National Indian Gaming Commission completes its review.

The Mothers of the Seneca Nation issued the following statement: “The Mothers of the Nation support the Council’s decision to require federal review of the legality of additional revenue sharing payments to New York State before any payments are made. The Mothers have exercised our

collective voices, and the power of our people, to move our Nation in the right direction for the best benefit of the Seneca people, our children, and our future. We thank the Council for its decision today.”

The Mothers of the Nation, who are recognized under the Seneca Constitution of 1848 to approve treaties, organized a petition drive, and gathered signatures of nearly 200 Seneca women opposed to the terms of the proposed settlement agreement. The Mothers’ petition has been submitted to the National Indian Gaming Commission and the Department of the Interior requesting immediate intervention and swift review of the legality of the payments.

The proposed settlement agreement with the state, if approved, would end the gaming compact dispute, pledging to release approximately $540 million of disputed payments held in escrow and another projected $265 million through 2023. In return, the state

offered to commence good faith negotiations for a new compact, which concedes nothing, since any state is obligated to enter compact negotiations when asked by the tribe under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA).

In 2016, Nation officials made the decision to stop paying the State because the terms of the 7-year compact extension were silent on further payments. The Interior Department has

twice written that it agrees with this interpretation, including the Biden-Haaland Administration, as recently as April 2021.

In addition, on September 16, 2021, the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) stated that it considers additional revenue sharing payments a significant question requiring review.

Further, a September 15, 2021 letter from Assistant Secretary of the Interior Bryan Newland expressed

“serious concern” that further payments to the State may violate the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA).

On behalf of the Mothers, Porter said, “The Mothers of the Seneca Nation will continue to stay active to ensure that the actions of our officials promote the betterment of our people and our future generations. We appreciate their decision today.”

Winter Music Jam continued from 1 town, buckle up … there’s a lively weekend coming up that will give you the full experience!

Ellicottville’s Winter Music Jam, set for Feb. 1820th, will feature three days of indoor live music in all the hot spots, complementing the list of outdoor fun you’ll have in our active ski town.

With 15+ performers on deck covering a variety of genres, it will prove to be a good challenge trying to check them all out.

“We can’t think of a better way to celebrate a holiday weekend than right here in Ellicottville,” said Jessica Wallace, business development manager for the Ellicottville Chamber of

Commerce, which produces the event.

“The snow at both our ski resorts has been amazing, and to add in a full bill of live music, it’s the perfect pairing!”

GOWANDA,NY — On Feb. 8, the Gowanda Varsity boys basketball team was at Portville trying to even the score after losing to them 59-45 nearly a month before.

Gowanda had given up the first four points in the game when Quentin Centner got them on the board 4-2.

Portville pushed their early lead to 7-2 before Gowanda staged a serious comeback.

With Centner doing all of the scoring, Gowanda ran up 11 straight points capped with three 3-pointers in a row, two of these in the last 50 seconds of the period. A Portville score and subsequent foul shot with 5 seconds left saw Gowanda end the period up 13-11. Portville had their best production of the game in the second quarter adding 19 points to their score. Meanwhile, Gowanda struggled to score nine in the period, eight of those credited to Centner, including two 3-point baskets.

Portville was up at the half 30-22. John Ondus led the way for Gowanda in the third quarter scoring twice from 3-point range and going two for two from the foul line. Another two points was scored by Tyler Smith for a total of 10 points for Gowanda. That took

the score to 46-32. In a very close final period, Gowanda edged Portville 14-13, but not enough to pull out a win. The final tally was 5946, just a single point different from the first meeting of the two teams. With his biggest game of the week, Centner led Gowanda with 8 3-point scores and a total of 32 points. Ondus added another 11.

Feb. 11 saw the team travel to Maple Grove.

After falling behind 5-0, Gowanda rallied back to grab a short lived 10-9 lead.

Scoring the final seven points in the period, Maple Grove was back on top 16-10.

The second quarter started out tight with Maple Grove only able to improve their lead slightly to 23-15.

At that point, 3-pointers by Tyler Smith and John Ondus sparked a Gowanda streak that saw them take a 29-27 halftime lead.

A tight, but high scoring third quarter saw Maple Grove edge Gowanda 19-18.

John Ondus scored the last two points in the period for Gowanda with 9 seconds on the clock. Starting with a one-point advantage going into the last quarter, Gowanda slowly pulled away, outpacing Maple Grove 20-10 for a 67-56 final.

While halogen bulbs were common in the past, modern vehicles now largely utilize high intensity discharge (HID) bulbs or light-emitting diodes (LEDs). HIDs work similarly to fluorescent bulbs by passing an electric current through an inert gas in a glass cylinder. LEDs are semiconductors that emit light when powered by an electric current. LEDs and HIDs are now used because they are efficient and last longer. These headlights quickly replaced halogen bulbs as the industry standard, but many drivers have lamented that they are increasingly feeling blinded by headlight glare. Walker Hayes to headline County Fair concertAug. 3 LITTLE VALLEY — The Cattaraugus County Fair has announced the first of two country music concerts planned for this summer’s county fair.

Singer-songwriter Walker Hayes, a Mobile, Ala., native, will perform in front of the grandstand on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Opening act is Cooper Arnold.

The Monument Records recording artist’s current single is “I Hope You Miss Me,” from “Country Stuff: The Album.” It also spawned the singles “Fancy

Like” and “Drinking Songs.”

Tickets go on sale Feb. 15 at 9 a.m. All tickets are sold only through etix.com. The concert promoter is Variety Attractions.

Tickets are $45 for track seats or $35 for the grandstand plus gate admission. All seating is reserved. There will be chairs on the track this year.

A second concert will be announced in March.

The Gowanda boys basketball team closed out their week at home on Feb. 12, hosting Cassadaga Valley for a rematch of an early January 5953 loss. Although Cassadaga scored first, Gowanda evened the game at two. Things remained tight until the score was 8-8 when Gowanda began to surge. Outscoring Cassadaga 11-4, including four points in the last 30 seconds, Gowanda was up 19-12 going into the second quarter. Cassadaga held Gowanda to 10 points in the second quarter allowing the gap to be narrowed to 29-25 by halftime. Gowanda increased their lead to 43-36 through the third quarter. Cassadaga made a big push as the final quarter started. Outscoring

Gowanda 11-2, Cassadaga grabbed a brief 47-45 lead midway through the quarter. Gowanda regained the lead as Adam Golden scored while being fouled under the basket. The successful foul shot put Gowanda up 48-47.

Things remained tense the rest of the way with Gowanda still up 53-52 with 52 seconds left in the game. The teams each went one of two from the foul line to inch the score ahead. With a few seconds left in the game, Cassadaga went for the win with a shot from the corner. That shot fell short and a last second shot from under the basket was deflected. In the 54-52 win, Gowanda’s top scorer was Centner with 18 points.

Also with strong games were Golden (14 points) and Ondus (12 points).

The Gowanda Varsity girls basketball team started off their week on a high note.

Feb. 7 was Senior Night for the team as Gowanda hosted Cassadaga Valley.

The first meeting of these teams had resulted in a slim 47-46 Gowanda win. Before the game, seniors Autumn Nephew, Mavi Montour, Asia Lindgren and Aaliyah

McKinsey finished his season with an 18-8 record and an 8th place finish at the championships. He had a first-overtime, sudden-victory win by 6-2 decision over Sam Zeigler (Portville) before being pinned by Gavin Ciarfella (Medina) in 3:25.

McKinsey then lost to Miguel Salas (Newfane) by Technical Fall 15-0.

Springville’s Nick Brown, with a season record of 28-5, earned his way to the state finals by taking first place in the 160 weight class. After a first round bye, Brown pinned Conor Crandall in 0:24. He then earned an 11-9 decision over Jayden Malecki (Chautauqua Lake). Finally, he took down Donald Bennett (Pioneer) by pin in 3:41.

Feb. 10-12 the Section 6 Class C Swimming Championship was held at Clarence High School.

Coming out on top as a team was Frewsburg with

521 points. In fourth place was Springville (184 points) and in 11th place was Eden/ Gowanda (97 points).

Holland totaled 9 points leaving them in 16th Place.

Top individual effort of local note was Austin Yetter (Springville) who was 11th with 1 Silver (200Y Individual Medley, 2:11.04). Gowanda swimmers failed to earn top places in the competition, but did well in a field of 129 swimmers. In 53rd place was Hayden Kaus with 57th place belonging to Christian Merrill.

The Gowanda Cheerleading squad was at the Elite Heat Fire & Ice FaceOff in North Tonawanda on Feb. 7. Gowanda placed 5th in the D2 large Varsity division. The Gowanda cheerleaders were also at the Sectional Cheer Finals at Lake Shore High School on Feb. 12.

in Bradford, Pa. on Feb. 8 and 9 for the CCAA RollOff Tournament. For the boys, Maple Grove finished first with 3,296 total pins.

Gowanda (3,116) was 8th and Silver Creek (2,936) was 18th. For the girls, the top spot went to Dunkirk (3,381) with Gowanda (3,226) in fourth. Silver Creek was 7th with 3,082 total pins. In 13th Place was Chautauqua Lake (2,937).

On Feb. 12, the Section VI Division 2 Wrestling Championships were held at Jamestown Community College. The top 5 finishers from each class qualified for the State Championships.

One Gowanda wrestler, Greg Reid (110), earned his spot in the Division 2 meet finishing the season with a 17-10 record. Springville was represented by two wrestlers, Griffin McKinsey (126) and Nick Brown (160).

Reid finished 7th in his weight class. After winning a decision over Luke Fay (Roy-Hart), he lost his next two matches by pin.

Those were to Aaron Raczka (Cheektowaga) in 0:43 and to Victor Cusatis (Wilson) in 2:43.

Stevens were recognized along with their parents. The first quarter of the game was close, ending with Gowanda down 11-9. Gowanda tied the score at 11 to open the second quarter and, from a 13-13 tie streaked to a 20-13 lead at halftime. Through a very slow third quarter, Gowanda grew their lead to 29-17. The final quarter was evenly played and the margin remained stable for a 40-29 Gowanda win. With 10 points, Aailyah Stevens led Gowanda. Gao:wisa:s Stevens and Scanlan each had nine points.

Feb. 10 found the Gowanda girls at Frewsburg in a rematch of a blowout loss earlier in the season. Gowanda was down 17-2 after one quarter and in a 31-8 hole by halftime. Through the rest of the game Frewsburg continued to roll and Gowanda continued to struggle. The final score was 67-18. Scanlan had Gowanda’s first 10 points in the game and led the team with 13. Chloe Luther had a 3-point basket and Asia Lindgren contributed two points.
