Spring break has arrived! With more than a week off, here’s your chance to explore all the area has to offer! Spend the weekdays visiting all those places you haven’t been to in awhile, or check out a unique event designed with kids in mind! On April 7 and 9, families are invited to join the twicemonthly Family Fun Tours at Albright-Knox. These 45-minute tours explore different themes based on works in the 1962 Building. Family Fun Tours are free but space is limited and preregistration is recommended. Village Board Upcoming Events Reorganizes for 2017-2018
for everyone in the upcoming months. April 15, Bunny Hop Head to the American Legion Post #362, 1 Legion Drive (off Center Rd near Beech Rd) in East Aurora for an Easterthemed run. Pre-registration
is $20 through April 14 and includes a premium gift for the first 900 registered runners, and free food and beer after the race. Awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female in each age group is a chocolate bunny. Visit www.earotary.org. April 22, Tortoise and the Hare 5K and Fun Run Sign up for this family event in Chestnut Ridge Park to benefit Earth Spirit Education. Run the 5K or walk in the park on a 1-mile course. Registration is $30 ($35 after April 1) for adults and $20 ($25 after April 1) for children/students ages 17 and under. Children 6 and under are free. SGI School Board Passes Proposed 2017-2018 Budget By Jennifer Weber
The Springville-Griffith Institute School Board voted to approve the proposed 20172018 budget in the amount of $36,841,911 at the board meeting held on Monday, April 3 at 7 p.m. Superintendent Kimberly Moritz noted that New York State granted a two-month extension until June 1 to approve the State Budget for the upcoming year. She spoke by phone with Senator Gallivan, who said not to be concerned about an interruption in the flow of funding for the year and noted there would be no movement on the budget See SGI Board page 6

The Village of Springville held its regular board meeting on April 3, 2017. After Mayor Krebs opened the meeting, Village Administrator Liz Melock asked for several resolutions to be passed regarding the annual audit: the procurement policy and investment policy. The only

A LOOK BACK: The United States Enters World War I By Derek M. Otto
April is the one month in United States History that is always highlighted by tragedy or war mongering. The Revolutionary War started on April 19, 1775, starting the American Revolution. South Carolina attacked Fort Sumter April 13, 1861. Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865. The U.S. declared war on Spain on April 25, 1898. FDR died and the Titanic sank on April 12. So it’s no surprise to learn that the United States entered the Great War in Europe on April 6, 1917. The Europeans had been fighting since war broke out in August 1914 when a Serbian Nationalist Group, the Black Hand, shot and killed Archduke Ferdinand of In 2011, Jacquie Shattner, a distant relative of mine, was researching the life of Lynn Thurber and asked me if I had a picture. Ironically, the Austro-Hungarian Empire when the Methodist Church was rededicating the baptismal font, and through secret alliances the I was going through a file of photos of a family related to the entire continent and eventually Thurbers. Lo and behold, folded in half, I found this picture with the name Lynn Thurber written on the back.
