Artists’ work colors the autumn in Allegany County

BY KATHRYN ROSS There is more to autumn’s colors in Allegany County than just trees.

For the last 33 years, local artisans have been adding their colorful creations to the autumnal hues by opening their studios to the public at the annual Allegany Artisans Studio Tour.

This once-a-year, two-day event includes artists from all reaches of the county and features artists and crafters working in clay, wood, fiber, jewelry, paint and other media. Many of the local artisans have established their reputations and business outside the county, but being true proponents of the county, they maintain their link to the area by opening their studios to the public for this event only. Although, if

contacted, many will open their studios for individual requests.

Organizers say that the Allegany Artisans Studio Tour is one of the oldest continuing events of its kind in the Northeast and it welcomes thousands of visitors to the county each year it is held.

Coming back after a COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, this year’s tour features more than 30 artisans and will take place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 16 and 17, starting with a preview the evening of Oct. 15, when 15 participating artists will open their studios for the preview from 5 to 8 p.m.

Theme basket auction benefits Allegany County SPCA

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — The blue light special at the former Kmart at Riverwalk Plaza will be the 27th annual SPCA theme basket auction Oct. 15-16.

The auction is the biggest fundraiser for the local SPCA and when fi rst held in the former Kmart building in 2019 it set a record.

“Our 25th annual auction in 2019 was our largest fundraiser ever,” Lynda Pruski, president of the SPCA

Serving Allegany County, said. “In 2020, due to the COVID restrictions, we were limited as to how many people could be in the building at the same time. We still did great, but 2019 was our record year.”

The 2019 auction was the fi rst to be held in the former Kmart building and a large parking area, coupled with curiosity, drew crowds to the event. The location is just off Route 19 (Bolivar Road).

baskets, but also features specialty, big-ticket items and items to please children and men.

“We will have our Man Cave, Kid’s Corner and our specialty item section,” Pruski said. “We will know more as we get closer to the auction as to our specialty items.”

She also said surprises are in store.

“This year is the SPCA’s 110th anniversary, so we will be celebrating at the theme basket auction and ... we can’t

tell you what’s in store yet,” Pruski said.

She added that along with all the goodies inside, there will be food trucks both on Friday and Saturday — Milliner’s Southern Smoke BBQ, GV Street Food and Bub’s Grub. There will also be barbecue food, hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, loaded tater tots, funnel cakes, walking tacos and other treats to choose from.

Allegany County foundation taking applications for Shop With A Cop BELMONT — The Allegany County Area Foundation welcomes applications for support from its Shop With A Cop Fund.

This endowed fund supports activities that provide cheer and encouragement to kids and families during the holiday season. SWAC grants are awarded to non-profit organizations (not to individuals). Priority consideration is given to programing that

involves law enforcement, such that participants can have a positive interaction with uniformed officers.

The SWAC fund is the legacy of the long-running Wellsville Shop With A Cop program. When that ended in fall 2019 with the closing of the Wellsville Kmart, the SWAC organizers moved their remaining funds to ACAF so the program could continue.

As the fund supports holiday-season activities, organizations are encouraged to apply by early November so that recipients can be given their funds in time for their holiday events.

Wellsville manufacturer part of major NY wind power development A Wellsville manufacturer will make the steel components for a major wind power development off Long Island, creating 100 new jobs.

Ljungström LLC on Truax Road will deliver the parts to an Albany-area port on the Hudson River as part of an $86 million wind development supply chain contract, the largest in New York state.

The project and contracts were announced Friday by Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration, a step forward in the state’s goal to develop at least 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind by 2035.

“This new partnership for New York’s Sunrise Wind project will infuse $86 million into New York’s economy which directly benefits New York companies and creates quality construction and manufacturing jobs in local communities,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

“We are going to be bold in how we achieve our climate goals and with our upcoming early 2022 offshore wind solicitation, New York will again demonstrate its national leadership in the acceleration to a green economy.”

The Port of Coeymans will serve as the assembly area for construction of wind turbine platforms, which will support the Sunrise Wind offshore project off the east end of Montauk Point.

A consortium including the Orsted wind turbine company, Eversource utility

firm, as well as Riggs Distler & Co. construction will be working at a port facility along the Hudson in southern Albany County.

From there, the wind tower foundations will be shipped down the Hudson River by barge to their installation points off the coast.

“Ljungstrom is very excited for this opportunity to work together with our partners to help them successfully execute the first offshore wind project for New York,” Matt Ferris, Ljungstrom managing director, said. “This is a very important milestone in our company’s strategy to diversify our business from fossil fuel power generation over the last 98 years, into the emerging green/renewable market for offshore wind power generation.”

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, who was in Wellsville Monday to tout the new contract for Ljungstrom, called the wind project and its

attendant economic benefits “tremendous news” and “a win-win-win.”

The New York senator said the project will be a win for the environment, a win for the state’s economy and a win for organized labor, which will be a part of the manufacturing process.

Earlier this month, Schumer announced more than $1.4 million in federal funding to support workplace training efforts through Alfred State College.

The funding through the U.S. Department of Labor, in partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission, is designed to meet training needs for specialized welding skills for both Ljungström and Alstom in Hornell.

The Ljungström news was welcome in the Wellsville area, which continues to rebuild its manufacturing jobs base in the wake of Siemens Energy closing the former Dresser-Rand operations there in April 2020.

First Trinity Lutheran in Wellsville brings back sauerkraut supper WELLSVILLE — Again this year, First Trinity Lutheran Church at 470 N. Main St. will host the community at its Annual Election Day Sauerkraut Dinner.

This tradition goes back for more than 100 years.

“With Covid last year,” said Pastor Eric Ash, “out of necessity we had take-out meals only and had to make other changes.”

The congregation was surveyed as to whether they wished to continue the venerable tradition and would there be enough volunteers to make it feasible.

“What we heard from our people was that they defi nitely wanted to do it and do it the with traditional menu,” Ash said. “They said they would put in whatever effort was necessary to make it happen.”

The traditional menu includes roast pork, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, stuffi ng and apple or pumpkin pie.

Preparations began on Sept. 19 when more than 40 volunteers processed almost a ton of cabbage on a Sunday afternoon. The bulk of the work is still done by hand: peeling, chopping, grating, salting, and pounding. That cabbage is now fragrantly fermenting in crocks in the church basement.

“The supper has always been more about fellowship than anything else,” Ash said. “We want to give back to our community and say to them, ‘We are here for you and, we want to serve you and enjoy your company.’”

Proceeds will be donated to local charities.

Fresh, uncooked, bagged sauerkraut will also be on sale from 8 a.m. until it is sold out for $3 for 2 pounds.

Opt in or out: Wellsville trustees still weighing marijuana decision

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — Village trustees are still unsure whether to opt in or out regarding marijuana dispensaries or onsite consumption licenses within its jurisdiction.

At the Wellsville Village Board meeting Monday night, Police Chief Tim O’Grady reminded trustees they must make a decision concerning the legal selling of marijuana within the village.

Based on state legislation passed in March, the New York Office of Cannabis Management states, “Cities, towns and villages can optout of allowing adult use cannabis retail dispensaries or on-site consumption licenses (marijuana bars) from locating within their jurisdictions; however, municipalities cannot optout of adult use legalization.”

Possession and use of cannabis by adults 21 years of age or older is legal in New York state.

To opt-out of allowing adult use cannabis retail dispensaries or onsite consumption licenses a municipality must pass a local law by Dec. 31. This means that if a municipality has already passed a local law or resolution prohibiting adult-use cannabis licensees from operating in its jurisdiction, the municipality will have to pass a new local law conforming to the opt-out requirements outlined in the MRTA if the municipality still chooses to opt-out.

If a municipality does not opt-out

by Dec. 31, the municipality will be unable to opt out at a future date.

However, at any time a municipality may opt back in to allow adult use retail dispensaries and or on-site consumpt ion licenses by repealing the local law which established the prohibition.

Wellsville’s trustees said they do not yet have enough information to make a decision and are therefore leaning toward opting out.

“You can’t opt out of something that you don’t know anything about,” Trustee Mike Roeske said, although when the subject was brought up in August, he suggested that opting in could result in new revenues for the village.

Mayor Randy Shayler said, “Opting out is a temporary decision, but I agree, we can’t make a decision about something we don’t have any information about.”

He went on to say that he had texted the village attorney for advice concerning the new law and the opt out decision, adding, “At our next meeting we can discuss putt ing a plan in place.”

Roeske added, “If we opt out, we can always opt back in.”

In other business, the board noted, there will be a public meeting at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 21 in the exhibition room at the David A. Howe Library

for a discussion of the New York State Landmark Society’s Historic Resource Survey in regard to designating parts of the village a historic district.

The suggestion came up when several applications for historic renovations resulted from the Genesee Valley Rural Revitalization grant program application process, which took place in June. No grants were earmarked for any of the Wellsville applications. Members of the Landmark Society will also be meeting with those applicants who desire clarification of their proposal’s shortfalls.

It was also noted that the board received an application for a new hair-styling business. Taren Drake proposes opening Salon 406 at 406 N. Main St. by Nov. 1.

However, Roeske said there might be a problem with zoning for that site, so the matter will be taken before the planning board and zoning board of appeals prior to any decision.

Alfred U monitoring water after testing found elevated levels of lead ALFRED — Recent drinking water quality monitoring conducted by Alfred University has found elevated levels of lead in drinking water in Kenyon, Davis and Shults halls and the Brick.

University officials are concerned about the health of its residents because lead can cause serious health problems if too much enters the body from drinking water or other sources, especially for pregnant women and children 6 years and younger.

Mark Whitehouse, Alfred’s director of communications, said the university recently began routine on-campus samplings of drinking water following the transfer of responsibility for maintenance of the water infrastructure from the village of Alfred. The fi rst routine sampling occurred in December and all sample results were below applicable regulatory limits.

Whitehouse said the second sampling occurred in June, approximately 35 days

after the buildings were vacated for the summer break.

The amount of time that water sits unused can impact sample results. Of the 20 samples taken, five exceeded the action level for public

water supplies of 15 parts per billion (ppb).

Accordingly, Whitehouse said, in an effort to evaluate whether the samples from June were impacted by the

water sitt ing unused, the university has already collected new samples at all 20 locations. Each of the 20 new sample results was below the 15ppb limit

Whitehouse said the university is retesting water samples and ongoing monitoring will be performed on the cycles prescribed by the Allegany County Department of Health.

Wellsville Part of $200 Million Windmill Production Investment

New York State Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin announced a project that will bring hundreds of jobs to Wellsville with a reportedly $200 million investment.

The Wellsville Sun has learned a contract was awarded to Ljungstrom Arvos Custom Manufacturing Solutions of Wellsville (the former Air Preheater) for an offshore windmill project. The state (NYSERDA) awarded the contract to Equinor Wind US LLC for its 816-megawatt Empire Wind Project and Sunrise Wind LLC (a joint venture of Ørsted A/S and Eversource Energy) for its “880-megawatt Sunrise Wind Project to deliver clean, taffordable, renewable energy to New Yorkers.”

“I see this as being very long term because they just entered into the agreement with Alfred State that Sen. Schumer got involved in to train welders,” Wellsville Mayor Randy Shayler said.

“They are looking to train a workforce and get them specifically trained for their product line."

Cummins Cider Mill closed for third season amid worker shortage

BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY PORTVILLE — Those looking to pick up some of the region’s most popular doughnuts and apple cider this autumn must wait yet another year.

The doors of Cummins Cider Mill on Route 417 east of Portville are closed for the third fall season in a row.

Long-time owner Donald Leilous explained that lack of workers is the primary reason for not reopening again — as was the case in 2019 and 2020.

“I need to have 30 to 35 people, but I only got 12 applications,” he told the Times Herald on Friday.

In 2020, the safety precautions needed amid the coronavirus pandemic was also a big factor in keeping the renowned business closed.

But a year later Leilous said there just aren’t enough workers, citing — at least in part — the several rounds of COVID-19 stimulus checks and unemployment benefits.

“I talk to a lot of business people and it’s the same

thing,” he added. “There’s just no help.”

However, Leilous said he has no intentions of throwing in the towel for good.

“Hopefully, we’ll get going again next year,” he said.

“Maybe we can start something up in the spring.”

The cider mill had been a fi xture near the AlleganyCattaraugus county line since 1958, but the Cummins name in cider dates back to the Great Depression.

In 1932, Verne Cummins began selling his homemade

cider door-to-door in Salamanca before opening his fi rst cider mill in Allegany in 1936. After a 12year hiatus, he established Cummins Cider Mill at its current location, selling the site in the mid-1980s.

The shop celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2018, the last year that Cummins Cider Mill was open. Leilous, who also operates Southern Tier Polaris in Westons Mills, has headed the operation for 16 of those seasons.

Historically, the business

has operated from the fi rst week of September until Thanksgiving — when apples are coming off the trees on the fruit-bearing plains along Lake Ontario, where the cider mill has typically sourced its apples.

Looking ahead to 2022, the building isn’t expected to sit quiet. Leilous said he has

some ideas in mind, but no defi nite renovations or updates are planned yet.

“I’m going to hang in there,” he said. “There’s not a problem with me making an effort at it again next year.

It’s got to be better next year, doesn’t it?”

Recommended men’s health screenings

en need to be proactive in regard to monitoring their overall health. This includes seeing their doctors for regular wellness visits and keeping up with recommended screenings to catch and/or prevent illnesses. While men and women can experience the same conditions, health experts recommend specific tests and screenings for men in various age groups.

Johns Hopkins Medicine advises that men are at risk for certain conditions, including several types of cancer, such as prostate, colon and lung cancers. However, Harvard Medical School states men are less likely than women to get routine physical exams and screenings. An American Academy of Family Physicians survey found that 55 percent of men had not seen their doctors for a physical exam in the

previous year, even though 40 percent had a least one chronic condition.

While many screenings are recommended starting at age 40 or 50, men should discuss family histories and risk factors to determine if testing should begin earlier. The following are important health screenings to consider.

• Prostate-specific antigen test: A PSA is a blood test that measures how much prostate-specific antigen is in the blood. Measuring PSA has been a standard for prostate cancer screening for 30 years.

General guidelines indicate PSA screening begin at age 55. However, having at least one fi rst-degree relative with prostate cancer could necessitate earlier testing.

• Colorectal cancer screening: Colorectal cancer screening generally occurs between ages 50 and 75. Tests include

fecal occult blood tests, stool DNA tests, colonoscopy, and contrast barium enemas.

Doctors will determine which tests are applicable and how often to conduct them.

• Diabetes: Men who have a BMI over 25 are overweight and should consider a diabetes screening. In addition, blood pressure above 130/80 mm Hg or other diabetes risk factors could require a blood test to check for elevated glucose levels.

• Abdominal aortic aneurysm: Guidelines recommend a one-time screening for men who have smoked between the ages of 65 and 75.

• Hepatitis B and C: Men are at increased risk for infection if they have had unprotected sex with multiple partners, received blood transfusions or transplanted organs before June 1992, are healthcare workers who have been stuck by needles, or travel to regions with high rates of the

hepatitis B virus.

• Lung cancer screening: Men should undergo a lung cancer screening through low-dose computed tomography if they are over age 55, have a 30-pack-per-year smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years.

• Testicular cancer screening: Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers among young men, says Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Early screening can include self-checks. Routinely checking the testicles for any lumps or unusual features while showering can help detect testicular cancer.

Doctors may order a painless ultrasound if something is discovered.

Health screenings are an important component of men’s health care. Now is the time to have a discussion with the doctor about which screenings are necessary.

ccording to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, roughly 25,000 home fires causing more than 300 deaths occur in the United States each year.

Homeowners can keep themselves and their families safe by being aware of the dangers around a home that can contribute to house fires and the preventive measures that can reduce the risk for such fires.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the following are the most common factors that can lead to fires around the house.

• Cooking accidents: It can take mere seconds for grease splatters or an overheated pan or pot to cause a fire. Stay in the kitchen at all times when cooking.

• Heaters: Have furnaces and other heating appliances regularly inspected. Keep portable heaters away from anything that can burn, including curtains and furniture. Do not leave portable

heaters running while you are sleeping or out of the home.

• Smoking: Smoking inside a home can lead to fires. Some people forget to extinguish the smoke or embers may fall, while butts may smoulder for hours before causing flames to form.

• Washers and dryers:

Between 2010 and 2014, American fire departments responded to an estimated 15,970 home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year.

Mechanical or electrical failure or malfunction was involved in the vast majority of home fires involving washing machines. Failure

to clean dryers also can cause fires to ignite.

• Candles: Candles can add ambiance to a room and are commonly used in decorations, but they also can be a fire hazard. Candles easily can be knocked over by children, pets and others.
