Wellsville’s Music on the Lawn back this year

BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — Dave Miller was the first performer to grace the Music on the Lawn stage since 2019 and the first musician of the 25th anniversary of the summer music series.

Due to COVID-19, and just like a lot of other events this past year, the annual summer concert series in Wellsville was canceled for the first time in its 25-year

history. MOTL was founded in1996 to provide free, musical entertainment during the summer months for the people of Wellsville and the outlying communities to enjoy.

In 2021 the series will consist of eight performances at 7 p.m. Thursdays until Aug. 12 on the lawn of the David A. Howe Library.

The seven performers entertaining this year with Miller are, on:

• July 1 — Beatlegacy, a tribute band hailing from Philadelphia, Pa. playing Beatles’ hits.

• July 8 — Wingman, a local 70s rock and roll band with Jim Knapp and Cort Dunham with other local favorites.

• July 15 — Genesee River Rats, a country music band with Jason Marsden at the helm.

• July 22 — Woodshed Profits, an Americana music

band featuring the musical stylings of Dan and Cort Dunham.

• July 29 — Buffalo Rose, a six-piece band out of Pittsburgh playing a variety of music.

• Aug. 5 — Folk Night with local entertainers Bob and Gena Decker and John Spicer and Michelle Libertone.

• Aug. 12 – Stick Tights a classic rock and roll band hailing from Olean closes the

regular season.

MOTL Chairman Shaun Derrick who along with Jason Marsden organized the lineup for this year’s MOTL said, “Since we had to cancel last year, we wanted to come out strong this year to entertain the people of Wellsville.”

According to Marsden.

“The committee is trying to bring back Music on the Lawn in a big way with a variety of music provided by a

lot of local entertainers with a lot of talent.”

Even though MOTL has been around for 25 years, it is an independent effort that does not receive funding from the David A. Howe Public Library, the Town or Village of Wellsville, or any other agency. It is supported by donations from the Wellsville community. Each

Claire Benham earned the title of valedictorian of the Class of 2021. She is the daughter of Kirsten and Kurt Benham of Cuba.

During her time at CubaRushford Claire served as

National Honor Society president, Student Council president, and class president in grades 9-12. In addition to her officer positions, Claire was a member of the volleyball team, tennis team, ski club, and Spanish club. She participated in Scholastic Challenge, Youth Court, and was a volunteer for the middle school GLEAM club.

Santaro Scholarship Golf Classic at Turning Stone Resort Casino were also able to learn more about Alfred State College’s Doc Bruce Campaign at a post-event reception.

Held each year in June at the golf course at Turning Stone in Verona, the Golf Classic attracts more than 350 participants, according to a description of the event on the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of New York State website. The AGC presents the Golf Classic each year.

During the event, Alfred State employees worked the lunch tables on the courses and provided information on the Doc Bruce Campaign, which was discussed in greater detail during the reception that followed. This campaign seeks to honor the memory of Alfred State Professor Emeritus and beloved mentor William “Doc” Bruce, DE, PE, as well as create a state-of-the-art laboratory to support students in the Civil Engineering Technology Department and help develop new industry workforce. This facility will provide outstanding experiences in laboratory and field testing of various construction materials, focusing on soils, concrete, and asphalt.

Leading the campaign are two of Dr. Bruce’s former students who graduated from Alfred State in 1977 and are now industry leaders – Jimmy Smith, president of Advance Testing Company, and Gary Hill, president of Union Concrete and Construction Corporation.

Both Hill and Smith spoke at the reception that followed the Golf Classic event, where they shared the scope and goals of the Doc Bruce Campaign, which has so far raised over $260,000 toward its $500,000 goal.

Additionally, this fundraising effort is part of Alfred State’s Major Gifts Campaign, which is looking to raise $8 million for athletics, new programs, scholarships, technology, and the greatest needs of the college. To date, the Major

Gifts Campaign has raised $6,1 million.

Alfred State Director of Development Jason Sciotti said, “With the help of these two passionate alumni, Jimmy and Gary, we are well on way to building a construction materials laboratory that will change the lives of our civil engineering students and the future of Alfred State.”

This training will provide real-world simulation training in commercial-level equipment to enable students to advance in the field through all levels of the EPA-608 certification by developing residential and commercial service experience.

Jeffrey Stevens, dean of Alfred State’s School of Applied Technology campus,

said, “I am very excited to be able to integrate this training into an already successful and prospering program.

This will enhance and expand the employment opportunities for our graduates.”

Refrigeration maintenance and repair skills are in high demand across western New York, so this training will help meet this demand and help establish a welltrained workforce. Students will complete course work and train for certification at Alfred State’s School of

Applied Technology campus in Wellsville.

In addition to ARC funds, local sources will provide $64,850, bringing the total project funding to $214,850 (or 30.2 percent from local funds and 69.8 percent from federal funds). Alfred State would like to thank the Southern Tier West board and staff members for their coordination of the ARC application and local review process.

AUTOMOTI VE AU-NYC grads lauded for perseverance, service during pandemic ALFRED, NY — Alfred University held a virtual commencement ceremony Thursday evening, June 17, to recognize the 265 graduates from the AU-NYC program’s Class of 2021.

Graduates from the AUNYC program earned master’s degrees in School and Mental Health Counseling and Public Administration, or completed Advanced Certification programs in Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, at Alfred University’s satellite campuses in New York City.

Alfred University awarded 150 master’s degrees in School and Mental Health counseling; 30 master’s degrees in Public Administration; 75 Advanced Certificates in Mental Health Counseling; and 10 Advanced Certificates

in School Counseling.

Several speakers participated in Thursday’s commencement program, touching on a themes centered on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most students in the AU-NYC program are nontraditional students—professionals, many with families, working as counselors and administrators in the public education and health care fields while pursuing their graduate degrees. The New York metropolitan area was among the hardest hit by COVID, and many students enrolled in the AU-NYC program were among the frontline workers significantly impacted by the pandemic.

COVID had a profound effect on the academic journeys of each graduate.

“To say this was a unique

year would be an understatement in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of you started the program in regular in-person classes but have spent the last year-anda-half attending virtually.

You’ve done this while balancing work from home with your family responsibilities,” commented Jay Cerio, dean Alfred University’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies. “The fact you’ve accomplished this makes this an even more remarkable achievement, especially considering how many of you were touched by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of you lost friends and loved ones to the pandemic. This particular achievement is hopefully your tribute to them and their memories.”

Driving under the influence hits drivers in the pocketbook A survey from DrivingLaw.org asked readers in various parts of the country who had been arrested for a first-offense DUI how much they paid to resolve their case. The survey found that the average cost was $6,500. However, that figure does not include lost wages, which survey respondents reported totaling $4,400 on average.

Village-wide yard sales coming to Wellsville WELLSVILLE — Clean out that attic, basement and garage and get ready for Wellsville’s first-ever villagewide yard sales scheduled for July 9-11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Earlier in the month the village board was so impressed with Kathleen Murphy’s suggestion that the village needed to have a village-wide yard sale, that it eliminated the fee for yard sale permits and asked only that those holding yard sales get an application to register.

Murphy told the board how overwhelmed she was when she saw the turnout for village-wide yard sales in Andover and asked the board why Wellsville was not cashing in on the cash cow that other villages across the county benefit from. “I think it would be a good thing for the community,” she said.

In the past the only semblance of a village-wide yard sale took place with the annual Sunnydale Yard Sales which coincided with September’s Immaculate

Conception School Fun Fair and the Ancient Order of Hibernians Car Show. Last year, due to Covid-19 the Sunnydale Yard Sale was cancelled and at first word it was thought to be cancelled this year as well. But organizers rallied and the Sunnydale Yard Sales will be taking place.

As for Murphy she relayed to the board that she would like to see the second weekend in July become the date for the village-wide yard sale to take place every year.

That date, coincidently, coincides with the annual Balloon Rally Parade, one of the biggest parades in the county. However, that along with the Great Wellsville Balloon Rally have once again been cancelled because of COVID-19. Chairman Brad Thompson said there was not enough time to plan the rally after COVID-19 restrictions were eased.

As of recent reports on Facebook, Murphy relates that, things are going well for the inaugural event. She

reported that several dozen applications have already been received.

She said, “Yard sale applications are available at the village office located at 23 North Main Street I know for people that work during the day it is hard for them to get there, so I will have application and Flyers on my front steps as weather allows. Message her on Facebook to get the address. She has also posted applications rules and flyers in an album on the Facebook page.

“I hope people will feel free to print in hand it out,” she said.

The application process helps Murphy to create a map that can be used to find the yard sales throughout the village.

She also said that she has been asked by several merchants who want to participation and says that they are absolutely welcome, and she appreciates all of them for helping and being positive about this event.

“Let’s hope that we have great weather for the yard sale weekend,” she said.

Alfred State applauds Orvis Award winners and dean’s list students Alfred State College congratulates its students who were recently named Orvis Award recipients, as well as those who were named to the dean’s list for spring 2021.

To achieve dean’s list status, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours for the semester and earned a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) out of a possible 4.0. For the most recent semester, the dean’s list includes 923 students. In addition, 290 of these students achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA. Additionally, five graduating Alfred State students earned the Orvis Award for Excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. This award honors Paul B. Orvis, a former president of Alfred State, and State University of New York dean for two-year colleges.

Alfred State’s annual golf tournament raises over $30,000 For the seventh year in a row, dozens of golfers came together to have fun and support Alfred State College by playing in the school’s annual Pioneers Drive for the Development Fund golf tournament.

Presented by Mach Architecture, this year’s tournament took place June 18 at the Wellsville Country Club. A total of 31 teams competed and raised more than $30,000 in cash and gifts in kind. Proceeds from the event will help fund student scholarships, athletics, and other needs of the college.

Earning the coveted blue jacket as the winners of the golf tournament were the members of the Campus Construction team – Kevin Donaghue, John Langdon, Jason Hanon, and Tim McCardle. The second-place Maple City Savings team included Nick Kelley, Julianna Gibson, Raymie Auman, and Dustin Kelley, while the Level Financial team of Steve Elwell, Andrew Reisman,

Nick Smith, and Andy Smith placed third.

The top three teams took home $500, $300, and $200, respectively. In addition, the tournament featured a silent auction, a number of skills prizes, and a barbecue.

Event sponsors ($2,500) this year included Pepsi Co.; Manning & Napier; U&S Services; Otis Eastern; Savarino; Pathfinder Engineers & Architects.; Corning, Inc.; and Laborers No. 621. Eagle sponsors ($1,000) included IBEW Local No. 86, Elderwood of Hornell, West Herr Ford, and Lincoln & Mercury.

Contest sponsors ($500) were National Fuel, Decorator’s Choice, and Union Concrete.

Additionally, the event featured 25 hole sponsors ($150).

Alfred State Director of Development Jason Sciotti said, “It was great to be able to get the 2021 edition of our Pioneer Drive for the Development Fund golf event

back to the way we want it to be: a huge group of supporters and players, fun activities taking place on the course during the day, and interactions that brought out so many smiles and laughs.

The highlight of the day was a ‘Beat the AD (athletic director)’ challenge on a par-3 hole for a chance to win cash. We were very excited to offer over 65 door prizes at this year’s tournament and would like to say thanks to our amazing donors and sponsors.”

Sciotti also extended thanks to everyone else who helped make the tournament a success.

“I can’t thank our Alfred State staff and the Wellsville Country Club enough for all the work put into this day,” he said. “The funds being raised will go to the Alfred State athletics program, scholarships, and the future of the college for the betterment of our students. We’re already looking forward to Pioneer Drive 2022!”

BELMONT — Thousands of Allegany County Republicans hit the polls to choose their upcoming slate of candidates for November.

All vote results are unofficial, and will be certified by the Allegany County Board of Elections. They include early voting returns, but do not include absentee ballots — if postmarked by Tuesday, they may arrive within seven days and be counted in the final tally.

Four of five Board of Legislature districts saw primaries as voters in Districts II, III, IV and V selected three Republicans to go on the ballot Nov. 2.

District II John Ricci received 307 votes, Dwight Mike Healy received 304 votes, and Gretchen Hanchett received 294 votes to lead the polls.

Harold W. Mitchell received 238, David A. Decker received 235, and there were three write-ins.

Decker, Ricci and Healy are incumbents. District II includes the towns of Amity, Clarksville, Cuba, Friendship, New Hudson and Ward, and the villages of Belmont and Cuba.

District III Debra A. Root received 430 votes, Dwight R. Fanton received 382 and Adam Cyr received 328 to lead in the polls. William G. Dibble II received 302, Scott R. Burt received 261 and one write-in was reported.

Dibble, Root and Fanton are incumbents. District

III includes the towns of Alma, Bolivar, Genesee, Independence, Scio, Willing and Wirt; and the villages of Bolivar and Richburg.

District IV James Rumfelt received 340 votes, Gary Barnes received 233, and Steve Havey received 229 to lead in the polls. Greg McAndrew received 215 and one write-in was reported.

Barnes and Havey are incumbents. District IV includes the towns and villages of Andover and Wellsville.

District V Janice L. Burdick received 250 votes, William Brooke Harris received 249 and Philip B. Curran received 241 votes to lead in the polls.

Dustin L. Gordon received 96 and one write-in was reported.

Harris, Burdick and Curran are incumbents.

District 5 includes the towns of Alfred, Allen, Almond, Birdsall, Burns, Grove and West Almond; and the villages of Alfred, Almond and Canaseraga.

Town races include: Alma Steve Dickerson Sr. received 42 votes for the town supervisor nomination.

Tom Dannheim received 18, Shaun Taylor received 30, David Shields received 29 and there were three write-ins.

Heather Trask received 64 votes for the nomination for town clerk/tax collector.

Paula Clayson and David

R. Stilson received 66 votes for the nomination for town justice. Paula Clayson received 51 votes.

Daniel Ford received 73 votes for the nomination for highway superintendent.

Ricky Smith received 48, and there were three write-ins.

Almond Julie Philips received 79 votes for the nomination for town clerk/tax collector.

Shelly Stevens received 14.

Bryan Snyder received 75 votes and Jo Anne Freeland received 60 for two nominations for town board. Debra Castle Harvey received 45 votes.

Birdsall David M. Trickler received 24 votes for the nomination for town justice. Karl E. Schmidt II received five.

Patricia Shultz received 23 votes and David L Butler 19 for two nominations for town board. Samuel Nicoletta received nine.

Independence Scot Acomb received 67 votes for the nomination for highway superintendent.

Rick Graves received 26, and one write-in was reported.

Rushford Ken McElheny received 48 votes and Deborah Aumick 33 for two nominations for town board. Will Tucker II received 30.

Wellsville Michael Miller received 175 votes and Patricia Graves received 155 for two nominations for town board. Maria Dannheim received 130.
