Allegany County’s Memorial Day events

BY KATHRYN ROSS Memorial Day in Allegany County will be marked by two celebrations leading up to the day and several more reverent memorials across the county.

Due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 restrictions, some communities in the county are foregoing parades and will mark Memorial Day with small ceremonies at local cemeteries and at war memorials in parks — but not in Belfast and Belmont.

The two communities have set aside days prior to Memorial Day to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Herbert DeLong American Legion Post 808 in Belmont, while in Belfast the annual festivities and ceremony for the Bare-Knuckle Boxing Museum Hall of Fame Induction will be taking

place.

In Belmont, the 100th birthday celebration for the Herbert W. DeLong Post 808 American Legion Parking Lot Party will get started at 2 p.m. Saturday next to the building. All events are open to the community.

DJ Rod Evans will entertain. There will be 50/50 raffles, kid’s games, bowling, horseshoes, corn hole and a bake sale. At 9:30 p.m. the Hintz of Thunder band will perform. There will also be a fi reworks display, which will be visible from within the village Belmont. Social distancing guidelines apply.

No parade has been scheduled and memorial services by the Legion will take place in Memorial Park on Memorial Day. North on Route 19 in Belfast the annual festivities

for the Bare-Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame will be taking place throughout the weekend starting with a car show at 5:30 p.m. Friday on Hughes Street, followed by a street dance in the park at 8 p.m.

Yard sales will take place throughout the weekend.

On Memorial Day there will be a parade at 11 a.m. followed by a salute to veterans in the park. There will be a chicken barbecue at the fi re department at noon.

Angelica Memorial Day services will take place on Monday with the traditional march along Main Street to the Until the Day Dawn Cemetery for ceremonies at the Civil War monument.

The parade will step off from the intersection of West Main and Olean Street at 9 a.m.

In Canaseraga a parade

has been scheduled for 9 a.m.

Memorial Day followed by a service honoring veterans at the American Legion Fawcett Post 1582. The fi refighters will host a chicken barbecue at noon until gone.

In Cuba, a Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service for veterans in the Genesee Parkway park.

While no Memorial Day parade has been scheduled in Scio on Sunday, all eyes will be turned to the Coca Cola 600 or the NTT INDYCAR Series Indianapolis 500 where two drivers will be honoring the memory of Scio’s Medal of Honor recipient, U.S. Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham.

ANGELICA — “The Fair with the Country Smile” left many beaming on May 19 after it was reported the Allegany County Fair is on for July.

In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, the Allegany County Agricultural Society, which operates the fair and fairgrounds, announced dates for the event after months of concern over COVID-19 restrictions.

“We are excited to be working on plans for the 176th Allegany County Fair,” officials said. “Please be patient as we work on our fair schedule. We will be posting our plans as they are fi nalized.”

The fair will run from July 19 to 24, officials reported In late May 2020, officials made the call to postpone the 176th running of the fair.

Belmont Auxiliary plans flag project to honor veterans For Memorial Day the Belmont American Legion Auxiliary will place flags in memory of deceased veterans in Legion Park on the Genesee River. Each flag will have the deceased veteran’s

name, branch of service in which he/she served in, and the name of the person who sponsored the flag.

Jones Memorial Hospital to host Field of Flags

WELLSVILLE — Each year, Jones Memorial Hospital joins with the Wellsville American Legion Post 702 and Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Riders to transform the front lawn at the hospital into a Field of Flags.

What began eight years ago as a way to honor the memory of veterans who have died, the field has become a tradition and remains in place from Armed Forces Day (May 15) through Memorial Day (May 31).

Each flag in the Field of Flags will have a card with he name of the deceased service member and branch of ervice, as well as the name of he person who sponsored the flag.

However, the American Legion and VFW will mark the day with memorial services in Veterans Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Services will then take place in Woodlawn and Sacred Heart cemeteries.

For a step back in history visit the refurbished Johnson Cemetery where the graves of Civil War and other veterans have been decorated.

Wellsville’s $31.57M school budget passed easily WELLSVILLE — While the voting turnout was less than in previous years, residents voted six times more yes than no to approve the Wellsville Central School District budget vote Tuesday.

The 2021-22 proposed budget passed handily with a vote tally of 222-36.

“The number of voters has been going down for the last few years,” said Dawn Youmans, district clerk.

The budget for 2021-22 is about $31.57 million, a reduction of $644,401 from the current school year’s budget.

Both the tax levy and the budget represent a 2% decrease for residents. The tax levy reduction is $164,441 in local tax dollars.

Superintendent David Foster said the reductions were largely achieved through the cost of equipment expenses for the capital project being reimbursed by the Smart Schools Bond Act funded by the state.

Proposition 2 calling for the purchase of two 70-passenger conventional buses, at a total maximum cost of $300,000, was also approved by voters, 212-47.

Three candidates ran unopposed for the three seats they currently occupy on the board of education. Heather Gill received 218 votes, Bryan Gamache received 224 votes and Ronald “Keith” Loines received 218 votes.

The official reorganization

of the board of education and acceptance of the district wide vote will take place prior to the regular board meeting on July 6.

In other school district business, there will be no school on May 28-31 for Memorial Day. However, the district will be hosting the annual District Art Show at the David A. Howe Library May 28-June 10. While there will be no opening night reception, the show will be open to the public based on the library’s hours and policy.

The annual Senior Art Show, showcasing the work of 12 graduating students, will take place at the secondary school from June 8-21.

Senior trip activities will take place over three days starting June 18 when the seniors will travel to Darian Lake.

Graduation is scheduled to take place at the Wellsville Municipal Airport at 7 p.m.

June 25.

The last day of school for regular students is June 24.

ELSEWHERE IN Allegany County: Bolivar-Richburg The $20.48 million budget was approved, 98-17. A resolution for new buses was approved, 104-12, and a resolution to support the Genesee Library was approved, 93-20.

Michelle Clark received 101, Erin Baldwin received 77 and Michelle Robinson received 40 votes for three open seats.

Cuba-Rushford Voters approved a $23.98 million budget by a 148-6 margin. The budget includes a 5.72% increase in the spending plan, but no change in the tax levy. Voters also approved $40,225 allocation for the Rushford Free Library with a $375 increase, 148-6; a collection of $130,468 for the Cuba Circulating Library with no increase, 149-5; and purchasing two buses for up to $262,805, 143-11.

School board candidate Paul Young was elected to one open seat, receiving 147 votes.

Friendship Voters approved a $10.55 million budget with a 48-4 tally. The budget includes a 0.64% decrease in the spending plan and no change in the tax levy. Voters also approved the creation of a $500,000 capital improvement reserve fund by a 45-7 margin.

Craig Plaisted was elected to the school board, receiving 44 votes.

Genesee Valley Voters approved the $17.54 million budget, 157-38.

Proposition No. 1 – Approve a 64-passenger bus, was approved 154-40. Proposition No. 2 – Approve Angelica & Belmont Library Tax, was approved 173-24.

Eric A. Knapp received 147 votes and Fred Grusendorf received 160 votes for threeyear terms. Timothy Hand received 142 votes for a twoyear term.
