Allegany County latest legislature to condemn new gun laws
BY BOB CLARK
BELMONT — Coun ty legislatures in West ern New York continue to join growing calls for changes to the state’s latest gun laws.
The Allegany County Board of Legislators voted earlier this month to support a nonbinding resolution opposing changes to concealed carry laws that went into effect earlier this month, echoing a grow

However, Healy noted the reso lution also served as criticism of other recent

The specific law tar geted by the resolution went into effect Sept. 1, and was one of two new laws going into effect that week. On Sept. 4, a law requiring a license to purchase semiauto matic rifles also went into

It is free. The clinics are made possible through donations and the Mu tual of Omaha.

Did you know cars actually drive on three tires?
drivers who plan to use one set all year long and need winter protection - for example, people who live in temperate climates but drive north or to areas of high ele vation. Those who live in southern locales may use them as protection against the half-dozen snowy or slushy days each year.
True north demands a true winter tire
(BPT) — Did you know that cars actually ride on three tires?
No, this isn’t an ar ticle about tricycles. It’s about a major miscon ception that takes place where the rubber meets the road. Most drivers have no idea that there are three kinds of tires - and what they don’t know might be hurting them. It’s vital that drivers understand all three tire varieties, so they can choose the right fit for their weather and lifestyles. With that in mind, here’s a helpful overview of all three: all-season, winter and a hybrid of the twoall-weather tires.
The tiresknowseveryone
Look beneath your vehicle. Chances are you’re driving a set of all-season tires. They’re the most common tire produced and driven in North America, and they’re likely what comes on your new car from the dealership. Their name -
“all-season” - might lead drivers to believe they’re built for all weather greatslickandpuckslikeCelsius).Fahrenheitdrop-andbecomethoselonger.thatrubbermeansdurabilitytypicallyAll-seasonSurprisingly,conditions.theyaren’t!tiresareproducedwithinmind.ThattheyhavehardercompoundshelpthemlastabitUnfortunately,hardcompoundsevenharder-waylesseffectiveoncetemperaturesbelow45degrees(7degreesThinkofitdrivingonhockey-theywon’tgrip,willslideoncoldorsurfaces.All-seasontiresareasolutionfordriverswholiveinplaceswherewinterweatherrarelyvisits.DriversintheSunBeltcanoftengetawaywithusingthemyear-round,andthey’reagreatsolutionforthosewhoonlyusetheminspringandsummer,thenswitchtowintertiresinthefrigidmonths.Butdon’tbefooledbytheirname-in
many areas of North America, all-season tires are more like three-sea son tires.
A four-seasonsolution
If all-season tires aren’t intended for use in all four seasons, then what is? Nokian Tyres invented the first all-weather passenger tire two decades ago. The name is similar, but the function is different: an all-weather tire is an upgrade for drivers who visit winter, or see winter visit them.
Unlike its counterparts,all-seasonall-weath er products are certified for use in winter weath er. That certification is
called the three-peak mountain snowflake, and drivers can find it on the sidewall of all-weather and winter tires. At the same time, they’re still intended to be a true four-sea son option with good performance in rain and heat. One example, the Nokian Tyres WR G4, has a soft yet durable compound with an asymmetrical pattern with one side built for winter and the other for summer.All-weather tires aren’t supposed to replace a winter tire for drivers who live in strong winter con ditions. Rather, they represent an upgrade for
For ultimate winter safety, nothing beats a dedicated winter tire. While all-weather tires are a clear upgrade over all-season, winter tires are the only tires designed to deal with severe snow and ice.
Drivers who see regu lar winter conditions should remove their all-season tires when temperatures fall below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7
degreesWhy?Celsius).Because winter tires have much softer compounds that retain grip in frigid temps, as well as tread patterns that are geared toward maintaining traction on slick surfaces. As the inventor of the winter tire, Nokian Tyres tests its products north of the Arctic Circle to ensure they’re helping drivers thrive in harsh winter conditions.Wintertires are only meant for winter, though - those soft compounds deteriorate in sustained heat.
It may be surprising that there are three types of tires, but it’s valuable knowledge for staying safe on the road. To learn more about all-sea son, all-weather and winter tires, drivers can visit ShopTalk.NokianTires.com/

Have a dated, drafty fireplace? Inserts are affordable and boost efficiency
(BPT) — As weath er cools and daylight hours shorten, many people naturally spend more time indoors and there’s no place more inviting than the fire place. The problem is that while a traditional, open wood fireplace offers the ambiance and nostalgia homeowners cherish, they are often dirty, drafty and boast outdated styles.
One simple, afford able way to upgrade and elevate your space is with a fireplace insert. Any wood fireplace is an option for a fireplace
insert, a applianceself-containeddesigned to fit into an existing space. The most pop ular options are either fueled by gas or electric ity, depending on the homeowner’s prefer ence. Many people are looking to eliminate ash and soot, therefore gas and electric inserts are the most popular. Plus, because fireplace inserts are far more efficient than many older wood fireplaces, they can help you save money while warming a space when temperatures dip.
The Environmen tal Protection Agency explains the inefficien cy of wood fireplaces: “Fireplace drafts pull the warm air up the chimney, causing other rooms to be cooler. If you use central heat while burning in a fire place, your heater will work harder to maintain constant instance, throughouttemperaturesthehouse.”Thisiswhy, forinstallingagas
fireplace insert within an existing fireplace opening significantly improves the heating power and efficiency.
The gas fireplace insert is designed to contain and radiate heat back into the room, rather than sending the ma jority of that heat up a chimney flue.
“Any fireplace insert will improve the efficiency since there is no longer an open chimney to the out side of the home. With a gas fireplace insert
for example, you can boost heating efficiency from 15% with wood to around 70%. This means more fuel is converted into useable heat and you stay warmer,” said Randy Wendolek, hearth expert with Heat & Glo.He also points out that if a homeowner’s continued on

current chimney does not meet requirements for burning wood, it’s simple to install an insert with venting liners, and therefore they would no longer need to fix the chimney, which can be costly.
In addition to im
proved heating efficien cy and reduced cost, a gas insert enhances ambiance by updating the space while reduc ing clutter and increas ing wellness, as there’s no heavy wood to haul or stack. How does it work?
In its simplest form, a gas fireplace insert fits inside your wood-burn ing fireplace opening, and is fueled via a gas line, bringing instant warmth into your home at the touch of a button. For homeowners with out natural gas service,
a liquid propane (LP) tank can be installed and used to fuel the fire place. Vented fireplace inserts utilize a flexible, aluminum flue liner through the existing chimney, and many gas inserts have a blower that helps direct the
hot air into the room through the insert’s front
Whilevents.gas inserts are a popular choice, elec tric inserts are another option for renovating traditional wood fire places that are typically the easiest to incor porate. With electric fireplace inserts, instead of a live flame that you normally get with a gas insert, the flame effect is created by LED light ing to provide the fire appearance.Unlikegas inserts,
electric options do not require a gas line and ventilation. Plus, electric fireplace inserts are shallower, so if depth is constraining your ability to install a gas fireplace insert, they are a greatBothalternative.gasandelectric fireplace inserts are also available in a range of sizes with modern designs that will refresh any room.
