WELLSVILLE — Relief has come to the working parents of infants and toddlers living in Wellsville and the surrounding area. Brianna Simms knows firsthand what a problem it is to find good day care for a baby when your hus band leaves for work at 6 a.m. and you leave at 7 a.m. and don’t get home until after 6 p.m. Like other young parents during the COVID-19 pandemic, with day care after day care closing their doors, they struggled to find day care for their 6-month-old.Nowtheir search is over.On Aug. 30, the YMCA — incidentally where Simms is the executive director — opened an Early Learn ing Center for children from 6 weeks old to preschool age, just two doors down from the Y. At a ribbon-cut ting ceremony in the entrance, CEO of the YMCA for the Twin Tiers Jeff Townsend said Simms was instrumen tal in getting approval for the new facility and getting it up and running.“Thetruth is success starts with strong lead ership, vision, passion, and follow through,” Townsend said. “All words I would use to describe Brianna Simms who has championed and spearheaded this project from inception to completion. Brian na has truly done an outstanding job leading this project and I am very proud of her. I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to work with you and your project team.” Simms was quick to point out that there were others who made the project possible from the permission of landlord Brad Whit ford of L.C. Whitford Company in allowing the renovations to take place to funding and support from Sherry Walton and Charlie Joyce.Sims explained, “In 2017 I started my career here at the YMCA of the Twin Tiers as the childcare director of the Wellsville branch. Not long after that I began to dream about bring ing an Early Learning Center to Wellsville just like we have in Olean

WELLSVILLE — Everyone knows you can never find a park ing place in the village and when the Allegany County Ancient Order of Hibernians 7th an nual car show comes to town Sept. 10 you won’t find a parking place in Island Park, either. Get those custom, antique and classic cars polished up for the AOH’s Park ‘N the Park Car Show, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. “This is a great family fun event here in Allegany County,” the organizer of the event, AOH member Brian Cannon, said. More than 230 cars and trucks were reg istered last year and parked under the trees from tip to center of the park, leaving scant room for the ICS Fun Fair, which takes place in tandem with the show. Car enthusiasts were able to walk under the trees, converse with owners and generally enjoy seeing many types of vehicles, from an an tique Model A to today’s sports cars. A couple of contests keep the registered car owners and viewers entertained. For the registered vehicles there is a Loudest Exhaust contest. The vehicle that reaches the highest decibel level wins. Everyone gets to participate in the engine Blow-Up Contest by guessing how long it takes for an engine run ning without oil to blow up. The winner with the closest, registered, guess takes home 50% of the pot.At the end of the day 30 trophies will be awarded.Thecar show takes place along with the annual Immaculate Conception Church Fun Fair, so there will be plenty for everyone to do. There will be music, 50/50 raffles, onsite vendors, a chicken bar beque, food trucks and more. The Fun Fair will offer games for children, a baked goods booth, used books and items and an Cannonauction.said the car show is one of the AOH’s top fundraisers; all proceeds from the show help support local charities. The AOH also hosts the annual Irish Road Bowling event in June for charity. In 2021 I accepted the position of executive director of the Wellsville YMCA and that fall Barbara Sweitzer, the CEO at the time, sat down with me and said how can we accomplish that goal. “In the spring of this year, we started advocating out in the community about the importance of and the value an Early Learning Center would add to Wellsville. They un derstood that an early education is one of the most important assets we have that we can offer our children. With their generous support we were able to finally start breaking ground.” Townsend said, “The YMCA is truly blessed to have so many ded icated volunteers staff community leaders and vendors that are willing to support and champi on us on this project and all that we do for the community.”Hecontinued that the Early Learning Cen ter will be a “pillar of the Wellsville commu nity” as it not only will it provide much needed child care for up to 50 children, from infants to preschoolers.
