BOLIVAR — With the convention for the Southwestern Asso ciation of Volunteer Firemen well underway, organizers spent Friday morning honoring their own and carrying on Firemanbusiness.TheprestigiousoftheYear 2022 went to Lancaster Fire Department Fire Chief Eric Feldman. Taking the podium, the 28-year veteran firefighter said, “I’m not big on getting awards for something I’ve been trained to do.” However, Feldman was honored for pulling a man from a base ment fire regardless of the danger he faced. Feldman commented. “I probably wouldn’t have gone in there if I hadn’t known that I had back up right behind me and that they were already putting water on the blaze.”For Feldman it was a day off. He’d taken the day off work because he had scheduled an appointment to give a bone marrow donation. But the recipient had canceled the transfu sion, so at 6 a.m. Feld man was up and having breakfast.“Whynot get up early on a day off?” he quipped, humoring the audience.Heresponded to the alarm when it was toned out and headed for the nearby address thinking that since it was a kitch en fire that somebody was probably cooking breakfast. He was one of the first responders on the scene and was met by a mother who cried that her son was trapped in the basement apartment where the fire hadFeldmanstarted. said he doesn’t remember putting on all his equipment to enter the building and that the next thing he knew he was“Iinside.sawan arm pok ing out from behind the door,” he said. “The po lice had pinned the man behind the door when they forced the door open, and he couldn’t get out. I grabbed him and pulled him out. It all happened in a matter of five minutes. It was a once in a lifetime sit uation. I was just at the right place at the right time.”Feldman went on to advise younger firefighters to listen to older firefighters and he said that older firemen should also listen to what younger firemen have to Prioroffer.tothe Firemen of the Year Award, members of the Westons Mills Fire Department were among those hon ored for their years of service. Oil changes, tire rotations and even car washes may garner the bulk of drivers’ atten tion in regard to vehicle maintenance. But var ious smaller undertak ings, including keeping vehicle interiors clean, are worthy of drivers’ attention as well. Dust and dirt can accumulate in a vehicle over time, making for a less comfortable ride. Keeping vehicle interi ors clean can make car and truck cabins more welcoming for drivers and their passengers, and such maintenance is simple and inexpensive. Focus on the floors. The floors in a car face all that weather has to offer. In winter, boots may track snow and deicing solutions like salt into a vehicle’s cabin. In summer, sand from the beach or dirt from hiking trails may find its way in. Some drivers use the same floor mats year-round, but there’s an advantage to switching based on the automotiveAccordingseasons.totheexperts at Napa, fabric floor mats in summer will hold on to dirt and keep it from winter,theirtrackingappreciateBeachgoersspreading.willthataftersandintocars.Intheswapfabric floor mats with rubber or fromsalt, meltingthesealternatives, plasticasmatswillholdsnow, rainorpreventingthemstainingthe floors.

HOUGHTON — In a move taken after the New York State Board of Regents earlier this year changed its definition of “university,” Houghton College changed its des ignation to Houghton University this summer. • Remove branchesrocks, andjunkGrab your chainsaw, throw in a shovel, and pull up the pickup truck and trailer. It’s time to remove rocks, branches and any junk you find in your field. There also may be things you want to keepmaybe tree saplings, a patch of wild growing raspberries or a brush pile along the edge of some woods that would make for a nice habitat. If there may be replanting, bring some large 5-gallon buckets to save plants.

(BPT) — There it is - a big, messy, over grown field of weeds, grass, tree stumps, rocks and who knows what else, just begging for some loving. It’s an eyesore that you (and your neighbors) have been wanting to tackle for a long time, but you weren’t sure exactly how to go about it. Before you run down to the hardware store to buy a weed whip or call the local fire department to do a prescribed burn, the yardcare experts at Toro offer 10 tips on how to turn an overgrown field into a beautiful stretch of yard for years of enjoyment.• Start with a game plan - Is the goal to extend the green turf area of your existing lawn into this field area? • Mow efficiently - To efficiently mow an overgrown field, consider mowing it at least twice, initially. In your first pass, raise the blades on your Toro Titan zero-turn mower to their highest level. This will allow you to avoid hitting any objects such as small boulders or large mounds of dirt that you may have missed in your walk through as your zero-turn mower slices through the weeds. about turning this spot into an area where your horses, llamas, goats or other livestock could graze. Knowing what you want to do with your new green space will help you determine how much effort you want to put into it.
Tips on how to turn an overgrown field into a beautiful yard
• You’ve got options - By clearing your field of the long weeds, scrub brush and tree saplings, you’ve created more options for your yard. Do you want to remove all weeds, or do you want to overseed with grasses and native, low-growth ground covers such as clover? Maybe you’d like to turn a portion of this new green space into a large garden - for which you may want to till that area.

• Half swath - For truly imposing fields, you may want to mow a half swath at a time. Simply make a pass of untouched long weeds using only half the width of the mowing deck with the other half passing previously cut grass. This will ensure your mower blade has the power and momentum to cut through the tough stuff and ensure the grass gets cut down to the proper size.
• Walk the fieldBefore you run a lawn mower through a field of tall weeds, make sure you walk it to identify any potential hazards that may not be readily visible. Look for rocks, stumps and logs, equipment parts and junk, potholes, nests and more. Bring some utility flags to mark any spots that you’ll need to avoid while you’re mowing the field.
• Get ready for a bumpy ride - If your overgrown field hasn’t been touched for years, get ready for a bumpy ride due to potholes, dirt gopherclumps, holes, roots, decaying branches, ant hills ... you name it, that is, unless you have a Toro zeroturn mower with MyRIDE suspension system, an exclusive technology that cushions the ride for the variationsregardlessmowerofinterrain.
• Leveling the field After you’ve cleared your field of the long weeds, you’ll want to consider leveling your new green space. This may mean bringing in soil to fill in holes and renting a mini-track loader from your nearest landscape or rental equipment dealer to knock down large bumps of dirt and remove larger boulders.
• Regular mowingOnce you’ve done the hard part, you can go as fast or as slow as you want in terms of reclaiming that green space and turning it into your new field of dreams. If you plan to transform the field over time, consider aerating the soil in the fall and begin the process of overseeding (versus sodding). The key is regular mowing to prevent weeds from growing back and reclaiming your new Forgreenspace.moretips about how to maintain your yard, visit Yardcare. com. 585-466-7962814-274-8899SERVICE

• Consider the previous use of the field - Was your overgrown field previously used as pasture for cows or horses? If so, large animals can cause quite a bit of soil compaction. Do you have gopher holes everywhere? That means your land will be quite lumpy after you mow it Understandingdown. how your field was used before will help determine soil conditions and what you’ll be working with after you clear the weeds away.

An independent poll shows the Republican primary in the new 23rd Congressional District between Carl Paladino and Nick Langworthy to be a dead heat. The poll by Barry Zeplowitz and Associ ates of Buffalo, released at the beginning of August, showed if the election were held today each candidate would receive 32% of the vote of likely voters in the Aug. 23 primary. As with other areas of the body, skin is susceptible to cancer.TheNational Cancer Institute says there are many different types of skin cancer and that it can appear different ly depending on the type and the person. Any changes in skin should be brought to the attention of a doctor immediately. The sooner treatment begins, the better the prognosis typicallyIndividualsis. also should be aware of what constitutes having a heightened risk for skin cancer. In most cases, that can include the type of skin one has. The Skin Cancer Foundation indicates that skin type is a major factor in risk for skin cancer, includ ing the deadly melano ma. While people with any shade of skin can get skin cancer, those who have fair skin tones are even more at risk for sunburn, sun damage and skin cancer. In 1975, Harvard Medical School physi cian Thomas Fitzpat rick created a scientific classification system for skin type, identifying six types of skin. The Fitz patrick Skin Type chart goes from very light to very dark. Skin types I and II face the highest risk of developing skin cancer, while types V and VI are at the lowest risk. That’s because fair skin doesn’t have as much pigmentation and natural melanin protec tion from the sun. In addition to pig mentation, skin type also is calculated by how skin reacts to sun exposure. This means whether one easily burns or easily tans. Fair skin tends to burn easily and tan lightly or not at all.Even though fairskinned individuals are at greater for skin cancer, anyone can get the disease. Ev eryone should use a broad-spectrum daily sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to protect against harmful rays.
